A Song From The Sixties?
Can anyone come up with song references from Homsar's speeches? 'Gravy train' could be a reference to Pink Floyd's 'Have a Cigar' but maybe it's just some of his home-spun wisdom. Also, not a direct quote, but 'a million ladies tall' feels sort of like 'half a century high' ala Phil Ochs. Just some random stabs here, it seemed a lot more cohesive in my mind.
:"Gravy Train" is a common phrase meaning getting a lot of money (or something along those lines. Also, Have a Cigar was written in 1975, so it's clearly not a song from the sixties.

Move?
I think this article should be renamed Homsar (Character). The email article should be moved to Homsar (email).
A Hypothesis About Homsar's Behavior
I have a hypothesis concerning why Homsar behaves the way he does.

I believe that Homsar was drafted and sent to Vietnam in the late sixties ("I'm a song from the sixties." could be a reference to this because many songs in the sixties were about the war in Vietnam) and there he witnessed some horrible things that resulted in a dreadful case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To escape his flashbacks after retuning home he began taking copious amounts of LSD and rapidly became psychologically dependant on it. After a decade or so of this heavy use, Homsar cleaned himself up; but the side effects from the long-term LSD use compounded by his PTSD cause him to be detached from reality much to this day in the form of incorrect visual identification of objects, mental incongruity, and flashbacks to Vietnam (explaining Homsar's frequent screaming episodes).

Some might argue with me about my analysis, saying that Homsar is simply retarded. I admit to you that this might be tempting to say, but if he were truly retarded many of the pop culture references Homsar makes would be near impossible because most forms of retardation limit the individual's vocabulary for such things; and furthermore, retardation does not often result in rampant grammatical structure disjunction and word misapplication, as seen in Homsar's case, especially when compared to the symptoms seen in long-term LSD ex-users.
Regardless, he begs this sort of exploration! -Shufei

You got it all wrong. Homsar is a jar of mayonase from the sixties that got left out next to the TV (hense the constant references to old shows) and witnessed the goings on of the kitchen (thus being raised by a cup of coffee). The mayo spoiled and some odd bacteria gegan to grow on it, eventualy evolving into a half-sentient being that can walk and talk, albeit strangely. Given a few centuries, he may hope to attain Homestar's level of inteligence. --The Real Zajac 13:54, 21 Jul 2005 (PDT)
I'd go with a merge, except I disagree that it "has a mind of its own," because it always seems to follow a particular logic to its flight paths (or orbit) from and back to Homsar's head. I think it usually "takes flight" when Homsar is trying to emphasize something, which is pretty much every time he says anything. == Examples in Biography? ==

Okay, this is coming up fairly consistently in the Biography, so I wanted to pose a question to the people who run the show around here: Do we need specific examples of oddness in interacting with Homsar in his biography? For example, is it appropriate to point out that Homsar called Strong Sad "That Rhinoceros", and quoting Strong Bad's comment about Homsar in interview?

:I think the nickname could be found on the page that follows its name. As for the latter, I don't think we need mention that. &mdash; 00:04, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

:::::I guess more importantly, I've seen a lot of similar edits get reverted for one reason or another. My reason for changing the line about "That Rhinoceros" was to clarify that Homsar SOMETIMES does refer to other characters by their real names, and I felt the best way to write that was to say "He refers to other characters by random nicknames from time to time". Also, the "conversations" example seemed redundant and unnecessary to me, and like I said, I've seen things like that get zapped pretty consistently in the past. That's why I brought this up. - KieferSkunk 00:16, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
::::::I'm not sure the version of the page I reverted to is the best one. All I'm saying is that, as long as you've asked for input, you should give people a chance to respond. Just opening this thread to discuss the phrase "Nonsense incarnate" (Homsar is nonsense incarnate). The most common real-life use of this phrasing I'm aware of is "Person is the Devil incarnate" - usually to refer to an unruly child, a particularly heinous criminal, etc. I have, however, NEVER heard the phrase "Person is the Devil incarnated" (past-tense). Anyone wanna discuss this? 05:23, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
::Nope; it's not so much an accent as a "voice," in the way that all H*R characters have distinctive voices. Anyone else notice the caption used on the pic on this page is one of the things Homsar never actually said? He may not have been raised by a cup of coffee. But he is the captain of the gravy train. :Well, someone changed it after you edited it. I set it to be the same as the slogan on his T-shirt (the cup of coffee). I have a bigger question, though: Why does his caption have to be static? == Speculation? ==

A new section called "Analysis of Homsar's Character" was recently added to this page. While I'm duly impressed that someone took the trouble to write this analysis, the section seems to me to be speculatory and non-encyclopedic. I didn't feel right just removing it without getting others' opinions, though. What do you all think? 04:27, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

:I'm not sure either way. Yes, it is speculative, but we've allowed speculation in smaller doses elsewhere, like sbemail fun facts. And the preponderance of the preceding text paints him out to be a "little weirdo" so the few inches taken up proposing he might actually be a savant genius isn't so intrusive.

:Again, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's so bad it should be deleted. STUFF'ed, maybe. 04:31, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
::Just one little note: STUFFing is only for Fun Facts. Discussions about other contents of pages usually takes place on talk pages, like is happening now. 04:36, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
:::Ya, what you said. I meant, if STUFF was used for this sort of thing. I guess we simply need more input. 04:51, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
:I got rid of it. It was uncohesive, largely speculative, and didn't really make a whole lot of sense.
Psychokinesis
"Support for this theory is not only the fact that Homsar's hat floats whenever he speaks, but that it can float even when he isn't. "
This sentence seems very odd to me. I fully support all of the armless characters' psychokinesis (as opposed to invisible arms) but I don't see this sentence supporting it. What does it matter that his hat floats both when he is and isn't talking? Trelawney

Word Salads
Since I couldn't find the place where we discussed this previously, I'll bring it up again here. I have an issue with the Speech section stating that Homsar speaks in "word salads". The description of word salad in that section is totally correct, but I don't think it applies to Homsar's general speech. The only time I've seen word salads connected with Homsar has been in interview, where Strong Bad was basically mocking Homsar with a pen puppet. "DaAa, Rightio. I think I can twice" is probably the best word salad on the site, and that was Strong Bad making that up, not Homsar actually saying it.

Generally speaking, Homsar's statements are less gibberish and more out-of-context. Aside from his first two appearances (homsar and Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 5.0), virtually everything he's said has made some sort of sense, but it's rare that two sentences relate to each other, or that a statement to another character matches the context of what the other character said. This isn't quite "word salad", however.

Not sure what my ultimate point with this Talk topic is, but I figured I'd bring it up anyway. :) T'would be the pride of the peaches, I'm sure. :) 23:54, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

:The first mention I can find of it in the article is in <span class="plainlinks">this edit</span> from 2 May 2005.&nbsp;-- Tom 00:04, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

::Right. My point, though, is that Homsar does make SOME sense in some cases, whereas he doesn't in others. An example: "Hi Strong Bayad! Is that rhinoceros around?" in interview - Homsar was looking for Strong Sad, so his question makes sense. His next statement, "I'm a song from the sixties", makes no sense at all in that context, and that could qualify as a word salad. As another example, though, "You gotta get yours, I gotta get mine!" in army, could be a perfectly reasonable response to Homestar's call to action.

::So, to say that he speaks frequently or entirely in word salads would be incorrect, IMO - in fact, I think he tends to just have a funny way of saying things most of the time, and he uses word salads only every now and then. 18:14, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

:::Note that Wikipedia mentions Homsar on both the article and talk page about word salads. I bring this up not to suggest that we necessarily follow their article, just that we take into account what they have to say and, if anything big is decided from this discussion, that the appropriate comments and/or changes be made there too. &mdash; It's dot com 18:48, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
::::I've done a detailed analysis on Homsar's speech patterns, and I think I've conclusively proven that Homsar does not suffer (much) from word salad. In fact, he's actually quite coherent most of the time. It seems that if he needs to, he can and does relate well to his environment, but when he doesn't need to, he's prone to saying random things - if for no other reason than just to have something to say.

::::What's everyone's opinion on posting this analysis as an official article, or posting it to this Talk page, so we can link to it from the main Homsar article without it linking to my user space? 07:50, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

You got it all wrong. Homsar is a jar of mayonase from the sixties that got left out next to the TV (hense the constant references to old shows) and witnessed the goings on of the kitchen (thus being raised by a cup of coffee). I don't think this should be listed as "may or may not be by the Brothers Chaps". I checked it out on archive.org, and until February of last year it was a blog site entitled "Home Of My Stories And Rants". I wouldn't be surprised if they shut down after they got a lot of misdirected attention from their name, which would explain why the site now just says "go away"

Just opening this thread to discuss the phrase "Nonsense incarnate" (Homsar is nonsense incarnate). My understanding is that "Person is X incarnate" is grammatically correct, and that it means the concept X is embodied in Person. The most common real-life use of this phrasing I'm aware of is "Person is the Devil incarnate" - usually to refer to an unruly child, a particularly heinous criminal, etc. I have, however, NEVER heard the phrase "Person is the Devil incarnated" (past-tense). A new section called "Analysis of Homsar's Character" was recently added to this page. :I'm not sure either way. Yes, it is speculative, but we've allowed speculation in smaller doses elsewhere, like sbemail fun facts.

The quotes for cut scenes "after level 27" don't look kosher to me. How could he say "Smote that Kerrek" if the arcade game predated the Kerrek Email?<BR>
:I'm not seeing anything that says the Trogdor game was created before the interview email. Dragon and Interview were only a month apart. Even so, TBC could still have added it in later. "Smote that Kerreck" is plainly there, just fast forward a little. Please, anybody, notice this message board, and tell me how to FF past that one level. Thank you so much...I would be immensely obliged! -Justin Hack 10/09/04
As far as I know, any program that lets you fast forward won't let you actually play the levels. That said, they recently fixed level 27 (around Valentine's Day '05), so it is now beatable.
Does anyone have an archived version of the ORIGINAL Trogdor game as it was posted on the website the week the guys were "In Da Basement"? This original version lacked the impossible level 27, but it also lacked all cartoons post-level-20. I'm just curious if a copy's sitting out there somewhere...
[On another note, I'm pretty sure I've visited multiple treasure huts per game, contrary to what I've read on this website.]
Easter Eggs
*Click and hold the "G" in the TROGDOR title to see some game hints.
**Don't let the peasants return to their cottages.
**Once you're burninating, you're invincible.
**Burninated peasants set their cottages on fire.
**Get an extra man every 300 points.
**What's a treasure hut?!?!
**Secret Code?!?!
*On the hints screen, you can use the Konami Code (up up down down left right left right B A, and then click the word "START"). This will start you off with 30 lives.
*During the game you can hit the "k" key to kick the game. This doesn't seem to give you any advantage, but it does cause the machine to repeat the word "TROGDOR!" (A reference to Arcade Game.)
*Treasure Huts! You can enter certain huts and pick-up gold! To get to them you must burninate certain huts that block them. You may only enter one Treasure Hut per game.
**Some of these huts are:
**On level 7, the leftmost hut. Burninate the 4 huts in the way.
**On level 11, the lower right hut. Burninate the huts around it.
**On level 16, the upper left hut. Burninate the three huts in the way.
**On level 43, the rightmost hut. Burninate the hut above it.

Tips
* If a peasant makes it back into their cottage, you lose a point on the meter of peasants you squished (unless the meter is already empty). This can be frustrating when some cottages are inaccessible. Make sure you don't miss opportunities to squish peasants on these levels.
* Knights move in a pattern consisting of two moves (repeated over and over), completely ignoring Trogdor and the peasants. Their pattern gets "mirrored" when they hit a wall. Learning their patterns is one of the keys to doing well in the game.
* When you burninate peasants, they will run back to their cottage, which will burninate the cottage without need for direct burnination.
* Peasants will still come out of Burninated cottages, though Trogdor can walk right through them. Knights and arrows can go through any cottage.
* Archers appear in much greater frequency when you progress, but knights tend to be the main obstacle. Be sure to pay attention to the edges of the screen for archers. Arrows go about the same speed as Trogdor.

Fun Facts
Trivia
*Using a seek bar suggests that this game was originally intended to have a high-score board. It actually does here; unfortunately, this version has the old impossible level 27 (see below) and some bugs.
*Flex it Troggie, Forbidden Peasant Love, and Smote That Kerrek are the only three animations that use art that isn't used during gameplay.

Remarks
*In Peasant's Quest it says that Trogdor is invincible, but he can die in this game.
*When an archer kills Trogdor, it shows Trogdor with several arrows stuck in him, even though the archer shot only one.
*When Trogdor gets sworded, the knight is still holding his sword and there is one sticking out of Trogdor.

Goofs
*Lev. 27 was well nigh impossible. The peasant-paths were accessible only for 2 of the 6 cottages, so for every peasant you squished there were 2 left to wander back into their cottages (diminishing your burninator meter). Meanwhile, the cottages themselves walled you in to a very small area, which made you a sitting duck for archers and knights. This level was "fixed" as of February 12, 2005, making it much simpler to beat. The change is documented in the FAQ.

Glitches
*Pausing causes a purple ball to become visible on the screen.
*If you pause the game (using the space bar) when the archer is out pulling his bow, he will get stuck there until the end of the level, even if you die on that level.
**UPDATE: As of February 12, 2005, this glitch has been fixed, so archers will disappear after unpausing the game and reappear as normal... ALTHOUGH, the glitch is still present on the version that includes a high score list.
*If you die as soon as you achieve burnination status, you will come back to life with burnination, assuming you have any mans left.
* When you pause the game while a cottage is burninating, it will continue to burninate until it is destroyed.
*Sometimes you will get "SWORDED" just because you are near the knight, not by necessarily making contact with him.
*In the .swf version, right click and click play after the knight swords you on your last man to start at -1 mans, but click play again for game over.
*If you pause at the "LEVEL BEATEN" screen Trogdor will be unmovable afterward and cannot unpause.
**This glitch has apparently been fixed.
*If you are still burninating while you go into a secret room, then it will show the flame where you last were.
*For a very short moment after burnination stops (and the fire is no longer visible), you can still burninate cottages and peasants.
*Sometimes, while in a treasure hut, Trogdor will get randomly "SWORDED," but you won't lose any lives.
*If you burninate a peasant, then run out of burnination and squish that same peasant, then one of the cottages may spontaneously combust after a short time.

Real-World References
*The "Arch-Deluxe" is a reference to an old McDonald's Burger called the Arch Deluxe.

*Jonathan Howe's name being an easter egg is actually a reference to Adventure for the Atari 2600. When it was made Atari intentionally kept game designers from achieving celebrity status (or getting a sniff of royalties/credit). In rebellion to this, Warren Robinett hid his name inside what is commonly regarded as the first Easter egg. It was accessible only by picking up an invisible object, carrying it through a dragon-infested maze, and touching it to a blank wall. Doing this revealed a room with Warren's name plastered all over in rainbow colors.

*The peasants in love may be a reference to the video game Pac-man, by Namco, in which Pac-man and Mrs. Pac-man move onto the screen and a heart forms above them.
Fast Forward
*Dan, from the caption "Fry 'em up Dan", is later used in Thy Dungeonman II and Peasant's Quest, as well as Stinkoman 20X6. This seems to have become a running gag with all of the new games.

It actually does here; unfortunately, this version has the impossible level 27 (see below).

*"Oh, Trogdor! I pine for you." is a reference to trevor the vampire.
**"IT'S OVER!" is also a reference to Teen Girl Squad.
*This game has a "Mans" counter.

*Wordly Wise is a series of textbooks designed to build student's vocabulary. What this has to do with the Kerrek is unknown.

*When you die the replay button says "CHALLENGE AGAIN!". This references the ending of Ghosts and Goblins which says the same thing.

*"Fry 'em up Dan" is a direct quote from Shel Silverstein's poem "Ladies First".

Strong Bad Quotes
*Strong Bad will say things while you play. Here's a list:

:Arrowed:
:* "Ugh, stupid arch-deluxe."

:Squish a Peasant:
::*STRONG SAD: "I don't even want to play that game."
:*"Wow! That's the best secret thing I ever found in a video game. It's like... some dude's name. Flashing and stuff. {Jonathan Howe's name appears flashing}

:Upon reaching certain animations:
:*"Mmmmm, roast Kerrek!"
:*"What the? What am I doing in this game?!"
:*"It sounds so... realistic."
