The filenames you get when you click SB's diamond are heavily truncated and abbreviated, and match the style of old DOS 8.3 names (that's in length... 8 letters, a period, and three more letters) that were in use before long file names were made possible through Windows. Such names were used so filenames could still be descriptive and still fit within the 8.3 limitations at the same time. However SB's filenames are still clearly far too long to fit within 8.3 characters. --64.195.243.2 14:12, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
:I exploded the cooling system in my mom's computer and it continued to work fine. Well, maybe not "fine" (it freezes up whenever the CPU gets too hot), but I'm sure Strong Bad could continue to check email, especially since the giant hole in the screen would provide additional cooling. I'm trying to add the fact that, though "the eighth wonder of the world" is applied a lot, Strong Bad's use is almost certainly a direct reference to the most famous, Carl Denham's carnival-barker-like use of the term to introduce Kong in captivity in the classic 1933 film "King Kong." However, it keeps getting undone, instantly.
I've seen the movie enough times that it was the first thing to come to mind when Strong Bad used the term. In fact, that's the most famous one, as I said; furthermore, the combination of Strong Bad as carnival barker, and the fact that he's introducing Strong Mad, seems to make it extremely plausible. So, in the DVD commentary, there's some speculation amongst TBC on what key Strong Bad hit with his pickaxe. *2: No, it does not contain every TGS character to date. For example, the Floor Tom and the Vulture/Bat don't appear. See the Minor TGS Characters page for a bunch of characters that fail to appear.
Vowels
Vowels are A-E-I-O-U "Y" is not a vowel :p
:Sometimes it is. It's being used as a vowel in this case. --DorianGray
Y is not a vowel. And sign your posts. 19:37, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

::Also from Wikipedia: The name "vowel" is often used for the symbols used for representing vowel sounds in a language's writing system, particularly if the language uses an alphabet. In the Latin alphabet, the vowel letters are usually A, E, I, O, U, and in some languages Y, as in English. -- Mycroft.holmes 19:50, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

:::Oh yeah, because an entirely user-edited encyclopaedia can NEVER contradict itself. Why don't we go with the majority and accept that Y is NOT a vowel?
::::Encarta seems to agree as well. After all, the way most schools teach vowels is A-E-I-O-U and SOMETIMES Y. In "sorry," Y is a vowel, as it is nearly impossible to construct a meaningful syllable without a vowel. Does "syzygy" also have no vowels in it? No. ... Okay, I rambled. Sorry. But Y is a vowel in this case. Spell4yr 20:41, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

:::: Because it is. The word "vowel" denotes how the letter is used, not what the letter is. As it happens, Y isn't the only "consonant" that can be used as a vowel (W is common, and G and H show up often too.) It's just that the five letters most commonly called "vowels" are the ones NEVER used as consonants. -- 20:39, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

"Vowel" and "consonant" are phonetic distinctions, not letter distinctions. "We're sorry" is pronounced (IPA) /wi:r sɒˈri:/ - both /i/s and the /ɒ/ are the vowels. It is simply that the large majority of vowel sounds are represented in English with A-E-I-O-U which is why they're called the 5 vowels. So we then have 2 definitions of "vowel" - a vowel phoneme (which is relevant for the "there's at least one vowel in every syllable" rule) or a vowel letter (strictly A-E-I-O-U, possibly Y depending on who you ask). The confusion only comes when you get the two confused - for example a syllable does not require A-E-I-O-U(-Y), just a vowel phoneme. Getting back to the point, it's impossible to pronounce words completely without vowel phonemes, /ə/ slips in everywhere (/wər sər/ is as far as you can take "we're sorry"). "Removing all the vowels" only makes sense from a vowel letter view, in which case Y only applies if whoever it is wants it to. And now I'm rambling a bit, so I'll stop. 00:13, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

You know... even after all this controversy, it doesn't make a good Fun Fact, since she never mentions taking ALL the vowels out. She says "taking the vowels out," which, yes, implies all the vowels, but doesn't say it emphatically. —AbdiViklas 07:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
Maybe they actually did do it intentionally. Maybe they saw how it turned out and liked what they got. Or maybe there was some technical limitation that made it like it is. **The fact that we don't know their intentions is a prime reason for it to be a remark. I'd rather err on the side of TBC here. * <s>Remark. * Glitch - some explination of how TBC make things rotate is in order. Making a realistic rotation would be very time consuming, and you'd need to draw almost every frame to get it to look smooth. However, TBC take a shortcut - almost everything they make that rotates is just a plain sphere with a thing added on it, eg Strong Bad's face or his shoelace thingy - apart from that his head is perfectly round - so when they rotate his head left and right only the face and shoelace have to move, the actual head can stay still. Now for the second shortcut - when his face moves around his head, they don't actually do anything fancy to make it go "around" - they just move it straight from left to right, no distortion, no parallax, nothing. Then they take a mask the shape of SB's head and use it to crop the face to the head. The result - it looks like the face is going around the head. Look at the picture on the right if you're not sure what I mean. If the effect isn't strong enough they add things like skews to make it more real, but for the most part they don't need to. Now we come to Cheerleader's shirt. They did the same thing they always do. They animated everyone's faces and the writing on Cheerleader's dress as moving across them from side to side. Then they added a mask to their faces, but forgot to add a mask to Cheerleader's dress. Hence it is a glitch, I see no reason for them to do this intentionally, and a perfectly good reason for them to do it accidentally. As for Goof vs Glitch, I thought Goofs were things like plot holes, mistakes in the design of the toon, and Glitches were mistakes in the actual building of the toon in Flash, like this. 03:56, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

The wording of the Standard you linked is: "...if things mysteriously vanish or appear (and it's not obviously intentional...)." Personally I have a problem with that wording; I would move it be changed to "obviously not intentional." Little change, big difference. First of all, let's all notice that they did animate the rotating speech bubble on the first rotation, okay? Then it disappears because they're done talking. Now if it was in fact an omission, it was a pretty big honkin' one; it's not like the grass around Strong Sad; it's a huge... well, thing. My personal opinion is that they left it off the second time because this rotation is essentially a visual effect, and they didn't want it to get in the way of the effect. If it was in fact an omission, it would have to be a last-minute, bleary-eyed, semi-conscious one (which doesn't fit the quality of the rest of the 'toon). I'm staying non-commital as usual, but I find the arguments for not even mentioning this one pretty strong. —AbdiViklas 04:20, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
: "Not obviously intentional" conveys the meaning I intended when I wrote that better than "Obviously not intentional." For instance, with the "baby daddy" thing, it's not obviously not intentional, but it's not obviously intentional either. (If you can parse that.) However, the disagreement here is on just what IS obvious in this case. This much is obvious: they didn't just reverse and repeat the scene, since the speech bubble is missing. Maybe they just felt like drawing it twice, maybe the second time was an earlier version, or maybe it was intentional. And, at any rate, I'm not willing to call it a "Goof," because it's really not needed (speech bubbles are not physical objects in the real world, so its non-inclusion doesn't really affect what's happening in the scene at all.) So remark. -- 06:43, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
:::I'm clean with leaving it out, but we should note for this discussion that, even though this is a visual effect, the sound remains, indicating a simple re-wind. The omission is indeed obvious, so leave it out. -B 06:13, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

The more I think about this the more it seems the must have tried just reversing the whole scene, speech bubble inclusive, and realised it didn't look very good (I mean, the speech bubble disappeared when they finished talking and String Bad started talking, and it would look weird for it to return), so they removed it. So I'm changing my vote to either put it in the transcript or leave it out entirely, probably the latter. 16:22, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Why is Hilary Duff being insulted due to Sweet Someteen via Ugly One? (Sweet Sixteen reference) Also, there's MTV and Billy Idol feelin' down BECAUSE of that horrible reference/insult. RHRN
:I'm thinking "Sweet Someteen" is simply a way to avoid saying how old the girls are (something that's been hotly debated). Ask ol' Tommy that question, seeing as HE put it in the Wikipedia, not me. Oh, and tell him I'm a Hilary Duff fan who thinks she's HAWT and shouldn't be insulted even by The Brothers Chaps. RHRN
: What does Hillary Duff have to do with ANY of this? -- 20:23, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
Hmm... she made a song called Sweet Sixteen describing EVERY DETAIL about being sixteen years old. The Brothers Chaps were likely to have collected the detail and reverse it for the effect of Sweet Someteen...and Jay is...ARROWED!!! RHRN the Jigglypuff
: "Sweet sixteen" is a common phrase; in fact, there is a song called "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" that was written before Ms. Duff was even born. -- 20:27, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
If Miss Duff herself reported being offended by it, that would be fairly noteworthy; if TBC said in a commentary or interview they had her in mind it would be a solid connection—but if "Sweet Sixteen" is the only connection, there isn't much to go on. (And frankly, I doubt TBC would go out of their way to insult her; their references tend to be reserved for pre-1995 cultural phenomena, and are seldom truly insulting.) —AbdiViklas 20:32, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
::You know, the last time we actually saw them eating anything, they were MSG'd; maybe this is simply a reactive response. Though since then, So And So has expressed the willingness to accept a Lunchables or a juice box. Also, though we don't know whether they ate it or not, we do recall that day when lunch was a breadtangle of pizza, making this the second time their appetites have been thwarted by capriciously-themed school lunches contrary to the natural order of things. (It is What's Her Face who underscores that pizza belongs in a triangle—but, unless it had a soy-based imitation cheese topping, it is unlikely that she, as a vegan, would have eaten it in either shape.) In conclusion, between corn chips, corn-and-corn-alone, Lunchables with juice, and chocolate bars dipped in salt, it is safe to assume that a suitable foodstuff may be found for each of the Teen Girls, and we may tentatively ascribe their hunger strike to culinary imagination gone amok rather than to insecurities of image. —AbdiViklas 05:51, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
I keep getting the feeling that the line is a play on the line "Get it on like Donkey Kong" from the country song Honky Tonk Ba Donk-A-Donk. A while back, I remember changing this page to read that Bowser does not appear in a TRADITIONAL game for the black-and-white Game Boy (it originally said he did not appear in ANY game for it), because he appears in Game and Watch Gallery. Now that I think about it, since that's the case, should the fun fact remain at all?
The two italicized sentences above are different ways this item has been worded. If the first is true, then this is probably notable. If it's the second, then it's not. (As long as there's one game where Bowser could be said to be on the ropes, then Tompkins is simply playing that game.) == So... ==

Meh, figured I'd do this. (note that this obviously isn't required) Just a few questions I thought I'd ask:
#What is your favorite email(s) and/or toon(s), if any?
#Who is your favorite H*R character, or characters, if any?
#Do you have any other particular interests in H*R.com or the H*R wiki, and if so, name some.
# Since there are so many it's difficult to choose just one, so a few of my favorites tend to be the outright silly ones that tend to not make much sense on the first and possibly subsequent views like the SBemails funny and virus, to things that are funny just because of their content, like jibblies 2.
# First place: Strong Bad. Second place:The Cheat. Third place: Homestar Runner just because he seems to be the target of a lot of humorous jokes.
# I figured that registering for an account would help me participate in Wiki discussions involving goofs and glitches within flash files. I've made two contributions to the wiki in the past under no account name, watched as the change was immediately reversed, and then brought back a few hours or days later in a revised state. So I figure it'd likely be better and easier if I brought them up in discussions and let someone else word them better.
After who knows how long, we finally get a toon! This truly is a D-Ween Mackerel!
On to Bweeze-Ness. Here are some things I have noticed.
*On the Main Page it says "New Holiday Toon", and when hovered over it says "For real!"
*When Cardgage is "revived" he makes the same shine and noise as when "Eh, Steve!'s mouth exploded the universe" in Cactus Coffee and the No Tell Hotel"
*Non specific mouthwash and the guy who says I'm going to need you to sign this makes fun of people being sued for using product names.
*Marzipan and Homestar both sung a modified version of O, Decemberween.
*Strong Sad being locked in the tub is a reference to other D-Ween toons.
*This toon constantly references Cardgage's death. And hints at Homsar's
*When Marzipan and Homestar are walking at the beginning, Homestar has footsteps and Marzi is leaving a solid trail, again hinting she is just a mass in a dress shape
*When Cardgage comes out of the bush, he makes the same traffic noise as in his FBI warning and Hremail 3184
*Coach Z is wearing a Blubb-Os box.
*The Bubs scene could be an instance of duplicate characters.
*Homeschool winner, Preshy, Rafferdy, Champeen, The Hurricane and another mass I can't identify at the end of the line are all in the bubs scence
*The Defib unit was previously seen in the Breakfast cereal email
*This is an toon not only in widescreen but it is big altogether even bigger than the games menu(I personally can't fit it on my screen VERTICALLY entirely)

Just things I konticed.
I didn't want to bring it to the talk because it was a very fleeting suggestion, and I interpreted it to refer to Marzipan's line instead of Homestar's. However, if there's no more verification of this, we don't really have any means of professionally adding this to the article. ::Bobo the King - I was wrong to revert you, and i apologize. I didn't know what to look for, so i wasn't looking early enough. hope my clarifying revision works for you. Jay - for some reason, my right click menu isn't working, so i am unable to watch this by frames. once that gets fixed, i'll be able to see what you're talking about more clearly. 14:47, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
::: If you have Firefox, the Greasemonkey script helps a lot for frame-by-frame comparisons. :) -- 17:35, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
:::No worries, Knights. I've made more than my share of mistakes in editing and it's not as though any damage was done-- this is a Wiki, after all. I just wanted to throw it on the talk page since it seemed my version of the fun fact was unclear. No harm done, and apology graciously accepted!--Bobo the King 22:40, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
::::Jay - yes i use firefox, but i don't have that script. normally i can just right click and stop the action and watch it by frames that way. something tells me that if i manually crash firefox, the problem will fix itself, but at the same time, i'm always hesitant to do that. incidentally, for this edit summary, i went in and actually counted each individual frame. (it was only seven seconds at 12 fps; i figure it wouldn't take all that long) i figure since i hardly ever need to know frame numbers, downloading that script isn't all that urgent at the present time. 23:00, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
:::::what do you know, right click menu magically works again! and i didn't have to crash the browser or anything. anyway, Jay - wow, that's interesting. could a decompiler take out the bush? that would be crazy to watch... 02:33, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Marzipan's transition lines
I extracted the file of Marzipan's lines right before a couple of the transitions. Listen here: . I think her first line is "Move it on," not "Movin' on." I also hear no "r" in "Peeow." (Interestingly, there's an unused "Yoink" in there too.) — It's dot com 18:59, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
:The "Peeow" bit I'll buy, but I definitely hear "Movin' On." If I really try, I can sorta kinda hear an "it", but barely. 19:57, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
:Yeah, that doesn't sound like Move it on. 16:10, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Photo caption
Per the suggestion of It's dot com I'm taking this discussion here. The caption for the photo on the page is much, much too long and doesn't really fit the picture. We try to avoid unnecessarily lengthy captions here and this is one of them. Not to mention the fact that it really isn't funny, either. --That guy that slayed some Kerrek. 06:08, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
:The caption for the photo on the page is not too long at all. It fits the picture very well, much better in fact than the other one. We don't try to avoid unnecessarily lengthy captions. It's especially funny, in part because of its length. — It's dot com 06:13, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
::I'm largely ambivalent, but if required to make the choice, I'd go with DC's because, whatever anyone else may say, I do find it marginally funnier than the other. Also because I actually agree that it actually does fit the picture better than the other (for the "keep slogging" quote to fit well, Marzipan would need to have her angry look). I do grant that it's pretty long, but really, I don't know that we have any particular precedent against long quotes. Still, I'm not going to get too involved in this. I think caption wars are kind of a waste of time, anyway. 14:49, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
:::Easy there, German Homestar, let's not call this a "caption war". I've seen plenty of lengthy captions get cut back, and seven lines of space below a photo for something that quite frankly isn't funny is a little too much. There's gotta be a better way. --That guy that slayed some Kerrek. 07:48, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
::::"Caption war" = just a term for an edit war over captions, so I think it describes the situation well. As for the dispute, unfortunately, part of this is just plain subjective: whether that line is funny. You say it is not, Dot com says it is. No real objective answer to that dispute. For my part, I find it funny, though not exceedingly so. 09:26, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
:::::I find the extra-long caption funny. It was probably the first (of many) things that made me laugh in the toon. Additionally, extra-long captions are funny in and of themselves (see also Compy Catalog). But, objectively, who said the caption even needs to be funny? Can't it just be a caption? --DorianGray 09:31, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Toyota Cressida
In the Transcript section, at one point, Senor Cardgage is said to say this:
SENOR CARDGAGE: {moans} Oh, my Toyota Cressida... {Cardgage falls down}
But what if what he's actually saying is, "My Toyota crashed."? I think this makes sense because he could be using "Toyota" to refer to one of his organs, and saying it "crashed" would be kind of like it failing. And also because of the recent issue with Toyota vehicles and their brakes failing, causing them to crash. Though that may be too sensitive of a joke for an online show like this to make, especially so soon. Still, I think it's plausible that he could've said either one.
:Does anyone else notice that when Cardgage speaks at this point, his hair darkens? - Zoen 10:10, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Hello, Chi Minh?
Upon listening, couldn't it have been "Hello, G-Man"? After all, said character from the Half-Life series has a habit of appearing and disappearing, and Cardgage has just emerged from a ridiculously tiny bush.
