Talk:Tandy 400

Amorbis: Dirt

featuredarticle

For some reason
For some reason, Strong Bad has never referred to the Tandy as "the Tandy".

Tandy's Gender
I think the Tandy must be a female computer since in the e-mail "sisters" (e-mail #35) Strong Bad says "and the old girl's working again" in the beginning. I refer to my computer as a female since the old clunker is very temperamental. (lol.) --Osiris-Kitty 01:55, 19 Nov 2004 (MST)

* I don't think the computers were really ever given a specific gender. They're just computers. Besides, 'the old girl' is just a figure of speech. Good observation though. -- Thunderbird 03:31, 19 Nov 2004 (MST)
*It should be noted that, in invisibility, when the Tandy is lying in the trash, it says "Tell the printer I'll miss HER". -Clever Ben
**Yea, I noted that a few weeks ago, here. Under 'Fun Facts' I think, or something. -- Thunderbird 14:32, 23 Nov 2004 (MST)
**Just because Tandy said "Tell the printer I'll miss her", it doesn't mean that Tandy is a male. Tandy and the printer could simply be friends. I think Tandy is a girl, and I think the Compy and the Lappy are guys. As for the Tangerine Dreams and the Pom Pilot, I'm not sure what their gender is. -- Ian911299
*Strong Bad refered to the Compy as his brother in virus --ninja pirate 17:10, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
**Hmmm... Quite true. In that case, I don't WANT to know anymore... -- [[User:Thunderbird L17|<small><tt><font color=gold>⇔Thunderbird⇔</font></tt></small>]] 17:32, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
**That was nothing significant: just a slip of the tongue. He corrected himself immediately afterwards. --Upsilon 19:21, 5 Dec 2004 (MST)
:Whatever anything is, I find this debate seemingly pointless. --Gafaddict 15:44, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

Steep Prices and Trees
:"Bubs later salvaged the Tandy 400 and sold it to The King of Town for $900."

Is this part true? Where is it from? I can recall Strong Bad needing $900 from Strong Sad to get a new computer in gimmicks, but I can't find any info on how much Bubs sold it for. -BazookaJoe 14:51, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

:I don't remember that, either. I've removed it until someone can show something different. &mdash; It's dot com 15:26, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

::"Tandy 400! Slightly Not-Working - Only $900!!" is what the title of the King_of_Town_Email page reads. 15:30, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

:::Oh, YEAH!! There it is. I couldn't remember. -BazookaJoe 15:34, 9 Jul 2005 (UTC)

::::Those Chapos with their subtleties! Amount put back in. &mdash; It's dot com

Real Computer
On the fact that the Tandy 400 was a real computer, it's true! I heard it from a librarian in an obscure library in Northeast Harbor, ME: "The first computer my son had was a Tandy 400." (all the library's computers were Tandys).
-Tapd260

Flashback Computer?
Since it has now appeared twice, should we change the computer used in personal favorites and lady...ing to 'Flashback Computer', or something else appropriate? It was never stated that that computer is supposed to be the Tandy, it could be that it's supposed to be a computer even older than the Tandy. Any thoughts? I'm up for moving it. 16:56, 21 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Mixed Message
At the end of gimmicks when Strong Bad is in Strong Sad's room after the Tandy explodes, he says he liked that computer. While in sisters he says he hates it. Is this just because he missed an oppertunity of hooking up with Ali and Ali's sister? User:Catman87

:Yes. 00:48, 28 Sep 2005 (UTC)

::In fact, they were probably a play on each other, and his growing hatred of the Tandy. How he says he liked it, then two emails later, says the exact opposite in the same tone. 01:44, 28 Sep 2005 (UTC)

The Tandy is Not Dead!
The tandy even after it's been gotten rid of as shown in "vacation" it is not dead in ghosts it is shown that it seeks vengence on Strong Bad it is still poping up hear and there like in pumpkin stencals and 3-D menu #2 (easter egg). Like the cheat "The Tandys not Dead"!
:Doesn't its being a ghost mean that it has died? --DorianGray

Dirt
Has anyone noticed some brwon dirt in the lower left corner of the tandys screen? I noticed it when viewing a flash file.

|
| Piemonade is composed of a slice of pie stuck in a glass of lemonade with lots of ice cubes in it. Around The Office it is known as p-nade. It may be related to Melonade.
| other days
|-
|
| Schenectady Crispies is a breakfast cereal that contains "mad chunks of real dough." It's slogan is ""Schenectady Crispies are so freaking good, they taste twice! Once in your mouth, and once in your esophagus!" They debuted as an Easter egg in the email "labor day," but they later appeared in the email "the bet," where it is shown that The King of Town likes them. They were named after the sender of the email "labor day," who went by the name "Chrispy" and hailed from Schenectady, NY. Schenectady has the ZIP code 12345, which is notable given The Brothers Chaps propensity for unique Zip Codes. The phrase, "I hope I don't get caught!" is likely referring to cereal commercials that had inane plots which made no sense. Several of these involved a character trying to steal cereal, such as Trix and Fruity Pebbles.
| Staple Sauce is a sauce eaten by What's Her Face, in Teen Girl Squad Issue 9, as part of a musical montage. She eats a heaping bowl of the sauce, which results in her death. It appears to made up of paste and staples.
|-
|
| Suge Brown is a brand of brown sugar for which Strong Sad apparently has a penchant for eating at 4 am on Saturday mornings. Its motto is "Don't Borrow From Thy Neighbor!". It is sold in boxes weighing one whole pound.
|-
|
| Super Mud is a product mentioned in the Strong Bad Email "date." It is apparently a type of liquified dirt &mdash; packaged in a coffee can &mdash; that has a high degree of quality, or at least possesses some exceptional trait. While on a date with Marzipan, Homestar Runner unwittingly drank a mug full of Super Mud (with which Strong Bad had switched his gourmet coffee) and immediately spat it onto his girlfriend's face. After Strong Bad witnessed this occurrence on his New Secret Security Camera Monitor, he was heartily amused: "Marzipan's gotta face fulla Super Mud and I'm feelin' fine."
|
| Suudsu (pronounced SUD-zoo) is The Cheat's favorite bedtime snack. He needs it to fall asleep at night, along with "The Denzel" and other rigamarole. Strong Bad has also taken to it, describing it as "Pure Genius!" and "G-E-W-D, gewd". Some mornings The Cheat, if he is still alive after being subjected to bug bombs, will fix Strong Bad and Strong Mad a big pitcher of this delicious concoction. Simply pour skim milk into a glass and add gummi bears. Pure genius!
| Bubs' Old Pizza is another fine product that Bubs sells, presumably from his concession stand. Homestar Runner is his delivery boy, bringing The Cheat's order to him in the email "privileges." Judging from the name, and the slogan "It's-a really old," the product is not very fresh. |
| Little is known about Strong Bad's EGGS "brand type cereal" other than the fact that it originated in an Easter egg at the end of Strong Bad Email morning routine. This breakfast cereal claims to be "A nutritious part of your morning routine" and essentially has the endorsement of Strong Bad. It is interesting to note that all the types of eggs featured on the box were originally found in the couch by Strong Sad during the aforementioned Strong Bad Email. In the nutrition facts listed on the box as "side words", "0 mg" is cited seven times. The ingredients on the side of the box say "Eggs, eggs, eggs, and two more eggs."
|
| Sugar Crunchy Cheat Commandos...O's Sugar Cereal is a breakfast cereal made by Cheap as Free foodstuffs. The product was introduced by a commercial in which several members of the Cheat Commandos were saved from exhaustion in the desert by a welcome delivery of the cereal. Ironically, they are not O's, but instead are a Cap'n-Crunch-type cereal. The cereal is not part of a nutritious breakfast, nor is it a delicious breakfast, but rather, a "ridiculous" one. They come in two varieties: "regular," and with Fluffy Puff Marshmallows.

Fun Facts
Explanations
*This toon was originally released on Friday, January 13th, 2006. The original email dragon was released Monday, January 13th, 2003, exactly three years prior.
*Stinkoman's debut was in japanese cartoon, which was released on January 6th, 2003, explaining Stinkoman's comment about his birthday being last week.

Trivia
*This is the first time Trogador has appeared in a toon on the website, previously only being shown at the NYU Talk. The Brothers Chaps mentioned at that time that they would likely never put Trogador on the site.

Remarks
*The Trogdor song uses the version recorded for Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits, though they cut from "cottages" to the tag line, "And the Trogdor comes in the...", thus matching the form of the original song.

Goofs
*When the screen freezes to the sketch style, Stinkoman's hat disappears.

Inside References
*In 3 Times Halloween Funjob, Stinkoman stated that he likes prawns, which explains the one on his birthday hat.
*The ominous music that plays during the "3 years ago..." screen is the same as the music from the Shock-You-Mentary on Gingivitis that The Cheat watches in bedtime story.
*The start of this toon is taken from sbemail dragon
Free Country, USA

Amorbis:

Free Country, USA, is where the Homestar Runner Universe is centered. All of the main characters live, work, and play here.

Geographical Features and Locations
Free Country, USA, features a verdant field that typically serves as a central link between the various features of the landscape. At the center of the field itself is The Stick, which functions as a landmark and a meeting place for Strong Bad and whomever he chooses to meet there. The edge of the field is lined with what appear to be trees. They represent the edge of Free Country. Probably also somewhere in or near the field is a stream with a picturesque stone bridge. Rounding out the natural features are mountains (usually seen only from a distance), a pond and, apparently, a seashore with a wharf. The foothills of these mountains are likely located in the nearby woods, as they contain at least one cliff.

Specific locations in Free Country are treated with a certain ambiguity. Somewhere at the edge of The Field is the Athletic Field; logically, Coach Z's locker room is near the Athletic Field. Somewhere near the Athletic Field is Bubs' Concession Stand. Other locations include a "Town Hall" (discussed later) and the Marshmallow Stand, a once-popular haunt for Homestar that has not been seen in a while but is presumably still around somewhere.

Characters' Homes
As with Free Country's locations, the homes of different characters do not exist in rigidly established locations. With the exception of Coach Z's locker room and The Cheat's home (which is also the King of Town's grill and therefore always near the King of Town's castle), Marzipan's house, Homestar's house, and the house of the Brothers Strong, as well as the King's castle itself, are all found in locations that have no clear geographical relation to each other.

Flora and Fauna
The flora of the land is somewhat sparse. Though individual trees are seldom seen up close in Free Country, they are presented as being deciduous as opposed to evergreen (other than Decemberween trees), evidenced by the barren branches seen during Free Country's autumn. Shrubs and the occasional bush make appearances from time to time; some bushes have been known to have Senor Cardgage emerge from them in some instances, though these events are not considered dangerous so much as they are creepy.

Fauna is in even shorter supply. Save for the fish in the pond, a few crickets, at least one fly, cockroach, and the characters themselves, no animal life has yet been seen in Free Country, USA.

The King of Town, at one point, had sheep. Whether he still owns them is open to debate.

Politics
Free Country appears at first glance to be a monarchy, since it is nominally ruled by The King of Town. However, since Free Country is a municipality and not a kingdom, the King of Town would technically be a lord. As well, the self-conferred sovereign's reign is not recognized by the populace. Therefore, Free Country could be considered to be in a state of anarchy, where there is no accepted centralized government but the members of the community co-exist with loosely established rules that maintain order.

To this end, Free Country can muster a meager police force to ensure that anyone engaged in criminal behavior (to date, only Strong Bad and The Cheat) are placed firmly in jail (a large cardboard box). Since there is no need for an army (nor a government to stand one up), Free Country has no official military. But it is home to the Homestarmy, a meager militia that includes a popcorn machine and is led by Homestar Runner. The Homestarmy once attempted to conquer Strongbadia, but appears to represent no cohesive political movement (other than expressing discontent stemming from "playing second fiddle to a two-bit wrestleman and his yellow dog").

Besides the King's castle (which would be the seat of government if the King's rule had any legitimacy), there seems to be a "Town Hall" of sorts, which has been used for various purposes, including a newsroom, police station, and a set for the Dangeresque films, though not for actual political administration.

The name and the currency used may imply that this town is in the United States, but no municipal, state or federal government seems to apply to it. They may have to pay taxes, however, as evidenced by A Decemberween Pageant and Arcade Game.

Strongbadia
Within Free Country's borders, the territory of Strongbadia exists as an autonomous enclave. Strongbadia has a flag, a national anthem, and has even had to defend its autonomy from outside aggression (as seen in army). Whether or not Strongbadia is a "real" country is open to debate, since the permanent population of Strongbadia is a tire and it's only the size of a backyard.

Other Territories
Mentioned from time to time (and seen only via the depicted map) are other territories outside Free Country. If the circuitous path of Homestar's journey to Potamia for The Yello Dello is to be believed, Free Country borders the territory of Far Off Lands. Very little, if anything, is known about these territories or their relation to Free Country, although Prance is known to make at least one Homestar Runner related product.

Economics
The economics of Free Country are as ambiguous as the locations and politics of the territory. The local currency is U.S. dollars, although the official currency is augmented by a strong barter system that allows trade of goods and services; most local commerce occurs at Bubs' Concession Stand. Though their use has not been seen recently, pencil shavings (as shown in lackey) were accepted as currency at one time, though this may just be because of The Cheat's swindling. It seems that there is some crabbing industry, as there are crab traps at the wharf (which often claim baby seals), even though this supposed wharf has never been seen.

Employment
Bubs works at his stand and as a general fix-it man. Homestar, Strong Bad, and The Cheat (when not doing freelance Flash work) work in some kind of an office, at least occasionally. Coach Z is presumably some kind of a coach and a gym class teacher. The King of Town employs The Poopsmith for reasons he does not care to disclose, as well as a chef and a blacksmith. It has not been revealed whether the remaining characters have jobs.

Free Country Through Time
In addition to its current, contemporary depiction, Free Country has been shown in the past and possibly in the future.

Old-Timey Free Country
In the 1930s, Free Country was characterized by dirt roads, picket fences, carnival tents, antiquated Industrial Revolution-era factories and even a graveyard, none of which have survived the passage of time. As with the rest of the USA during this time period, Free Country was economically depressed, with the population being forced to subsist on dry meal, water soup, and parsnips. Commerce, such as it was, was located at a dilapidated depot.

And, though there is some debate as to whether or not Free Country was still under Prohibition during this time period, some residents enjoyed the occasional nip of hooch regardless.

Free Petry Dish USA
In highschool, Strong Bad claims that the entirety of Free Country, USA was, in the past, merely on a petri dish, with all its inhabitants being single-cell organisms. However, considering his purported "unphotographic memory", it's very possible that such a place never truly existed.

Futuristic Free Country?
In the futuristic year 20X6, Free Country may or may not be one and the same as Planet K, which looks much like the current Free Country. If so, Free Country will grow to feature significantly more architecture, to the extent of having a full city (a quality the territory currently lacks). Nothing is yet known about the economic or political state of this ultramodern version of Free Country, though there is a significantly higher frequency of fights and challenges faced by its residents, which include various robots.

Estimated Real-World Location
Viewers of Homestar Runner have variously speculated about the "real" location of Free Country, USA, though it can be safely assumed The Brothers Chaps prefer to leave its location undetermined. The following collected observations may be used to interpret the "real" location of the territory.

*The scene in the Theme Song Video where Homestar runs around the planet and a star appears on a United States map would lead one to believe that it's possible that Free Country is somewhere in northern Nebraska.
*In the email "radio," the CGNU radio station's call letters are given as WSBD. Real-world radio designations would place Free Country east of the Mississippi river.
*Free Country is likely in a northern latitude or high altitude given the snowy weather around Decemberween.
*In the email anything, Homestar refers to his two liter bottle of Mountain Dew as "soda" which is a term more used in the northeast and in the west. In parts of the Upper Midwest it is frequently called "pop".
*The Brothers Chaps themselves live in Atlanta, Georgia, making it possible that Free Country is located in the Southeast.
*In "Homestar Presents: Presents", Marzipan references baby seals and crab traps at the wharf, suggesting that Free Country is near the ocean, or at least a salt-water body.
*In Homestar vs. Other Little Girl, Homestar claims he does not live in Texas, meaning he must live somewhere else.

Trivia
The Strong Bad Email flashback marked the first time that a character actually said the name "Free Country USA."
