::::::This is a really late reply, but I gotta clarify what the press pass was. It's not a snazzy little card or something, it's really hard to describe, but it's not scannable. It's sort of a wallet type thing, with a clear pocket on it, and your name and the news place you're fron printed on plain paper, and stuck inside. It's also got a string for you to wear it around your neck. But since this is sort of a special case, we decided on giving it a prominent display on the talk page, which you just did. ==The Presentation==

===Introductions - 3:45 p.m.===

While booting up their laptop, one could glimpse "3726 unread emails" on Matt's user profile. After setting up and introducing themselves, they announced that they had each brought a [[Wikipedia:Nintendo DS|Nintendo DS]], and had started a [[Wikipedia:PictoChat|PictoChat]] which they would carry on intermittently throughout the presentation. Before long two members of the audience had joined the conversation. Matt then showed what he had been working on during the keynote address: A humorous sketch of Mike and two gorillas. After explaining that they were Flash animators for their website, [[Homestar Runner (flash cartoon)|Homestarrunner.com]], they showed a sample of their work: [[virus]].

===Early History - 3:50 p.m.===

First they began with the site history, showing the early progression of the site.
*Stills from the [[Original Book]], and related the history of making the book during the Olympics of August 1996.
*A clip from the next thing they had made, the toon [[Super NES]] using [[Wikipedia:Mario Paint|Mario Paint]] on the SNES system.
*A clip of a toon they made to teach themselves Flash: [[Marshmallow's Last Stand]]. They froze this clip and pointed out various animation problems, such as the jagged edges and inconsistent colors.
*A clip from the beginning of [[The Luau]]; from 2001. Mike commented on stealing the lens flare idea from ''[[Wikipedia:The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask]]'', and pointed out the bottom edge of the cube of Tofu disappearing early.
*In late 2001 they started the [[Strong Bad Emails]], along with the original intention of replying to every email in character, and animating a select email each week. That plan was quickly abandoned, but they did decide to start making a Strong Bad Email weekly around January 2002. They then showed a favorite clip of theirs, the love song from [[montage]]. They generally consider early 2002 being the point where their animation reached a "style plateau".

===Samples of Styles - 3:55 p.m.===

They went on to relate how the website is kept creatively interesting, through various animation styles. They showed stills from the different styles, namely:
*[[Teen Girl Squad]] - A badly drawn comic book about four teenage girls.
*[[The Cheat Commandos]] - A play on [[Wikipedia:G.I. Joe|G.I. Joe]] and [[Wikipedia:Transformers|Transformers]], with [[Wikipedia:Adobe Photoshop|Photoshopped]], grainy backgrounds and hairline strokes around the characters.
*[[20X6]] - The anime version of [[Strong Bad]], akin to a [[Wikipedia:Speed Racer|Speed Racer]] or [[Wikipedia:Robotech|Robotech]] style.
*[[Old-Timey]] - Their earliest alternate style, which was originally intended to make a fake mythology for the site. This was described as a spoof of [[Wikipedia:Steamboat Willie|Steamboat Willie]], from 1933.
*[[Saddy Dumpington]] - A character [[Strong Sad]] made up, drawn in a watercolor style.
Because they are self-employed and thus don't answer to a boss, creatively they are able to do really whatever they want, such as a "bad heavy metal song"; they can do it and call it Homestar Runner.

===More History, The Store, and Related Topics - 4:00 p.m.===

They then returned to their history of the website, starting in 2001.
*In 2001 they began selling [[Store T-Shirts|T-shirts]].
*In August of 2003 Matt quit his job at EarthLink, and began working on the site full time. Earlier Matt had gone on the EarthLink website, and found a page that still featured many of his images he had made for the company, such as a calculator and a wad of money.
They also mentioned the [[Store]], and how they sell products such as CDs, DVDs, Figurines and T-shirts. They try to keep the store a separate entity, without ramming it down visitors' throats. They recalled, with distaste, sites that would play an ad to buy some crap, and another ad after that would link you directly to the store. Their method of building their business ended up building a fan base first out of their own pocket, and then introducing merchandise, which they admit isn't traditionally a good business model. They mentioned that they now live in different houses, with wives, instead of in their parents' basement, as some may believe. They showed a still from the [[Pulse Interview - May 2004|2004 Pulse Interview]]; which was them pixilated wearing fake mustaches, posing as the [[Videlectrix]] programmers. They also mentioned that they still do all of their animation in Flash 5, and began relating the process of creating a cartoon.

===Pre-animation Process - 4:05 p.m.===

After being momentarily distracted by the continuing Nintendo DS chatroom, they began relating the process of creating a cartoon ("which will just piss you off even more that this is what we do for a living"). When they first started creating weekly cartoons they both still had full time jobs, and therefore created the entire cartoons sometimes after watching the Falcons game in its entirety at 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Nowadays a typical four minute cartoon takes the entire week, with animation taking place during the last three or four days.
*Mondays or Tuesdays they begin looking through submitted Strong Bad emails; it sometimes takes four or five hours to find a usable email. They also showcased 5 different groups of emails that would most likely not be answered:

**What do you look like without your mask?
**What do your [[Parents|parents]] look like?
**Redoing a favorite email, usually redrawing a [[dragon]].
**Referencing current events. In this case they showcased emails concerning the Olympics, but they also mentioned emails regarding [[Wikipedia:Spider-Man (film)|Spider-Man]], [[Wikipedia:The Matrix series|The Matrix]], and [[Wikipedia:The Lord of the Rings|The Lord of the Rings]] were common during their respective releases.
*They then demonstrated their brainstorming process using two small foam balls. Matt laid on the floor and threw a half-size basketball up in the air, suggesting, "So Strong Bad's going to be in like a [[Cardboard Boxes|box]], a cardboard box. That The Cheat peed in." Mike agreed with him throughout this ("Okay, okay, I like it"), then threw his foam baseball at him. They also mentioned that they have been in their office for around two years, and vacuumed it for the first time three weeks ago, so laying on the floor is much nicer now.
*In addition to brainstorming, they also wander around their neighborhood (and the depressing adult diaper and hearing aid stores found in the strip mall their offices are in) searching for inspiration.
*After they have an idea of what the cartoon will be about, they usually write separately. After their writing is done they will compare their scripts, and merge them using the best ideas. According to Mike, his writing is usually better. They once again referred to their continuing Nintendo DS conversation, saying that one person said they were giving "too much info".
*Next is recording the sound, which is done using a fairly soundproof sound room and an audio mobile USB pre-amp with an XLR mic running into it. It used to be Matt just sitting at the computer holding an old Super H film microphone or something, never a system mic. This resulted in numerous background noises, such as Matt's hand moving around, the hum of the computer fan, or Mike doing dishes in the background. In the later days Matt draped a blanket over his head and the mike to minimize background noises.

===Animation Process - 4:10 pm===

Matt mentioned a little intro cartoon that they made for "the Festival"; Mike corrected that it was a convention (festivals are more fun). They showed a still of the end of the intro toon, and explained Easter eggs, and how they are the extent of the action script that they use. According to Matt: "So we made a little intro, so anyways we're gonna put on the site, uh, later on this week..." To date, the intro still has not materialized. Then they began to demonstrate the animation process, by adding an [[Easter eggs|Easter egg]] to the end of the finished toon.
*The Easter egg is a scene of Homestar Runner and Strong Bad crouched down behind a podium labeled "Podium Excellens". Homestar says to Strong Bad "Strong Bad, I think the elevator's broke."
*[[Image:Flashforward Desktop.JPG|thumb|Matt Chapman's Desktop]]They began by recording the line using the old method of Matt wearing a blanket over his head, and speaking Homestar's line into the mic. Matt also pointed out his laptop's background, which is a screenshot of the [http://www.sq7.org/omnipedia/index.php/Deltaur Deltaur] from [[Wikipedia:Space Quest#Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter (Original: 1986/ Remake: 1991)|Spacequest 1]], another 1980's era video game.
*After revealing that he doesn't label any of his Flash layers, Mike demonstrated lip-synching the toon. Mike first mixes up Homestar and Strong Bad, then clarifies that ''Homestar's head'' is 3 frames, which gives three different facial expressions to work with. Mike would layer the sound down first, then click on various points of the audio. In Flash 5, this plays a microsecond of the audio, which gives them an indication of what mouth layer to cut and paste into that point. This is one of the reasons they continue to use Flash 5. At least MX 04 does not play a short sound from the point in the audio. They did challenge anybody to make Flash 8 look and act exactly like Flash 5, and they would gladly switch over. Lip-syncing the entire scene only took a few minutes to complete.
*They also talked about the design of the characters, and how they are easy to animate. Although they didn't originally design their characters with animating in Flash in mind, they lucked out that many of their characters don't have arms or legs, and none of their characters are overly complex. That's just how they generally draw and design.
*They also talked about the technical aspects of their animation. They have always animated at 12 frames per second, in a 550 x 400 window, because both of those options were the Flash 5 defaults.
*They also demonstrated "doinking", by making Homestar flinch at certain stresses of the sentence.

*After that first question, Mike went on to talk about something he meant to cover earlier, their drawing. They draw everything in Flash, using drawing tools and a [[Wikipedia:Wacom|Wacom tablet]]. Mike first learned with [[Wikipedia:Adobe Illustrator|Adobe Illustrator]], and by the time Flash 5 came out Mike was comfortable using program drawing tools. They generally try to always break the lines apart, which doesn't leave a rounded edge and allows you to vary the line width. Mike began to demonstrate his artistic skills by drawing something in Flash 5.

*Matt explains that early writing is always hard, sometimes throwing a baseball against a wall for hours on end with no good ideas. Then usually a walk around the "creepy depressing shopping mall" their offices are at and seeing a guy at the adult diaper store, gives them inspiration of what should happen in the toon. That initial flood of creativity is generally the most fun part of the animation process. He also mentions that not speaking for sometimes 18 hours straight with headphones on as they animate things such as the text and Strong Bad's head in a Strong Bad Email gets redundant at times, but they still enjoy it somewhat. He reiterates that the initial sparks of writing ideas are always the most fun. Sometimes in the last three hours of animating a cartoon, they will come up with something else and completely rewrite it.
*Matt also explains that there isn't a whole lot of quality control. They watch the toon a couple times, tweak small parts and cut out others, and then put it right up on the website. Generally they finish the day they should be uploading the toon.

At this point Mike takes stock of the time, and mentions another factor that adds to the time needed to create an email, the music.
*Almost every cartoon has one piece of original music, which is usually done in either [[Wikipedia:Adobe Audition|Audition]] or [[Wikipedia:GarageBand|GarageBand]], often with their Casio keyboard.
*At this point Mike finishes drawing his piece of toast, mentioning that this is usually at four in the morning when Mike finishes his graphic.
*Matt mentions that they also have puppet versions of some of their characters, which they sometimes do small skits or musical things with. They generally try to keep the videos short, put them into a tiny window, and compress them using a newer version of Flash. They try to keep their files at around one megabyte, which helps to keep their bandwidth costs consistent. They also demonstrated their compressed video files, by showing a clip of [[death metal]]: "the half hour death metal dungeon hour".
*Mike mentioned that Matt is an award winning stop motion claymation animator, from a [[1987]] international media festival in 7th grade. Matt clarified that they may have been stretching on it being international; that one kid maybe having an aunt from Canada was as international as it got.

The Brothers Chaps decided to hire them for the DVD menus, and sent them a Flash animation of what they wanted to happen.

====Can you play the cartoon you made for the Flashforward conference?====
*They agreed, and after some technical difficulties, showed the [[Flashforward Intro]] toon.
*After the toon they explained that the PowerPoint slides shown in the toon was based on Mike's old job at [http://www.decisionquest.com/ Decision Quest] (which sounds like a magical place, but really isn't), as he made pie charts and graphs, and tried to make them fun. Matt related an anecdote where Mike had to make a chart based on Lady Justice with the scales. Mike had one side of the scales hold words like "Justice: Good thing. Family"; and the other side with things like "Evil, breaking the law, etc". Apparently a lawyer really used this visual aid in his case.

====Where do you see yourself in five years?====
*They mentioned that they would like to return to [[Wikipedia:Seattle, Washington|Seattle]] eventually, or see the [[Wikipedia:Grand Canyon|Grand Canyon]]. Five years ago they would never have guessed they would be doing Homestar Runner for a living, and they explained that they don't usually look too far ahead into the future. Matt offered the insight that "Having no plan and low expectations always makes the future look brighter". They don't usually look further ahead than the following Monday, with the exception of the [[Games]] which take several months of preparation; and Homestar Runner's 10th anniversary, which was coming up in around 6 months from then, in August of 2006.
*Matt also mentioned that while doing Homestar Runner, they have met many cool people from the Flash and entertainment industries. He mentioned that they had got an email from somebody asking if they wanted to direct a commercial of some kind. He wasn't sure if it was a car lot or something, but mentioned that a local car lot would be even better. Matt has been to film school, and they've both grown up making dumb movies, so they have other ideas they might explore one day. Mike clarified that they might still be doing Homestar with other stuff mixed in in the future.

====A question about the Podcasts. - Red Toque====
*Mike explained that a few weeks ago they began a feature called [[Podstar Runner]], putting five or six Strong Bad Emails up for download to your [[Wikipedia:IPod#Fifth generation|video iPod]]. He mentioned that [[Wikipedia:Apple Computer|Apple]] linked to them, and they even went to number one download at one point. However in making the download available for the iPod, the files become way bigger, from 1 Megabyte to upwards of 10 Megabytes. Yesterday they had taken down the backlog of downloads and only make them available one at a time in order to keep their bandwidths cost steady while they figure out if there is an alternative to the high bandwidth cost.
*Matt added that being on the iPod store seems like good exposure in terms of getting new fans, but they have to first see if those people are buying T-shirts or not, and if they can justify paying that much for bandwidth. Matt was also surprised that they managed to beat [[Wikipedia:The Onion|The Onion]] and [[Wikipedia:The Ricky Gervais Show|The Ricky Gervais Show]], which he never thought they would do, and which was pretty awesome. They asked offhand if anyone had any bright ideas or free bandwidth to throw their way. An audience member called out asking if they would be around afterwards, they replied that they would if free bandwidth would be around.
*Mike related a funny story related to bandwidth. In January of 2003 the site actually [[The System is Down|shut down]] due to bandwidth issues. For three years previous they had been on [[Wikipedia:Yahoo!|Yahoo!]] shared hosting for $30 a month, and supposedly never went over their 20 [[Wikipedia:Gigabyte|gigabyte]] bandwidth limit. Eventually they realized they were doing several [[Wikipedia:Terabyte|terabytes]] of transfer, and still just being charged $30 a month. As it turned out, some people at Yahoo were fans and were just letting it slide. After their site went down, some fans contacted them and offered them bandwidth services. They shopped around, and realized these people were offering around $1 less per Gigabyte of transfer than anywhere else.

====Who are the bandwidth providers?====
*They're called [http://www.sagonet.com/ Sagonet], and they're based out of [[Wikipedia:Tampa Bay|Tampa Bay]], [[Wikipedia:Florida|Florida]]. They're a small outfit, but they can be called at 3:00 in the morning on Sunday with a problem, and they will fix it. The company bought an old Haverdeen down there, painted it green, and put a data center inside. Matt remarked that this setup goes along perfectly with The Brother's Chaps' working in a depressing shopping center.

====Why do people love your site and characters so much? - Rainbow Toque====
*Mike explained that was a hard question to answer. They mentioned several possible reasons: It's funny stuff, good quality, free, without ads, and without affiliations to other things. Matt added that they've always just tried to do what they think is funny, and what their friends think is funny. They often ask if [[Craig Zobel|Craig]] thinks it's funny, and if he does they put it on there. As it turns out, it seems the fans are all like Craig.
*There were times they would consider trying to please the fans more consciously, and they would always back off from that, since concentrating on fan demand can mess it up. They mentioned that they often get emails from the younger fans when they make the [[Old-Timey]] cartoons, not to make them anymore. They mentally respond with "well Craig likes them".
*They mentioned that they were at a local Seattle diner the other day, and on the ceiling of the booth next to them they noticed a spiral pinwheel of [[Trogdor]]'s beefy arms printed out and glued to the ceiling. Matt suggested offhand that they should have gone to a tattoo parlor and gotten tattoos of spiral Trogdor beefy arms.
*Matt also mentioned that they have a [[Weekly Fanstuff|fanstuff]] section of the website where they put up things people send to them. They originally assumed the flow of fanstuff would taper off, but they still get things from fans, which is really cool.
*Mike changed the subject to what ''isn't fun'': Having to animate the text and Strong Bad's head wiggling around at the start of the Strong Bad Email. It's all done in movie clips, which means they have to individually go into each one. The bane of their existence is sitting there for four hours at 3:00 in the morning on Sunday, making Strong Bad's head shake around.
*Matt mentioned that they actually talked to Jonathan Howe about making Flash look at and talk to a wave form, so that when his voice peaked his head would move up so that they could totally automate that part of the email and cut straight to the regular part of the animation. He didn't have any luck thus far, but Matt mentioned that would be one of their suggestions for the next Flash version. Mike mentioned sarcastically that they should look into Flex or Apollo, then realized that not many people knew what those things were. He also mentioned that he knew he was out of his league, but he didn't know just how far out of his league until the Keynote address.

====What's your favorite cartoon?====
*Mike mentioned that his favorite toon was [[kids' book]], which was fun for them to make their own kids' book, and then draw all over it. A lot of the toons he likes are the ones that were fun to make; he also mentioned he liked the death metal stop animation movie, just because they were able to make a death metal song.
*Matt mentioned that his favorite toon was [[personal favorites]], since it starts to look as though it's going to be a clip show, until Strong Bad begins making up emails that didn't happen. It created all this confusion with people emailing them about where these shown emails are, and Matt mentioned that he loved the confusion it caused. Mike chipped in that by asking "where is the email where they get drunk on soy sauce", you're missing the joke.

====Can you entertain the audience with a conversation between the characters?====
*Matt replied with a conversation between Homestar and Strong Bad:

Underneath Mike's laptop, he's got the door to his RAM opened up, and a piece of notebook paper folded up to push it into the slot, because it wouldn't work? That's the only reason Mike's crappy laptop is working, and you think I'm bad with the electronics.
*Mike explains that the day before his computer stopped working, and he was freaking out that he wouldn't have his laptop for the presentation. He eventually realized if he held the RAM, pushing it in as he booted up, it would work. So he crammed a folded up 8x10 piece of paper in there, and it works. He explained that was the kind of stuff that went on with them, and also surmised that he would keep it like that for like three months before he would get it fixed.

====Do you have any new characters coming on the horizon?====
*Mike answered that for main characters, no. Any new characters that are created such as Trogdor and Teen Girl Squad are created spur of the moment for that instance. The main core is made up of 12 main characters, and will not likely be added to. Their conscious decision was to make offshoot type things, instead of making it like [[Wikipedia:Pokémon|Pokémon]], where there's a zillion characters. Two of the main characters, [[The Poopsmith]] and [[Homsar]] were not originally main characters, but rose to become main characters early on, and they will likely never add to that.

====Do you find any international people coming to the site? - Yellow Hat====
*There are mainly English speaking fans, [[Wikipedia:Australia|Australia]], [[Wikipedia:Canada|Canada]], the [[Wikipedia:United Kingdom|UK]], and [[Wikipedia:Scandinavia|Scandinavia]] because a large majority there speak English.
*Matt mentioned that there is a SWF that somebody made which allows subtitles to easily be added to Flash. He mentioned that they have considered using this for Spanish or Korean translations, though Mike remarked he didn't remember a discussion.
*Matt also mentioned they were blown away the first time they got an email or an order from "[[Wikipedia:United Kingdom|across the pond]]", they were amazed they had even heard of them.

====Do you have a favorite character to write or record for?====
*Matt replied that he likes good old Homestar Runner (as he stroked the Puppet Homestar), as his voice is easily done consistently. He mentioned that [[Bubs]]' voice is hard to keep consistent and quite right, how he will often record five or six takes for Bubs' line, and then pick the best one, despite Mike telling him they all sound the same.
*Mike replied that he also likes Homestar for animating. He's easy to animate, since he only has three animation symbols, and this in turn makes it easier to make him expressive. Mike also has sympathy for Homestar, since the website used to be about him, but he's become sort of the underdog to Strong Bad, and is trying to get his website back any way he can.

====What has kept you from getting a big staff?====
*They explained that the staff is basically four people. The two of them who makes the cartoon, their video guy [[Ryan Sterritt|Ryan]] who does the DVDs and video encoding, and [[Karen Chapman|their sister]] who runs the store. Their biggest reason for keeping the company small is because they don't ''want'' a big staff. A few years ago they might have hired an animator, since animating for eight hours straight at a time was becoming tedious. But they decided against it, and now hiring an animator would just be weird.
*Matt noted that one of the reasons they've been able to do the site for a living is because they've kept it small, and reiterated his advice of "expectations, keep 'em down. Ankle level." The more people you bring in, business type people, they feel it gets bloated and you lose something from the site.

====How did you create the toys?====
*Again, it fell into their laps from a fan who emailed them. He had mocked up little PVC [[Store#Collectible Figurines|figurines]] of the characters, and had all the contacts in China. He flew them up to his studio in New York, showed them the figurines, some factory did pretty much all the work, and all they did was say "hey, looks great". The same thing happened with The Cheat [[Store#Kick The Cheat|plush doll]]. According to Mike, it would never have happened if they had set out to make toys. Matt offered the advice to "wait until everything falls into your lap".
*At this point, their laptop timed out and went to screensaver, which displayed the [[Homestar Runner and Strong Bad Screensaver|Strong Bad Screensaver]] for a second, until they bumped the laptop.

====How many Easter egg toons are there, that are not linked to from anywhere on the site?====
*Mike clarified what the person was referring to: [[Not the 100th Email!!!]]. He explained that going to <code>/sbemail100.html</code> was a fakeout, and would instead take you to a short toon. Since the [[:Template:updates-box|H*R.com update]] is usually on Monday, they put this toon up on the site instead, for those that would look in the url before it was linked. They released the [[flashback|100th email]] the next day. That was the only time they've made a toon that you have to get to from outside the toons; to say, "stop looking, stop goofing around, and when it's done it'll be done."
*Matt commented that he's always wanted to do a [[Wikipedia:Alternate reality game|crazy marketing campaign]] like [[Wikipedia:Haunted Apiary|the one]] they did for [[Wikipedia:Halo 2|Halo 2]] and [[Wikipedia:The Beast (game)|the one]] for [[Wikipedia:A.I. (film)|A.I.]], where there would be a network of 1000 websites, secret links, and they'd call your mobile phone, and finally he'd end up coming to your house and giving you a cookie cake.

====Was the CD you released your personal choice, or fan demand?====
*Mike explained that the [[Strong Bad Sings CD]] was their own choice, they had several bits and pieces of songs, and they wanted full, fleshed out versions of many of them. [[Y-O-U]], who were fans of Homestar Runner had emailed them, said that they had just moved to Atlanta, digged their work, and wanted to do something with them. Mike went out and saw their band, met them, and decided to collaborate with them. The collaboration worked well, in addition to being good musicians they had good ideas, and the Chaps went along with most of them. They also commented that they have since built up another collection of [[Songs]], would like to make another CD of full versions, and it was good to know that fans still wanted them.

====How does Craig get compensated?====
*Matt explained that [[Craig Zobel]] is a shareholder; he was the one that helped Mike write the [[Original Book]]. They describe him as a "billionaire gadabout", and whenever he's in town they put him to work.

====How did you come up with the name "Homestar Runner"?====
*The name Homestar Runner came from their friend Jamie, who is not very sports savvy. There was a local commercial for [[Wikipedia:Winn-Dixie|Winn-Dixie]] grocery stores, and [[LEMKE|Mark Lemke]], who was a second basemen for the Atlanta Braves at that time, endorsed the commercial. They would play a clip of Lemke doing something, and the announcer would say something like "Mark Lemke, all star second basemen for the Braves, and you can be a second basemen for savings, at Winn-Dixie". It sounded like an old-timey announcer, so their friend Jamie would make fun of that terrible ad, and say "Mark Lemke, home star runner for the braves!". Matt mentioned they liked the name "The Homestar Runner", and sort of 'filed that away'. Incidentally, Jamie doesn't get compensated since he's in a rock band, and gets "all kinds of action".

====When was the moment you knew it was time to quit the day job and do Homestar full time?====
*Mike explained that at the time he had been doing freelance work, so it was really only Matt who had to quit his job. Their [[Don Chapman|dad]] was running everything, and was doing all of the t-shirt sales, and had been hinting for at least six months prior that if they got two or three freelance jobs every few months, they would be able to live off of the sales. Matt described quitting his job as a sort of "leap off a cliff", not knowing if they would be able to do it full time. A little while later they started selling [[Store#Hooded Sweatshirts|hooded sweatshirts]], college got back in session, and sales ramped up to a point where they felt safe.
*Matt mused that he wouldn't mind going back to being a "starving artist for Homestar Runner", eating cold pizza, and all that, just for EarthLink.

===Stage 5.1 (Guide)===
Some things you should know about 1-Up are:

*He jumps and runs just like Stinkoman, but with more wild abandon. He runs somewhat slower than Stinkoman. However, he jumps much higher.
*He can't shoot. He can, however, kick, and spin kick in midair if you hold down the fire key. He can do a Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku on the ground if you hold the fire key and left/right directional key down. Hurricane kicking is vital sometimes.
*Because of his lack of arms, 1-Up takes twice as long climbing ladders as he has to do it with his teeth. You can kick left or right while climbing with the appropriate directional key and the fire key. You can speed up his ascent of ladders by having him jump from the bottom of them and then start pressing the up arrow key to climb the rest of the way.
*If 1-Up is left idle for a few seconds, he falls asleep and blows a snot bubble instead of yawning.
*Bendini Sisters have preset trigger areas, so remember where they are just in case you have to redo a level. They only happen once per life, though. The interesting thing is that they trigger before you enter their range of attack. Meaning if you progress slowly, they will strike just short of where you are.
**If you backtrack through the level, Bendini Sisters WILL REAPPEAR. The only time this actually matters is during the capsule loop near the end of 5.2, where you will be attacked by two of them when you return to the ladder after the three difficult pit jumps.
*Astromunds can be kicked in the back, but why bother?
*1-Up, being better at jumping can reach Kolkaryu, but like Stinkoman, can't destroy them.

Now moving on:

*First, plow your way across a field of Bendini Sisters. After that, make sure you kick the Chorch under the platform, but be sure he's in range. 1-Up's attack only works close up where he can reach.
*Climb up the ladder and you'll meet a Browntant. Dodge his attack and get close enough to kick him.
*Get on the moving platform. Be careful. An Astromund is coming. Since you can't attack it, just jump over it. Then be aware of the Kolkaryu coming up. Stay under it until it disappears.
*Grab the power crunch and get on the conveyor belt that looks like it came right off Stlunko. Watch out for the Old Sages. Another Astromund is coming. Look for the gap in the Old Sages and jump over it using this gap. Start spinkicking in place and let the conveyor belt guide you through the Chorch cluster.
*Before you hit the Old Sages on the wall, go down the ladder. Watch for the Jaro below.
*A Piedmont is over the ladder you need to get down. In general, flashing red lasers are bad. Wait for it to stop, then climb down.
*Watch out for the trapdoor. Just like in level 1.2, jump down when it's up, then jump onto solid ground immediatly.
*Another Bendini sister is coming. Dodge and move on.
*Uh-oh, an Uptant. Jump over his attack and kick him. Beware! He shoots out 5 shots in 5 different directions.
*Grab the well deserved capsule on the other side. Climb the ladder up. Don't go to the right just yet, it'll be explained.
**Right: there is a Browntant shooting. Don't bother. Just dodge while jumping on the trapdoors on the right times. Grab the capsule and turn back.
*Climb up the ladder and you'll meet some Chorches. Just kick 'em.
*Jump over the two Astromunds and be aware of the Downtants. Stay out of their range. (They aren't as simple as normal Kolkaryus. You need to be a little off to the side to survive).
*While you are running under the Downtants, an Astromund will run to you. Jump over him.
*Jump on the platform. Another Bendini sister will come. Stay to the left.
*Two Browntants side by side, really close together will fire. Jump at the right time(when one is flashing) and go down the ladder.
*Grab the capsule resting on the ladder. Jump onto the conveyor belt and keep running. It faces left to a pit.
*There is a Piedmont. Jump off the first conveyor when he is off and proceed.
*Keep passing the conveyors. Be carful of a Downtant above you. Stay out of the way. Watch out for the Jaro under the Downtant.
*Jump to the next conveyor and jump the Astromund. Watch for the Bendini Sister near the ladder.
*When you climb down, you will meet 3 Chorches. Either kick the crap out of them or jump to the right off the ladder.
*Watch for two more Bendini Sisters as you get to the flag.
*1-Up will turn to gold as you finish the level!

**Another way is to stand there on the right side, the bullets pass through you. After each shot, you can jump and hold up and the attack button and the Downtant you are attacking will be damaged. Do that once more and it will die. If you have a good timing you can jump AT THE RIGHT TIME to kill it before it shoots again, but it is risky due to its temporary invulnerability.
** If you get hurt on the way up the ladders you can jump off at the left for a capsule. Since you have to go back up the ladders, after getting the capsule, it makes sense to attack the Downtants so as to avoid risking injury after restoring your health.
* As soon as you reach the top of the ladders, walk off of the platform to the right ('''do not jump!''') As long as you keep pushing right until you reach the ground, you will avoid all of the spikes.
* After running right, jump on to the first conveyor belt, wait for the Uptant to attack, jump to the next conveyor belt, and quickly jump to the standing platform.
** If you go up (which is easier and less risky), jump again and climb the ladder on the right, and jump to the moving platform between the Uptant's fire.
** Jump up to the conveyor belts and start traveling to the left. Beware of the three Astromunds that come at you! Just jump over them and get to the next platform.
** You can get across the moving platforms more quickly if you jump across them. The backwards traction doesn't have any effect while you aren't touching them, including while you are jumping over them.
** On that platform, there will be a Chorch waiting for you. Kick it and jump down the ladder.
***It's much easier to jump off the right side of the platform, you can easily clear the Piedmonts and Kolkaryu.
***If you feel like taking on the traps, hit jump while on the ladder to drop straight down.
* Move to the Piedmont, but move back quickly to avoid the Kolkaryu.
* Go between the Piedmonts and jump to avoid the Kolkaryu (there may be other ways to avoid him.)
* Take the capsule; you can't come back and get it later.
* If you go on the top platform:
** Avoid the Bendini Sister and the Kolkaryu when crossing the next platform.
** On the moving platform, jump over the spike and avoid the Piedmont's attack.
** Jump off.
* If you take the lower middle platform:
** Dodge the Bendini Sister.
** Back up when the Astromund attacks.
** Dodge the Kolkaryu (not his attacks) and don't stay a little to its left (that's where it leaves).
** Jump over the Old Sage and take the capsule hidden behind it.
* If you take the bottom platform:
** Dodge the Bendini Sister, Piedmont, and Kolkaryu's attacks.
*** There's a capsule on the end of the second platform hidden behind the small platform. Get it on the way down.
* An easy way to pass the 4-platform section is to start on the top one, and then instead of jumping over the spike, just walk in front of the preceding conveyor belt to drop to the lower level - no spike!
** You can also jump up to the second level platforms, run right, and then jump up to the third level once you're to the right of the Browntant, but with plenty of time to clear the Astromund. You can also safely destroy the Browntant from behind, if you like.
* Dodge the Downtant's attacks and the Bendini Sisters. Jump over the pit.
* Dodge the Downtants' attacks and the Bendini Sisters, again. Jump over the pit.
* Run into the center and avoid the Kolkaryu's shots while moving to dodge the Downtants' bullets.
* Jump on the trapdoor and '''quickly''' jump off and onto the platform with the ladder. The next few parts are almost impossible.
* Walk over in the middle of the platform so you won't get hurt by the Downtant firing away. Two Bendini Sisters will attack, dodge them.
** If you go on the moving platform, get a nice big headache medicine. You probably need it. Don't go on the other side, unless you are up for a huge time waster; you can't reach the ladder.
* Climb the ladder, but be aware of the Downtant. This is hard. A best bet is to jump and climb. Then, in the middle of the ladder, you will be attacked by an Uptant and a Downtant. Grrrm!
* Kill the Uptant (and the Downtant if you want to; however, you will probably take damage). In between the Piedmonts is another power crunch. Grab it, but be very careful.
* Don't go down; this is where the big time waster is. Go up.
* Be careful as you jump the first two platforms. There are Old Sages on the end. The rest don't, so remember to breathe, and use the force.
* Keep going down the stairs, but there will be an Uptant and a Downtant on one platform. Get away!
* When you are on the stair to the right of the two 'Tants, the rest of the stairs will turn left. Jump off to the right and you will land on solid ground.
* Jump the Astromund. If you need energy, go up and around the flag and grab the final capsule. Then Nebulon arrives.

* If you die while fighting Nebulon, you can briefly hold right when respawning and land on the upper-left platform to begin the boss fight.
**This also works at the beginning of the fight.
* Man, that's one big green sucker. Nebulon constantly walks back and forth, which will really get irritating sometimes. Occasionally, he will open his mouth and let off a bunch of ouchy orange balls.
* There are 4 moving platforms, the better to hit him with.
* Anyway, as you may have guessed by the cutscene, his weak spot is his eyes. Each eye takes four hits, and you will win after they are both out of commission.
* After every kick landed on an eye, he uses his mouth to spray a powerful jet of air, forcing you back to the extreme left in case you were thinking of landing another shot right after he stops flashing. You can slowly run against the current, but if you get pushed to the leftmost position onscreen, you can't escape that position until he stops. You can however hit the top eyeball from the highest platform and keep running against the current and hit Nebulons lowest eye.
* Try taking on the top eyeball first, as it may get too hard to reach it after beating the lower eye because every time he sprays balls at you, the total amount of balls fired per attack is the number you have hit Nebulon plus one. You can hit the lower eye without jumping from a platform, but you need to get on a platform to get the upper eye (in which time you will be assaulted by orange balls). Nebulon also starts to dance back and forth faster after every shot.
* Taking the bottom platform to the upper-left platform when Nebulon is on the right side of the screen appears to be the safest. You can jump-kick the top eye from that platform.
* Because you have to be close enough to hit his eyeball physically, be careful of bumping into Nebulon, which is not good for your health. Also, for the most part, you want to be attacking when he isn't shooting you. Keep some room between you and Nebulon during his attacks to dodge his shots.

:I don't think it's really a chord at all. "Demonished 10th" is meaningless jargon. A diminished 9th interval is enharmonically equivalent to a perfect octave, and I doubt you'd ever see that phrase used often in music, if ever. Additionally, I doubt you would get anything meaningful out of the chord shown in the illustration.

After looking at your corrections, and your comments, I'd like to add the following observation:
In the Easter Eggs section that talks about the chord, there is a note that reads: "The chord requires eleven fingers. Talk about a difficult chord!" I don't know where this information came from, but given that a ''demonished 10th'' doesn't exist, there is likely no merit to this line.

Also, I beleive that the word ''demonished'' is a play on the words ''demon'' and ''diminished''. It might be worth mentioning.

Any music majors out there know how many fingers a "diminished 10th" (had it existed) required? My music theory knowledge being severely limited, I don't think the diminished 9th meant that 10 fingers are required to play a chord (thereby implying a diminished 10th would require 11 fingers). I think it had something to do with the number of steps that you went down??? Egh. I'll stick to computers.

:You're right, the term "diminished" has nothing to do with the number of fingers required. Indeed, there is no such thing as an "11-finger chord" because there are only six strings on a guitar (unless you're talking about a 12-String guitar). To "diminish" means to lower an interval (the distance in pitch between two notes), and the number of steps you lower it depends on what sort of interval you're dealing with. It's a little difficult to explain in non-technical terms. So I will be technical. I hope anyone with a slight familiarity with music theory might be able to follow me.
:*To change a major interval (major 2nd, 3rd, 6th, or 7th) to diminished, you lower it by two steps (one tone). To change a minor interval (a major interval that has already been lowered) to diminished, you lower it by a step (semitone). To change a perfect interval (unison/octave, 4th, or 5th), you lower it by just one semitone.
:*A "diminished chord" is a chord which consists of a root, a minor 3rd, and a diminished 5th. For example, "B D F" is a diminished chord.
:*If you add a minor 9th (and since there are eight notes in a scale, it's actually a minor 2nd, but that's another matter) to that it becomes a "diminished 9th chord". So, therefore, the above would become "B D F C".

(By the way, asking for a position of power—no matter where you are (except maybe Wikipedia)—is a sure way to guarantee that the position will ''not'' be handed to you. Just so you know.) If I may throw in my own perspective on this, "with great power comes great responsibility." From what I've observed, being a sysop means making a lot of tough judgement calls, speaking nicely to people when you'd rather not, getting blamed for just about anything that goes wrong (real or perceived) and a lot of really hard work. :Well, that's not quite true, unless you have a very narrow definition of admin. If by admin you mean someone on the [[Template:adminteam|Admin Team]], then [[User:Stu|Stu]] definitely has a [[User:Stu/sig|signature]]. If you mean people who are on the Admin Team and are currently active in the day-to-day maintenance of the site, then you're right, only Joey has really customized his signature. Of the six of us, however, only [[User:AgentSeethroo|AgentSeethroo]] has no customization to speak of. [[User:Tom|Tom]], [[User:InterruptorJones|InterruptorJones]], and I all have subtle modifications from the standard. If, on the other hand, when you say admins you mean sysops, then there is quite a bit of customization. [[User:Thunderbird L17|Thunderbird]] and [[User:FireBird|FireBird]] have had special sigs for as long as I can remember, as have [[User:Jay|Jay]], [[User:Homestar Coder|Homestar Coder]], [[User:Kilroy|Kilroy]], and [[User:The Paper|The Paper]]. :It's pretty much a judgment call in almost all cases. For IP addresses, 1 to 3 days, depending on the severity of the vandalism. For ''really'' bad stuff, a week or so. If a vandal is obviously changing IPs within a narrow range, blocking the range X.X.X.0/24 (or 23) usually works. Users who make useful contributions should be reasoned with first if possible, not blocked. Accounts created for no purpose other than to vandalize should be blocked infinitely. :For those of you following along at home, I was technically made a bureaucrat and a developer on the same day. The only reason I wasn't added to the developer group in the wiki software is because there's a subtle difference between being a developer and being in the developer group. At the time I was made a developer, the wiki developer group was inactive. Since then, we reenabled it, and when we did, I was put in the group, even though for practical purposes I was already in it. Make sense? Okay, now that we have that out of the way: Bureaucrats can assign and unassign users to groups (usually to make sysops), and can also rename users. People in the developer group can lock and unlock the database. That originally was the only function available, but since then I have extended it somewhat using my developer abilities. And here's the distinction: a developer has direct access to the server and database. I decided that it was funny that someone coming to learn would see that (yes, I know, very immature and stupid of me). That was the full extent that I knew of what I was doing. I later learned of the concept of wiki vandalism from Uncyclopedia. I have been using this wiki for years without knowing exactly how maintenance worked; when I did I became jealous of the sysops. I wished to make a name for myself here without doing years of work (rather like WoW, I was trying to gain infamy). My attacks became somewhat meaner as I went on, and I attacked users when I got tired of simply tampering with content. I started thinking of ways to justify it to myself, such as that injustice was being done to me over userboxes, or that my name alone had gotten me banned. I guess I saw it as a way to "break loose" because I am normally NOT a rude or confrontational person. I just stopped for two reasons: I was ashamed of myself, and I was inspired by the way [[User:Granola|Yeltensic]] had turned himself around. In any case, I am deeply sorry. The least I can do is tell you how I did the vandalism so that you can better protect against anything that might happen in the future.
::I used two dynamic IP's: Safari and AOL. Aol has a set of three or four dynamic IP's that change within a narrow range from page to page. Safari's IP changes once every day, but it usually retains the first two segments (75.123.12.32, 75.123.32.34.... and so on). I opened numerous windows at once and typed in my edits and (sigh) summeries. This way the vandalism was at a high speed. I had a question, and I'm not sure where else to put it. Can you explain why you didn't you think my "Grizzly chomps" fun fact in the Candy Product was a good one? I may be biased, but I think it applies pretty well. TBC have been known to reference old and obscure pop-culture items in the past, and I can't think of any other "pre-bitten" candy product sold in stores. I'd like to think they had this product in mind when they made the toon. You can even Google for it and read up on it.

Anyhow, I just wanted to know what my options were for debating this fact. Is this is something I could put in STUFF for debate? And if so, how?

The submission was:
*The "built-in bite" shape of SBLOUNSKCHED! may refer to Grizzly Chomps, a [[Wikipedia:Hostess|Hostess]]-brand treat introduced in 1992. The package included two chocolate cupcakes with a bite-mark shape cut out of them, and the package bore a cartoon bear saying, "I start 'em, you finish 'em."

:I removed it because the Grizzly Chomps are so old and obscure that any similarity to SBLOUNSKCHED is likely just a coincidence. None of the secondary details match, especially the reason for the bite. In the case of Grizzly Chomps, the bear helps you eat it for some reason, but Strong Bad calls the bite in his candy a security measure to deter others from eating it. I think that TBC independently thought it was funny to have a bite missing from the candy, and to suggest otherwise is too much speculation for my taste.

:::Unless you have über-1337 haxx0r access like our friend It's dot com here, the only way you're going to be doing anything to the wiki is with normal page loads, ie exactly as if you were editing it by hand, just automated. So any language that you can use to access the net you could theoretically use to write a bot. However since many languages have packages to simplify HTTP, these languages would be easier to use, and some languages (like Python) even have pre-built wikibot frameworks for you to work off. But this doesn't say you can't go and write your wikibot in pretty much any language – it's simply a matter of how hard it is to write. Python is a simple-to-learn language anyways. I doubt you would ever write a bot that used PHP, and rarely would you write one that used MySQL. I'm the guy that changed the Dangeresque character page to note that dangeresque's glasses somehow stay on his head despite his total lack of ears. You changed it back, saying "(that's true, but it's not really very notable)"

Not notable? This is homestarwiki! You've got an entire page on the battle of strongbadia, despite the fact that it only applies to one email. And allow me to quote some other character pages...

Homestar: "Though he lacks a visible pair of arms, he is still able to function as though he has them, being able to carry and throw things and even type proficiently. It's generally accepted that either he does have arms, but for reasons that are never explained, they are invisible, or that he has limited telekinetic powers. "

Um...so yeah. I'm not mad or anything. I just wanted to point out that dangeresque's floating glasses can probably be considered significant if all this other stuff is on the site. (Hey, you could even tie it in with Strong Bad's rumored telekinesis, right?)

I agree with you that Dangeresque's glasses do not seem to have anything supporting them (although I suppose one could argue that they are held to his face by tension or even glue). My main problem with noting it on the Dangeresque page is that it really breaks up the flow of that sentence (which is based largely on the [[Dangeresque (theme)|Dangeresque theme]]). In addition, the information isn't really that central to the character; it's more like [[TBC]] just worked in the glasses as best they could given the features of Strong Bad's head. I'm not suggesting that we not note the information ''anywhere''. Perhaps you could put it in the list of [[Lack of Visible Arms#References to Other Apparently Invisible Body Parts|references to other apparently invisible body parts]]. I never patrol an edit unless I am pretty sure of (1) the overall content of the article, (2) the intent of the editor, and (3) whether or not the edit is good for the article. (Vandal edits still get marked as patrolled, but the article is immediately reverted. Likewise, edits that add incorrect information are either reverted or reworked as the situation warrants.
