Kerny Mantis: Podcast update

Main Page Talk

Question
Why weekly featured articles instead of daily featured articles? We're supposed to feature every article on the site - and we'll do it quicker with daily articles. User:60.230.37.94|60.230.37.94 06:53, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
:Because not every article is up to snuff yet. Also, there is very little to write on some articles, especially list-based ones. Further, we'd probably run out fairly quickly if we did articles every day instead of every week. We only have about 1900. Even if we could find something to write on every article, we'd run out in about 5 years. And then what would we do? --DorianGray 06:59, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Lucky Yates Show
Why are there three non-talk page links to the Lucky Yates Show, but the article had never been created? I would create it, but I've never heard of the Lucky Yates Show. 21:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
:We don't have any details on the content of the appearance at this time is why. We don't know anyone who was able to attend the show. --DorianGray 21:39, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
::I don't link any red links look good. Could we remove them? 21:51, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
:::My take: a red link indicates that we should have an article about a subject, but nobody's created it yet. I think we should leave them, and hopefully somebody with some information will come across one of those links and create the page. 21:54, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Image
I desperately need to upload an image. What's an autoconfirmed user? Whatever it is, can I please be one so I can upload this image? Empaire 08:36, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
:Hi Empaire. Unless I'm mistaken, you will probably become an autoconfirmed user in the next few hours. Sit tight! Autoconfirmation is just something we do here so that trolls and vandals can't register a username and then immediately start uploading bad images. &mdash;BazookaJoe 08:47, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
:I'm just curious as to what image it is that desperately needs to be uploaded or the wikiworld will a splode. Danny Lilithborne 10:03, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Proofreaders?
Is anybody going to change the misspelling of Burnination (BurninIation) in the "What's New" frame? It's been there for two days now. Apparently I can't edit it, so this is my only option.
:Fixed. 16:11, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Podstar Download template...
Is there a Podstar Runner download template similar to watch? I was trying to find one to add to the latest update. 20:44, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
:Currently there isn't. The current template (Podstar download) is just for creating external links in articles. Also, since podcasts are basically downloadable versions of existing content (and not exactly embedded media), I'm not sure if it's absolutely necessary to include a direct link, especially since both the Podstar Runner and toon pages would contain links. --Stux 20:50, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Where do you go to edit the recent toons template? If I can't, here is the problem:

Unblock
Why isn't there an unblock template? People who think they have been unfairly blocked might want to ask to be unblocked. 124.180.63.58 11:23, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
:Generally people in this position should post on a sysop's talk page - probably the sysop who blocked them - petitioning their block. Though, to be honest, I have seen very few blocks, if any at all, which have not been entirely reasonable. The few which were not were quickly corrected. 12:51, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
::Note also that, unlike at Wikipedia, our software is not set up to allow blocked users to edit their own talk pages. This means an unblock template wouldn't work here, since a blocked user cannot add it to their talk page. If a user wishes to contest their block, email is one option. 16:50, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Image borders
In IE7, I've noticed that when an image on the main page has a height of an odd number of pixels, the bottom portion of the border around it doesn't appear correctly. The image appears to get shifted down a pixel and covers it. I decided to try it in Firefox and the borders all appear fine. But is there any way we can fix that for us die-hard IE users? Still plenty of us around, you know... 05:58, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
:While I'm sure the developers want to ensure good rendering on all browsers, you must also be aware that IE is notoriously non-compliant with the recommendations of the W3C. As such, some problems may require a lot of work to fix in that one browser, and some may be irrpairable. 20:15, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Marzipan's Greeting
MARZIPAN: Hi, this is Marzipan. I'm currently drowning in the abyss, but please leave me a message anyway. {beep}

Message 6
THE KING OF TOWN: {angry} Well, well, well, Miss Marzithang, any idea why Strong Bad's been goin' around calling me a "stankwad", or why the Bubs keeps referring to me as a "wad in the grass"? Hmm? Any idea? Maybe because you told everybody that my middle name is Wad?! That was supposed to be our secret! I thought we had a deal. Well, don't blame me if all of a sudden your questionable voluntary surgery becomes public knowledge! The Wad is out!

Message 5
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh hello, yes, middle of our conversation? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I just met with him. Oh yeah, he's real famous. Rich. Rich with money. How many? Five? Five's good. {whispering} Psst! Sorry, Marzipan. I had to perpetrate like I was talking, {normal volume} on account of this hot blonde thing walked by. Purple dress, broomstick style. Oh yeah, you're jealous. Yeah, what? No, he's half robot.

Message 4
BUBS: Hey Marzipan, it's the Bubs. Say, uh, do you know any other women around here? I mean, you're not exactly my type, and I need somebody to go to the movies with. It's getting desperate! I'll take anything at this point&mdash; lady duck, lady pine cone, lady pillow. I gotta go to the movies with somebody! So if you know of any kind of lady item, put in a good word for ol' Bubs. And tell 'em they'll get 10% off at the concession stand! {quickly, as the following words appear onscreen} Discount will not be honored!

Message 3
COACH Z: {with hip-hop beat playing in background} Hey, yo, Marz-ay! Coach Z, all up in the stujo. Just cut my new record, want you to be a sassy high-pitched background singer on this new track! Maybe sing a-like: "Word, I'm out!" Or maybe like we sampled you from an old '70s disca tape, and you say: "You ain't the type of man that you used to be!" Basically want to just get you up in the stujo, which is kind of a cardboard box, with a micoraphone in it, not plugged in. Uh... maybe like, disregard... that last part. I'm out, peace, love!

Message 2
THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises}

STRONG BAD: Uh, he says you're a face. A facewich. Like a face witch, like rides a broomstick? Or a facewich like between two pieces of bread?

THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises}

STRONG BAD: You're a facewich and blow up your house.

THE CHEAT: {frustrated The Cheat noise}

STRONG BAD: Your nose! Blow up your nose.

THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises}

STRONG BAD: Epsom salt?! The Cheat, are you sure that's the direction you wanna go with this prank call?

THE CHEAT: {The Cheat noises, gnawing noises}

STRONG BAD: And now, you're just gnawing on the phone. Gimme that! I'll show you how it's done. {quickly} Marzipan, this is Dean Prankcaller from the You're Gross Institute calling to ask you to come speak at our graduation ceremony. If you're interested, please walk into the bathroom and stare at your gross face until you make yourself puke. Thank you, the end, very much. {normally} Now that's a prank call! {more gnawing noises} Ugh...

Message 1
QUESTIONABLE SURGEON: Mmmmmm yes, hello, Miss Marzipan. This is your questionable surgeon. We were just calling to ask if we could use the before and after photos from your {photos appear; the "before" photo shows Marzipan with a large nose and the "after" photo shows her as usual} questionable voluntary surgery in one of our advertisements {pronounced as "ad-VER-tis-ments"}. Yes, that's right, I pronounced it "ad-VER-tis-ments".
:{Bubs is at the movies with Lord Quackingstick, who has a blonde wig. Part of Strong Bad's head is visible in another seat.}
:BUBS: I gotta tell ya, Lady Quackingstick, I'm having a great time at the movies!
:STRONG BAD: {as Lady Quackingstick, in a sultry voice} Quack, quack!

Fun Facts
Trivia
*This answering machine has a new loading screen, showing a corner of Marzipan's table rather than the old spinning Homestar Runner logo.

Remarks
*The Main Page, toons links and the cartoon itself were added some time before the page was made, so users were met with a "404'd" message for the first few hours after the update. However, it was viewable by looking at the Flash file.
*"Republic of Wad" was mentioned one week earlier as a country of manufacture of unlicensed merchandise in licensed.
*Bubs seems to have elbows again, as seen in the Easter egg at the end. In recent appearances, Bub's arms have been drawn without elbows and instead have been animated as a single object, giving his arms a tentacle-like appearance.
*The buttons on the answering machine can still be pressed even while the before and after images are blocking them.

Goofs
*The Answering Machine button in the Toons menu still links to Answering Machine 14.2.

Fixed Goofs
*When the toon was released, the Toons menu listed this toon as being released in 2007; this was changed to 2008 later that day.

Inside References
*Ducks, Bread, and Robots are mentioned.
*Lord Quackingstick appeared first in portrait.
*Bubs' dilemma refers to the fact that Marzipan is the only female main character.
*The Cheat gnaws on the phone.
*Judging by the way he speaks and says the lines "Mmmmmm" and "Yes, that's right," the questionable surgeon may have been the announcer who advertised Expen$e Account Ones in business trip and the Spicy Crispy Chicken Melt in nightlife.
*Coach Z's studio is a cardboard box.
*Homestar mentions the hot blonde's "broomstick style".
*The pictures from Marzipan's surgery purport to explain her lack of a visible nose.

Real-World References
*The phrase "perpetrate like I was talkin'" is from the 1989 rap song "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

<blockquote class="email">Hey there, Strong Bad!<br />
I was wondering. How long have you<br />
known Homestar? Is there some sort of<br />
flashback that could describe how<br />
and when you guys met?<br />
Your Fan,<br />
Jon, NH</blockquote>

{Instead of "New Hampshire," Strong Bad says "No Hamsters."}

STRONG BAD: {typing} Oh, I got flashbacks alright, Jon. I'm like, Discount Flashback Warehouse over here. But this particular flashback has way too much historical significance to be shown in anything but WIDESCREEEEEEEEEEEEN. Left side: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAH!

{As he says this with a resonating noise, the left side of the screen expands out. The camera then cuts out to a wide shot. Strong Bad stops typing and turns to his right.}

STRONG BAD: Right side: WOOOOOAHH—

{the right side of the screen starts to expand, then abruptly bounces out to its full extent, revealing Homestar.}

STRONG BAD: Wha-uh, what are you doin' over there?

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, I'm pretty much here every week. It's just that usually I'm behind the black.

STRONG BAD: Guess I should start...lookin' to the right more often.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: In fact, I think I might live here.

STRONG BAD: I don't think so. If you lived here, you'd have less non-broken bones. And more crushed spirits.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {leaning forward} Yes, sir.

STRONG BAD: Frame shift left! WOOOOOAAHHH!

{The screen starts shifting left to get Homestar out of the shot.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: See ya after the flashback!

{We go to a picture of Strong Bad on the moon with a tennis racket. The drawing is in the style of the original children's book, though the characters have limited animation. Strong Bad narrates the story but doesn't read everything&mdash;text that he doesn't read is included in this transcript in parentheses. Also, character voices are imitated and are denoted in brackets.}

STRONG BAD: {narrating} Strong Bad meets the Homestar Runner.

{The page turns to a picture of just Strong Bad.}

Everyone loves Strong Bad. He is an okay guy.

{The page turns to a picture of Strong Bad and Coach Z playing tennis on the moon.}

One day Strong Bad was finishing up a game of tennis on the moon with his pal, the Coach Z. He won 1,000,000 to 3. {Strong Bad} "You see, 3 is clearly a smaller number than a million," said Strong Bad. {Coach Z} "Ooooooh. Now I understand."

{The page turns to Strong Bad and Coach Z flying down a rainbow from the moon to earth.}

They flew on a sweet, sweet rainbow bridge back down to Free Country, USA.

{The page turns to Coach Z holding a towel and talking to Strong Bad.}

{Coach Z} "I'ma go shower up!" said the Coach Z. {Strong Bad} "Gross!" said Strong Bad. "Shut up!"

{The page turns to see Strong Bad walking toward a giant pink egg with yellow spots.}

Walking home, Strong Bad came upon a big ol' egg. "Waaaaaaaaagh!"

{The page turns to a closer view of Strong Bad and the egg.}

"I wonder what's inside," thought tiny-handed Strong Bad.

{The page turns to see Homestar behind the egg wearing a yellow shirt with a duck on it.}

{Homestar} "Hello! How do you like my egg, Mr. Strong Bad?" said a voice from behind. {Strong Bad} "Who the crap are you, Duckshirt?" asked No-shirt. {Homestar} "I'm The Homestar Runner!" said the duckshirt. "Some folk say I'm a terrific athlete."

{The page turns to a closer view of the scene.}

{Strong Bad} "Well I folk say you're a terrific liar!" (said Strong Bad.) "This is plainly my egg." {The Prince of Town} "What's all the commotion about?"

{The page zooms out, showing the Prince of Town looking at Strong Bad and Homestar.}

...said the svelt, young Prince of Town. "And who's this weirdo in the duckie shirt?" {Homestar} "I'm The Homestar Runner! Some folk say I'm a terrific (athlete!" said Duckshirt.) {Strong Bad} "Prancibald over here says this egg belongs to him, when I found it first."

{Zoom in to a closeup of the Prince of Town.}

{The Prince of Town} "We'll settle this with a ten-step footrace."

{The page turns to show a crowd of characters, including Mr. Bland and Señor from the original children's book. Everyone is watching Strong Bad and Homestar at the start line of a race.}

And so they all gathered for a ten-step footrace. The slim and trim young Prince of Town explained the rules.

{A piece of paper shows up reading: "Ten-step Footrace Official Rules. Rule One. Whoever goes the most distance in ten steps, will be the winner! Rule Two. No biting."}

{The Prince of Town} "Whoever goes the most distance in ten steps, will be the winner!"

{The page turns to see Strong Bad and Homestar at the line and Marzipan giving the startoff.}

{Marzipan} "Ready-and-set-and-go-now." {they start running, with Homestar counting} {Homestar} "One, two, three, four, five, six..." {Strong Bad takes tiny steps and is way behind} {Strong Bad} "Keep up the pace. Gotta break 4:40"

{The page turns to see silhouettes of everyone, and Homestar has reached the end.}

{Homestar} "Ten!"

{The Prince of Town} "And the Duckie-man is the winner. Loser gets the egg."

{The background music plays several confused notes, then the page turns to a closeup of Homestar, with Strong Bad and the egg in the background.}

{Homestar} "WHAAAAT??!!?&,:;%${}" {Strong Bad} "Hooray a-for me!!"

{The page turns to show Strong Mad holding the egg over his head while Strong Bad watches.}

And so Strong Mad helped to break open the egg. {Strong Mad tosses the egg}

{Turn the page to see the egg broke and a bunch of fishsticks pour out.}

And out poured a lifetime supply of fishsticks. And a The Cheat!!!!
{The Cheat springs out of the egg, then the page turns to a closeup of The Cheat. Turn the page again to see Strong Bad and The Cheat with the egg in the background.}

{Strong Bad} "Awesome! My very own a The Cheat!"

{The page turns again, showing everyone hanging out by a boombox.}

And so, The Cheat mashed play on an extremely expensive jambox with high-speed dubbing and everybody put their weight on it! {The Cheat plays a remix of the original intro music for H*R.com, and everyone dances.}

{Cut back to Strong Bad sitting at the stool, talking to Homestar, who's sitting on the floor listening to the tale.}

STRONG BAD: So that's pretty much how it all went down, huh?

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, yes. Read me another one! Another one!

STRONG BAD: Ohhhhh, very well. This one's called The Homestar Runner Gets Something Stuck In His Craw!

{Strong Bad pulls out a children's book of the same name. Compy beeps and turns blue with the caption "Congratulations! You have answered 100 emails." and pixelated fireworks.}

STRONG BAD: What the—whoah! Would ya look at that! 100 emails. I had no idea! I lost count around 51. Well, I suppose I should do something to celebrate... uh... ooh! I'll say email 100 times! == Fun Facts ==

Explanations
*To "stick in one's craw" is an idiom referring to a behavior or act that one can not tolerate. It originated as a literal statement, such as a stone being stuck in the craw of a bird; the stone is impossible to swallow, or tolerate.
*High-speed dubbing is a feature of many dual-cassette boomboxes that enables the user to copy one cassette tape to another at a higher speed than normal playback speed, albeit with less accuracy.
*A "doppelgänger" is commonly known as a "copy" of someone.
*The widescreen is 750×400 pixels, a perfect 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Normal toons are 550×400, or 1.375:1.

Trivia
*At 5 minutes in length, this was longest Strong Bad Email when it was released, and is the longest Compy 386-era email. It also has more Easter eggs than any other email.
*The DVD commentary for this episode reveals several interesting facts—originally, it would have been animated in the normal style, and would have told a different story, until the Brothers Chaps decided to re-write it halfway through. Originally, story elements included Strong Bad wearing a star shirt, and Marzipan attempting to do something about Homestar's awful fashion sense (his duckie shirt, and also in this version, a pair of sandals). She gets him a star shirt, and Strong Bad rips his own shirt off in protest, which is why nowadays, Strong Bad almost never wears a shirt.
*The email was assigned the URL of "http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemailahundred.html," breaking the convention of the previous ninety-nine. This was done because of Not the 100th Email!!!.
*The label on the disk in the floppy disk container reads "Cave Quest".
*This is the first time a character has mentioned Free Country, USA.
*Strong Bad actually says the word "email" exactly 100 times.
*This is the debut of live action in the Homestar Runner universe.
*This email and retirement are tied for the most Easter eggs in any email to date, with eight. They're second on the site total, tied with Halloween Fairstival and Halloween Potion-ma-jig. The toon with the most Easter eggs is 3 Times Halloween Funjob with ten.
*Old-Timey Strong Bad appearing with half a mustache was inspired by a waiter The Brothers Chaps once encountered who sported the same odd facial hair style.
*The font used on "The Homestar Runner Gets Something Stuck in his Craw" is Bauhaus 93, the same font used on Homsar's shirt.

Remarks
*It is debatable whether the story in the book really "happened", since Strong Bad could be making it up. Homestar verifies the tale, but this may just be typical, dense Homestar behavior.
*Though the style of the artwork and the voice acting for most of the characters resembled closely that of the classic Homestar cartoons, Strong Bad in the flashback, for some reason, sounds nothing like the real Strong Bad from Marshmallow's Last Stand era cartoons. Old Strong Bad's manner of speaking was very loud and dramatic (almost overacted), and he had a strong Mexican accent. Tiny Handed Strong Bad in the flashback is just the opposite, speaking in a monotonic, mumbling fashion.
*When he reads the Tandy e-mail, his accent is more like it is in the old cartoons (most notably, he pronounces "you" as "joo" a few times).
* Strong Bad walks ten steps before he even crosses the starting line.
*Strong Bad couldn't have lost count at email 51 because in Email #91 the intro is "Coming in at number 91, it's, EMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIL."
**Also, he knew that it was the 100th email because he confronted users trying to find the email before it was finished in Not the 100th Email!!!
*When the Compy said Strong Bad had answered 100 e-mails, that's not entirely true. He answered two in 50 emails, two more in 2 emails (3 more if you count the email answered while the clip was in fast forward), and you could say he answered more than one in huttah! (although he didn't answer any in anything or mile). Depending on your definition of "answering" an email, he read extras in spring cleaning (although they were promptly deleted). In sisters he accidentally deleted one email, then responded to and accidentally saved a second. If you count by each toon being an e-mail, then he still answered in excess of 103 e-mails, since the three bonus e-mails on the DVD are presumably pre-100th. In addition, there is a "preview email" in the TV Time Toons Menu and never before seen emails in personal favorites, but these could just be false history. So really, at the time of the hundredth e-mail, Strong Bad actually has answered more than 100 e-mails. The hundredth email was actually answered somewhere between Emails 83-94.
*If you look closely at Mary in the Limozeen Easter egg, you can see that he is wearing a Strong Bad baseball cap.
*The Old-Timey Strong Bad Easter egg contradicts That A Ghost, in which Old-Timey Strong Bad's mustache is depicted as having a skeletal structure. The Easter egg shows it as hair.
*In the Limozeen Easter egg, Gary and Mary seem to start reacting to Larry's line "We're from the band Limozeen!" before he finishes saying it.
*At times, the legs on the left-hand side of Strong Bad's desk rest on an uncarpetted area, however in this email they are resting on carpet.
*Homestar sits down on the floor, but he does not seem to have a butt, as his legs bend up into his shirt.
**This was also seen in extra plug.
*In the Easter egg, before she starts speaking, Marzipan's mouth looks like her third design's mouth. Once she begins talking it becomes the current style mouth again.
*The characters who didn't appear in the original book take their designs from the museum sketch book; they include Marzipan, Strong Mad, Strong Sad, and Bubs.

Goofs
*When Strong Bad says, "Keep up the pace, gotta break 4:40", there is no period at the end of the sentence.
*When Strong Mad breaks the egg, it cracks open, but nothing appears to be inside. In the next frame, "the lifetime supply of fishsticks" suddenly appears inside the egg.
*When Homestar says "Read me another one. Another one!", the outline on his head moves.
*At the very end of the email, changing the contrast on the Compy does not affect the glass of water on the screen.
*"Svelt", as it is spelled in the book, is actually spelled as "svelte".
*The bows of Senor Cardgage's glasses are missing.

Glitches
*When Strong Bad shifts the screen left, the carpet appears to slide to the right, moving without the stool and the table.
*When Homestar looks down in sadness (before Strong Bad shifts himself to the left to start the flashback) the lining for his head pops out of his shirt.
*In the Prince of Town Easter egg, we hear a brief blip of Homestar's Easter egg right at the end. This is due to the fact that the gotoAndStop() command is being performed later than it should be.
**Also, sometimes, you can hear several of the Easter eggs before they are played, possibly for the same reason.

Inside References
*The word "WEiRD" appearing at the beginning of the email is another instance of lowercase i's on the site.
*Strong Bad first uses "grrl" (seen here as grrrl) in i she be. The word is also used in the Teen Girl Squad Menu and The House That Gave Sucky Treats.
*Old-style Marzipan, Strong Sad, and Strong Mad are from the concept sketches.
*Old-style Coach Z and Bubs are from "Where My Hat Is At?."
*This marks another instance of Homestar Runner being referred to as prancy.
*Present in the flashback are Mr. Bland and Señor, who haven't been seen since Marshmallow's Last Stand.
*This is another example of mashing.
*The TV in the Discount Flashback Warehouse egg is from the old Telebision Toons Menu.
*The two e-mails in the Discount Flashback Warehouse egg are different town and band names.
*Senor Cardgage's use of the word "combolations" is a reference to the ending credits in japanese cartoon.
*In the Senor Cardgage Easter egg, Strong Bad says "Man, so cool!" He previously said this in kind of cool.
*In her Easter egg, Marzipan refers to her answering machine feature on the site.
**At the time this email was released, there were 10 answering machine versions.
*Coach Z goes to "shower up."
*In the Limozeen Easter egg, the band plays Because It's Midnite.
*Strong Bad pulls "The Homestar Runner gets something stuck in his craw" out of hammerspace.
*The melty candy bar Senor Cardgage holds up near the end is a Zagnut bar.

Real-World References
*"Put your weight on it!" was a famous line from the Dolemite movie Disco Godfather.
*The guitar Larry is holding in the Limozeen egg is the same guitar that Homestar Runner steals in Puppet Time, a Hamer "Bat" spin-off of the more popular Gibson Explorer shape. The bass Perry is holding is a Fender Jazz-Bass.
**It may also be a Jackson KE3 Kelly model.

Fast Forward
*Prancibald appears as a trading card name in trading cards.
*The duckie shirt makes an appearance in your funeral.
*Widescreen would later be used in virus.

DVD Version
*The Limozeen video is now in fullscreen and much higher quality.
**In addition, you can use your DVD player's angle Button while watching the Limozeen clip to change the clip's background image. There are three separate backgrounds in all.
*The email is presented letterboxed (black bars at the top and bottom) to maintain the widescreen ratio, so it may appear smaller in comparison to other cartoons on the DVD.
*The DVD version features hidden creators' commentary. To access it, switch your DVD player's audio language selection while watching.
Commentary Transcript
(Commentary by: Matt Chapman, Mike Chapman)

MATT: The guitar just fell on the floor.

MIKE: {laughs} Ooh, I like this, uh, part. The song&mdash;

MATT: Yeah, we should make a full song of that. And I'll never forget the way it was, Mike. I thought&mdash; I wanted it to be this sort of nostalgic punk rock song, you know, 'cause, what if we decided after doing a hundred we weren't going to make anymore Strong Bad Emails? So I wanted it to kinda be like that.

MIKE: We decided to do more.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: At least twelve more as of this commen&mdash; as of the time of this commentary.

MATT: Yeah. So Abdi LaRue, uh, was our first, uh, the first email.

MIKE: Mmm, that's true.

MATT: Was he just a fan that we tal&mdash; that just emailed a lot early&mdash; in the early days?

MIKE: {simultaneously} Yeah. Yup.

MATT: Or&mdash; he or she, we don't really know&mdash; do we know the gender of Abdi LaRue? I always assumed it was a guy.

MIKE: Yeah...?

MATT: Abdi, if you&mdash;

MIKE: I don't know any other Abdis, so&mdash;

MATT: {laughs} It's true. So this&mdash; we&mdash; a lot&mdash; a lot of gimmicks sort of in this one, visually. Uh, the widescreen thing...

MIKE: The song at the beginning. Cave Quest there&mdash;

MATT: {interrupting} That&mdash; That&mdash;

MIKE: Home&mdash; White character.

MATT: A game Mike and I made, Cave Quest.

MIKE: On the Apple II...

MATT: C+

MIKE: C++

MATT: Yeah. Low-res graphics text interface&mdash;

MIKE: He threw a spear, at this dinosaur&mdash;

MATT: He threw a rock at one, to knock the spear out of the little dinosaur's mouth.

MIKE: Ohhh. And it showed the animation of the rock falling against the, uh&mdash; across the screen.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: So this is done in the style of the original children's book, uh, that Craig Zobel, and I&mdash; myself made in 1996. Um, so these were the original&mdash; That drawing of Coach Z was done, like a couple of years later.

MATT: Yeah. I like that little, like, that little lip, the little flair on the "Z" that used to exist&mdash;

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: Because like&mdash; 'Cause he was originally going to have hair like that, didn't he?

MIKE: Yeah he had like&mdash;

MATT: On like some early drawings you did, where it has a little "Z" hair sort of.

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: I like the way he walks, there. It looks good, Mike.

MIKE: Thanks, man.

MATT: So this whole email, we got very far into this email and then completely rewrote it.

MIKE: Yeah, if you watch the, um, Making of the Hundredth Email time-lapse which is on this DVD in the Bonus Features section&mdash;

MATT: Three disc set, Strong Bad Emails DVD!

MIKE: That's right. But anyway, if you watch, you can see me making graphics if you look closely of, like, Strong&mdash; of Homestar wearing sandals.

MATT: Yeah he's got the duckshirt on, but it's like regular graphics. It's&mdash;

MIKE: It's using the regular style, yeah. It's before we decided to do&mdash; and you can see, like, in the second day of the time-lapse, Matt's looking&mdash; like writing, and is pretty much rewriting the whole thing.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: Um, there was lots of stuff about his duckshirt, like, originally, Marzipan gives him his star shirt.

MATT: Right. Er, we kinda overdid the origin of things.

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: Like, we were explaining&mdash;

MIKE: Because Strong Bad had a star shirt on, too, and he tore it off because he didn't want to wear one&mdash;

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: &mdash;because Homestar had one too&mdash;

MATT: And he had never put a shirt on since then.

MIKE: And that was why&mdash; And that was why Strong Bad never wore a shirt again.

MATT: {laughs} That's a good Marzipan mouth. {imitating Strong Bad} Augh!

MIKE: Do it, Strong Bad, do it!

MATT: Um...

MIKE: That little silhouette&mdash; The yellow silhouetted thing is a staple of the Dennis the Menace comics.

MATT: {laughs} That's right!

MIKE: Usually the third frame is the yellow silhouette.

MATT: {laughs} It's true.

MIKE: I love that.

MATT: And so in the Easter egg, the fishsticks do sort of explain why the King of Town is&mdash; is fat&mdash;

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: &mdash;and got this lifestyle.

MIKE: Look at that old Bubs! Lookin' good!

MATT: That's of course, uh, on the left side is, uh, Mr. Bland&mdash;

MIKE: &mdash;doing cartwheels. Then on the right is Senor&mdash; Se&ntilde;or.

MATT: Se&ntilde;or Havin' A Little Trouble is his full name. Now Strong Mad is great. And Strong Sad too, is&mdash; got little stubs for arms. I like how this is like&mdash; Homestar's so excited. {Mike laughs} He's sat down and is like crowded around the campfire. We should make that.

MIKE: Yeah. So, are we gonna do the commentary of him saying "email" a hundred times?

MATT: Yeah, we should talk over it anyway.

MIKE: Yeah, what should we talk about? Maybe um...

MATT: Anything else about this email? This hundredth email? It was kind of a&mdash;

MIKE: It took three days to make&mdash;

MATT: Yeah, it was defin&mdash;

MIKE: Took a long time to make.

MATT: It's one of the longest ones. One of the biggest file size-wise.

MIKE: Um&mdash;

MATT: What did w&mdash; Oh, we had just met for the first time Jonathan Howe, the guy that programs all our games for us. We had just met him in person for the first time, and came down to visit, and then he left on... Monday morning? Or was it Sunday?

MIKE: Yeah, I think Monday morning.

MATT: Oh, no no, he left Sunday morning and then we started working&mdash;

MIKE: This was Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and we put it up on Tuesday night.

MATT: But we didn't decide to make the hundredth email, we had been kind of putting it off because we knew we had to make it a big deal. And so we didn't do it until, like, uh, we decided it that day, basically, right? On that Sunday, that we were like, "Ah, let's just do it," like we were going to do some other update or do&mdash; or try and put it off, and we just decided to pull the trigger on it or we'd always be putting it off.

MIKE: There. We're done.

{Pause}

MATT: Lemonade Stand.

<blockquote>You're invited to<br>
a Meatless Luau!<br>
<br>
featuring:<br>
Ancient Hawaiian Poetry<br>
read by Strong Sad<br>
accompanied by<br>
Marzipan on her Ukulele<br>
<small>(pronounced oo-koo-lay-lay)</small><br>
When: <u>TODAY</u> Where: <u>MARZIPAN'S</u></blockquote>

{Eventually the card spins out, revealing a banner reading "Aloha!" Marzipan is walking to some cooking tofu. Homestar is standing behind the gazebo, facing away from the viewer.}

MARZIPAN: Oo-koo-lay-lay. Oo-koo-lay-lay. Mm! Lookin' pretty good. Homestar, come up here right now and watch the tofu, please.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Uhhh... Hang on. I'm um... doing... something.

MARZIPAN: Chop-chop! Everyone's gonna be here any minute.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Uh, Marzipan, I hate to tell you this, but... I don't think anyone's coming to your party. I think they're all going to Strong Bad's Marshmallow Roast!!

{The invitation to Strong Bad's Marshmallow Roast spins onto screen as the old CBS Special music plays. It reads:}

<blockquote>Your invited to a<br>
Marshmallow Roast<br>
<br>
when: same day as marzipan's stupid luau<br>
<br>
where: my backyard<br>
<br>
time: same time as marzipan's stupid luau<br>
</blockquote>

MARZIPAN: What?! He scheduled something on the same day as the luau?

{scene transition to Strong Bad, Strong Mad, and The Cheat.}

STRONG BAD: Oh man you guys, this party's gonna be crazy-go-nuts! Check it out! I've got the marshmallows {spreads his hand over said marshmallows}, I've got all the latest releases from the artists of today {cut to boombox playing Poot-Slap}, and I've carefully filled out everybody's name tags. {close up of picnic table filled with name tags that all say "Hello, my name is Crap for Brains"} Oh, crap!! I forgot the wood! Come on guys, I know where we can hork some.

{Scene cuts to Marzipan's backyard}

MARZIPAN: Oo-koo-lay-lay. Oo-koo-l {Homestar interrupts with a sigh and comes over but Marzipan continues to sing} ay-lay.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: I've gotta stop drinkin' so much melonade. I think I have a serious problem.

MARZIPAN: You're gonna have a problem if you don't monitor this tofu. I have to tune my oo-koo-lay-lay.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Okay. {singing to himself} A doo doo, a doo doo doo, a doot doo doo doo. A bab-dib do doo doo—

{In the distance, Strong Bad, Strong Mad and The Cheat poke their heads onto the screen from the left, looking at the gazebo. The camera pans right to remove them from the shot, and Strong Sad is revealed standing on the other side of the fire.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh! Strong Sad! How long have you been standing there?

STRONG SAD: Oh, about 20 minutes.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Uh, okay. {takes a step away} That's weird.

{scene transition to Strong Bad's backyard. Poot Slap is playing in the background. Everybody is wearing their "Crap for Brains" name tag.}

STRONG BAD: {walking past the Poopsmith, Bubs and Coach Z) Ah, Crap for Brains, glad to see you could make it! Oh, Crap for Brains, you lookin' good! Now, let's get this freakin' party started! {Lights a match} We'll just get this fire started here. With a little match, and a little fire. {holds match up to firewood, but it doesn't light} And this should probably be working already. Um, and I don't know why this isn't working.

{Cut to Marzipan's gazebo where Strong Sad is holding a book that says "Polynesian Prose."}

STRONG SAD: Kallo koo-koo lay kua ka loo {cut to the tofu where Homestar is standing. Strong Sad's poetry can be heard in the background.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {His head keeps drooping down, then coming back up, resisting the urge to fall asleep.} Zzzzz... Huh! Soooo... Zzzzz... Huh! Boooooooooring.

{Cut to Strong Bad's roast, where eleven burnt matches are sitting on the ground. Strong Bad is kneeling down next to the stack of firewood with a lit match}

STRONG BAD: {frustrated} UUUUUGH! {grumbling} Stupid matches, freakin' light the fire!

STRONG MAD: {rubs belly} UUUUUUG. HUNGRY!

BUBS: I'm with Strong Mad! I feel about as hungry as The King of Town on a Saturday!

STRONG BAD: I'm trying! I'm trying! Gtch! {taunting voice} Hello, my name is piece of wood and I don't want to catch fire. Hello, my name is little match, and I don't want to make a fire! {completely aggravated} HELLOOOO! MY NAME IS FIRE, AND I'M NOT COMING TO YOUR STUPID PARTY!!!!!

{Strong Bad knocks a log at the viewer. Homestar then walks onto the scene.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: I'm coming to your stupid party.

POM POM: {bubbles}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh man, Pom Pom! I love Marzipan and everything, but it was terrible!

POM POM: {bubbles}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: No, I don't think she'll notice I'm gone.

{cut to Marzipan's gazebo, where Marzipan is playing her ukelele and Strong Sad is reading poetry. Next to the tofu cooking is another piece of tofu, with Homestar's head drawn on it. It is on top of a piece of tofu which has Homestar's body drawn on it. They are being held up by two long sticks. The tofu cooking catches fire.}

{cut back to Strong Bad's roast. Strong Bad is trying yet again, and unsuccessfully, to make a fire.}

COACH Z: What kind of wood you usin' there, Strong Bad? 'Cause ya know, I know a guy who—

STRONG BAD: I don't know man, I stole this stuff from Marzipan's backyard.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Uh-oh. You didn't get it from behind the gazebo, did you?

STRONG BAD: Yeah, why?

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Well, it all started when I decided to drink 32 glasses of melonade...

BUBS: Look! There's a fire over there!

{suddenly, smoke arises from somewhere, then everyone looks at each other and runs, except for Strong Bad.}

STRONG BAD: Aaah, come back, you guys, things were just about to start getting crazy-go-nuts!

{Everyone runs to the source of the fire - which happens to be Marzipan's still-flaming tofu. They roast their marshmallows over it.}

MARZIPAN: Look, Strong Sad, everybody's here!

STRONG SAD: Oh, how glorious.

MARZIPAN: Hey, everybody, how's the tofu? {Cut to Coach Z, Pom Pom, and Bubs chewing on marshmallows, then back to Marzipan} Everyone loves tofu!

{Musical sting, then transition to Strong Bad's place, where he has finally given up and is trying to roast a marshmallow over a lit match. Scattered bags of unopened marshmallows are sitting on the ground.}

STRONG BAD: Hey, you guys, come back! I think I got it all figured out now! Oh, man! What am I supposed to do with all these leftover marshmallows? I bought, like, four hundred pounds!

THE KING OF TOWN: {walking by, humming, then looks at Strong Bad.} Oh, excuse me, but did I hear you say... leftovers?

{close up of a nametag reading "the end for brains"}

{transition to Marzipan's backyard, where Marzipan is talking to the tofu model of Homestar. There is a flame on his "head".}

MARZIPAN: Thanks for helping me with my party today, Homestar. I think it was a really big success! {she nuzzles him} You've been really nice to me the last few minutes! {Tofu Homestar's "head" falls off. Blackout, record scratch} Put your head back on this instant!

Fun Facts
Explanations
*A luau is a type of feast prominent in Hawaiian culture. It consists primarily of traditional Polynesian song and dance and the eating of an ethnic dish called poi, as well as roasting pork and salmon over an open rotisserie. Since Marzipan is a vegetarian, however, she instead roasts a slab of tofu.
*An ukulele (often spelled "ukelele" in Great Britain) is a small, 4-stringed, guitarlike instrument that originated in Hawaii in the 1880s. English-speakers usually pronounce it "yoo-koo-lay-lee", but Marzipan's pronunciation ("oo-koo-lay-lay") is more authentic.

Trivia
*Among the phrases of "Polynesian Prose" that Strong Sad recites are "Kahlua and Creme", an alcoholic drink; and "Meka Leka Hi Meka Heiny Ho", which were Jambi's magic words on the TV show Pee-wee's Playhouse.
*This is the first time Strong Bad uses the term 'crazy-go-nuts', something which will eventually evolve into Crazy Go Nuts University.
*This is the first time Missy Palmer has been credited as a writer.

Remarks
*Strong Bad's invitation says "Your invited", misspelling "you're". This is ironic since Strong Bad has a penchant for scoffing at spelling and grammar mistakes.
**Strong Bad even sings a song about the differences of the two words in local news.
*When you first see Strong Sad standing next to the fire, in the background, you see the lights across the fence somehow seem to just stop from where scene view would have ended.
*Interestingly, Strong Bad's Ghetto Blastro displays moving bars even when it isn't playing.
*The invitation to the Luau says that Strong Sad will be reading "Ancient Hawaiian Poetry", yet his book says "Polynesian Prose".
*Strong Mad's logo on his chest is slightly different from the previous toon, A Jorb Well Done.
*This is another instance of foreign words being mispronounced.
*Strong Bad appears to strike the match on his thumb.
*The design of Homestar in this cartoon is from an earlier design, when in a previous toon, A Jorb Well Done, his design is the current.
**Commentary for Jorb reveals the animation was eventually updated.

Goofs
*The tofu over Marzipan's fire turns, but the stick stuck through it does not.
*The wheels on the tape do not turn in Strong Bad's Ghetto Blastro.
*When we see Strong Sad for the first time, the lights on the fence stop in midair.
*When Coach Z turns his head, his "Crap for brains" name tag is reversed.
*In the first scene, when we first see the back of Homestar, his head is slightly off of his body.
*When Strong Bad, Strong Mad, and The Cheat steal Marzipan's wood, The Cheat appears to be floating above Strong Mad's foot.

Inside References
*The tune Marzipan is playing on the ukelele is the song "Thoughts on a Bird" from the game Audition With Marzipan.

Real-World References
*The CBS Special music heard when the invitation to Strong Bad's Marshmallow Roast is shown is a reference to the logo and music that CBS used to preface their specials. The actual opening, used from 1973 to the late 1980's, is viewable here. This was used earlier in A Holiday Greeting.
*The sound effect of everybody running is a generic bongo sound effect used in old Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

Fast Forward
*The phrase "Things were just about to start getting crazy-go-nuts!" would be used again in personal favorites and on Main Page 22.
*Likewise, "Crap for brains" would later be seen in various forms, such as "Carp for brains" in personal favorites; "crap for crap" in The House That Gave Sucky Treats; and "brain for brains" in invisibility.

DVD Version
*The DVD version features creators' commentary. To access it, switch your DVD player's audio language selection while watching.
*Unlike A Holiday Greeting and The Best Decemberween Ever, the CBS Special Presentation theme is present on both audio tracks, not just the commentary.
*The Luau Main Page was removed due to technical limitations.
Commentary Transcript
(Commentary by: Matt Chapman, Mike Chapman)

MATT: Mike, you made this cartoon all by yourself.

MIKE: This was when you lived in New York, Matt. You emailed me all the voices, the dialogue.

MATT: I used to turn them into MP3 format so I could send more of them in each email. WAV files were too big.

MIKE: Yeah. Um, so what about this one?

MATT: You made—didn’t you write it with—

MIKE: Oh, watch this little lens flare coming up… I got this from Legend of Zelda…

MATT: Majora’s Mask?

MIKE: Majora’s Mask that has that when you look up at the sun. So I copied it.

MATT: Good job.

MIKE: And there’s the famous 3D rotating tofu!

MATT: I remember being blown away when I first saw the clip of this.

MIKE: It’s all, of course, fake 3D. It’s pretty… the edges are pretty lame. But it still holds up okay, five years later.

MATT: Yeah, it wouldn’t take much to make it look really slick.

MIKE: Yeah. The fire on the other hand, with the tiki torches…

MATT: Look GREAT.

MIKE: …Are pretty bad.

MATT: {imitating Marzipan} “The Luau?” I like how she says Luau. That reminds me of Charlie Brown in the Charlie Brown Christmas cartoon, when he’s like “We have to get on with our plaaay!”

MIKE: Play?

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: {referring to the Ghetto-Blastro} A little 3-Dee…

MATT: Listening to 3-Dee in there.

MIKE: The members of 3-Dee are… Nehi, Yoo-Hoo, and Sundrop.

MATT: Ahh.

MIKE: 3-Dee stands for “Three Drinks”. Their names are drinks.

MATT: Oh. Got it. {As Homestar comes from behind the gazebo} What were you doing back there, Homestar Runner?

MIKE: He must have been drinking Melonades.

MATT: Oh, okay.

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: I get it now.

MIKE: I think this cartoon—when, um—

MATT: Whoa! Did you see how quickly Marzipan bolted out of the scene?

MIKE: {Laughs} She got out of there! I was gonna say we were realizing that the crackling fire comes and goes in the scenes of this cartoon.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: As we were watching it for the DVD we were wondering if things were messed up, but no, in the original cartoon, some scenes have a crackling fire and some don’t. {Laughs} Look at that walk for Strong Bad!

MATT: With the really slow—

MIKE: With the bent elbows?

MATT: His arms are… very long. {Pause} Poot Slap, Poot Slap, Dansk! What's that staunch?

MIKE: Those are the lyrics to the 3-Dee song.

MATT: {referring to a swift scene transition} Ooh. A little zipper-zipperoo.

MIKE: And Strong Sad says some Jambi the Genie coming up here.

MATT: Yeah.

MIKE: Or did he already say that?

MATT: No, that’s later.

MIKE: Oh, see, now crackling fire.

MATT: He mentions Kahlua and Crème I think at one point too. Didn’t you write this with Melissa? You and Melissa kind of wrote this together?

MIKE: Yeah, yeah.

MATT: I like the song – the theme song for this is nice. It made me… it made me want to move back down to Atlanta, I remember, when I first heard it.

MIKE: {Laughs} The theme song?

MATT: Yeah. It made me sad that I wasn’t there to make it with you.

{Mike laughs}

MATT: {Laughs as Strong Mad rubs his belly in hunger} Yeah? Big guy?

MIKE: Is this Strong Mad’s—

MATT: Did you see his mouth barely move? I don’t think it closed ever!

MIKE: Did Strong Mad ever say anything before that? Is that his first line?

MATT: {Laughs} Maybe! Or no, “I AM STRONG BAD! I AM STILL STRONG BA—” From Jumping Jack—

MIKE: Oh, from Jumping Jack, okay. Oh watch this, when a log comes flying at the camera.

MATT: OOH! Wow…

MIKE: Mondo.

MATT: I think the… I think the clouds in the background stopped moving at a point during that last scene too—

{Mike laughs}

MATT: —They just got to a point where, “Eh, we’re good here.” {Pause until we see the Tofu Homestar} That’s a good—a good disguise, Homestar Runner.

MIKE: That smoke is pretty weak too.

MATT: {Laughs} It’s all right—it’s made of a bunch of balls. {Pause} I think Coach Z there is telling him that he knows a guy up in Pawkeegan who’d do wonders with wood or—I can’t remember what the full quote was. {As we see the smoke through over the trees} That’s some deep, lush forests…

MIKE: Yeah, we don’t see those very much.

MATT: No you don’t.

MIKE: Have to run through the woods to get to Marzipan’s back yard.

MATT: {Imitating Strong Bad after he says, “Things were just about to start getting crazy-go-nuts!”} My voice was about to start getting really echo-y at this part!

MIKE: {Laughs} The old generic, uh—

MATT: —Cartoon—

MIKE: Scooby Doo-Flintstones-run-sound.

{Long pause}

MATT: What else do you have to say, Mike?

MIKE: Well…

MATT: There’s Coach Z chewing the—and Pom Pom chewing with their invisible mouths… Good job, Strong Bad.

MIKE: I think Strong Bad got way bigger—before he was crouched next to that pile of logs, and they seemed pretty…

MATT: Pretty tiny?

MIKE: Yeah.

MATT: {In tune with the last keyboard note} Taaa.

{The cartoon seems to be over until we see another scene with Marzipan and Tofu Homestar}

MIKE: Oh, here’s where we’re… we’re still goin’ here.

MATT: I remember later on we added—and it’s a version we never put up—but her head catches on fire…

MIKE: Really?

MATT: …too, during that part.

This is a bit obscure, but at the end of this cartoon, Sickly Sam says, "I've finally found the love of a lifetime." which could be in reference to a song of the same name from the hard rock band Firehouse (since the Brothers Chaps seem very knowledgable about hard rock bands from that era).
