== File Download? ==

Whenever I click the edit tab at the top of any page, it comes up with a window asking me if I want to save a file. The file is "index.php". I always click "Cancel" to be on the safe side but that means I can't edit. Strangely, it haven't got this problem before and it doesn't appear if I try to edit anonymously. Also, I can edit without getting this window if I edit a section, revert a page or start a new comment (like what I am doing now). It's only if I click on the edit tab at the top. Does this happen to anyone else and is the file OK to save? Please help because I can't edit efficently!  {{User:The Chort/sig}} 15:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I think because of yesterday's April Fool's prank, my preferences got messed up somehow. You see, I had the "Use external editor by default" option checked which really meant "Download files onto my computer so they can be edited in a text editing program". *Probably, considering that WTT is a less powerful engine, but it is pretty unlikely that there would be a need to switch softwares. The pages may have been less because there was less formatting, but images seem to me to be the most demanding. {{User:Dylnuge/sig}} 17:09, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Not only was it a prank, but it was a special treat for people who didn't get to use it/a source of nostalga for older users. By the way, for those who are wondering, there's already been a ''lot'' of conversation today that's been [[HRWiki:Main Page Talk Archive 11|archived]]. I don't want to rehash any of that, but I do want to seize the opportunity to get preachy as usual. This whole thing had ''me'' "seriously concerned," for a number of reasons.
#A number of people knew, or were fairly sure, that it was a joke, but were very angry anyway and talked about crying for hours, leaving forever, or doing unspecified things with machine guns. I'm concerned about these people senses of humor. In particular it was called "cruel" more than once. People spoke as though we'd called a transportation strike in NYC, instead of simply changed the appearance (not even the functionality!) of a reference website about an Internet cartoon. If losing the soft blues and reds of the HRWiki really caused you substantial pain and suffering, then maybe the wiki is a ''little'' too important in your life!
#A number of other people decided it was for real, and reacted even more violently. Now, in their defense, it's kind of understandable that a change that huge, enacted with ''no'' warning or discussion, would raise some ruckus (see the next point: ''that's why it wouldn't happen!''). But I'm concerned about this demographic, too, and their ability to handle change. What if this ''had'' been real? I was really saddened to see that so many people were ready to simply throw in the towel and walk away, or used their departure as threats. While it's safe to say that this particular change will never happen around here, Change, in general, happens. Relationships break up. Parents remarry. You get a new boss. You get in a car wreck. If you can't handle your wiki changing color, how are you going to roll with ''those'' punches?
#Finally, for both groups, a word of stern comfort. At one point, JoeyDay <span class="plainlinks">[http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Talk:Main_Page&diff=next&oldid=298224 said]</span> that the sysops had been discussing the change for a long time in [[HRWiki:Da Basement|Da Basement]], and that it had been archived by now. A lot of people did a lot of tricks with code and other techie methods of trying to prove or disprove that it was a hoax, but ''all it really took was following up on his claim.'' There was no discussion there, archived or otherwise. And that brings me to the heart of today's sermon. '''This kind of change wouldn't happen without a lot of discussion and wiki consensus.''' Remember? That's how things are done around here. We vote on stuff. We talk about it incessantly for weeks. The wiki is not "run" by sysops or admins in the sense that they randomly decide, in secret, to do something and then put it in place overnight. (Um... hehe... with the exception of this once.) ''This'' concerns me, that people would seriously think a change like that that affected everyone would be enacted without discussion, warning, input, or participation. I would hope people trust the sysops ''not'' to pull something like that, or, if they did, would stand up to them and supportively, constructively, but courageously tell them it's not right.

Also, if you're going to address the wiki, it helps when what you're posting is, well, correct, and what was originally posted here was ''incorrect''. :I knew it was a prank after I viewed the source code that showed "tavistyle.css," saw that [[Special:Version]] still said they were using MediaWiki, saw that all of the article names still had spaces/underscores in them (something distinctly ''not'' a feature of WikkiTikkiTavi without extensive custom modification--which they couldn't have done in a day), noticed that the "switch" was made arbitrarily in one day with no forewarning, and after all the other obvious giveaways (like when they started making up crap like "X32 caching," which I don't believe is actually real). -- {{User:Soapergem/sig}} 07:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

:::::If I didn't already know about it beforehand, my first clues would probably be from the fact that all the pages (other than the main page) were all identical, and given how much pain it was (or at least seemed to be from looking at the history) to convert from 'tavi to MediaWiki in the first place. Then there's the fact that all the special pages, apart from existing at all for some of them, looked identical to before (watchlist, history, edit, etc, etc)... at that point I'd probably check things like the source code, [[Special:Specialpages]] and [[MediaWiki:Monobook.css]] to check it was really just MediaWiki. :The fanstuff wiki link is on the fake main page. It wasn't a separate wiki back then and so isn't up in the links at the top. Since we were trying to make our prank as close to the original as possible (while still maintaining basic functionality), we didn't include it. I have enabled the skin choice in the preferences mostly for the sake of recording our history. If someone actually plans to use the skin on an everyday basis and needs the link, I'll consider going to the trouble to add it, but for now I'm not going to worry about it. ==Something Weird on my Talkpages==

This might be related to the subject above (I see that my old talkpage was mentioned). I got a notification e-mail for my old talkpage ([[User talk:Yeltensic]]), saying that it had been edited by Dot com, but when I went there it was unchanged (I checked the history). Then, when I logged in as Granola, I got the "new messages" box, but that talkpage was also unchanged. {{User:Granola/sig}} 03:23, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

==Sbemails gone==
When I accessed the Sbemail page on the official site, the list was completley gone. The page was there, but there were no emails, and pressing the random button took you to 404'd. :Well, that's a good question. Let's say ''soon''&mdash;hopefully this week, but probably in the following week or two. There were 65 hacks to this version that each have to be checked and, if necessary, incorporated into the new version. I am nearly done with the non-captcha part of that. I also have to make sure all the extensions, hooks, and custom special pages work as expected, but I don't anticipate that being much of an issue. The sticking point is the reintegration of our captcha system, which will have to be completely overhauled. You can bet that we'll upgrade within a couple of days of when that's done. [http://www.google.com/analytics Urchin] is a web tracking suite that I've used in the past on my own website (it's now owned by Google and has been renamed to Google Analytics; notice how it says "formerly Urchin" in the footer of the page I linked to). It tracks hits, sessions, downloads, bandwidth, etc. and can give you cool statistics like which keywords people are using to search for your website and which browsers visitors are using. The file you've found seems to be one component of the Urchin application. You can also tell it has to do with maintenance because the filename starts with an underscore. Good find, though.
