HRWiki:Changing username

From Homestar Runner Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The user name users choose for themselves is no longer set in stone. On request, Bureaucrats can change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name using Special:Renameuser. Note: You must make the request from the account you want renamed; anonymous requests (except users whose usernames begin with a lowercase letter and therefore cannot log in) are ignored for security reasons.

Requesting a change

  1. To change your user name, please make your request on this page.

Please follow the procedure carefully or your request will not be fulfilled.

  1. Check if the new name you want does not exist (Special:Listusers). Do not create an account under the new name. (If you already created the new account, don't worry. We can do some stuff and fix it, but it's still recommended that you don't.)
  2. Sign in with the account that you want renamed.
Of course, this is not possible if your account has a lowercase first letter. If you can't log in, then skip this step.
  3. Add your request in the section below.
  4. If you are a sysop, please note this fact with your request so that the necessary changes can be made.
  5. Once your request is dealt with, all edits from your old account will be reattributed to your new account.
  6. You should check that the old account has been recreated and blocked to prevent someone else creating the account and impersonating you.
This cannot be done in the case of usernames with a lowercase first letter, but they can no longer be registered so this isn't a problem.
  7. Move and redirect your user page and talk page to the new name if it has not already been done.

Can I get my username deleted? When I type in the main character of my website into AOL search, I get Homestar Wiki stuff.

You're bound to show up through HRWiki; it's not like we're remote. And no, your username can not be deleted. — Lapper (talk) 22:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Asked and answered. See HRWiki talk:FAQ#Can I delete myself from H*R Wiki?. -- Tom 23:05, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Can my username be changed to "Business Inquiries" if it can't be deleted?
Why exactly "Business Inquiries"? -- Tom 20:52, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I couldn't think of anything else...- Traveling Ham
If you aren't tied to that one for any reason, would you mind trying to think of something else? Also, what are your intentions for this account? Do you intend to never use it again, or do you plan on continue contributing with it? -- Tom 18:51, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, I would be happy to, except the name Kronosoldone already exists. In fact, I myself welcomed that name (on my birthday, if you're wondering). Are you that user? — It's dot com 03:08, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Phlip is right, the user "sijapu17" does not exist. See [1]. -- Tom 08:42, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Can you please change my username from "Rainer" to "Rob", and if possible, change my username on the fanstuff wiki and the forum. Thanks in advance! «Rob» 11:06, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, also, if "Rob" is already taken on the forum (I haven't checked), "Rob123" is fine for there. «Rob» 11:08, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
"Rainer" --> "Rob". Done on the knowledge base, fanstuff, and the forum. -- Tom 05:27, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

AIK_74 -> thecolorofinsanity

please. i wrould rrly appreceate it! AIK 74 (Talk | contribs) 20:12, 11 May 2006 (UTC) (left unsigned)

"thecolorofinsanity" is not a valid username. -- Tom 20:16, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
And I just realized you just had your name changed once already, less than two weeks ago. No, you can't change it again. -- Tom 21:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

well, how about telling me as to WHY IT ISN'T VALID. vulgar? profane? obscene? too long? needs more pudding? you just hate me? stinkoman the god said so? this is all a big ripoff to destroy my entire social lead in life? *whew* - AIK 74

It isn't valid because the first letter is lowercase. Please read the instructions at the top of the page for more information. But it doesn't matter, because as I said, I'm not going to change your name again. -- Tom 22:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

well, then, can i get a second account if i want said specified user name? and made it according to the user name making rules? - AIK 74

No, creating a known sockpuppet will cause the sockpuppet to be blocked from editing. -- Tom 21:16, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Can I have my name changed to Irnakk? NO!!! PLEASE... DON'T SHOOT!!! Tampo (T/C) AND SOMEONE GET THiS FREAKiN CURSOR AWAY FROM ME!!!!! 21:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

No. -- Tom 21:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
You've established such a legacy for yourself as Tampo, I can't justify such a name change. -- Tom 21:49, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
But why can't you change my name to Irnakk? NO!!! PLEASE... DON'T SHOOT!!! Tampo (T/C) AND SOMEONE GET THiS FREAKiN CURSOR AWAY FROM ME!!!!! 22:10, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
It's not that I can't, it's that I won't. -- Tom 22:12, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Because you've established such a legacy for yourself as Tampo. Also, the next time you shout at me or any other person, I'm going to restrict your editing privileges indefinitely. -- Tom 22:17, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Is it because I made too many edits? Also, I won't yell at you ever again. NO!!! PLEASE... DON'T SHOOT!!! Tampo (T/C) AND SOMEONE GET THiS FREAKiN CURSOR AWAY FROM ME!!!!! 22:19, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
It is because you've established such a legacy for yourself as Tampo. -- Tom 22:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Does that mean I've been using my username for a long time? NO!!! PLEASE... DON'T SHOOT!!! Tampo (T/C) AND SOMEONE GET THiS FREAKiN CURSOR AWAY FROM ME!!!!! 22:24, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
No. -- Tom 22:26, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Mind if I field this one? It means that when you say "User:Tampo", most people familiar with the wiki know who you're talking about. That's your legacy. --DorianGray
Well, Rainer had a huge legacy. He was almost a bureaucrat at the fanstuff wiki. But he changed his username to Rob. That said, people thinking of him as Tampo doesn't seem like a valid reason. — Seriously (Talk) 22:35, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Almost a bureaucrat? There's no such thing. Seriously, these matters are decided on a case by case basis. You do not have the standing here to question my decision in this way. As such, please mind your own business. -- Tom 22:41, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Count X --> «Âpðçã£ýpX» or Âpðçã£ýpX

I wouldn't prefer the latter, but it's the (PEOPLE WHO CHANGE NAMES)'s decision. Count X Talk Email

I would call this a very complicaded and hard to read and pronounce name. --Dacheatbot · Communicate 22:05, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
I think it would be pronounced "Ahp-thsa-pound-ipcks", but I'm not quite sure how ã is supposed to be pronounced (it's a Portuguese letter with no equivalent phoneme in English), and the "th" of ð is supposed to be the voiced th, like in "them", which is hard to pronounce when followed by the "s" of ç. And no, I don't think this name change is going to happen – we prefer names that you can actually read, none of this neo-1337 buisness. If you ask for "ApocalypX" you have a better chance – I'm not going to say it will, as it's the admin's decision, but it's certainly more likely than your gibberish. How do you propose to type that into Special:Userlogin, anyway? phlip TC 04:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Most people who use a standard English-language keyboard (which includes the vast majority of HRWiki users) prefer that other users' names be easy to read and, especially, easy to type. Therefore, the best names use only letters (and, occasionally, numbers and symbols) from the standard ASCII character set. Non-Latin or Unicode-only characters are really frowned upon, and even characters in the extended Latin 1 character set can be a hassle. (We overlook it in cases like Heimstern Läufer because (1) his name actually means something and (2) it would be grammatically incorrect otherwise.) All that to say, sorry, we're not gonna change your name to that mess. — It's dot com 04:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Aww. It's would be pronounced "ApocalypX". Drat. Count X Talk Email 05:55, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Homestar is wicked!

Can I change mine too Homestar101 please? If it hasn't already been used. I'm from the HRWiki Fanstuff site, so it may not work.

I will be happy to make the change, but you have to request it while you're logged in. If you don't have an account on the knowledge base, then edit your fanstuff user page or talk page with something like "I want to change my name to Homestar101." — It's dot com 17:24, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Uhhhh... no. --Sam Goldfish 21:19, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, you see, normally we don't have a problem renaming a person once, say from User:A to User:B. If, however, you want to go from B to C (or back to A), then you need to provide some kind of good reason for all the switching. — It's dot com 20:43, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Just about everywhere else, I'm still known as "Trogga". --Sam Goldfish 17:00, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Regarding the search problem here and with the one above, it appears that the system is "helpfully" automatically capitalizing the first letter for us, making it impossible to directly search for a name that begins with a lowercase character.
