All Things Considered Interview - 8 May 2005

69.30.175.59: /* Transcript */

On May 8, 2005, The Brothers Chaps were interviewed by John Ydstie for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered".

Transcript
MELISSA BLOCK: There are lots of nasty characters lurking in the shadowy corners of the World Wide Web, but none quite as bad as Strong Bad.

STRONG BAD: Greetings, party people in the place to be! I am called Strong Bad! Hand over all your moneys in a paper and/or plastic bag!

MELISSA: You can see Strong Bad's exploits every week online at HomestarRunner.com. NPR's John Ydstie spoke to the site's creators, brothers Matt and Mike Chapman, and has this report.

STRONG BAD: Like I said, I'm Strong Bad. I've been described as cool, awesome, hot, video games, the hottest, and real real hot.

JOHN YDSTIE: He may be cool, but it becomes obvious right away that Strong Bad is not as tough as he thinks, especially when you get a good look at him. He does have a scary Mexican wrestler's mask and glowing green eyes. He wears boxing gloves all the time, but his round shirtless torso and his skinny arms and legs are anything but threatening. Strong Bad and a collection of dorky but somehow endearing characters live in the simple one-dimensional Flash animation landscapes of Freedom [sic] Country U.S.A.

There's Homestar Runner, the slightly dim high school jock.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, hello. Greetings, one and everyone. Welcome to me... Homestar... Runner...

JOHN: And there's Marzpian, Homestar's earnest vegetarian girlfriend.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hey stupid, I brought you this stuff! Oh, I mean, I brought you this veggie burger.

MARZIPAN: Oh, thanks, Homestar! Oh! He's just adorable!

JOHN: This quirky cartoon universe, visited by a million people each month is created by the brothers Matt and Mike Chapman in the family basement.

MATT CHAPMAN: Originally, um, we sort of wanted to create the feel of, uh, Saturday mornings in the, uh, 70s and 80s when we grew up, waking up early with a bowl of cereal, sitting in front of the TV watching cartoons, which I don't feel like really exist anymore.

JOHN: The web site is HomestarRunner.com and, uh, it's got a lot of characters, uh, but, uh, the one who seems to have taken over is Strong Bad.

MATT: Strong Bad started out as, uh, just the antagonist and he was kind of, uh, two-dimensional in more sense than he's just a drawing, and you know everybody likes the bad guy more, usually, anyway and so, uh, then eventually we decided to give him his own little feature. It's called Strong Bad Email where he would -- we would -- ask people to send Strong Bad an email and he would pick a real email from a fan, uh, and then answer it.

STRONG BAD: Dear Strong Bad, I think it's high time you composed a rock opera. You simply owe it to society. What should it be about? That's up to you. Best Wishes, Anonymous Contributor. Oh, poor guy. {typing sound} Hey! Mr. and Mrs. Contributor, way to name your kid! {fade into background}

MATT: The whole email is done from if-- how well Strong Bad can make fun of the person's name and/or grammar in the email initially, before he even gets to the subject of it, and so that was kind of the first time when we really started ramping up the site and just being like okay there's gonna be something new, uh, every week and it was Strong Bad.

{The Cheat noises are heard.}

STRONG BAD: Strong Badia Action Cool News 5! Top Stories with anchorperson Strong Bad!

JOHN: And the brothers do it all themselves. The writing, the animating, the voices. Matt does Strong Bad and he did most of the talking during our interview. Their creation is among the most popular flash animation sites on the web. Despite Strong Bad's dominance, the web site is named for the amiable but clueless Homestar Runner, who Strong Bad has elbowed aside.

MATT: He kind of overshadowed poor Homestar Runner {JOHN: Mm-hmm.} who's the namesake, obviously, and, uh, he's not very pleased about that, Homestar Runner. Took him awhile to realize it, I think, but now that he does he's not, uh, he's pissed.

JOHN: Homestar's gonna have a difficult time reclaiming his web site 'cause he doesn't have any arms.

{Matt and Mike laugh.}

MATT: That's true. He doesn't seem to have any problem with manipulating objects or having a soda or eating a burger, though, so...

JOHN: The cartoons have the look of the popular but off-color TV series South Park. The brothers say when they started the web site, lots of web animation was raunchy or gross-out humor. They decided to take a different tack and they've managed to produce a largely G-rated site that's so earnest and goofy, it's cool. Their brand of humor has attracted a very broad audience from twenty- and thirty-somethings tired of irony, to kids in elementary school.

MATT: We're very lucky in that way-- when we started off I think the first group that really caught on was, uh, sort of other Flash animators and graphic designers. Um, we were in some, um, you know computery designy magazines early on, and that seemed to be our initial audience and originally it didn't seem like there were very many kids, um, {MIKE: Yeah.) even high school kids. {MIKE: Not at all.} When they would e-mail us they would seem very embarrassed that they liked it 'cause it was this cartoon and they thought they were too old, you know, to like this cartoon--

MIKE: Yeah, even high school kids would seem like {Matt cuts in} I know you're making this for--

MATT: Yeah, they'd be like "I'm sixteen years old and I think this is funny" {Mike laughs.} and then college kids just started getting it after that; I don't know if the people-- the white collar crowd started telling their younger brothers that were still in college and younger sisters, uh, but then it seemed like college kids became our big focus and now, I mean, uh, it seems like more and more we hear from younger and younger kids.

JOHN: Younger kids like 13-year-old Brian Caroll from Silver Spring, Maryland.

BRIAN: These characters are so zany and it's so funny and it, it's just random a lot of the funniness is, I mean the hilarity, humor...

JOHN: Brian's little brother Danny, who's nine, and his classmate Dana Cook are also fans. In one of Dana's favorite episodes, Strong Bad demonstrates how to draw a dragon.

DANA: Trogdor's like a dragon that, um, Strong Bad makes and he, um, makes a song about him and, um, it's just really funny.

STRONG BAD: TROGDOR!! TROGODOR!! Burninating... {song fades into background}

JOHN: The growing audience for this wacky humor spawned a demand from fans for t-shirts and other kitsch. The Brothers Chaps, as their fans call them, obliged and now the sale of Strong Bad t-shirts and Homestar DVDs supports the web site and makes a good living for the brothers. They've refused to take advertising and rebuffed efforts to get them on TV.

MATT: One of the advantages of doing it the way we do is that, you know, it's 7 a.m., we're about to put this thing up and we come-- we think of some other joke, it's only gonna take us about 10 or 20 minutes to add something else in and animate it real quick, whereas, like, you know, if we were on TV or in some other thing that had this, regimented, uh, production schedule, we'd never be able to do that.

JOHN: Mike and Matt Chapman aren't interested in TV, but Strong Bad seems to have a talent for radio. Here's how he responded to an email from a fan who wanted advice on becoming a radio host.

STRONG BAD: The first rule of thumb for all radio personalities is to look absolutely nothing like how they sound. So once they've got the voice/appearance mismatch working, then it all just depends on what kind of radio station they work for. First up is public radio: smooth 'n' smarmy. {In smooth 'n' smarmy voice} You are listening to member-supported public radio.

JOHN: John Ydstie, and even though it doesn't sound like it, this is NPR News.

MARZIPAN: Dang old public radio. I never got my totebag.

{Brief musical interlude.}

STRONG BAD: This just in: Strong Bad is still awesome. You're listening to All Things Considered from NPR News.
NARRATOR: Previously on Strong Bad Email!

{An email asking about how Strong Bad types with boxing gloves on pops up. It reads:}

dear strong bad,
how do you type with boxing gloves on your hands?
aaron pratt
marion, in

NARRATOR: A familiar message!

{A second email comes up. It reads:}

Yo Strong Bad. What's crackin? I was
wondering how you type with your
boxing gloves on?
Heather

NARRATOR: Two of the same!

{Another email comes up. It reads:}

HOW DO YOU TYPE WITH THOSE BOXING
GLOVES ON? THAT IS AMAZING!

NARRATOR: And another one!

{Yet another email comes up. It reads:}

Dear Strong Bad,
How can you type so fast when your

STRONG BAD: {singing} Welcome to the Strong Bad Email dat-daddle-dun! Everybody get down!

{reading}

Dear Strong Bad,
Why don't you add some fingers onto
your boxing gloves so that people
stop asking how you can type with
boxing gloves on? They wouldn't have
to be permanent. They'd be like the
phony antennae you buy at the joke store
or costume place.

Yours,
Lee Conrad
Edmonton, Alberta

{Strong Bad stops momentariliy and says "Palace, Lee. I think you mean costume palace." after reading "costume place"}

STRONG BAD: {typing} Fake fingers, eh, Lee? Well, I do hate those emails. Hmmmmmm...

{We do a fade-out like we're going into his imagination. We see him at Bubs' Concession Stand.}

STRONG BAD: Hey, Bubs! Gimme a little something-something.

BUBS: How many you need?

STRONG BAD: I'll take three.

{He holds up a hand which has a candle, a leg from his Strong Bad Action Figure, and a shrimp for fake fingers. Transition to the basement where he's rocking out to music with Strong Mad and they're throwing horns up, with the index and pinky fingers extended. Strong Bad has various objects for fingers. You can see Strong Sad's head in the corner of the room. Then we cut to him in the locker room with Coach Z.}

COACH Z: Looks like you got some type of a prawn on there...

STRONG BAD: Yeah...

COACH Z: Maybe a little leg...

STRONG BAD: Yup.

COACH Z: Ooh! And a candle! That's a good one.

STRONG BAD: Yeah, I think that's my best one. You know. Keeps-a me warm at night!

{cut to Homestar standing on a soapbox with fake arms attached}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: And frankly, I'm worried tha—

STRONG BAD: Hey, shut up, Homestar!

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, hey, Strong Bad!

STRONG BAD: You look ridiculous!

{cut back to Compy, where Strong Bad is typing with the fake fingers on and making numerous errors}

STRONG BAD: Well, Lee, it's a good idea in theory but uh, in reality, I don't think it would work out very well. But it would be pretty cool to be able to do the evil fingers. {What's actually typed: "qwelo jwee, ufs gopod isda treery vuit yuiyyj, un tweanouty U du'p yhij utz quijf reardy owd vera nis. bu6 rt woild b pletyt gool yo be swabl tp do teh ebil flindas." Stops typing.} Anyways, I don't wanna be around when this shrimp goes bad. Whooh!

{The Paper comes down. Strong Bad starts playing with the shrimp.}

STRONG BAD: {doing the voice of the shrimp} I'm a shrimp! Doingita-doingita-doing! Don't eat me, somebody, oh no, I'm a shrimp...

Easter Eggs
*When you see Strong Bad talking to Coach Z, click on one of the lockers to Coach Z's right (your left), on the handle specifically. What is going on with Strong Sad?
*When you see Homestar with his goofy arms, click on the side of the box. Strong Sad is in trouble. Very very creepy.....
**It is possible to close the locker and box after opening them. They are closed using the same method as used when opening them.

Fun Facts
Trivia
*When Strong Mad is headbanging, this is the first time you see a top view of his shoulders. They are at right angles, almost cubic.
*This is the first time you see the side of the Compy 386.
*The Compy appears to have a wireless keyboard.
*This is the first appearance of the soap box.

Remarks
*Strong Sad is also seen unconcious on the floor behind Strong Bad and Strong Mad while they are headbanging.
*Possible explanations for the "dead" Strong Sad are that this is Strong Bad's imagination and Strong Bad's phone conversation in 50 emails.
*The crate Homestar is standing on reads "ELEVEN SOAPS."
*At the end, you can still click on the contrast buttons. Pressing Tab helps.
*Homestar's right arm (on his right) is made out of dryer tubing and gummi worms, while the left arm is made out of a wiffle ball bat and a foam hand with the text "GO SPORTS!" on it
*When Strong Bad's imagination ends and the cloud zooms closed, the foam finger at the end of Homestar's whiffle ball bat becomes a baseball mitt.

Glitches
*When you press and hold the tab key during the transition from Strong Bad in front of the Compy to ordering at Bubs' Concession Stand, The contrast keys on the compy are still clickable even though the computer isn't being viewed, Strong Bad ordering at Bubs' is.

Inside References
*The song that Strong Bad and Strong Mad are head banging to, "Moving Very Slowly," was later made into a Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits song. However, although the song itself has always been there, the lyrics weren't added until after the CD came out.
*The golden whiffle bat used as one of Homestar's arms is also the one used in the email your friends.

Real-World References
*The introductory narration and slanted camera angles are a reference to the old 1960s Batman TV series, in which previous episodes were recounted in much the same tone and wording.
*The action figure is most likely resemblence of wrestling legend George "The Animal" Steel.

Fast Forward
*The phrase "costume palace" is referred to in the King Of Town's character video, when the King says that he didn't "just buy a crown from the Costume Palace."

Strong Bad's Fingers
*In front of the TV Strong Bad has a shrimp, an Xacto knife, a leg, and a ketchup bottle on his right glove (which was not there in the previous scene). On his left is an action figure, a leg, a gummi worm, and another shrimp.
*In the locker room, he has a candle, a leg, and a shrimp on his right, and the lit cigar from the Meet Marshie ad replaces the leg on his left.
*One of Strong Bad's false fingers appears to be a leg taken off one of the Homestar Runner action figures from an Easter egg in the SB email action figure.
*When yelling at Homestar, he adds a D-cell battery (also from the Meet Marshie ad) to his left glove. This is the layout he has at the end of the email as well.
*When typing, the battery is missing, and his right glove only has the Xacto knife and leg.

DVD Version
*The original version of "Movin' Very Slowly" (as in non-CD version) that Strong Bad and Strong Mad headbang to is included as opposed to the newer one.
*This email features hidden creators' commentary. To access it, switch your DVD player's audio language selection while watching.

Commentary Transcript
MIKE: So this email is called "fingers."

MATT: Clearly, this is a reference to one of our most very favorite TV shows of all time.

MIKE: That's true, Friends.

MATT: No, Mike, The Bantam. Bantam 2: The Dark Times.

MIKE: {overlapping} Ohhh, Batman, yes, starring Adam West and...Burt Ward.

MATT: Yeah. They always had those great, like, 10 minute long recaps in the second of, like, the first episode.

MIKE: {overlapping} Yeah, exactly! Like half of the episode was just recapping the previous episode.

MATT: And then they always did this flashing... it'd be like "Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel" and they'd—they'd flash like that.

MIKE: It used to be on TV Land a year or so ago, but it's not on anymore.

MATT: And we'd watch it every day.

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: It was great.

MIKE: Yeah, it was great. That needs to come out on DVD.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: Adam West, if you're listening, {Matt laughs} you should put those out on DVD.

MATT: I'm sure he is in control of all rights. OK. {slight pause} Costume Palace, yeah.

MIKE: Uhm, so what else goes on in here? Oh, uhm, "fake fingers, eh Lee?"

MATT: Well there's the George "The Animal" Steel—

MIKE: Yes

MATT: —uhh, what do they call those? Bend 'Em wrestler—I forget, are they just Bend 'Ems?

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: I don't remember what they're...

MIKE: Yeah, but he was a posable...had wire running through...

MATT: Yeah. I used him later for a, uhm, a—there you go.

MIKE: There's the song that became "Moving Very Slowly," by Taranchula.

MATT: Yeah. And of course this has the through-line of dead Strong Sad throughout it.

MIKE: You got a shrimp, uh... a candle, a cigar, a gummi worm, a George "Animal" Steel action figure, and a leg of—

MATT: Looks like some He-Man, some He-Man miscellanous man figure. Some duct tape—ooh, he has a battery that time! Wait, what's the thing that he says? Oh, "ebil flindas," is that what—

MIKE: "Ebil flindas."

MATT: Yeah. Oh, what he's gonna say, yes. This is one of those, uh, occasions where Strong Bad—it's not done! That's what I was just talking about.

MIKE: Ohhh yeah.

MATT: Kinda mumbles to himself. I love this.

MIKE: {imitating Strong Bad's tone} I'm a shrimp! Oh no, I'm— {normal voice, quickly} now it's over.

And this sentence about Linux--The name is often thrown around as a buzzword by those who do not know what it is, which explains Strong Bad's absolutely random use of the name--sounds rather pompous, even condescending. ~ Aero 11:44, 16 Nov 2004 (MST)
maybe not, maybe they just assume that most of their fans use ie and thats why they always make the webpages appear like ie error pages.
Mac popup?
Is the thing explaining how the Mac OS X popup looks really necessary? Why wouldn't it be otherwise? And complete with a screenshot? No offence, just seems kinda obvious. ~ Aero 19:56, 15 Nov 2004 (MST)
:I'm more bothered by it not being a thumbnail, as is seemingly standard nowadays.
:Also... about this line:
:"It also seems to be able to evade pop-up blockers. Uh oh, don't let the ad companies find out about this..."
:What pop-up blocker are you using? Both SP2 and Google blocked the pop-up until I told them to trust HSR.com, so that doesn't hold true. At all. Shadow Hog 20:45, 15 Nov 2004 (MST)
::Aero has brought up a good point here-- the needless screenshot seems to make this already long article (mainly due to the long transcript) even longer. The fact that Mac OS X displays popups with a different bar across the top would be justified if, on The System Is Down or Not the 100th Email!!!, there were a discussion on how "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" only applies to people using the Internet Explorer browser. The overall point being the TBC most likely chose to display popups in the style that they did expecting the most number of users to be using the aforementioned browser (along with Windows). And of course there are going to be users of other browsers and operating systems. I'm sure most of us can agree that we are able to imagine what the differences may be without the need for a screenshot. --Teh P. 22:35, 15 Nov 2004 (MST)
::I'm of the opinion that the Mac OS X thing doesn't belong. It just doesn't seem all that important. Do we really need the name of the "Making out with Marzipan" file in the Fun Facts? I mean, it's being linked to already, and I don't recall things like that being in the Fun Facts for any other e-mail...
