== What counts? ==
 +
 +
So i mentioned it a couple years ago, but nothing was ever actually done. There's no clear rule as to what counts as a catchphrase and what doesn't. At the moment, it seems to just be people adding fun quotes and hoping they stay. This is not a good system. We need to define what counts as a catch phrase, and then remove those that don't. Anyone know where to begin a discussion as to what counts? {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 21:57, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

:::Basically, nothing added today counts, and I removed the remainder. That leaves the question: Do we make a cutoff for how many times something must be repeated? Even then, we have cases where things AREN'T repeated (much if at all) but are called or treated like catch phrases; [[the facts|"That's bupkis!"]] being a prime example. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 23:40, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
 +
::::Exactly. There are cases where stuff IS repeated that doesn't make it a catch phrase (ex: anything involving the phrase "terrific athlete") and there are things that are never repeated that are clearly catch phrases (ex: "Look lively!") I don't think the criterion is related to reuse. But then, what IS the criterion? {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 23:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
 +
:::::Also, does "Made from the best stuff" really count? It's a slogan, not a catch phrase. But according to some definitions, a slogan and a catch phrase can be the same thing. Also, if it DOES count, then why shouldn't "drink in that bun!"? So what makes a catch phrase a catch phrase? {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 00:28, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
 +
::::::That one's easy enough to answer. A catch phrase should be tied to a character, not a product. So "Drink in that bun" is tied to the Sog Dog, not Coach Z. Not a catch phrase. On the other hand, Marshie is pretty much ''defined'' by being the creepy mascot of Fluffy Puff Marshmallows, so it's not unreasonable to consider the Fluffy Puff slogan to ''also'' be his catch phrase, given that he says it frequently enough. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 00:33, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
 +
:::::::Okay, bad example. Still, questions like this are what need to be discussed, and i think we need to have a comprehensive definition of what is and is not a catchphrase. {{User:DeFender1031/sig}} 00:37, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
 +
 +
No, no, I get that. I've been trying to come up with a definition, but the problem is... it's kind of hard to define. The best I can come up with is a long list of things that should flag the listener that something's a catch phrase (used repeatedly in unusual contexts, contains an unusual word, complex enough that it's noticeable when it's repeated, called a catch phrase by the characters themselves), yet all but the last of those can be corrupted by noticeably ''non''-catchphrasey examples. --{{User:Jay/sig}} 00:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Most of these phrases are barely ever used. Holy Crap is'nt seen much more, and I believe it's mentioned a lot on Crap. Bluebry 22:45, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I could give this page a chance. It would need to be fixed up quite a bit though. — It's dot com 23:12, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
I dunno, I'm afraid this page will be the subject of much snowballing and revert wars. Just what is a "Catchphrase" is really a matter of opinion. Thunderbird 00:35, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Dot com. The way the appearances are listed needs to be fixed up, but it does seem like a good page. — talk Bubsty edits 00:46, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I'll get right to work!!!!!! Lopp3

I'm inclined to go with Thunderbird. How many times does something need to constitute it being a catch phrase? And what seperates something from being a catch prase/slogan/motto, etc.? Catch phrases can be interpreted in many different ways. - Super Sam 09:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Catch phrases are something that is said repeatatly until it became popular. The problem with most of the phrases here (exept "holy crap") is that they became popular without being repeated. This page is full with point of views and will casue much arguments over what, and what not should be included. I say delete. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 10:23, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[Delete] None of the characters actually have consistent catch phrases throughout the series. These quotes appeared once, maybe twice. — Lapper (talk) 13:13, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[Possibly keep] I agree with Dot com. This article might be worth keeping if it's cleaned up a bit. some of the things on here just aren't catch phrases. But I don't think it's true at all to say that none of the characters have catch phrases. Heimstern Läufer 19:06, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm workin on it as hard as I can, but I'm working on the big project of Strong Bad's Technology as well. Soooo...give me a little bit of time, as SB's technology has a lot of formatting to be done. Lopp3 (Who can't figure out how the **** to work his sig.)
[Keep] I think that this page needs a major cleanup than a delortion. But otherwise, I think that the information seen here is pretty useful and relevant. So yeah. teeeffoh! 00:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
