Wisp of smoke

Smoke on the water mountain

I think that when Marzipan notes that Homestar Runner will be able to eat brunch with her at her parents' house, the small wisp of black smoke that rises from above his head resembles a climber on the mountain in the final frame before the smoke disappears. I may be hallucinating, though. Either way, time to sleep... -- eb3686 | talk 09:46, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Here's an image to help illustrate his point. While I can see where he gets the idea, I think it's a not-notable coincidence. It's not the first time they've used the "angry smoke" image, and the positioning is because Homestar just happens to be directly near the valley there. --DorianGray 09:57, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the image! I agree with you, but I thought that I'd point it out just in case so that everyone can decide on it. Yes, sleepy time needed. -- eb3686 | talk 10:02, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Father of six?

Is this meant to refer to Strong Bad Email and the sub-series? (Teen Girl Squad, Cheat Commandos, etc.)

Wow. That's probably the biggest stretch I ever witnessed on a Wiki Talk page. BBG 17:31, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Trivia.

Someone put that it was the first time we see Homestar in long pants, but I deffinately recall seing him in long pants in Highschool.

First time in long pants as... Homestar. He was wearing them in Highschool, but that was in Strong Bad's imagenation.
That's quite nitpicky and not very fun a fact. — Defender1031*Talk 00:53, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

He was wearing pants in montage, and kind of in yes, wrestling. Omnisweater 04:17, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

But again, the instances in Highschool, Montage, and yes, wrestling were all Strong Bad's creation. I think it could deserve attention. —Guard Duck talk 04:20, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Costume Commercial. Homestar Runner's Daisy Dukes. Like, every Halloween toon. --DorianGray 04:23, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Daisy Dukes are short pants, but you're right about all the costumes. It could say it's the first instance of Homestar wearing long pants with the exception of the Halloween episodes, but that just seems way too wordy and obscure. —Guard Duck talk 04:33, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Smile for the cartoon, Strong Bad!

Is everyone here too... something...meh, whatever... to notice Strong Bad smiles twice in this toon? but, a buttdanceNeox ONION BUBS!YOU WILL RESPECT MAH AUTHORI-TAH!!! 15:55, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes. BBG 16:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
I don't have a stake in the argument over whether to include SB smiling, but I have an issue here. I see that the edit has been removed at least twice with reference to the aforementioned talk page. Said talk page has only a handful of comments on the subject and no consensus on a cutoff date. Furthermore, the argument to cut off these comments should come from the article, not the article's talk page, should it not? It seems that edits are being removed without a solid reason given for doing so. 146.122.71.68 17:27, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
...In English, please? but, a buttdanceNeox ONION BUBS!YOU WILL RESPECT MAH AUTHORI-TAH!!! 22:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
זה היה אנגלית. אני יכול לספר לך בעברית אם אתה רוצה... (That was english. I can tell you in Hebrew if you want...) — Defender1031*Talk 22:09, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Steep deep

The way Steep Deep is made came to mind two possible references: either the climactic scene of How The Grinch Stole Christmas TV special or the Cliffhanger game from The Price Is Right. The former is more plausible, given the holiday theme. Thoughts? Broken glass? wbwolf (t | ed) 18:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

+1 for the Grinch. Homestar teetering over it on the sled is too much like the climax to be a coincidence imo

Some Irrelevant Crap

Someone mentioned this on the forum: do the TV special parts w/ the piano, pipe, etc. seem like that Stephen Colbert christmas special that was on last month? I personally doubt it, More likely a parody of christmas specials in general, but hey, some o' you might think so. -Lifty Fernandez

They are clearly both mocking the concept of Holiday Specials, non-notable in my opinion. Flashfight 18:43, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
I think Homestar is wearing a cardigan, not a suit. That and the pipe make me think this could be a reference specifically to Bing Crosby. Sentroyd 19:21, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
I was pretty sure it was meant for Homestar to look like Mr. Rogers. but, a buttdanceNeox ONION BUBS!YOU WILL RESPECT MAH AUTHORI-TAH!!! 22:08, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
I thought it had refrences to the SC special too. Especially the "oh, I didn't see you there" part. 76.28.156.79 20:15, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
This is common to many spoofs of old-style celebrity specials. It is far more likely that SC and H*R are spoofing the same source than that H*R is spoofing the spoof. See the mid-1980s SNL skit with Eddie Murphy as Gumby in "Merry Christmas, D**mit!" It's the same format. The "Oh, I didn't see you there" line a common method of appearing "off the cuff."

Previous Engagement = Prior Arrangement

I think it should be noted in the article that when Strong Bad translates the cheat as "previous engagement", he (or the Cheat) probably meant "prior arrangement". A previous engagement is something that has already happened, not something that is about to happen that the Cheat must attend.

Nah.. "previous engagement" is fine. Here's one source. 98.127.16.93 19:14, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Again?

Hey, is it me, or are Homestar, Bubs, and Coach Z are all projecting very poor acting during the commercial? It's not on the toon's page and it's not on the bad acting page, but I'm too afraid to add it. Could anyone do that for me? Corruption 22:03, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

"Chef" or "Seth"?

I believe he said "My compliments to the Seth". --Alex H. 99.189.252.31 23:16, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Sounds more like "fesh", though I'm still not at all sure. I can definately hear an s-ish sound at the end, and "fesh" would be "chef" backwards. --Belthazar 00:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Sounds a lot like Seth to me, but the sound quality seems to degrade during that scene.
And the music kinda drowns out Homestar's word partially too. I can't tell either way. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:36, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
I distinctly heard "Thes". That might be just me, though. Tooty-Two 03:07, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
I heard "cef" as in "chef" with no "h" -70.245.222.179 03:50, 23 December 2008 (UTC) (ding-dang it, I keep forgetting to log in -Everybody!)
The joke only makes sense if he's saying "Seth." Marzipan previously mentioned how Seth was bringing his friends from the philosophy dept. over. Nightsong81 02:48, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, that assumes it's meant to be a joke. "Chef" would be the normal word to be used there. But that doesn't mean "chef" is the right word for the transcript; just the word that would normally fit into that sentence. Seth, I agree, is the only reasonable alternative. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:05, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
Just my two cents on that, but before seeing the transcript, I heard "cess"... -Zero.exe

Brunch at 12:30 a goof?

"Some people eat brunch late. Homestar does." --Alexie 01:18, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

If it's after 12:30, then as far as pretty much anyone would be concerned, it's lunch. If not dinner. The best argument against is that the brunch is actually the next day, or something like that. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Or maybe it's just a joke. --Alexie 05:21, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Pretty obscure (and unfunny) for a joke. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that'd be pretty lame. It's probably just a teeny inconsistency (or is it?) (Glad it's in Remarks now.) --Alexie 07:03, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Defying Death=Death?

When Homestar sleds down the steep deep, he doesn't attempt to "defy death". Instead, he is trying to kill himself so he doesn't have to see marzipan's relatives. I just thought I'd point that out... Tooty-Two 02:05, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, that's kinda' the joke. He's probably saying he will defy-death in hopes no one will catch on to his plot of trying to injure himself badly so that he won't have to go to Marzipan's parents' house. Also, "A Badly-Injuring Decemberween" isn't as appealing to the eye :) DevonM(talk·cont-ribs) 02:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, oh, oh! Now I see your logic. It does make a bit more sense...somewhat Tooty-Two 02:43, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

isnt Marzipan's dad the KOT?

That was the original plan, but it's been retconned out of existence. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:04, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Pom Pom

Anyone notice that Pom pom and coach Z are throwing snow outside the "window" on the sound stage... just thought I'd mention it since I didn't see it anywhere. Javaguy78 15:21, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

nm.. i see it mentioned that it's Bub's hand, though the first time I saw it, I thought it was Pom Pom's hand.. he must be out ladying this decemberween Javaguy78 15:23, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

He didn't... did he?

This is just a thought here, but I thought the whole "variety show" segment seemed a lot like Mr. Rogers... especially the outfit. I mean, look at this picture. There's definitely some similarity there... -Zero.exe 24.91.33.102 20:53, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Calender Remark? 24

Just like to remark that the Calender in the toon says its the 24th, but the toon was released on the 22nd (which I found rather humorous when I watched it on Monday to see that it was now the future!).--66.245.248.55 06:07, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Not notable. Other toons (most of them holiday-related) have been seen to be on days other than the days they were released. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:41, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
For example, Homestar Presents: Presents was released on the 20th but takes place entirely on the evening of the 25th. All Halloween toons take place on Halloween itself, but not a single one was released on Halloween (unless you accept the Bros. Chaps' claim on the menu button of Halloween Potion-ma-jig, which was actually released the day after Halloween.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:45, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Jones

Is it possible that ¨Jones¨ is referring to Jones Soda? Just a thought... Thesithwithashotgunshell 20:51, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

bubs's arm or pompom's arm?

It's orange, and I think I see Pompom's arm throwing up the "SNOW". THINK ABOUT IT, PEOPLE. Look closely! --The 386 My talk 21:28, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Given that it suddenly switches to Coach Z's arm once Bubs appears in the doorway (thus no longer being there to throw snow), and also that Bubs has a much longer reach to be off-screen while throwing. Further, Pom Pom's has a stubbier, shinier look than Bubs'. --DorianGray 21:31, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I assumed Pom Pom at first when I saw it, but later realized that it had to be Bubs, given the switch. Also given that the arm isn't straight - Pom Pom's always is, but Bubs has a noticeable elbow. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 21:40, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
Heh, it seems to me that everyone thought it was Pom Pom until Bubs appeared at the door, at which point (almost) everyone realised it was Bubs all along, and could never have been Pom Pom. Me included. =) --Belthazar 23:45, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
I knew it was bubs the whole time, and only when i saw this conversation was like "there are people who thought it was pom pom?!" — Defender1031*Talk 23:49, 25 December 2008 (UTC)
The arm bends when it picks up the snow, and as far as I'm concerned, Pom-Pom's arm has never had an elbow. Chipwich 15:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Decemberween or Decemberw'eve?

Homestar's speech impediment makes it a little hard to make out, but every time he announces his upcoming stunt, it sounds to me like he's saying it'll take place on Decemberw'eve.

Sounds like Decemberween to me. Besides, he's clearly doing it on the day after the one specifically identified as Decemberween eve. --Belthazar 21:11, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
If you listen real closely, you can clearly hear that he says "This decemberw'eve" both times. However, it does end up appearing to take place on Decemberween, as the Cheat and Homestar bury the mattress at night. Tooty-Two 00:18, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Thatguy?

Might be stretching a little here, but could the first scene of the "special" where Homestar has his pipe be a reference to the "Ask ThatGuy" section of clips from thatguywiththeglasses.com? Here's a link to one of the clips. At the beginning of each of those, he has that pipe, and also says "Hi, (or hi in a foreign language) didn't hear you come in."

Like I said, it's a stretch, but the similarity is there, and it's the first thing I thought of when I saw that scene. Are TBC actually starting to refer to other websites now? 96.231.42.46 07:00, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
