::::::::::No, what I mean is a way for people to realise when a pageinprogress is invalidated. It can be very frustrating to have to check page history, count 15 minutes, take down the pip, then cause an edit conflict because the guy wasn't regularly saving, and he's mad because 30 minutes haven't passed. Perhaps saying "save after 20 minutes" instead of "try to save every 15-30 minutes" would help? 02:48, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
:::::::::::The instruction to save every 15 to 30 minutes is a friendly reminder, not a strict timer. At 30 minutes plus 1 second, we're not gonna yank the template off the page and declare the transcript open for anyone else to claim. On the other hand, after an hour with no update, we just might. Or we might not. It depends on the page, the time of day, and other factors. The template is intended to prevent edit conflicts, and that's all. Other editors are requested not to edit a particular section as a courtesy. The person doing the major editing should likewise extend other editors the courtesy of letting them know work is still being done. &mdash; It's dot com 16:37, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
No Paint Daubs not mentioned in rules
Okay, this is getting really annoying. When I say that "it was never listed in the contest rules", I refer to the actual, very real contest- not the Homestar's contest, I mean TBC's contest, the one that showed up on the main page, the one Homestar is supposed to be judging. I am not explaining the joke; I am trying to note that the "no paint" rule was never specified in the contest details, and Homestar acts as if it were. PLEASE STOP UNDOING MY STUFF WITHOUT READING IT. I WORDED IT POORLY, I AM TRYING TO FIX IT. Okay, we clear on that? Good. Now, are there any non-"It's explaining the joke" objections? 23:17, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
:It's still explaining the joke. Even if you phrased a remark something like "The official rules did not mention no paint daubs" it wouldn't be notable, since it is implicit in a pumpkin carving contest that it is not, in fact, a pumpkin painting contest. 23:21, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
::The equivalent would be "Strong Bad said that The Ugly One costume didn't count, but the rules didn't explicitly say that you couldn't draw a picture on a giant box and put the box over your head." I say it's non-notable. -- 23:40, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
:::I think it *is* notable. Why? Because, not having read the official rules as I had no intention of entering, I came to the wiki page after watching this toon with the *explicit* intention of finding out whether that was actually mentioned in the rules, or whether Homestar was just being Homestar. I think it's definitely worthwhile to mention it; "No paint on your pumpkins" is something that *would* actually appear in a pumpkin carving contest's rules; conversely, "no costumes composed of a sheet of paper with a drawing of a stick figure on it" is *not* something you would expect to see in a costume contest's rules, and I doubt anyone is going to actually look to see whether it was there or not. The wiki exists as a source of information for fans, does it not? If any information is useful, should it not be included, when, as in this case, it is of interest and not inherently obvious? == Misspelled Japanese? ==

Regarding the Okasan remark: I dunno, I'm kinda hesitant to say a transliteration of a japanese word is misspelled. It depends on the system of romanization you use. The fact we have is kind of akin to saying "Tokyo is misspelled. It is more properly spelled Tookyoo or Toukyou" -132.183.151.171 17:02, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking the same thing. Besidies, I don't think the a with the macron is in the font. Also, it wouldn't fit over moms very well if there were two a's. --Alexie 17:55, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

In either romanization, it should be spelled "okāsan" or "okaasan" not "okasan". The difference between "Tokyo" and "okāsan" is that "Tokyo" is technically an English word, just like "Japan" is an English word and not a romanization of a Japanese word. It might also be worth mentioning that he mispronounced the word. He prounouced it like it was spelled (with one 'a') instead of how "okāsan" is supposed to be pronounced; which is why that macron or second 'a' is so important. "Okasan" literally means "hill-three" or "Mr. Hill". Incidentally, "Tokyo" in Japanese would be either "Tōkyō" or "Toukyou", but not "TooKyoo". The Growlbacks have 0 points, and the visitors have 24, presumably six seconds into the second quarter (we know it's the first half, and if it's only six seconds into the game then the home team is really in trouble (I suppose it would be possible if the Growlbacks received the kickoff three times, all three times they muffed the ball in or very near their own end zone and the visitors recovered it and scored touchdowns, and all three times they went for a two-point conversion)). Suffice it to say they're getting creamed, and at this rate they'll lose 96 to 0 or worse. The mascot would just like them to do well enough to defy the oddsmakers. A Google search for "beat the spread" turns up far more results for gambling than an offensive formation, of which WikiAnswers gives an excellent explanation. &mdash; It's dot com 04:05, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

So the ending where the gregs are drawing the comic of the girls drawing the comic of the gregs really reminds me of the famous Drawing Hands lithograph by Escher. == Open source is free software ==

@DeFender1031:
You said "that's not true though, there's more to open source than being free" when editing http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/4_Gregs

Free as in freedom. The Free Software Foundation, the GNU Project and I prefer it be called free software, so that _freedom_ is at the forefront of people's minds when they use "open source" software. Open source is a name popularized by people who didn't want to talk about the political and ethical decisions made when using free software("Open source") So, the Free Software Foundation being the ones responsible for the Free Software Movement, which is what started all free software, and lead to "open source" software. Also, GNU prefers "Linux" be called GNU/Linux. Free software such as Firefox, GIMP, Audacity, and GNU/Linux itself wouldn't exist without freedom being at the forefront of these respective company's minds. So, if FSF and GNU prefer the name "free software" over "open source" it should be called so.

So I was right to add "Though more appropriately called free software." in the Explanations section.

:There are two problems with this: a) most readers here will read that as "free as in beer" rather than "free as in freedom" and (more importantly) b) open source does not mean free. You can have proprietary software that you pay for that is also open source. Considering that it's not that relevant for the homestar runner universe, we should only give a minimal definition of the term and not go into the discussion whether open source means free or not. 09:39, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Did anyone notice how when the four Gregs are being announced the instrumentals change to match each one? Like SciFi Greg had some futuristic-sounding music, D n' D Greg had what sounded like minstrel music, Open Source Greg had some digital sounds, and Japanese Culture Greg had a Japanese instrument (I don't know what it's called). ::Well, it is the same rhythm, except the 4gregs one has two grace notes at the beginning and doesn't repeat the last note of the riff before starting it over. Other than that, it's just a series of four eighth notes in both songs.

Open source is free software
@DeFender1031:

I wouldn't think it a reference unless it contained more than a bar's worth of note, and actually made use of the song' signature riff.
::Well, it is the same rhythm, except the 4gregs one has two grace notes at the beginning and doesn't repeat the last note of the riff before starting it over. Other than that, it's just a series of four eighth notes in both songs. But, I put it on the talk page instead of the actual page because I agree, it's not at all noteworthy, and certainly not intentional, just, IMO, an interesting coincidence.

To beat the spread, is to have a defense in which the spread is negated. The explanations say it is a gambling thing, which could be correct, but, it does not apply to this.
:I think the gambling definition fits the context better. -128.103.10.17 00:45, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
::How? They're at a FOOTBALL game. I think the football definition fits a whole lot better. 00:47, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
:::People spread bet on football all the time. Saying "at least" beat the spread seems to imply that the mascot doesn't believe the team can win, but they should at least try to beat the spread number set by bookies. -128.103.10.17 00:48, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
::::Or it could mean "at least make one decent play" 00:55, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
:::::Of course. I said that I think it fits the gambling context better, meaning it fits both to a degree. It's pretty ambiguous. -128.103.10.17 00:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
::::::And i'm saying that i'm not sure that's the case. 01:00, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
:::::::It's not ambiguous at all.
"Beat the spread" is clearly a gambling reference. Yes, "spread" is a football term, but "beat the spread" means what It's Dot Com explained.--Big Dog 04:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
:The first thing I thought when he said it was gambling. I've never heard anyone ever say "beat the spread" when they're on defense. I understand the concept of the phrase, but it makes no sense. It's the spread that beats the defense, not the other way around. If the defense beats the spread, then it's just a good play.
So the ending where the gregs are drawing the comic of the girls drawing the comic of the gregs really reminds me of the famous Drawing Hands lithograph by Escher. I feel like at the very least that sequence has to be referencing SOMETHING and this was the first thing that came to mind. == Open source is free software ==

@DeFender1031:

TBC Material or Fansite?
Was Tompkins' Hot Lady Escort Service created by TBC or by eager fans? But I don't actually know who registered the website. Can anyone help? 16:41, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Custom music styles
Did anyone notice how when the four Gregs are being announced the instrumentals change to match each one? Like SciFi Greg had some futuristic-sounding music, D n' D Greg had what sounded like minstrel music, Open Source Greg had some digital sounds, and Japanese Culture Greg had a Japanese instrument (I don't know what it's called). Just thought it was kinda neat. I didn't want to put it because I didn't know if it would be considered important or not.
:I think "are belong to us" is conspicuous by its absense. Hey Strong Bad,<br>
I'm at college and I need to keep my bike from being<br>
stolen. I figure if I think like a thief, I can figure out<br>
how to protect it. So, how would you try to steal my bike?<br>
STRONG BAD: {typing} {disappointed tone} Oh, not smart enough for MIT, huh? Just MI? {clears screen} {regular voice}Well first off, how do you know your crappy bike is even worth stealing? How many pegs you got? Mag wheels? White tires? Worthless baseball card in the spokes? If not, then you got nothing to worry about. What self-respecting bicycle thief would steal a (shudder) ten-speed? Or a (shudder, shudder) mounTAIN bike? The only thing those bikes gets<!--sic--> you is tired. Any bike with a water bottle holder is a complete waste of bike. {clears screen} But, let's pretend you do have a cool bike. :STRONG BAD: Are you supposed to be a trash can or a robot?
:HOMESTAR RUNNER: Ummm... {pulls out petition reading "The Bromide Solution"} you wanna sign this petition, my bromide?

Fun Facts
Explanations
*"Mag wheels", (not to be confused with Magnesium alloy wheels) are wheels on a bike that are made with larger and thicker spokes than on a typical bike. Typical mags had 5 to 6 large "spokes". The bike pictured in this episode is a bike with wheel covers. These plastic covers actually fit on the outside of a traditional spoked wheel, much like a hubcap on a car.
*"Pegs" are metal tubes affixed to a bicycle's front or rear axle, allowing the rider to balance their weight on an area other than the pedals and freeing the body of the bike for a wider range of tricks.
*A bromide is an ion of a bromine atom with a charge of -1. Such bromides as potassium bromide were once used as sedatives, leading to the once prevalent use of the word "bromide" to indicate someone or something is platitudinous and boring.
**Bromide is water soluble, so a bromide solution would be bromide in water.
*Attaching a baseball card to the spokes would simulate the sound of a motorcycle as the wheel rotates.
*"Earf" is a dialectic spelling of "Earth."

Trivia
*Strong Bad's petition reads:
<blockquote>-PETITION-<br>
i do hearby sign that<br>
i am in full support<br>
of fully supporting<br>
all the good causes<br>
and casual effects of<br>
said causes and, as it<br>
were, caucuses. now,<br>
previously, and also<br>
futurely held...<br>
X________________</blockquote>
*Marzipan's petition reads:
<blockquote>Counter-Petition<br>
I, the willing signer of this<br>
document, betta recognize<br>
that Earf in trouble. Earf<br>
injured. Injured bad.<br>
<br>
X______________</blockquote>

*Homestar's bike is a Huffy SIGMA circa 1987<!-- This is not a reference, please do not link it -->.
*The summary for the Podstar Runner RSS feed reads, "Strong Bad teaches a college kid how to avoid getting their bike stolen."

Remarks
*In hygiene, two emails prior, Strong Bad complained about a lack of college girls sending him email. The sender of this email, Virginia, appears to be a female college student.
*"Thiefnique" is a portmanteau of "thief" and "technique."
*"Couchscraper" is a portmanteau of "couch" and "skyscraper."
*"Brrlap" on Strong Mad's textile-mill disguise refers to burlap, a durable but coarse cloth made of vegetable fiber.
*Strong Bad can spray the can of fog, although his hands are stuck to the couch later.
*Homestar's trash disguise has his own eyes, whereas Strong Bad, Strong Mad and The Cheat wore disguises with a unified, cartoony eye pattern, quite distinct from their own.
*Homestar boasted in cliffhangers that he had the history and the motive to steal the Lappy.
*While Homestar is stealing the Lappy, clicking its screen will not create any ripples.
*Strong Bad's bush disguise bears a similarity to a berry-laden bush appearing in the Peasant's Quest video game.
*This is the first toon to show the exterior of a CGNU building (assuming that the tower in the background is in fact a building).
*Strong Bad claims that no self-respecting bicycle thief would steal a "mounTAIN bike." Then, dressed as the bush, he proceeds to steal Pom Pom's mountain bike.
*Assuming the couch is a standard one with fabric upholstery, Strong Bad couldn't have either climbed up or gotten stuck to the couch with suction cups.
*At the end of the Podstar Runner version of the email, the Easter egg of the Lappy slowly moving to the right starts automatically; however, it does not show Homestar Runner stealing it.

Goofs
*After Strong Bad receives the pizza and turns around, the logo on the pizza box gets reversed.
*When College Strong Bad throws the clipboard into the air, and then a second time he throws it off the screen, the entire text occasionally gets reversed.
*The printed The Paper is straight and does not follow the curvature of the New Paper.
*The word "safe" can be clicked even while the monitor continues to move in the Easter egg at the end, which restarts that segment from the beginning.
*When Homestar steals the Lappy, the power cord doesn't stretch or move. Instead it stays as it is.
*In the podstar version, the audio only plays on the left speaker until after the switch back to Strong Bad's lappy after Marzipan's line.
*In the easter egg, during the cut to the wide shot, the New Paper disappears.

Fixed Goofs
*Strong Bad misspelled "enough" as "enogh" in the beginning of his response. This was fixed a few hours after it was released.

Inside References
*The pizza Bubs gives Strong Bad is Bubs' Old Pizza from privileges.
*Pom Pom's costume is from technology.
*The cat-burglar scene shows another instance of duct tape.
*Strong Bad's cat-burgling outfit was seen before in Strong Bad is in Jail Cartoon (minus the suction cups).
*The music playing as Strong Bad first appears in his bush disguise made its debut as Sterrance's theme in animal.
*The bicycle seat Red, White, and Banana first appeared in the chair.
*When Strong Bad attempts to steal the bike seat off of the couch, he is foiled by two Lazer Tag guns. The Poopsmith previously carried one of these guns when he dressed up in Lazer Tag gear in The House That Gave Sucky Treats.
*Strong Bad's line, "I would rather die," when asked to do something with someone, was first heard in Biz Cas Fri 1.
*The can in The Cheat's hideous pile is the same as the can Homestar kicks in the Easter egg in "original".
* Strong Bad's intro song is to the same tune as Strong Sad's lyrical rampage.
MARZIPAN: Strong Bad, do you want to hear my song?<br>
STRONG BAD: Hi! No!<br>
MARZIPAN: Okay, here we go.
{Marzipan starts playing Carol}

STRONG BAD: I said no... Ooh, that sounds gorgeous.

MARZIPAN: {singing} I'm very sensitive to birds<br>
STRONG BAD: What?<br>
STRONG BAD: Them falling on you?<br>
MARZIPAN: {singing} I'm very sensitive to all these things<br>

MARZIPAN: {singing} Yeah, I really, really, really like bees<br>
STRONG BAD: I really, really think you're making this up as you go.

MARZIPAN: {singing} Have you ever walked outside?<br>
MARZIPAN: {singing} They like to fly around and eat your fruit<br>
STRONG BAD: Oh, fruit and cute. Good rhyme!<br>
MARZIPAN: {singing} But it's okay, 'cause they're cute<br>
STRONG BAD: Oh, cute and cute. That's even more advanced.<br>

MARZIPAN: {singing} I've heard some people say<br>
HOMESTAR: {singing simultaneously} Yeah, I really, really like to play with trees! And ants!

STRONG BAD: All right, don't tell anybody I sang along with you.<br>
HOMESTAR: But you can tell them I did!<br>
MARZIPAN: No thanks!
Fun Facts
*Strong Bad never was "The Bee". Technically it was The Goblin as seen in Pumpkin Carve-nival.
*Strong Bad and Homestar are in stereo, so when Strong Bad talks, his voice comes out of the left speaker, and when Homestar talks, his voice comes out the right speaker.
*Marzipan briefly shows her sensitivity to bees in Fall Float Parade.

Litigation Jackson is a film that helped to sponsor the Decemberween Pageant in the 'toon A Decemberween Pageant. The tagline is "This Decemberween... The System Really Works, Jerks!" It was released into theaters on December 27th.

According to the film's poster (starring Matt), it is a joint project between the famed Free Country, USA jack-of-all-trades writer/illustrator Lem Sportsinterviews and one of the Delabors of Thorax Corporation, most likely Gent Delabor as he is the head of the company and seems to do most of the work. It was brought to you by the makers of Trogdor and the Peasant's Quest movie.

A sequel was revealed in the email "rampage," entitled "Litigation Jackson 2: Legal Rampage." The poster features Litigation Jackson holding some "Important Legal Documents", implying higher stakes than the box of plain old "Legal Documents" in the original film (see poster) with an explosion occurring in front of the New York Supreme Court. He appears to have gotten a perm between the first and second movies.

The name "Litigation Jackson" first appeared in the game Hairstyle Runner, in which one of the hairstyles in the gallery is entitled "Litigation Jackson". The hairstyle features a unibrow and a goatee and sideburns that both resemble the letter J.

The parody refers to the title of the 1988 film Action Jackson.

To "litigate" means to contest or engage in legal proceedings.

The entire series could be a modified-spin off from "Litigation Johnson", a name under the testimonies for Thorax's "PROGRAM CONGRATULATION(TM)(R)(C)" PRODUKT.
