Bling

I think the caption 'Bling-Bling indeed!' should be changed. Bling bling is more like jewelery. What CoachZ is wearing is more like the clocks Public Enemy would wear, and since he prefers old school hip hop. Bling bling is more new school, rappers such as 50 Cent, or Snoop Dogg.

Nah. It's pretty much "bling". Also, please sign your posts. Thank-you. →[[User:FireBird|FireBird]]
The name bling bling come from the sound the jewelery makes, that alone won't make a sound, definitely more decoration purpose, and being into old school hip hop, before bling was anything, he wouldn't be interested in bling. Even new school stuff which is closer to old school today, Jurassic 5, or Black Eyed Peas, steers clear of anything 'bling'. thecoachz

Alright, Coach Z is clearly an adult (albeit with a funky afro) in the sbemail stand-up, he thanks little marzipan for her clogging. Later, in marzipan's answering machine 5, coach Z is drunkenly propositioning her. What kinda sick pedophile is he ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Well, Marzipan's not a child any more. More importantly, the characters aren't human, so we can't tell how they age - Coach Z could potentially be a year or two older than her. We can't start drawing human parallels with a character with no nose or mouth. --Upsilon
I speculate that Marzipan is now a teenager or in her 20's, and Coach Z is in his 40's or 50's. -Clever Ben
I speculate that Marzipan is 25 year old, and Coach Z is 30 or so. I know that is most likely wrong as with stand-up, but that's just how I always looked at them...Kvb 18:39, 2 May 2005 (UTC)
If i remember correctly, Coach Z describes himself as an 'old man' in caffeine and has ailing back problems, albeit encouraged by sleeping on a locker room bench. As such, I always regarded him as nearing late-middle age, although his penchant for hip-hop would seem contrary to this - or maybe I'm being ageist. Regardless, I think Marzipan's maturity would debunk any grounds for pedophilia accusations. Grover Junior
Just leave it alone--you're ruining the magic. -Innocent Bystander
I agree with Clever Ben about their age. Also, consider the fact that Coach is their Coach, and has been since they were kids.20X6 GEM

Okay, why is the section edit link hidden behind text? (at least for me. FireFox. But don't say anything bad about it, or I'll punch your refresh button so hard you'll be loading tomorrow's edits.) —AbdiViklas 02:57, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

It happens from time to time. A Wiki glitch, I think. Just hard-refresh while the edit link would normally be on-screen; that usually fixes it for me. And, are we a bit touchy today? --Jay (Talk) 03:00, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
LOL—no, just jealous for the honor of the One True Browser. As long as the glitch is on my side, I'll ignore it. —AbdiViklas 03:03, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah and in "Rampage" he says he has problems with his back and something else like that...I'll figure it out later. It was when he and Strong bad were on a Lyrical Rampage.--Gir007 02:12, 13 February 2006 (UTC)Zaak

Context for mispronunciations

It would be nice to link to the toon in question for each of the mispronounced words on the list. For one thing, it would make it easier to verify additions to the list, besides which it would improve its knowledge-base usefulness! —AbdiViklas 02:22, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Swtchereroo?

Has anyone else noticed that Strong Sad and Coach Z seem to be "switching roles"? Strong Sad is much more outgoing, and Coach Z is starting to ask depressed, as in "No, I'm not alone! Yes, this phone is plugged in" (talking to himself), and more recently, "Unless Coach Z's life is a magic potion." (saying he's riuined his own life)in Halloween Potion-Ma-Jig. I'm just saying. Pretty weird. Cheatachu72

Good call. I'm not so sure Strong Sad is changing permanently, though. Although he's gone from being Eeyore to (as per prophecy) "more whiny" to, now, more of a long-suffering misunderstood-poet type. But as for Coach Z being depressing, I think that starts at least with some of those answering machine versions, particularly 8.0. That one sure knows how to tug at your heartstrings. (He's just such a trouper.) —AbdiViklas 23:40, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
Editor's note: These three comments were left originally as HTML comments and have now been made visible on this talk page.
I think you want "trooper", because "trouper" indicates someone who is part of a troupe - as in, a traveling band of performers, etc. A "trooper," in this case, is someone who keeps going, against all odds.— Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk)
Dictionary.com seems to prefer "trouper." "Trooper" doesn't have a resilience definition, at least in the dictionaries I glanced through. Spell4yr
this is funny! But definitely very informative... I know to use trouper now! --Stux
The rest are regular comments.
On the other hand, the Mirriam Webster entry for "trooper" lists the third definition as "TROUPER," which in turn contains the connotation we're looking for here. So it's not like it's absolutely wrong to use "trooper." —AbdiViklas 21:31, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
As supported by the fact that I was about to go change it in crying, and was reminded by a hidden comment that it was spelled as "trooper" on the screen. —AbdiViklas 21:38, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Wouldn't that make it a goof then??? --Stux 21:48, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
I don't think so. "Trooper" may not be officially defined in the dictionary, but it is commonly accepted, at least in American English. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 22:04, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Look at ABBA's "Super Trouper" for a proper usage. Elvis 18:32, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Coach Z has always struck me as the misunderstood type, right from the start. He's the type to get out there and help however he can, but people often misunderstand him partly because he tries too hard. Seems TBC have been playing up more on his personal, inner side lately, rather than his outer, social side. But I don't see his character really changing all that much - I think we're just getting to know him better over time. :) - KieferSkunk 23:45, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
I personally think that it's Coach Z's insecurities that are just starting to surface more and more. My guess is that his style and taste in music are a reflection of his attempt to draw attention and fit in. Only now, his desires for attention and/or acceptance not being realized through his "hip-hopness" (not that he's not being accepted) and its beginning to take its toll. His loneliness and insecurity is now starting to become more visible. Of course coach Z wouldn't be coach Z without his hip-hopness (??). I'm probably overanalyzing but still, that's my take on things. --Stux 20:38, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
I think Coach Z is getting more emotional and showing it, but discussing this character's emotional development (or lack thereof) is depressing in itself. Elvis 18:37, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Coach X or Coach Y?

There's a new remark that mentions that in A Folky Tale, Coach Z refers to Coach X and Coach Y in the present tense, indicating that these other Coaches exist and are known to Strong Sad. I wanted to call this one into question: I don't think Coach Z's phrasing in Folky Tale means anything more than just "You might get away with that with someone else, but not with me", and he just called out X and Y as hypothetical examples. We have no evidence anywhere else that there is a Coach X or Y in the HSR universe. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 22:10, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

The Cheat and The Chort

I'm adding this here because I don't know if it should be STUFF'd or not. Now, on the page under inconsistencies, we note the saying of both "The Chort" and "The Cheat" in mascot. Call me crazy, but I don't really think this is an inconsistency, because Coach Z only calls The Cheat "The Chort." I would consider the other person/thing Coach Z is referencing (who I'll call The Chort for the sake of the argument) to be an Unseen Character. What do y'all think? --ISlayedTheKerrek 18:13, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, it's true that Coach Z's comment ("Get yer head in the game, The Chort! The Cheat is wide open!") doesn't make much sense in the context - basically, he's telling The Cheat to somehow cooperate with himself. But there are two things going on here: One, in the context, there would be no reason for an unseen "The Chort" or such like - The Cheat is bashing a pile of (unmoving) electronics. Two, regardless of who he's talking to or what the context is, Coach Z's accent almost ALWAYS has him saying the long E "ee" as "or" (Cheat -> Chort, etc), so him actually saying "The Cheat" is inconsistent, whether he's referring directly to The Cheat or not. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 21:08, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

Closed STUFF

You're dealing with Coach dang Z!!

In his character video, Coach Z says you can call him just "Coach" because he's the only one; but in A Folky Tale, he refers to Coach X and Coach Y in the present tense, and in a context that implies they are also known to Strong Sad.

Coach Z mispronunciations

Is it possible to get the Coach Z mispronunciations to have citations? Just throwin' that out there... Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:01, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Citations? As in, you want to know where the mispronunciations came from? Or you want to see the sentence the mispronounced word appeared in? Or both? Such an analysis could be done, but would take time and require a significant rewrite of that section of the page. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:34, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I know, it would be a HUGE undertaking. Not that I'm volunteering! Just throwin' that idea out there. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 18:39, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
If I have time later, I'll see about making a table similar to the ones in Foreign Words and Internet Slang. This one would just list the base word, the way Coach Z says it, and the cartoon/email the mispronunciation appeared in. I don't think it'll be necessary to also write the full sentence for context - if someone wants to know the context, the link to the Toon would allow them to read the transcript for the toon in question easily. Also, "The Chort" should link to The Cheat's filmography, since that one happens a lot. — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 18:52, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
The full sentence would be available at the transcription, so no use in doing that twice. I see you're on it, glad I spurred something positive! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Not bad for 40 minute's work! Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 01:10, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! :) — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 01:35, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

The pamcakes... were Homestar's!!!

I'm leery about including the "pamcakes" reference, for two reasons:

  1. It doesn't fall under Coach Z's usual mispronunciation patterns.
  2. Z is actually just imitating a mispronunciation that Homestar already made.

Thoughts? --Jay (Talk) 15:46, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree. — talk Bubsty edits 15:49, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Northeast?

Maybe Coach Z is from the north east. Mainly because he adds the unneeded r in all of this words. People from the Northeast, example Boston (In which Coach Z has mentioned knowing someone from there) they add in the unneeded r's in their words.--H*Bad 15:51, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps, but it's established that his accent is a mix of regionalisms, and that he drops the accent frequently. Trying to pin the made-up accent to a location seems futile to me. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:56, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
When people drop their accent that means that the accent is starting to show that its going to go away.--H*Bad 15:58, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
The point is that Coach Z's accent is an anomaly - it doesn't follow the "standard rules" for accents, and it's been properly speculated (both here and in the Toons themselves) that his accent is bogus (that he mispronounces words deliberately). Therefore, trying to place the accent is pretty much futile as Qermaq suggested, and I don't think Coach Z's accent is likely to go away any time soon (considering that's one of his main defining characteristics). — Image:kskunk_fstandby.gif KieferSkunk (talk) — 15:30, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
"North American Flat" would best fit his outlandish dialect.--The Real Zajac 12:23, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

More than 2 problems

This seems to be his catch-phrase! I think we should mention it. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 20:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

But it's only been used twice, on Spin 'n Say and Main Page 11. It's a funny quote, not a catchphrase. Besides, the article already says, "As Coach Z himself is not afraid to admit, he's got more than two problems." – The Chort 20:32, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Strong Bad IMs

Hey, I was just watching the Marzipan email on my Strong Bad DVD and realized that you can use pause and slo mo to read all of the IMs popping up when he's trying to write the Cheat--anyway, he says it's Marzipan, but she denies it, and one message that you can only see on slo mo says 'Are you trying to fade me?' Coach Z has an apartment?

In http://homestarrunner.com/costumes.html , the coach Z costume (third picture) Strong Bad mentions that the person "really nailed the condition of Coach Z's apartment" ~Kroc

I think that's more of a joke, Strong Bad himself has stated that Coach Z lives in the locker room in hygiene.--~ SlipStream 09:20, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Aff-Amer?

Considering Coach Z dressed as African Americans in hip-hop culture for Halloween in the past 8 years and made a reference to the BET charts, it's not safe to think of him as an A.A. in the H*R universe, is it? He had the 'fro and 'stache long ago, though. Just some theory I've been pondering for a year or two. --Charlie Jr. 22:15, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it's more that he's decidedly not African-American that makes it funny — he's got a strong Minnesotan accent, so I think that he's a lot more like a Midwestern Caucasian trying to portray himself as a rapper with street cred. Trey56 22:59, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

More than his more than two problems

this list seems to have turned into "Coach Z's more than 2 times of doing something stupid" rather than his actual problems. I suggest removal of all but the actual problems. I'll do it, so long as there's consensus. So, any thoughts? — Defender1031*Talk 21:21, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I also believe that list is too long. Bad Bad Guy 21:29, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Agree. Most of them aren't actual problems, but are more results of the root problems. --DorianGray 21:43, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Edit conflicted: Actually, going through it and commenting, i have discovered that it's not overly long as much as disorganized. (see below, i quit halfway through) I think it could be organized into actual problems and then sub bulleted with specific examples. (After conflict) Exactly my point, it should be organized by root and then by instance. — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

The list

Well, then that begs the question, what stays and what goes... so, let's discuss:

  • Despite being a coach, he doesn't know what a basketball is, as indicated in secret recipes.
I could see this one being useful, even though it's not an actual problem, as he IS a coach. I don't know, i could go both ways.
  • He seems to have psychological problems. For example, in garage sale, he is seen gathering up all the "great for baby" items, but is reluctant to explain why. When Strong Bad comments that "garbage sale" is "for moms only", Coach Z responds "Oh, then I'm okay to say it." In Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 8.0, he admits he sometimes forgets what's real and what's just in his head.
Keep, and i think we can condense a lot of the other ones into this one as sub bullets. — Defender1031*Talk
  • His accent makes his speech almost incapable of comprehension.
I'd rewrite it, and link to later on in the page, but keep. — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He has admitted that he has athlete's foot. This was further implied as "problems with his feet" in rampage.
Maybe a bullet called medical problems with this and others as a sub bullet? — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
medical problem, sub bullet. — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He has been drunk multiple times, usually on mouthwash.
definite keep. — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He would rather play with a cardboard box clearly labeled "NOT A BALL!" than with an actual ball, as seen in highschool.
no. remove. — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He spiked the punch at the senior prom with mouthwash.
i would say remove, but if we're gonna keep, then as a sub bullet under his alchoholism — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He has bad hand-eye coordination, as evidenced in cliffhangers.
medical sub bullet — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He has an obsession with butts.
psychological sub bullet — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He holds the record for the longest time gone without showering.
maybe add a sub bullet for hygeine — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
weird, but not under any specific problem... i say either remove or maybe a misc bullet? — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • He enjoys covering puke in sawdust, as seen in Sbemail 169 Deleted Scene, where he says "This is what I live for!" In the commentary for that scene, he claims that "Sawdust makes everything delicious".
same here — Defender1031*Talk 21:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
You enjoy covering puke in sawdust as well? =] OptimisticFool 21:55, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Hahahaha, i was referring to my comment on the last fact. cute though. — Defender1031*Talk 21:57, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
  • In Sbemail 169 Deleted Scene, he claims to only know a few words, such as "pfargtl". In the commentary for that scene, he claims "pfargtl" is his favorite animal, and he had a "p-family pfargtl" when he was a kid.
  • He wears a disturbingly small bathing suit when swimming and leaks a black fluid when it is removed, as seen in underlings.
  • He has a weak imagination, as evidenced in DNA Evidence.
  • He fancies himself as a hip-hop artist, but has little musical talent.
  • It has been implied that he has a crush on Marzipan; he has occasionally made inappropriate comments about her and has admitted to sneaking into her house.
  • He has personal financial problems (due to his apparent job as a janitor), causing his electricity to be shut off each year.
  • He seems to believe he's in a relationship with Bubs, as seen in Date Nite.
  • He has slight memory loss, as seen in mini-golf.
  • Even when he finds something he's eating awful, such as a bowl of sour cream and The Cheat fur, he still eats it.
  • He has puked his pants many times.
  • His hygiene habits are so poor that at one point, he believed that the shower heads in his locker room were his "drippy, broken speakers".
  • He likes topical ointments, as indicated in Rap Song.
  • He carries a bottle of questionable water with him at all times for questionable reasons.
  • He believes that in "the 74's were the prime of his dating year", and that "back then every lady would go out with anything that had a mustache".
  • He believes that a sketch of a cell phone is a real cell phone.
  • He cooks a hot dog from a shower in environment, thinking he is cooking with hydroelectricity.
    • I thought this was one of the most irrelevant, if not the most irrelevant, entries on the list. Bad Bad Guy 12:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
      • Actually, if you don't agree with me it could be a bullet point underneath that thing about eating awful dishes. Bad Bad Guy 18:31, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
  • On Trogday 08, he once asked one of his drawings to be his bride.
    • The only reason I added this was to match the fact above it. Bad Bad Guy 12:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes, and do you know how many times when i was little i got one of those toy ride-on cars, but was happier pretending the box it came in was a spaceship? Well, just once, because how many ride-on cars does a household need, but that box got some good use out of it... — Defender1031*Talk 19:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, babies aren't the smartest beings on the planet. That's why they're so cute! Also, that was just Strong Bad's unphotographic memory of their babyhood. Coach Z probably wasn't even in the same nursery as Strong Bad. As a general rule of thumb, I'd take the entire email with a Dead Sea's quantity of salt. – The Chort 20:03, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

I searched the wiki, and he doesn't appear to be any mention of athletes foot other than in relation to this, and modeling which he wasn't even in. — Defender1031*Talk 23:39, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

He says he has "athlete's footies" in labor day... Has Matt? (talk) 13:09, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Really? I think it's important enough... HaldoHelscome! dang, I liked this wiki better before the forum:'(
Besides, evidence goes more against this than for: he's constantly stalking Marzipan. Heck, there's even a line about his stalking Marzipan in Strong Badia the Free. --Jay (Talk) 22:30, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
