Ding! 1-Up is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Note: Stop making non-canon (not from the cartoons) additions to the 20X6 pages.--Hysterical Woman 13:41, 11 Dec 2004 (MST)

Name

When did TBC ever call him "1-up Extra Man"? Someone please provide a link to wherever they said this. --Clever Ben 17:47, 22 Dec 2004 (MST)

I've never seen TBC call him that, but "1up" is the entry immediately following "stinkoman" in weeklies.xml. -- Cyrius 20:43, 17 Jan 2005 (MST)
I've heard the fact before (a long time ago, in fact); that it is in weeklies.xml confirms it enough for my tastes. --Jay 20:46, 17 Jan 2005 (MST)
Where'd we get extraman from, though? --Gafaddict 22:15, 12 Mar 2005 (MST)

The games menu calls him "H", not 1-up. --198.37.16.25 15:06, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

Yet it also calls Stinkoman "SB". --Trogga 03:34, 31 Mar 2005 (MST)
About the last two messages, in the game menu when you change your ship it will turn into the regular character not the 20X6 counterpart. For example the Pom Pom capsule is orange not black and white like his 20X6 counterpart Pan Pan. So the menu only shows a pic of 20X6 caracters the rest is regular character related.Austio talk 00:44, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

His name is 1-Up. Play the 20X6 game, and you'll see that. --acekirby13 16:10, 23 Mar 2005 (MST)

I'm stumbling upon this conversation months later, but I see that nobody's really answered the question. Why, on the article page, is he called "1-Up the extra man" instead of just "1-Up"? Every time somebody tries to fix it, it gets reverted. The only reference to this I can find is one instance in the Stinkomanual, and that seems more like a throwaway line than anything. Can someone shed some light on this? — It's dot com 23:30, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've heard that he was called "1-Up Extraman" (minus the "the") in an interview, and I heard this LONG prior to 1-Up's official name debut in this game. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 23:34, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Okay, but where is this interview? Is there a transcript available to read? Even supposing it's true, does that make it canon? It seems like "1-Up the extra man" is like saying "Pan Pan the Giant Panda" or "Stinkoman the guy with blue hair". — It's dot com 23:52, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Frankly, I'm not sure which interview it is. I heard it long before Stinkoman (the game) came out, but second-hand. Still, it fits what is in this game. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 00:32, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Meh, it fits, sort of, but I still don't see how that isolated, Engrish-style reference elevates "the extra man" to be part of his name. — It's dot com 00:46, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You did not read my post, did you? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 00:47, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Anyway, this was the best that I could find, though I'm not sure it's the right interview (it refers to 1-Up by both names.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 00:56, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Didn't read your post? What? This coming from the person who doesn't read my STUFF votes?   ;)
I said that because I was talking about an interview, and you were still talking about the Stinkomanual. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:51, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
When I said "it fits, sort of", I was referring to the interview. My wording was awkward, because I moved on to the Stinkomanual without a good transition, and that was confusing. Still, it's a silly question to ask somebody if they read your post. :) — It's dot com 07:03, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
My apologies. I had trouble trying to figure out what you were saying - because, yeah, the wording was kinda awkward. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:21, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
No probalo. — It's dot com
Seriously, I read your post (and that interview), but maybe I was unclear, so I'll spell it out: Mike saying "It’s either Extra Man or One Up" fits with the line in the Stinkomanual; that is, I can see how the former inspired the latter, but I what I don't get is how an obscure, non-canon interview combined with an intentionally poorly written, uncapitalized, throwaway reference in the manual makes 1-Up's name anything more than "1-Up". I say uncapitalized because if the manual read, "1up the Extra Man", I could accept it as part of the name, but I think it's just a description—if 1-Up weren't getting in the way on that level, Stinkoman wouldn't have to protect him. He's literally an extra man. — It's dot com 01:31, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Like I said, I don't think that was really the interview in question (I'm pretty sure the "1-Up Extraman" thing predates many things mentioned in that article - for instance, The Cheat Commandos.) It was just the best I could find. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:51, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
That's kinda my point. We don't really have enough to go on. If this were a fun fact, "the extra man" would be declined with severe prejudice. — It's dot com 07:03, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I still say I've heard it before, long predating the game and likely predating that interview. It would've been nice if TBC had just come out and admitted the character's name in the first place. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 07:21, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Maybe you think I don't believe that the interview is out there somewhere. That's not the case at all. I've looked through the page's history, and there were references to "Extraman" way before the debut of the Stinkogame. So I don't doubt for a second that TBC were considering giving 1-Up a different name. What I'm saying is, even if they were considering this, they ultimately chose "1-Up", and the isolated "extra man" bit in the manual is just a gag. Here's an analogy: at one point, they were going to make the KOT be Marzipan's father. Heck, you can even still find this on the official site. But they have clearly abandoned this idea, and it is not considered canon. — It's dot com 13:46, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I see where you're coming from. I suppose all we can do is wait and see if the "Extra Man" monicker is ever used again... --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 17:47, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deletion

Why is this being deleted? Does the new Stinkoman game confirm that his name is 1up? Aurora Szalinski 11:45, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

I think that must be the reason (watch the intro) - but shouldn't it be a redirect instead? --Jay 11:46, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)
I've fixed this. The article should have been moved, not deleted. -- Tom 12:23, 21 Mar 2005 (MST)

20X6 Homestar?

Is it really nessecary to say that we used to call him 20X6 Homestar? It's okay to say when he was first officially named, but I don't think the old name is nessecary, as it isn't even related to anything officially H*R, just stuff from the wiki. --Joshua 15:32, 25 Mar 2005 (MST)

It's not even necessary. Changed it. -- tomstiff 25 Mar 2005

Why is it when 1-up appears in a toon noone says his name? Porchi 02.11.05

1-UP-UP-UP-UP-UP-UP

I like 1-UP,but how come when I image search"1-up" alls I get are green mushrooms?-BOBLAND

You're the one who made that nonsensical thing on Talk:20X6 Coach Z, right? Well, 1-Ups are "extra lives" in video games, duh. The Mario series makes them look like green mushrooms. --thatkidsam 19:37, 15 May 2005 (UTC)

"1-Up" used to mean it was Player 1's turn to play. The full term was "Player 1 Up" and it usually appeared above the score. But as early as Mr. Do! and other games, free lives were given for certain achievements. Sometimes they were called 1-Ups to differentiate from bonus scores like 1000, etc. By the time of Super Mario Bros., they made it a moving green mushroom. This was the most famous (but NOT the first) 1-Up item, so of course it's associated with 1-Ups. ¡ɯooz + 00:09, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

SORRY:(

Well,I'm sorry.I just don't own a gameboy.:(-BOBLAND

Or a Ninendo, or a Super Nintendo, or a Nintendo 64, or a Gamecube, or a DS, or... ;) --Jay (Talk) 21:29, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
pretty much, you never played a game withj mario in it, seen a flash movie of Mario (he usually uses a green mushroom in them), or seen the t-sshirt with it on it , right?
Or an Xbox, or a Playstation, or a... a... Crap. Those are all the rest I can name. Jay finished up most of them. I don't own any of those either. Friggin' waste of a joke that could be funny but FaceCrap 15:14, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, Mario is a Nintendo character, and is about as likely to appear on those systems as Freddy Krueger is to guest-star on Sesame Street. --DorianGray
Or a PS2 or an Xbox 360 or a PSP or have never even heard of Mario until you came in here, you total nerd. - Eruption257

Evolution

Does anyone think whether 1-up has evolved or not? His back-most leg was darkened in Under Construction, but it changed back in time capsule. I'm not sure whether to say 1-up has evolved or not. -FaceCrap

HALDO anibodi? -FaceCrap 13:24, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Time capsule was way before under construction. Plus, the darker leg is probably a shadow. Visorbot 386 02:43, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

1-Up isn't the guy?

Didn't 1-Up prove that he cold be the guy on level 5? I never was able to beat this level though. Any thoughts on this?-A curious Runstar Homer

He beat Nebulon, sure, but he then got kidnapped right after. Plus he needed Stinkoman's help in the previous level. He's not quite 'The Guy' material just yet... Maybe when he's older. --DorianGray
But he did prove that he's not just a kid anymore. - Joshua

True. He isn't just a kid, but the only reason he needed Stinkoman's help in Lava Zone is because he had Stinkoman's power crunch. AND because he was stupid enough to take that shortcut. But I think he's possible "Guy" material. Maybe Stinkoman just wants all the glory for himself.-Runstar Homer

That sounds reasonable. Stinkoman is still an alternate version of Strong Bad, after all. Glory-hogging might fit the personality. --DorianGray

You can't not be just a kid and not be the guy. Or can you? SaltyTalk! 03:46, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Of course you can. Unless the word man is not a word, apparently, 1-Up is a man, but not "The Guy" yet.-Runstar "not in a fevery haze!" Homer

Of course, in level 4, 1-up was stupid enough to walk right into lava flows and enemies. Face it. 1-up is an idiot.-StinkOmega

Welllllllllllllll... he'd be the guy if he had a better freakin' attack than simply kicking. Mabye something long range like Stinkoman. His level is FRUSTRATING!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!-Runstar Homer 22:51, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

1-Up and Pronunciation

I've noticed this little peculiarity: Homestar Runner's name is pronounced in his accent "Homestaw Wuh-nohw," and I noticed that when pronouncing 1-Up's name in this voice, it came to be "Wuhn-uhp." This is peculiar because of the Wuh-nohw and Wuhn-uhp in the pronunciation in Homestar's accent.

Give that, is it possible that 1-Up's name may have been a grammatical corruption of Runner, and not just the reference to Nintendo Mario games? DannyDaWriter (talk, contribs)

Ooh, excellent theory. I'd love to hear what TBC have to say about this. If only they could answer our millions of other questions too. —BazookaJoe 02:56, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

1-up inspired by Pandamar?

http://www.famicomworld.com/Pirated/Power_Joy_008_PIR.htm

I have one of those exact carts but Pandamar doesn't work. But you have to admit, the resemblence is eerily similar.

Huh? Looks more like Pan-Pan. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:47, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Often squished by Pan Pan?

So, I can remember this happening once: in japanese cartoon. Am I forgetting more instances that would make it correct to say he's "often" squished by Pan Pan? Heimstern Läufer 03:51, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

I think it's not correct. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 04:01, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
It also happens in Under Construction. Which is pretty much all of their co-starring appearances. --DorianGray

Accomplishment?

How is finding Homestar's time box a "notable accomplishment"? It's just a gross old wig in a box. Nothing special about it.-StinkOmega

If you look at it in terms of "he found some ancient artifact" it becomes somewhat notable. Bad Bad Guy 01:20, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
