''It has been [[HRWiki talk:Main page redesign|suggested]] that the Main Page be redesigned. Feel free to use [[HRWiki:Main page redesign|its project page]] for proposed redesigns.''

== DVD commentary filmographies? ==

Although the DVD commentaries are generally just the two Brothers Chaps, many times they are joined by [[contributors|friends and family]] and/or Matt will portray one of the dumb animal characters. The toon articles all identify who is present for the DVD version with a "Commentary by:" subheader, but is there a separate article tracking commentators? Something like [[:Category:Filmography]], [[Strong Bad Email By Name of Sender]], or [[Fan Costumes#Costumes]]. If not this is something that I think would be a good addition to the wiki. --{{User:Bleu Ninja/sig}} 17:26, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
:Each DVD page (e.g. [[strongbad_email.exe Disc One]]) lists the commentators of each toon, but it might be interesting and helpful to have a centralized list of all of them. Ideally it should be formatted differently from the DVD articles (such as having separate sections for each character), or else it might be redundant. {{User:Gfdgsgxgzgdrc/sig‎}} 18:05, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
May as well plug that I made [[DVD Commentary Speakers]] for this purpose. --{{User:Bleu Ninja/sig}} 19:47, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

== Loading issues ==

I've been having some loading issues on both Chrome and Firefox with ad blockers off. [[User:Wolf O&#39;Donnel|Wolf O&#39;Donnel]] 08:35, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
:The wiki tends to load slower when it receives more traffic. My guess is that more people are coming here to check if the Halloween toon/teaser is out. {{User:Gfdgsgxgzgdrc/sig‎}} 03:45, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

== Back glitch ==

Recently, on this wiki (and ''only'' this wiki), when I use the back button in Firefox, it instead counts as a new page load, meaning I get caught in an infinite loop if I do it enough. Why is this? {{User:RickTommy/sig}} 22:23, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
:I've noticed this behavior too, though only in private windows, and there are some other wikis (and also some webcomics) that are affected. {{User:DEIDATVM/sig}} 22:34, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
::The back function works as normal for me now, so this may have been an error on the part of the program. There was an update to Firefox between then and now, which may have fixed the issue. {{User:DEIDATVM/sig}} 11:18, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
== Version of MediaWiki installed is obsolete ==

This wiki's software has not been updated in 11 years. The version of MediaWiki that is installed is now obsolete. The version installed is 1.15.4. The latest version of MediaWiki is 1.37.1. Please update MediaWiki. It has not been updated in a very long time.--[[Special:Contributions/100.1.76.9|100.1.76.9]] 14:27, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
:Will this change any ''fancy wiki text formatting'' or will we be fine with how it looks and how it will looks?
:Contrived and confused
:----[[User:Jeffjman|J∃ffJMan]][[File:jeffjsigchrismas.png|50px]] 12:34, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

I don't know about that, but version 1.15.4 of MediaWiki is already obsolete, so it's better to update it now. I don't know if it will affect its appearance, but update it since it hasn't been in a very long time.--[[Special:Contributions/100.1.76.9|100.1.76.9]] 01:40, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

:There's a bunch of [[Special:Version|custom stuff]] installed that may or may not work with the new version. I think the top-right links on the toons pages are generated by a special extension function, for example, so there's significant site functionality involved. Is there something in particular you need from a newer MediaWiki? [[User:Bobmath|Bobmath]] 08:46, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Also, the protocol in use for this website is not secure as it is a normal HTTP protocol & not HTTPS in which the "S" stands for secure. I do not know if that custom stuff will work in a newer version of MediaWiki, but try it out. If it does not work, then you might need to update that stuff so that it will work with newer versions.--[[Special:Contributions/100.1.76.9|100.1.76.9]] 21:04, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
:Yeah, the HTTPS-failure warning when I log in is... troubling. Not sure if this is related to MediaWiki or general hosting, though. --{{User:Bleu Ninja/sig}} 02:27, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

== Images ==

If Anyone Wants To Get An Image File, I don't know why, but the stupid Media Player won't let me get just a simple image shot. It keeps giving me some kinda linked video file, so my 'image' changes as I watch the video on the player, and goes blank when I turn it off. Any ideas? Or just upload your own, there's only like two different choices for anyone who has the NYU video... For future refferance though, does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm using the Alt + Print Screen meathod on Windows XP. It's really really annoying. ''<small><tt>[[User:Thunderbird L17|<font color=gold>⇔Thunderbird⇔</font>]]</tt></small>'' 16:38, 26 Mar 2005 (MST)

:The problem of taking screenshots of video has to do with hardware acceleration. To take screenshots, you'll need to turn hardware acceleration for video playback off. To do this, you'll need to go to your display properties (Start Menu --> Control Panel --> Display --> "Settings" tab --> "Advanced" button --> "Troubleshoot" tab --> "Hardware Acceleration:" slider control). You should move this slider to "none" and then click OK. This will allow you to use the print screen button to capture video screenshots like you would normal screenshots. It might make fast forwarding videos a little weird though, and you should restore your settings when you are though taking screenshots. If this wasn't helpful, you should be able to find more information through a [http://www.google.com/search?q=screenshots+hardware+acceleration Google search].[[User:Tom|<nowiki></nowiki>]] -- [[User:Tom|Tom]] 22:49, 27 Mar 2005 (MST)

==Katakana==

I'm a Japanese student, and I think that Trogdor's Japanese name is more along the lines of &#x30c8;&#x30e9;&#x30fc;&#x30b0;&#x30c9;&#x30a2; (Toraagudoa). --[[User:Aussie Evil|The Great Aussie Evil]] 22:20, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
:Really old, but just to make sure rebuttals are registered: This would be an unusual transliteration. A lot of words can transliterate into Japanese in more than one way, and you'll see inconsistencies when a word is new or obscure enough to Japanese culture not to be in dictionaries. Nevertheless, I think the first one listed on the page (&#x30c8;&#x30ed;&#x30b0;&#x30c9;&#x30a2; - torogudoa) is by far the most likely version.
:Aussie's version has two problems. First is the "ra" instead of "ro". Conventionally, transliteration from English to Japanese only distinguishes the different pronunciations of "o" with different lengths, not with different vowels. Thus "joke" would be "jooku" (where "oo" is a double-long o, not the "oo" in "boot"), while "jock" would be "jokku". Even though "jakku" in a Japanese accent would sound similar to "jock", any Japanese transliterator worth his salt would assume that to be "jack".
:The other problem is doubling "ra" to "raa". This convention has evolved a bit over the years, but in modern usage the Japanese often don't care quite that much which syllable was stressed in the English word. In a word like Trogdor, they wouldn't bother to lengthen the vowel just to indicate stress, but they would lengthen it to indicate a different sound. Specifically, "aa" in newer Japanese loan words is most often used in place of "ar" or "er" when they come at the end of an English syllable. (For example, they call a turn signal a "winker", and transliterate it as "winkaa".)
:Thus, Aussie's transliteration would probably be marginally recognizable to a Japanese reader familiar with Trogdor. But to the unfamiliar, it would probably be retransliterated back to English as "Trargdor".
== Tree Sap or Cartoons? ==

I'm pretty sure that "anime" shouldn't have an accent. With the accent, I think it refers to a [[wikipedia:Animé (oleo-resin)|tree sap]] used by varnish makers. {{unsigned|LordQuackingstick|13:12, 1 January 2007 (UTC)}}
:The distinction is essentially moot, because the most correct version of the word, insofar as its usage here, is in Japanese, which certainly has no written accents. The accent is for English speakers unfamiliar with the word who might otherwise mistake the "e" for a silent "e". :::::::::::::::I think it goes like this: Davey is singing the song but since this is an anmiated music video, the character seen singing and playing guitar (the dude from [[for kids]]) isn't necessarily the actual person singing (Davey). The Cheat just used the graphics from the imaginary kids' show (I wonder where he got imaginary graphics from) for the video. Think of the videos of The Gorillaz for example, where it's also cartoon characters standing in for the actual musicians. Should it be noted that Davie's gitar has no strings? {{User:Espemon333/sig}} 00:04, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
:No. This is a PBTC toon, which means it uses a simpler, more abstract and even more absurdist style than cartoons set in the actual Homestar universe. [[User:Nightsong81|Nightsong81]] 01:03, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
:: The only PbTC segments are the intro and the bridge. The singer through most of the song is not PbTC-style (most of the time.) --{{User:Jay/sig}} 01:12, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
:::Fair enough, but the haddi-man segments aren't exactly "realistic" even by sbemail standards, themselves. The man's guitar didn't have any strings in [[for kids]], either. Was it notable then? [[User:Nightsong81|Nightsong81]] 02:34, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
:: I kind of figured that, but I wanted to bring it up anyway. I've seen only the "Candy Mountain" one (I've heard there are others?), but it's been a while and I thought the rainbow bridge thing sounded familiar. If a rainbow bridge hasn't been featured in something with Charlie, it should be. - [[User:Point7Q|Point7Q]] 02:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

::: Rainbows and unicorns go together like sparkles and... unicorns. They just go together. And if you're looking for the conceptual origin of a rainbow bridge, you're going to have to go [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology a lot farther back] than Charlie the Unicorn. [[User:Nightsong81|Nightsong81]] 03:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

:::: Good point. Thinking about it further, I suspect the real reason it seemed familiar is because of the "sweet, sweet, rainbow bridge" in [[flashback]], which is probably too much of a stretch to cite as an internal reference. - [[User:Point7Q|Point7Q]] 10:53, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
::To me, the Chernabog seems more likely. The Chernabog comes from Slavonic legend, doesn't he? The metal sequence just oozes European metal. He also commands his subordinates with wild arm gestures and black magic. Strong Bad seems to grant French Fries in the same way. The Night on Bald Mountain sequence just seems more well known and fits with the semi-Germanic theme going on. The djinn is Arabic, a far cry from the European countries, and well, let's face it... the djinn doesn't do a lot. He just laughs. To me, Chernabog is the way to go. [[User:Discopwahty1975|Discopwahty1975]] 14:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
:::Also, Fantasia is known for it's opera and classical music, which goes well with the Brunnhilde reference. {{User:Elcool/sig}} 19:55, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
::::Yeah, but TBC are known to throw in references to old games in their work, and Strong Bad in the French Fries sequence does look a lot like the djinni... more so than Chernabog (who is shadow-black and has huge wings). Fantasia is definitely a better known reference, and Chernabog itself is awesomely metal, so I'm on the fence, here. I can see a solid case for either.[[User:Nightsong81|Nightsong81]] 05:32, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
== Sentence Quality ==

This sentence in Explanations has issues:<br>
:''This song comes from They Might Be Giants Podcast 37A, during which John Flansburgh also mentions hoping to make this into something on homestarrunner.com, which, eleven months later, it has.''<br>
Specifically, "it has" is ambiguous. What is "it," and what has it done? This isn't meant to be rude to the person who wrote it, but I'm not sure the best way to fix it. It would technically work with, "..., he has," but I'm not sure that's the best phrasing. It could also work with, "which happened eleven months later." Maybe just leave off everything after homestarrunner.com?[[Special:Contributions/146.122.71.68|146.122.71.68]] 12:21, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
:... The use of "it" is by far the least of this sentence's problems. Run-on sentence, mis-ordered clauses, terrible punctuation, no tense agreement, no verb agreement. It's barely got noun agreement. I'd attempt a rewrite, but late at night right now, so I'm not sure I could make anything much more coherent. --[[User:Belthazar|Belthazar]] 13:36, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
== Cellista ==

This has been suggested by multiple users (well, two anonnies; they could actually be the same person): No, Strong Bad is not saying the word "celesta". "Celesta" begins with an "S" sound and has the accent on the second syllable. "Cellist" begins with a "CH" sound and has the accent on the first syllable (as a former cellist, I'd know). Strong Bad's pronunciation matches "cellist" exactly. Furthermore, the song has a pretty clear cello in the second verse. I don't believe a celesta is heard anywhere in the song. Yeah, he hits a piano. Just pretend that he missed the cellist, because "celesta" just simply does not fit. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 08:52, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
:Additionally, a breaking piano sound is probably both easier to find and to recognise. Imagine if they did somehow find a breaking cello sound. How would we know that from some other noise? --[[User:DorianGray|DorianGray]] 08:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
::I agree (though I'm quick to point out that "celesta", being an Italian-based spelling, ''can'' be pronounced with a "ch"). Nonetheless, the syllable accent makes it clearly "cellist". Incidentally, I think it's perfectly possible that Strong Bad said "cellist" having no idea who he was throwing a brick at, since (1.) there's not exactly anything in this song that would suggest a cellist is playing at all and (2.) SB's style, which is mainly about squeedlies and meedlies, probably doesn't lead him to know or care that much about classical instruments. {{User:Heimstern Läufer/sig}} 09:10, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
:::"there's not exactly anything in this song that would suggest a cellist is playing at all" Um, you mean ''other than'' the obvious cello playing counterpoint in the second verse? --{{User:Jay/sig}} 09:12, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
