Transcript

{Camera tilts down to reveal Homestar Runner calling on his cordless phone, sitting on Marzipan's couch.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hey, Pom Dog. It's Homedog. Yeah, dog. You wanna hang out? Oh? Oh. Firmware upgrade. No, that sounds important. No, it's cool. I'll catch you later. Boop! Oh.

{Homestar actually hangs up the phone. Reverse shot, with a list marked "Phone People". Pom Pom (Pom Dog) is crossed out. Homestar dials the phone.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Strong Bad? No? Cool.

{Homestar hangs up. Strong Bad's name is crossed off.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Bubs! In federal prison? {Homestar hangs up; white frame} Coach Z? In juvenile prison!?

{Homestar hangs up. Coach Z's name is crossed off the list. Increasing Dutch angle shots as Strong Sad and The Cheat are crossed off. Cut to Homestar lying on the couch.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {Disappointed} Nah, it's cool. I forgot today was you and Brunswick stew's anniversary. 'Kay. Bye.

{Homestar hangs up. King Of Town's name is crossed off. Homestar sighs off camera.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Oh, well, I guess I'll just have to call —

{Cut to Strong Mad opening the door.}

STRONG MAD: CAN HOMESTAR COME OUT AND PLAY?

{Title "Play Date" drops down over a black background as music plays.}

{Crossfade to Homestar leaning out the front door talking to Strong Mad.)

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Uh, we don't really call it "playing" anymore, Strong Mad. {Close-up of Homestar} It's more like hanging out, messing around, kicking back...

{Two shot of Homestar and Strong Mad}

STRONG MAD: LET'S FOOL AROUND!

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hm. Maybe not "fool around" either. {Close-up of Homestar} Why don't we get down to business? Let's play. Or, kick around. Whatever.

{Two shot}

STRONG MAD: LET'S PLAY BLOCKS!

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Blocks, eh? I'm not opposed to the classics. Let's play some blocks.

{Push wipe left to a tower of cinder blocks wavering slightly. Strong Mad grunts off camera and another cinder block flies to the top of the pile. Pull back to reveal Homestar pushed into the ground with the blocks on top of his chest.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {strained} You know, this is exactly what I thought you had in mind. {Close up on Homestar} Not sure why I agreed to it. How 'bout we play catch?

{Push wipe left to Homestar crouching slightly, his cap on backwards, and a baseball glove floating in front of him.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: All right! Fire it in here! Gimme the old pepper atta pepper whatta pepper who's a pepper— {Strong Mad grunts off camera and Bubs' Concession Stand lands on Homestar, who drops his glove} Oof!

{Bubs pops up in the Stand, music similar to the Senorial Day Sale plays in the background.}

BUBS: It's a relocation sale! Fifty percent off all badly beaten Homestars!

{Push wipe down to Homestar, with bandages on his head and face, and Strong Mad sitting on the couch.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: {shakily & sounding exhausted} Okay, Strong Mad. We're gonna have a little something I like to call "Migraine Time". We can play your new favorite game, {pull back to a wider shot} Feathers and Cotton. Ready? Go.

{Homestar puts an ice pack on his face. A meteor falls through the ceiling, crushing Homestar.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Waugh!

STRONG MAD: THIS ONE'S NOT MY FAULT!

{Nebulon pokes up from the meteor, looking around. Nebulon's sound effect is heard}

{Push wipe up Homestar heavily bandaged, legs in casts, and sitting in a wheelchair in The Field. Strong Mad is standing next to him, smiling apologetically.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Wow! I had a real great time messing around today, Strong Mad. But next time, maybe we should just play.

{Strong Bad enters from the left}

STRONG BAD: Hey, thanks for babysitting the little guy for me, Homestar.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: What?

STRONG MAD: AWWWW! TIME TO GO?

STRONG BAD: Yeah, sorry, man. {close-up of Strong Bad} Cinder blocks, structural damage, and meteors? It is definitely time for your nap.

{Pull back to previous shot. Strong Mad and Strong Bad exit left, Strong Mad pouting and sobbing a little.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Whew! Bubs, hit me with a Cold One! {Camera shift right to reveal Bubs' Concession Stand, as Homestar's wheel chair leans back. Bubs slides an 'Old One down the counter.}

{Cut to black. A crash is heard followed by a gulp.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Ahh. Thanks, man.

{"END" appears on the screen as music plays. A dot soon follows and the word back fades in the lower left corner.}

Easter Eggs

  • At the end, click on the "E" to continue the ending scene.
{scene reopens at the Concession Stand. The 'Old One bottle lies broken on the ground}
HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hey, wait a minute! Aren't you supposed to be in federal prison?
BUBS: I got time off for snitchy behavior!
  • At the end, click on the period to see The King of Town.
{At Marshmallow's L'est Stand. The music from Date Nite and love poems is playing. The King sits at one end of the table, with a bowl of Brunswick stew at the other end. A candle and small jewelry box are also on the table}

Fun Facts

Explanations

  • Fiftieth anniversaries are typically celebrated with the presentation of gold to one another.
  • A firmware upgrade is updating of software embedded on a hardware device such as a chip.

Trivia

  • This toon was not added to the Shorts menu until a week after its release.
  • Homestar's telephone uses dual-tone multi-frequency dialing and the numbers can therefore be determined from the tones produced. Homestar dials the following numbers:
    • 5-3-3 at the beginning of the toon before saying, "Hey Pom Dog..."
    • 8 after hanging up on Pom Pom.
    • 8-6-5-3-3 before talking to Strong Bad
    • 8 after hanging up on Strong Bad and before talking to Bubs.
    • 8 after hanging up on Bubs and before talking to Coach Z.
    • 8 after hanging up on Coach Z.
    • 5-3 before talking to the King of Town.
    • 8 after hanging up on the King of Town.

Remarks

  • Homestar crosses out the names on his list without using a writing utensil.
  • Bub's legs don't appear on the ground, despite the angle his concession stand is at.
  • At the end of the toon, Homestar appears to have both his legs injured from the meteor. However, his legs were the only parts of his body that were not hit by the meteor.
  • The large wheels of Homestar's wheelchair are not attached to the chair, or to each other.
  • In the Easter egg, Bubs' arms are in the older, bendy state.
  • When Strong Bad thanks Homestar, he calls Strong Mad "the little guy," despite the fact that Strong Mad is actually older than Strong Bad.
  • The word "END" appears to come down over the top of the first Easter Egg: in the last frame, you can see bottom half of the word at the top of the screen.
  • This is the first toon to show the new design of the bushes in the background of the Field.

Goofs

  • When Homestar's list first appears, The Poopsmith is listed after Strong Sad and The Cheat. However, after Homestar crosses out The Cheat, The Poopsmith is listed before The Cheat.
  • In the Concession Stand Easter egg, the left wall of the stand is separated from the front at the top.
  • In the beginning of the toon, Homestar is in Marzipan's house. However, when talking to Strong Mad while poking out the front door, the railing does not bend in an angle at the middle, like Marzipan's railing does. It is instead straight - exactly the way Homestar's house has been shown before.
  • When Strong Mad starts to sob at the end, his mouth doesn't move.
  • At the end of the toon, when Homestar asks for a Cold One, Bubs' Concession Stand seems to be tilted at a more obtuse angle than it was when it landed on Homestar, though this could have happened when it was removed from on top of him.
  • Before the Concession Stand lands on Homestar, he is facing right, in the direction that the stand comes from. However, when it actually falls on him, Homestar appears to turn around, as the positioning of his leg suggests it came at him from the front while he was facing to the left.

Inside References

Real-World References

  • Homestar Runner shouting about "peppering" is a reference to Bugs Bunny's similar shouting during Baseball Bugs after which Bugs grins and says, "That's the old pepper, boy!" This in turn is a reference to the common warm-up "pepper game" used before baseball games, where a coach hits a grounder or low fly to the infield, and the fielders try to field and throw back the ball as quickly as they can. The coach then hits the return throw.
  • Homestar's chatter starts to follow Dr Pepper's jingle from the 1970s and 1980s, "I'm a Pepper, He's a Pepper, We're a Pepper, Be a Pepper, Wouldn't you like to Be a Pepper too?"
