Talk:Deliberately Poor English

From Homestar Runner Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

I'm not entirely sure this page is necessary. Viklas's email definitely doesn't seem to belong here, as this isn't intentional on the part of TBC. The rest of this information seems sufficiently covered under Stinkoman 20X6 and other Stinkoman-related pages. Heimstern Läufer 18:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Are there any more instances of Engrish on the site? When you create a page please produece at least three or four for it to merit itself. In you can't find any, I'll have no chioce but to put the page for deletion. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 18:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

I also move for a speedy deletion for the reasons listed above. Thunderbird 18:58, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

I'll add some more instances. --Sam Goldfish 19:03, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure if "Engrish" is the right term for this running gag. TBC seem to parody a very specific form of Engrish - mistranslations in video games, like "congraturation" or "thank you so much for to playing my game." Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 20:44, 8 June 2006 (UTC) (Spoony bards!)

I think Poor translation or Mis-translation is a more accurate name, and broadens the range of instances. Just a thought... Elvis 23:31, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Change the name if you want. --Sam Goldfish 02:56, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Elvis was right. Call it something along the lines of Video Mistranslations, but please DON'T DELETE! - Mipsyx

It's a fully useful page; I see no reason why it needs to be deleted. I'll try to find more instances, if possible. A bit more bulk-up should make this page more useful. -CheetSpeek 21:27, 26 June 2006

Same here. Maybe if we were to rename this article somehow and also improve the list if we can, then we should not delete this article at all, not that we really should anyway. I for one actually like this article. MHarrington 17:44, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I agree with Homestar Coder above: the joke is more about mistranslations in video games than Engrish in general. Trey56 02:42, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I have moved the page from Engrish to Deliberately poor English. — Lapper (talk) 08:17, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

... Try "Deliberately Poor English". ¤ The Dang, Pom Pom, you see that? That's a nice golbol. Talk to me. 17:43, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
"Poor" has no reason to be capitalized. On the other hand, "deliberately" does because it's the first word, and "English" does because that's actually how it's written. — Lapper (talk) 17:46, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Inconsistency. See: How Do You Type With Boxing Gloves On?, Scrolling Shooter Games Menu and others. ¤ The Dang, Pom Pom, you see that? That's a nice golbol. Talk to me. 17:57, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
I moved it to "Deliberately Poor English" with the capital P – except when we're copying an official H*R name (like all the sbemails), we use title case for article names. --phlip TC 18:16, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough. I'll get the redirects. — Lapper (talk) 18:17, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
These are two whole discussions in themselves. The SBEmail titles can just as well be reasoned toward capitalization. Using Title Case on articles has ordinarily been the way it's been done on HRWiki, but there's no reason why that can't change also. But, thems are discussions for another day and another talk page. —BazookaJoe 18:24, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree that the page really isn't nessacary. The Stinkoman reference was refering to how some video games are made in China. And when Strong Bad mispelled English, he was making fun of how the person who sent the e-mail spelled english. They aren't really related. » c u t e p e t s r u s « T/C 15:26, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I think we should only include bad English in video games. --Trogga 00:21, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't think that "My Stummy Hurts" is a mistake. I think its a combination of Stinkoman and Tummy. Like Stinkotummy.

How is the Cheat Commandos thing poor english? --Jangles5150 20:23, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

I think that one is coz it's in the wrong tense. Better wording would be "I wish my girlfriend hadn't left me". --DorianGray 20:26, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page redo required, methinks

I believe this page is incomplete. Just about all of the Videlectrix games contain deliberate poor English and yet they are not listed. This page also uses short dashes instead of long dashes, which most of the "appearances" pages on this site have (such as Blatant Lies). Jimmy91 15:56, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

(revives a dead horse, just to kill it again) There are so many cases of this that it's superfluous... technically, you could just put "See Coach Z" on the page and call it done :P StarLion 21:20, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Not so sure about that...

There are two examples given on this page that I'm not so sure about. The first is Strong Sad's "salad as a rock" phrase, which is really more of a segue than deliberately poor English. He's already talking about salad, and that makes him think of solid as a rock, which is not incorrect grammatically. The other one is Shenkel McDoo saying "Maybe find some coin." That's more slang than anything, if you ask me. I've heard it in conversation before. Although, since this is a non-English speaker giving the line, it could be an error on his part. What do you folks think? Dementedc 04:21, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] O Grande Cornholio Approves Of It

I suppose you should add some Portuguese/Spanish/Hispanic, if you want to replace the "Engrish" phrases (Why? Because I'm tired of poor uses of language, and I approve of this.) -O Grande Cornholio 10:02, 15 September 2008 (UTC) P.S.: I'll be very weak if you don't.

Uhm, I don't know what any of that means, but I will make use of your complimentary spit bucket. Ahct-poo! — Defender1031*Talk 16:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Scope

I really think we should limit the scope of the page to just translation errors and the like, so, game-related, stinkoman related, and maybe the Viklas and Shenkel parts. Otherwise there are so many other instances that should qualify for the page (like the entire content of Be's for example. This page should be limited, like that one.) -134.174.6.125 18:07, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

And by defender's reasoning, deliberately changing word order makes everything on Non-inverted Questions qualify, too. This page should be limited such that this overlap doesn't happen. -134.174.6.125 18:23, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] The Lappy

Shouldn't the Lappy have its own section? Every single word it says is deliberately poor English, not just in grammar but in word choice, such as saying "whim" instead of "him." Abelhawk 14:06, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
