Fourth Wall Breaks

142.166.205.184: /* Emails that reference being watched */

In a blue moon, the H*R characters "break the fourth wall" by recognizing their existence as cartoon characters on a computer screen rather than in a fictional world of their own.

First Time Here? sets the stage for fourth wall breakages, especially when Strong Bad shows up to let you know why you're here.

It has also occurred in the following Strong Bad Emails:

Emails that reference being watched
*rock opera: Strong Bad implies that people have been watching his emails over the past three and a half years.
*huttah!: The Cheat actually watches the e-mail on his own computer.
*little animal: Strong Bad mentions "the viewers...at home..."
*the process: the entire email implies that Strong Bad is aware that he is a cartoon being watched by people at home.
*mile: Strong Bad tells us he won't be checking his e-mail this week.
*for kids: Strong Bad alludes to the idea of children watching his emails.
*other days: Strong Bad does his email earlier for "Eastern European viewers across the pond."
*extra plug: The scene at the end with the cast making a fake e-mail gives the impression that Strong Bad knows someone's watching, and that they want to see the e-mail finished.
*animal: Strong Bad says goodbye to everyone.
*part-time job:Bubs refers to Strong Bad's "email show," to which Strong Bad replies that one day he'll "be big."
*stand-up: Strong Sad tells us to follow him to the television, where he plays the performance of Little Strong Bad.
*the basics: Strong Bad says "there'll be another one next week".
*50 emails: Strong Bad turns to the screen and says "Don't nobody go nowheres. I'll be right back."
*couch patch: Strong Bad implies that losers are watching the email. He also says that the couch patch is visible in Homestar's flashback.
*some kinda robot and homsar: Strong Bad tells the viewers to keep sending him their questions.
*dangeresque 3: Strong Bad tells us some info, quote/unquote, "before we start throwing full wine bottles at our computer screens."

Emails that reference that the characters are on a website
*flashback: The size of the display area is purposefully extended and Homestar Runner is "behind the black."

*Not the 100th Email!!!: References to the 404 page and the user poking around the site.
*old comics: Strong Bad says he and Homestar were used in a comic that aired at least 60 years ago. Since they are obviously not that old, he is pointing out the fact that he and Homestar are unaging cartoon characters.
*virus: The Virus opens most of the characters' minds to realize that they are in a cartoon.
*animal: Strong Bad says that a man with a laptop computer comes "from the right side of the screen."
*part-time job: Strong Bad peeks around the edge of the black on his way to Bubs'.
*dreamail:Strong Bad says his dreamail would have a pink border.

In addition, the fourth wall has been breached in the following toons:

*Characters doing commentaries for the toons that are DVDs show that they know it was a cartoon. Homestar Runner being in the preview for In Search Of The Yello Dello DVD and acknoledges this shows the same.
*The System is Down: References to both the 404 File Not Found page and homestarrunner.com being down.
*Homestar Presents: Presents: Strong Bad informs the viewers that Homestar runs around frantically from Decemberween to New Years, then, in the easter egg, there is a poster on the wall that reads, "Left Out Characters' Support Group & Buffet."
*Strong Sad's Character Page: In his character page, Strong Sad mentions that he doesn't want to "do a character tape."
*In Search Of The Yello Dello DVD: The TV announcer says that the Yello Dello is "the most rare and exotic bird in this entire cartoon."
*Teen Girl Squad Issue 8: Cheerleader anounces "It's Over!" and implies someone is controlling her world.
*The King of Town DVD commentary: Strong Bad says that the King of Town is everyone's least favorite character.
*Where's The Cheat?: Strong Bad says "Don't worry, big guy. We'll cut to a montage."
Homestar Runner

142.166.205.184: /* Biography */

:This article is about the character. For information on the Homestar Runner Flash cartoon, see Homestar Runner (Flash cartoon).

Biography
Homestar is the star of the show, but he probably doesn't realize it. Ever the butt of jokes and the recipient of nicknames, Homestar is an earnest character with a clean heart and nothing but love for the rest of mankind. Unfortunately, his absolute cluelessness and clumsiness keep him from realizing his full potential. You can never be quite sure whether he and Marzipan are going out or not, but he sure seems to think they are. He weighs about 100 pounds, according to the toon Marshmallow's Last Stand. He rarely wears pants. However, if you point this out to him, he'll kind of go all squirrely on you.

Homestar is the star athlete on an unspecified sports team led by Coach Z. He is also colonel of the inactive Homestarmy. His best friend remains Pom Pom. He has some speech impediments; as he says, he has "twouble with his aw's." He also likes to borrow things from (and return things to) Strong Bad, particularly without the latter's knowledge.

Although he is often the target of pranks by Strong Bad, Homestar believes that he is friends with Strong Bad and tries to win his favor, often with bad results which Homestar completely misunderstands. As a whole, Homestar seems to be too dim to realize when people are being mean to him, or when he's being mean to other people. He often unintentionally insults his friends or steps on their feelings and is unable to understand their resulting feelings of anger.
Character Video Transcript
{Page Title: Homerun Hitter!}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, hello. Greetings, one and everyone. Welcome to me... Homestar... Runner... Homestar Runner. Um... what else? I pretty much run the show around here. I date the only girl, I have the only propeller cap (propeller cap twirls). And can run, and jump, and kick the fastest, highest and like nobody's business. If I had to pick one word to describe myself, it would probably be... Fluffy Puff Marshmallows. Or Homestar. Either one, really. They both fit.

STRONG BAD: {offscreen} Don't forget doofus/moron/um...Lionel Richie. {The last word Strong Bad says is selected at random}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Yeah, that too. That's another good one. In closing, I look good in red. Check it out. {turns around, sings} Butt dance, butt da-a-ance!

Homestar's eyes
*Homestar's eyes are quite strange. There are two theories to how they work.
**Sometimes they seem to move around his head. Most of the time they're like a flounder's eyes, and they switch sides on his face whenever he turns. In the Old Intro 2, you can sort of see Homestar's eyes moving as the camera circles around him. Also, in Theme Song Video and the currently absent toon Marshmallow's Last Stand, you can see his face from the front, which further implies to this theory.
**But sometimes, like when he's talking to Bubs at his concession stand, the camera will switch views instantly from outside the stand to inside. This gives the idea that Homestar actually has four eyes, two on each side.
*His puppet and his two figurines, on the other hand, have eyes stuck on one side of his head. Occasionally you can get a peek at the other side of Puppet Homestar's face, which looks pretty creepy without any eyes.
*The Brothers Chaps actually made the eyes velcro, so they can be switched if necessary.
