I think the similarities are strong: Charlton Heston was the long-time and very prolific president of and spokesman for the NRA, and they're quite unique in that there are no other gun associations or corresponding celebrity spokespeople that come near to the fame of the two. In addition, Heston and the NRA faced well-known opposition, for example from [[Wikipedia:Michael Moore|Michael Moore]] in ''[[Wikipedia:Bowling for Columbine|Bowling for Columbine]]''. I think it would extremely difficult for TBC to create a celebrity spokesman for a gun organization and have Marzipan be protesting it without thinking of Heston and the NRA. There's a bit of ambiguity in the toon... it's unclear (at least to me) whether Marzipan is protesting ''against'' the PFP, and Crack Stuntman wants her to stop, or whether she protests ''for'' the PFP, and Crack Stuntman feels they don't need or want her support... the words "stop protesting ''in'' our rallies" suggests the latter to me, but the former makes more sense... If you search for "ass" + "own congressman" (or "butt" + "own congressman") on the Google groups archive, you'll find that the first occurrence of this joke on newsgroups is 3 days after this Simpsons episode aired (it aired November 5th 1995). If you search for the zip code version of the joke, you'll find much earlier mentions dating back to 1992. I should point out that the rope's ''center of mass'' should be at ten feet. The rope is therefore 20 feet long (assuming uniform density). Also, by counting ten periods while looking at my clock, the rope swings every 3.7 seconds, not 3.4 seconds which means it's 22 feet long if you trust some extra significant figures. Hooray for my first contribution!

The elephant man hasn't ever really seemed obscure to me... Maybe to other people though. But all the same, in those two different contexts, it doesn't seem like an inside joke to me. After several reviews, all I can hear now is "I'm a ''hangable'' man." I mean, after all, Homsar is hanging from something. It is important to note I'm not suggesting that he's implying he's being lynched - it's more in the spirit of the lame fill-in-the-blanks game "Hangman." I think it's a very bad idea to set the precedent that very very small color differences are somehow goofs worth noting. I'm sure if we looked hard enough, we could find numerous "goofs" of that sort in every single cartoon. :I dunno. This one I find kinda interesting. TBC have been making toons for a while now. They're not what you would call novices. They have the tools and the talent to get it right at this stage of the game. It's not like those old ''Scooby-Doo'' cartoons. You know, where the trap door stands out because it's painted in a slightly different color of blue from the rest of the floor. In that case, the door and the floor were created using two completely different means, so it was almost impossible to get right. In the case of this toon, however, getting the color right should just have been a matter of selecting the eyedropper tool and choosing the background. The background was hand painted on some paper or cardboard, then, celluloids with painted characters were overlaid on top of it and animated. The background was not animated, except for panning and zooming. The paint used on cells was different and had different reflectivity index than the background. The background also had more texture and shadowing than the animated parts on cells, which were painted with uniform, unshaded colors. So that made the traps on walls and the floor very obvious. I should point out that the rope's ''center of mass'' should be at ten feet. The rope is therefore 20 feet long (assuming uniform density). Also, by counting ten periods while looking at my clock, the rope swings every 3.7 seconds, not 3.4 seconds which means it's 22 feet long if you trust some extra significant figures. Hooray for my first contribution!

I think it's a very bad idea to set the precedent that very very small color differences are somehow goofs worth noting. I'm sure if we looked hard enough, we could find numerous "goofs" of that sort in every single cartoon. They have the tools and the talent to get it right at this stage of the game. It's not like those old ''Scooby-Doo'' cartoons. In that case, the door and the floor were created using two completely different means, so it was almost impossible to get right.
