It appears the page still has the wiki's old favicon (which I guess we make like our current one except...green?), and that it states the site is hosted by Goleman Networks, which we don't say anymore according to the wiki's footer. What is with that, anyway? I understand that FellowSites is hosted by you developers/proprietors of HRWiki, but...did we have FellowSites while we were still saying it was hosted by Goleman Networks? {{User:Soiled Bargains/sig}} 23:29, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

== MODE #hrwiki-rc -n? ==
 +
 +
While I do understand that you will do what ever it takes so that only the recent changes bot's messages are the only thing in the channel, the fact that we can't change our nicks in #hrwiki-rc somewhat annoys me. My internet connection ever since I got a new ISP has caused occasional disconnections, and most of them occur away from my computer. These result in ghost nicks that time-out shortly after I reconnect, but then Colloquy can't change my nick for me on freenode since I'm in #hrwiki-rc. It seems that the channel only has about five to seven people in it at any time anyway; it shouldn't be a problem if you set the channel mode to -n. I know this request may seem a little unnecessary, but this is just one of those rare things that easily get on my nerves. Please and thank you. Also, Merry Christmas everyone! {{User:Soiled Bargains/sig}} 00:51, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
 +
:I agree that it's annoying. (I'm assuming you mean -m, not -n.) There really should be a mode that prevents talking but still allows nick changes. Still, we prefer the mode be set the way it is so that we don't have to worry about moderating the channel. My advice is not to idle in the channel and join it only when you're at your computer. All of the information the channel provides is readily available using [[Special:RecentChanges]], so you won't be missing anything. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 06:17, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
 +
:: I hadn't looked at freenode's list of channel modes, I assumed that the +n stood for no nick changes as it does for another network I know of. While I will follow your advice, why not instead do a quiet ban on everyone, with HRWikiRC being one of the only few exceptions (the others being ops)? {{User:Soiled Bargains/sig}} 05:33, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
 +
:::I noticed my mistake earlier, but now I can't help but correct myself so that I don't look like a novice IRC user. +n is a channel mode that denies messages/notices from clients that are not in the channel. This is defined in [http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1459 RFC1459], which was the first IRC standard. Channel and user mode characters defined in this Request For Comment should never be repurposed or removed, or else you're looking at a stupidly-designed IRC daemon that's going to break a lot of compatibility with clients and bots, which is what freenode's old IRCd did to at least +m. What I was referring to was an extended ban. Extended bans add more functionality to the +b nick!user@host mode by adding different syntaxes and types of bans to the +b channel mode, which don't break any guidelines in RFC1459 at all. When I said +n in my original post, I was referring to the "n" extended ban that's found in (at least) UnrealIRCd3.2, which disallows a user to change nicknames while on the affected channel. This is done by setting +b ~n:nick!user@host. freenode's current IRCd, which is based on Charybdis, now supports extended bans with a similar syntax, but doesn't support a nick change extended ban. Oh, and "MODE #hrwiki-rc -n" is the correct raw command. Using a colon gets it misinterpreted: MODE #hrwiki-rc :+v HRWiki-RC would treat every character as a mode character, even the space. {{User:Soiled Bargains/sig}} 03:31, 2 August 2011 (UTC), last edited 03:53, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Banned?

Whenever I try to log on to the IRC channel, it says that I am banned. Did I do something wrong? I hope not, because I was only on it once and barely did anything. I am connecting to the #hrnet IRC channel fine, so it isn't my client. So can you help me out? (=Pixelated=)

What's your nick? Your IP address? -- Tom 04:46, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, my nick is Pixelated or pixelated and my IP changes constantly, so there is no real way of telling. (=Pixelated=)

Try going to IPChicken.com. To unban you we'll need your IP and possibly the name of your service provider. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 23:53, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Site notice template

I created a template for the Monday scheduled chat site notice, Template:scheduledchat:

Come join us right now in the Homestar Runner Wiki chat channel!
Scheduled chat Mondays and Fridays · 2–6pm Pacific · 5–9pm Eastern · 2100–0100 UTC

Any thoughts on how it is worded? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:19, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

I like it! That looks pretty cool. «Rob» 10:06, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Time?

Does everyone agree Monday would be the best day of the week? I'm thinking of widening the time out to an hour earlier and an hour later (i.e. 2-6pm Pacific, etc). How does that sound? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 00:16, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, Monday is probably the best

Brit and Aussie chats?

I don't want to leave our international friends out of the loop here. Do we have enough Brits and Aussies to set up more convenient scheduled chats for them as well? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 04:10, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

I haven't figured out how to word it concisely, but we should note that 5–9 pm ET is 21:00–1:00 UTC during Daylight Time, 22:00–2:00 UTC during standard time. — It's dot com 05:04, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
I don't know whether there are many people overseas missing out, but the times scheduled at the moment is 7 AM to 11 AM on a Tuesday for Australian Eastern Standard Time (or 6.30 - 10.30 for Central Standard Time, or 5 AM to 9 AM for Western Standard Time). And daylight savings is plus one hour. I'm think we should just change "GMT" to "UTC", because GMT is one hour ahead of UTC in the summer. I'm going to create a little table with the time in different timezones. And this thing is useful for figuring out times on different timezones. «Rob» 10:06, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

I realize Rainer put a lot of effort into the time zone table, but it's incorrect. It lists the times for New York as 4:00pm–8:00pm, with a note (way down at the bottom) that you should add an hour in the summer. But this is not true—If I read correctly what Joey wrote, then it will always be 5–9pm ET, regardless of whether the U.S. is currently observing Daylight Saving Time. Therefore, one could say that the schedule is based on current continental American time, not Universal Time (UTC). In other words, the chat is from 21:00 to 1:00 when the United States is observing Daylight Time, 22:00 to 2:00 when it is not. Americentric, maybe, but true nevertheless. — It's dot com 15:03, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps this creates extra work down the road, but we could scrap the notes at the bottom, correct the table for current conditions, and update the table each time daylight savings changes occur. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 15:36, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
I did away with the coplicated table. (Sorry, Rainer.) In its place there's a link to the World Time Server, which will let users quickly and easily choose their time zone to figure the start time. The link is dynamic, so it should always give accurate information no matter what the time of year (with the small exception already noted on the page). I also simplified which U.S. time zones were listed on the page to just Eastern/Pacific, since it's less cluttered, and I think most people are used to that from TV anyway. — It's dot com 18:01, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Thoroughly Confused!!!

I'm a Mac-user, and none of these IRC clients have a program for Mac. I'm sickeningly horrible with computers, so I have no clue how to get any of this up and running. Whenever I use the chat without a client, it says it can't connect! Can someone help me out here please? -- Homeschool Winner 00:16, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:IRC#Clients lists a number of clients for Macintosh. Hope this helps you get connected. We'd love to see you in the channel. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 03:47, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Should we list Gaim as working on Macs? It does, but not in a user-friendly manner off a download from the Gaim page. — jqubed (talk) 04:59, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi! If you notice the Gaim entry under IRC clients already mentions that it works in several platforms, and lists mac as one of them. I think this should be sufficient. There are other Mac clients now listed that you can try if you're looking for one. --Stux 05:58, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Well, I meant not listing Gaim as working on Mac OS X. According to their FAQ it does work, but only if you compile it yourself and run it with a few other downloads. I was thinking it might be more confusing to people like the person who started this if we list something that requires a few more advanced actions on their part. — jqubed (talk) 16:24, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, while the steps required to install Gaim on OS X is meant for the more experienced user, that is not reason enough to remove the mention of it having mac support. The faq entry you provided mentions an alternate installation called Adium. I have linked to Adium's home page from the Mac entry for gaim. This should be sufficient for the novice user. Thanks! --Stux 17:51, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
Oh crap! I was reading through Adium's FAQ and it turns out they don't support IRC. If someone developed a plug-in it would be a zinch, but no one has. The only other thing I could think of would be to mention that it is not for novice users. There are other options there too I think users might be likely to pick first, like Colloquy? --Stux 18:07, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
That sounds like a good plan to me. I guess if someone on here who uses a Mac could suggest which one they prefer, we mightGet a recommendation... yeah, I stirred this up without being a Mac user... I just use Gaim and initially thought it wasn't offered for Macs... — jqubed (talk) 23:00, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
I added a "disclaimer" of sorts. Although i'm not sure if that's the best way to word it of if it really needs to be there at all. I does, however, try to address your concern. --Stux 03:48, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

On the current scheduling

While it may not have been much of a problem when we were all out of school, Monday nights are now less optimal than other nights, inasmuch as everyone requires their sleep on that night in preparation for Tuesday. However, I'm not here to state the obvious. My proposition is that we change the formal chat party night to Friday. In addition to the length everyone can stay up, another point still stands: on a Monday, one has to not only get to sleep on time, but do homework. On Friday, one can do homework or save it for the weekend. As such, Friday would probably be a much more ideal night for the parties. I'd hope that I share this belief with others... if you do, share that below, please. Oh, and forgot to note: this is not to say that Monday night parties are not of any sense, they can still be held. I merely am asking that a chat party be held on Friday nights, as well. Suicune64 19:07, 11 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Wasn't the original intent of the chat channel to discuss Monday updates? Nonetheless, that's the last thing we ever talk about in there anymore. I'm all up for moving it to Friday. —FireBird|Talk 19:11, 11 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Sure, I can't be there every Friday, but at least more than Monday. EDSMILDE
In keeping with the original intent, I'd like to keep holding scheduled chats on Mondays, but I have nothing against holding them on Fridays as well, and it seems logical. We've had more people in the channel lately, so bringing the scheduled chats up to twice weekly sounds like a good idea. I'll go ahead and update the sitenotice template and the IRC channel page accordingly. See you in the channel! — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 22:23, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)
That would work great for me, seeing as it would start 7AM Saturday for me, and I can only go on the computer at that time on weekends. «Rob» 07:07, 7 Oct 2005 (UTC)

A suggestion in light of circumstances

It seems to me as if the chat parties have lost something recently... the sort of comraderie once had in said gatherings is now drowned and diluted by the influx of *ahem* newer persons. This coincides with the beginning of the consistency of the usage of the wiki-wide notice about the chat parties. It helps not that the notice gathers the intention of the newcomers from HR.net, those well-intentioned and those not so. At present rate, regardless of their origin, it attracts the eye of a many who think it most amusing to simply be annoying idiots. In favour of the notice's removal? Not in favour? If in favour, please say so, and if not in favour, please say why. Thanks, Suicune64 22:21, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to have to agree with Suicune on this one. Just the other day we had three impersonating trolls online. And I should hope that none of them were from this website. — Lapper (talk) 11:35, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm in favor. Today's scheduled chat starts in about 5 minutes, and I'm not going to advertise it. We'll see how this goes. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:50, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

fanstuff channel

Homesar999, I appreciate your enthusiasm and desire to be impact the hr community, but please understand that since it is not officially a part of the wiki, it doesn't really belong in this page at this point in time. Perhaps at a future time it might be more appropriate to do so, but not right now. However, I am not an admin of the wiki and if the administration deems it proper to include it then it will be done. --Stux 01:15, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Unless the specific conditions Joey spelled out on his talk page were met, it would indeed not be proper. — It's dot com 01:24, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
My IRC channel (which was in use) predates Joey's by two months. Also, Joey was unbanned. I'm reverting, thank you. Also, I'd also appreciate that you don't talk to me like a newbie. --Homsar999
I don't think they were talking to you like a "newbie", but rather just clearing up the situation. No one was trying to offend you in away. Homestramy20|Talk 06:55, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Do not include #fanstuff on this page. Continued addition of such a link, despite explicit instructions not to do so, would seem like an effort to disrupt the Wiki. Please stop. Consider this your final warning, Homsar999. -- Tom 17:57, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Disrupting the wiki? You'd be pissed off, too, Tom, if you created a channel for a wiki 2 months before, then it was recreated and listed. (I realize it was created by JoeyDay, but my channel has been around longer, and deserves some recognition. --Homsar999
Homsar, there would be a huge difference if Tom opened the channel. In fact, Tom originally opened the #hrwiki channel. The difference is Tom is an admin and has some authority around here to open official channels. You on the other hand, are not an admin and have no authority to open anything official. It doesn't matter whose channel has been around longer. I've opened the #hrwiki-fanstuff channel as the official Fanstuff Wiki channel and that's the end of discussion. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:49, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Nope, I mean like making different type of font colors and such. Bassium! m OCE

I can't help you much, but I do know this: in the old days IRC used to have two colors: black, and white (or black and amber, or orange and black... you get the idea!) Then came this little chat program that became popular called mIRC and they decided one day to add colors to chat rooms! They were quite popular and many ppl used funky codes to display colors. You had to use mIRC to select them and see them as well. Wether that has become an IRC standard since then, I do not know. If it has, then that is where it comes from, if not, well... I cannot help you further. Good luck! --Stux 07:39, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
An easy way that you could display the text in different colors is by holding down Ctrl, then K. After that, add a number, from 1-16. You can also display a background by typing the # that represents the color of the font, a comma, then the # that represents the color of the background.

Example: Ctrl, K(a strange sign will appear) - now type in 2,4(with no spaces involved) - in this case, the 2 is representing the font color, which would show up blue. Now, the 4 is representing the background color, which would show up red.

Now, i'm not positive which number represents which color, so you'll just have to mess around and fuigure that out yourself. Homestramy20|Talk 07:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

This means the IRC server did not accept the username (User ID) settings. In the error message it shows the part it did not like between the [ ] brackets. Most probably there is at least one character in there that the server didn't like. We'll have to make sure to remove all strange characters from the User ID, like that period. TriviaTime?

Two TriviaTime related questions:

  1. Should we link the #hrwiki-trivia channel as well, even though it's only usable when Joey's on (and has the time)?
  2. Should we have a weekly trivia session at the same times as the scheduled chat? - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
My plan is to make the #hrwiki-trivia channel more public as soon as I've got TriviaTime on a computer that can be connected to the net 24/7. I'm looking into the possibility of getting an old PC from WGU, so sit tight for a few days and TriviaTime might be a permanent fixture in the channel. Then we can look into officially acknowledging the channel here and adding it as an option on the web-based interface. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 06:33, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Grood! I hope you're able to get the PC. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)
I've modified the code of the chat.hrwiki.org site slightly. If you'd like to be able to use it to join the #hrwiki-trivia channel, Simply enter it from this link: http://chat.hrwiki.org?trivia=true. That last part ("trivia=true") is a variable that tells the page to add the trivia channel to the list of choices. As noted above, the trivia channel will eventually be one of the permanent choices, but this gives everyone a way to get to it in the interrim. Let me know if you encounter any difficulty using this. Thanks. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 18:54, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Topic Lock

Could someone with chanop powers please /mode +t #HrWiki... ChanServ's topiclock isn't perfect - it merely reverts the changes that are made but people still mess around with it. Plus everyone goes crazy with topic changing every time there's a netsplit and ChanServ leaves... Mode +t would have the same effect, but would be a lot cleaner. --phlip TC 16:21, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

It's certainly a shame that it has to come to this. I'm disappointed that people mess around with it and aren't capable of just leaving it alone. -- Tom 19:12, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Why don't we have a link to #hrnet also on the page?--H*Bad 04:47, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Because you are currently surfing on HRWiki.org, not HomestarRunner.net. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 07:27, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
You mean... beta.homestarrunner.com? It's still Homestar Runner related.--H*Bad 00:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
No, I'm pretty sure he means homestarrunner.net. -- Tom 00:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
On the channel it says: "Topic for #hrnet is “Homestar Runner Network: http://beta.homestarrunner.net”"--H*Bad 00:58, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes. Homestarrunner.net. -- Tom 01:12, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
They are different url addresses, since one does not link to the other one. So this doesn't lead into a long conversation. #hrnet is Homestar Runner related correct?--H*Bad 04:10, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
It's dot net, not dot com. In my reply to your 00:47 comment, I told you it was dot net. You had dot com, which is not correct. -- Tom 07:36, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
You know, it seems to me you guys are talking all around the issue. The reason that there's a link to the fanstuff IRC is because it's an official sister-wiki to this one. The reason there's no link to, say, #hrnet, is because there's no official relationship between that project and this one. In fact, the only reason we link to these IRC's at all is because they are the "official" IRC channels of the wikis. And that is simply it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:03, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for acually answering the question. And what do you mean by, "you guys"?--H*Bad 12:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
That would be referring to you, Tom, and E.L. Cool; those who were talking around the issue. — Lapper (talk) 13:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Caps

Any Reason this article has a lowercase "c" in channel? The Joe (Talk | contribs) 22:38, 2 January 2007 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Good catch. Loafing 22:44, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Ummm...What about the External links toolbox on the left? Shouldn't that be changed? Bluebry 22:45, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
While the link needs to be changed, the caption shouldn't. Loafing 22:48, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
The title of this page is not title case probably so that it matches its entry in the sidebar, which is "Chat channel", which in turn matches things like
"Recent changes"
"Random page"
"What links here"
"Related changes"
"Upload file"
"Special pages"
"Official site"
"User's guide"
"Strong Bad Email" and "The Stick" are title case for other reasons, but I don't see a reason for this to be title case. -- Tom 22:51, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I agree. I admit I'm biased, in that I don't like title case for articles, either, but it seems especially out of place on a project page like this one. Heimstern Läufer 22:57, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, same. I think it needs to go back to lowercase c. Bluebry 22:58, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Hm... Now that I think about it, title case is a little pointless for this article specifically. Lowercase C, I think. - link_icon.gifThe Joe(Talk) 23:03, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Definitely. There's no point to having it uppercase. — Lapper (talk) 23:11, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I think it should uppercase for consistency's sake. Otherwise, we'd need guidelines as to when whe have uppercase titles and when we don't. And that would make everything unnecessarily complicated. Having said that, I can live with it being lowercase (because I secretly don't like uppercase titles either ;-) ). Loafing 23:16, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

#hrwiki-RC

I'm curious what #hrwiki-RC is and whatever it is, I can connect to it but I "Cannot Send to Channel" --Dacheatbot · Communicate 06:12, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

The recent changes appear in that channel as they are made, but sending messages is purposefully disabled so that conversation doesn't interfere with users' ability to read the edit summaries. Hope this helps, Trey56 06:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Problematic...

I can't enter because it says my name is invalid. Homsar R. — 69.111.133.136 (Talk | contribs) 01:14, 18 February 2007 (left unsigned)

You should still be able to log on to IRC, as your client should give you a legal name. Make sure there are no spaces in your name. Loafing 01:23, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Your nickname on freenode (the server we use for our IRC channel) can only be:
  1. At most 16 characters long
  2. Only made up of letters, numbers, and a handful of symbols: []{}_\|`~
    • Note that spaces aren't allowed, and nor are parentheses () or normal quotes '" – just the strange brackets []{} and backquotes `
  3. Cannot start with a number
If your nick fits these 3 rules it should work fine (unless someone else is using it on the network, but the client should give a different error message if that happens). --phlip TC 11:14, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Does any of this still work?

Just wondering. I can't connect to irc.freenode.net or chat.freenode.net. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 05:57, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

chat.hrwiki.org sometimes doesn't work for me either... you might have better luck at java.freenode.net (it's the same applet, but it runs on the freenode servers, so you don't get the security warning). --phlip TC 06:06, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

#hrwiki-RC problems...

The bot that posts the Recent Changes isn't in the channel somehow. Is this supposed to happen? --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 22:19, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Sometimes strange things happen on the server, or on the IRC network, and it dies, never to return... this, of course, invariably happens when I'm asleep, and it doesn't come back until I go into the server and start it back up again... but it's back now. --phlip TC 01:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

My nickname!

When I try to log in it says my nickname is already in use when I am me!-MikeControl (From the fanstuff)

Use a different name. Your old name was still there because you never officially disconnected, but it's gone now. Shwoo 04:42, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
That happens to me all the time. If you've registered the nickname, after you come in with a different name like Shwoo said, you can ghost it. Just say /msg nickserv ghost (nick) (password) and the "ghost" of your nick will log off. Then you can say /nick (name) to change your name back to what it should be. xD Hope I helped! CompGrl323 (talk · edits) 02:18, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
"ghost" command works also perfectly well on people that pretend to be you. :D --Sysrq868 21:29, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Wii Compatibility

Can my Flash Player 7-compatible Opera browser on my internet-enabled Wii be able to access the IRC (at chat.hrwiki.org)? SuperfieldCreditUnion

Why don't you just try it? -- Tom 06:25, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Hmm...I see a sea of white. I guess a Wii can't do IRC. :( SuperfieldCreditUnion
Just a note: chat.hrwiki.org is a Java applet, not flash. Also, chat.hrwiki.org is a very easy way to join the chat, but any IRC client can be used. So, if it doesn't work on the Wii, you might be able to find a different one that does.  Green Helmet 00:16, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
I have done some Googling and have found a couple result for Flash clients, but they apparently are in compressed files and not direct SWFs themselves. And I have no idea what was made with what version of Flash right now. I know WyldRyde's IRC uses a Flash client for page embeds, but I think it was made with a later version of flash, not to mention it's made for WyldRyde only. --68.92.250.78 01:00, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
I might have found one...http://mibbit.com/. Would that work? SuperfieldCreditUnion
Doesn't hurt to try it. I saw that one too, and it's possible, if the Wii browswer supports the needed javascript and the people who wrote it don't do anachronistic and silly browser detection to determine compatibility. You should pick Freenode.net (which is on that dropdown list, it's under "General"). The real question is, how on earth are you going to chat with a WiiMote? ;)  Green Helmet 01:30, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Newer versions of the Wii's software and the Internet Channel supports newer USB keyboards. However, even then you have a problem. You'll need to do this in order to get one message up (unless the Internet Channel does something special with the keyboard once it's detected):
  • Move yourself with a Wii Remote in hand to where you can get the Wii's cursor show up and to click into the message box. This will make the virtual keyboard appear which in turn will cover the IRC Client, in this case Mibbit.
  • Move back down ground level to enter your message with the keyboard, and hit enter to send it. Now you'll see (most) messages, depending on activity of the channel, that you missed while you typed the message.
  • Repeat
So, really, it's just a bunch of getting up and down unless you're in a chair or have the sensor bar to where its easily usable. But even then it has its drawbacks. I didn't even think about this, Green Helmet! --68.92.250.78 01:50, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
I got a USB keyboard cheap for specific use for my Wii, and I already do so much typing on it, what with how often I go on the wiki, that it isn't a problem. But I am happy that I can do IRC on my Wii. SuperfieldCreditUnion

I know that this conversation is terribly outdated, but what do I choose in the drop down menu? Neither General nor Freenode is on the list. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 00:12, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Ah. You probably figured it out by now, but for anyone who's wondering the same, Freenode has banned the use Mibbit. I'm afraid that off of the top of my head I can't think of any alternatives. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 21:52, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Bad User Info

People have been asking me for months now to join the IRC channel, but when I log in, I automatically get disconnected because of "Bad user info". Is there anything I can do to fix it, or should a sysop fix it? BBG 23:30, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

You need to work on your bug reports. What have you already tried? What are the exact steps you're taking? Are you using the chat.hrwiki.org Java applet or some other IRC client? Is your browser set to accept cookies? What happens when you use a browser other than the one you normally use or a different client? What happens when you use computer other than the one you normally use? — It's dot com 18:00, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm using chat.hrwiki.org. I can't get it to work on any computer. BBG 18:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I recommend using an IRC client instead if you can't get the Java applet to run. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 18:32, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes. There are several good ones out there (see the project page) that are easy to set up and use. If you're dead set against that, another online choice is mibbit.com. (Incidentally, you didn't say what steps you're actually taking.) — It's dot com 19:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I know of several computers that are unable to run the Java applet. The one I'm using can't show emoticons, but runs fine. At my dad's office, I have to use AlmsIRC, but it works fine. Try AlmsIRC or a client and see how that works. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 21:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I found your problem, Bad Bad Guy. I tested your username in the Java client, and I got the same result for your name. You need to have underscores instead of spaces. Bad Bad Guy fails, but Bad_Bad_Guy will work. Hope this helps. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 23:26, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
That worked perfectly well. Now if only I had something to say! BBG 23:35, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
What's your nickname gonna be? I can't find you. MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 23:41, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
You probably can't find me because I logged out already. My nickname will be the same as my Wiki and Forum nickname. BBG 23:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Scheduled Chats

I asked It's dot com which channel we had the scheduled chats on and he said that he wasn't aware we still had them. So do we? Coach z's cool 20:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Nope. It's just show up, see who's around, chat. — Defender1031*Talk 20:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Unable to log in

Same thing here. I tried "Strong Vader" and it said I was banned from the #hrwiki channel. Not the others.

OK, I just noticed that this talk thread is four years old, but I have a problem. Strong Vader 01:25, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

[So start a new thread. Remove this message and replace it with more details. Are you really using a space? (You can't.) You really can join other channels?]

Another invalid username error

I, too, get the invalid username error every time I try to connect. I'm not using any special characters other than letters, and I've tried a couple different usernames on many different occasions. On a hunch, I also tried changing the username while already in, but it doesn't let me because I'm not connected. Hagurumon 01:12, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I need more information than this. How are you trying to connect? Using the Java client or something else? What are the exact steps you're taking? What exact username are you using? — It's dot com 01:45, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm using the Java, as I have no idea how any of that IRC stuff works. Basically all I'm doing is leaving the preset options as they are, typing in my username (Hagurumon) and hitting the button to connect. I've been able to connect successfully in the past, but that was probably well over a year ago. Also, back when I connected successfully, I registered my username. Don't know if you needed that info or not, but the more info the better, I guess. Hagurumon 01:52, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
I was able to log in using that name without any problems. Whatever it is appears to be on your end. Have you tried another computer? Is all your software up to date? Maybe you're entering an illegal character without realizing it. — It's dot com 02:17, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I've tried two different computers, because one malfunctioned Strong Bad-style and we had to get a new one. Plus I've tried both Internet Explorer and Google Chrome as browsers. Very curious indeed. :s Hagurumon 02:23, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

chat.hrwiki.org favicon outdated

It appears the page still has the wiki's old favicon (which I guess we make like our current one except...green?), and that it states the site is hosted by Goleman Networks, which we don't say anymore according to the wiki's footer. What is with that, anyway? I understand that FellowSites is hosted by you developers/proprietors of HRWiki, but...did we have FellowSites while we were still saying it was hosted by Goleman Networks? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 23:29, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Standardizing the favicons is something we do plan to get around to sooner or later. — It's dot com 04:51, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

MODE #hrwiki-rc -n?

Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 00:51, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

I agree that it's annoying. (I'm assuming you mean -m, not -n.) There really should be a mode that prevents talking but still allows nick changes. Still, we prefer the mode be set the way it is so that we don't have to worry about moderating the channel. My advice is not to idle in the channel and join it only when you're at your computer. All of the information the channel provides is readily available using Special:RecentChanges, so you won't be missing anything. — It's dot com 06:17, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
I hadn't looked at freenode's list of channel modes, I assumed that the +n stood for no nick changes as it does for another network I know of. While I will follow your advice, why not instead do a quiet ban on everyone, with HRWikiRC being one of the only few exceptions (the others being ops)? Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 05:33, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I noticed my mistake earlier, but now I can't help but correct myself so that I don't look like a novice IRC user. +n is a channel mode that denies messages/notices from clients that are not in the channel. This is defined in RFC1459, which was the first IRC standard. Soiled Bargains (talk|ctrb) 03:31, 2 August 2011 (UTC), last edited 03:53, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
That's... amazing info? Anyway you should be happy to note that it is now possible (and has been for a while) to change nicks while in that channel. — It's dot com 04:33, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't work.
