"Believe it or not, I'm walking around. I never thought I could trick-or-tre-e-eat..."

During the Halloween toons, the characters within the Homestar Runner body of work dress up in costumes in which to go 'trick or treating'. More often than not, such costumes are of an icon or celebrity from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. As a result, at least one character per toon occasionally speaks in dialogue or lines (or moves around) in such a way that somehow pertains to his/her respective costume.

Contents

Occurrences

Homestarloween Party

  • Coach Z — Dressed as Flavor Flav of the rap group Public Enemy; Homestar comments on his costume by saying, "Coach Z is down with the PE". This is a reference to the group's song, "Burn Hollywood Burn", wherein guest-rapper Ice Cube raps "Ice Cube is down with the PE".
  • Homestar Runner — Dressed as Kurt Cobain, his T-shirt reads, "Corporate rock still sucks", which is the motto of SST Records, one of Cobain's favorite record labels.
  • The Cheat — Dressed as Garfield, he holds his teddy bear, Pooky, which is actually Garfield's own teddy bear.

The House That Gave Sucky Treats

  • Coach Z — Dressed as Humpty Hump, the rap he performs is from Digital Underground's hit song, "The Humpty Dance," only Coach Z substitutes his own name for Humpty's.
  • Marzipan — Dressed as Joey Ramone of the punk rock group, The Ramones, she says, "Hey ho, let's go!" This is part of the lyrics to their song, "Blitzkrieg Bop", and also both a reference and tribute to Joey after he died earlier in 2001.
  • Homsar — Dressed as Popeye comic strip character, J. Wellington Wimpy, who really adores hamburgers, he says, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for some candy today." This is a parody of Wimpy's catch phrase, "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
  • Strong Bad — Dressed as Carmen Sandiego, he says, "Where in the world is my candy?" This is a reference to the computer game and TV show that features Carmen, "Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"
  • Strong Sad — Dressed as Andy Warhol, if you give him the can of Campbell's Soup as his treat, he comments on it as being relevant to what he is dressed as. This is a reference to one of Warhol's most famous paintings, which is of the can of Campbell's Soup, as well as his monotone, deadpan voice, which Strong Sad also has.
  • Bubs — Dressed as Mars Blackmon from She's Gotta Have It, his intro at the door is "Please baby, please baby, baby baby please", a reference to Mars' exact same line from that movie.
  • Homestar Runner — Dressed as The Greatest American Hero, his trick-or-treating intro is a spoof on the show's theme song.

Pumpkin Carve-nival

  • The King of Town — Dressed as famous video game character Mario, he comments that he is a video game (which Marzipan wouldn't know, since she doesn't play video games). Later, after Homestar (or rather, Strong Bad dressed up as Homestar) gives him a worst prize, he laments, "Sorry, king, but our princess is in another castle." This is a reference to the first Super Mario Bros. game, in which, after clearing each level (prior to the eighth and final level), the mushroom people Mario saves say, "Thank you, Mario. But our princess is in another castle!" The Super Kingio Bros., an Easter egg at the end, directly mirrors Level 1-1 from Super Mario Bros.
  • Strong Mad — Dressed as a ghost, he says something that ghosts would commonly say: "Boo!"

3 Times Halloween Funjob

  • The King of Town — Dressed as the Hamburglar, he says that he is "dressed to 'hamburgle'" and even utters the Hamburglar's catch phrase, "Robble-robble!"
  • Stinkoman — Dressed as Speed Racer, he declares that he's "a demon on wheels". This is directly lifted from the show's theme song, which also describes the title protagonist as "a demon on wheels".
  • Strong Mad — Dressed as Magnum P.I., he bellows "Higgins!", who is actually Tom Selleck's boss on that show.
  • Strong Sad — Dressed as David Byrne, leader of new wave group Talking Heads, he says, "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!" These are lyrics from the song, "Once In a Lifetime," by Talking Heads.
  • The Poopsmith — Dressed as Street Fighter character, M. Bison, he performs a flaming maneuver. This is actually M. Bison's Psycho Crusher attack.

Halloween Fairstival

  • Strong Bad — Dressed as the Joker, he calls his posse his "bad pennies", which is what the Joker calls his henchmen. Later, at the end, he says, "Hello, kiddies, a-meet the Joker!". Also note the white moustache, a trade mark of the original actor who refused to shave his off so the producers just painted over it instead.
  • The King of Town — Dressed as the Mayor of Halloweentown from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, he turns his head around to show a second face with a blue tint and sad expression. The Mayor in the movie changes his face around when his mood changes.
  • Homsar — Dressed as Kumar from the movie Bottle Rocket, he says one of the character's most famous lines, "I blew it, man! I lose my touch!"
  • Homestar Runner — Dressed as Carl Spackler from the movie Caddyshack, Homestar comments, "So I got that going for me. Which is nice." This was a line spoken by Spackler in that movie.
  • Marzipan — Dressed as Willie Nelson; Strong Bad notices this by saying to her, "Hey Marzi, I just can't wait for you to get on the road again... and get hit by a schoolbus." The first part of this line is a reference to the Willie Nelson song "On the Road Again".

Halloween Potion-ma-jig

  • Homestar Runner — Dressed as Moocher from the movie Breaking Away, he wears a T-shirt that reads "Cutters", which is a bicyclist group that Moocher is a member of.
  • Pom Pom — Dressed as Walter Sobchak from the movie The Big Lebowski, if you select the second option when Homestar meets Pom Pom and Coach Z, Pom Pom will show Homestar a severed toe, which is referenced in this movie.
  • Coach Z — Dressed as Theo Huxtable from The Cosby Show, he wears the shirt that Theo wore in "A Shirt Story", one of the earliest episodes on the show.
  • The King of Town — Dressed as Colonel Sanders, if you select the second option when Homestar meets the King of Town and the Poopsmith, the King of Town's ingredient that Homestar gets is Sanders' secret blend of eleven herbs and spices, which is used in Sanders' recipe for chicken at KFC. In the same option scene, Homestar calls the King of Town, "Your Kentucky Fried-ness".
  • Homsar — Dressed as Tingle from the Legend of Zelda series, he throws confetti and is also seen floating on a balloon, both of which Tingle does frequently.
  • Strong Bad — Dressed as Jambi the Genie from Pee-wee's Playhouse, he says to The Cheat about Homestar, "Meka-leka-hi-meka-The Cheat, throw a TV on him...ho." This is a reference to Jambi's favorite incantation, "Meka-leka-hi-meka-hiney-ho." Later, when asked of what he is supposed to be, Strong Bad says he's Jambi and even says another of the character's signature lines to prove it: "Wish? Did somebody say 'wish'?"
  • The Cheat — Dressed as Toad from the Mario series, the high jump he does is the same one that Toad does when he gets hit in Mario Kart 64, in which Toad's kart also lands with a POOMP. The Cheat also makes some sounds similar to what Toad says when he wins a race ("I'm the best!") as well as Toad's cries when he has been hit.
  • Strong Sad — Dressed as a member of Devo, Strong Sad says "Go forward! Move ahead. Try to detect it! It's not too late." These are lyrics from Devo's 1980 hit, "Whip it".
  • Marzipan — Dressed as Muppet character Beaker, she says various squeak-like "meeps" that Beaker does (rather like The Cheat).

Happy Hallow-day

  • Strong Bad — Dressed as Father Guido Sarducci, he tells Homestar that his being dressed up as a pretend priest-comedian prevents him from beating Homestar up. This "priest-comedian" is played by Don Novello on Saturday Night Live.
  • The Cheat — Dressed as Gizmo from the movie Gremlins, when he's told by Strong Sad that he should technically be turning into a horrible beastie by sunlight, he covers his eyes and makes noises that sound like he's saying Gizmo's line, "Bright lights! Bright lights!"
  • Coach Z — Dressed as Queen Latifah, his costume specifically depicts the person he is portraying as she appeared as a guest on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in which she played an actress who hired Hilary Banks as an assistant and who took a liking to Will Smith.

Jibblies 2

  • Strong Mad — Dressed as Nikolai Volkoff, he says he forgot his Ruskie flag (in this case, the flag of the Soviet Union). Volkoff was known for entering the ring carrying a Soviet flag.
  • Homestar Runner — Dressed as Artie the Strongest Man In the World, he calls himself "the strongest man... in the world!" in imitation of Artie's catchphrase.
  • Marzipan — Dressed as Prince, when she succumbs to the Jibblies, Homestar thinks she is playing Raspberry Beret, which was a hit for Prince in 1985. Later, Homestar refers to Marzipan as "The Girlfriend Formerly Known as Marzipan", a reference to one of Prince's nicknames, "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince."
  • Bubs — Dressed as Ross from You Can't Do That On Television, when Marzipan doesn't know what his costume is, some green slime pours all over Marzipan's head. On that show, whenever a cast member said the phrase "I don't know," green slime would pour from the ceiling onto their head.
  • The Poopsmith — Dressed as Doc Brown from Back to the Future, Homestar explains that "Where The Poopsmith's going, he doesn't need good smells," a reference to one of Doc's most famous quotes, "Where we're going, we don't need roads."
