XHTML Validation being pushed by non-staff

If I recall correctly, Defender1031 isn't staff, and shouldn't be editing other people's signatures to conform to the validation of the Wiki's XHTML DTD, (nor was Homestar-Winner, etc. back before I knew about it as they weren't staff either.) However, what does the staff feel about this issue, as I just wanted to ask the question, "Should non-staff go about changing other user signatures?" I'm not trying to be rude or anything, rather, getting the question off my chest, seeing as Staff are the only ones really allowed to edit others' signatures, even though that reverting would go against the HRWiki rules, but a non-staff member editing another user's page (of any kind) is also against said rules, thus creating a rule paradox, if you will. ColdReactive 04:55, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

There's no rule that says that non-admins can't fix the code in other people's signatures. There IS a rule that says "If you must [edit someone else's user space], it should be for a compelling reason, for example to correct linking errors that might confuse readers or to provide technical assistance." Validation, especially when a signature is actively breaking pages, falls under the latter category. Note also that the Validation Committee was created mostly as a response to people using incorrect code in their sigs. (The most telling is the section on font tags: "There are many <font color="red">text</font> tags hanging out here and there. Many people are using them in their sigs. Since font tags are allowed in XHTML 1.0 Transitional, it's okay if people want to continue using them, but they should make sure to enclose the color declaration in quotation marks to keep things valid. However, we should try to switch everyone to <span style="color:#rgb;">text</span>. This method is much more forward compatible.") Also, if you are somehow under the impression that I have no communication with the admins beyond that which is visible to you on the wiki, you are mistaken. I hope that answers your question. — Defender1031*Talk 06:24, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Does a Base64 Image count as an image?

Base64 text can be converted from an image to text and back into an image via CSS. Is it still valid to count such images as personal images even though they are text data? As the base64 text does not require as much data to be sent and received as an image does. (Browser processes the information from the text data, rather than download the image data.) ColdReactive 04:16, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Actually, text-based base 64 encoding is MORE data per the same image than actual image data. Each byte of base-64 data holds 1/4 of the possible values that a byte of image data can hold (accounting for 6 bits as opposed to 8), hence for every 4 bytes of image data, there are 5 characters of base-64 data, meaning, more work all around. — Defender1031*Talk 09:31, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
I meant sent and received in terms of network bandwidth, not processing. ColdReactive 10:06, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes I know exactly what you meant, and you are still wrong. For every 4 bytes of image data transferred over the network, base-64 transfers 5 bytes. — Defender1031*Talk 10:38, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Creating Accounts is No Longer an Option?

I noticed while logging in today that the "log in/create account" button has been reduced to a "login" button, and the page no longer links towards any sort of ability to create a new account. What happened to it? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 06:51, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

We had to disable it temporarily due to a recent influx of spam accounts. When new countermeasures are created, we'll reactivate the new account making option. --DorianGray 07:00, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Featured content of the day (or whenever)

I've retired the featured articles and have set up the beginnings of an automatic list of daily featured H*R content. The format of this list will change, perhaps drastically, as we experiment with redesigning the entire main page. In other words, if you don't like the format right now, don't worry, it's a work in progress. — It's dot com 02:19, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm actually surprised they lasted through 2012. I've visited the wiki every Monday morning for the past year in hopes of updates, but without fail there was always a featured article. Thank you to those who stuck with it for so long. --Jellote wuz here 22:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
It's too bad there is nothing new on the H*R site to bring me here anymore. Thank you IDC for all your work of the years. The fact that your still here shows a lot of dedication. I R F 14:00, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
When I want my Homeschool Winner fix, I just come here and hit "Random" and go to some cartoon I haven't watched in five years (I go here rather than the Hamstar site itself because if I get something like Tapeleg I just hit Random again). But that's not what I wanted to say. What I wanted to say is while you're redesigning the front page, you might want to change "Recent changes" to "The latest changes" (I wouldn't call a year+ "recent"). Stev0 07:11, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
First of of all, wow, this is the first topic on this talk page in 7 months. Second of all, for how long will the featured articles be retired? Third of all, Stev0, do you mean Special:Recentchanges or the opening text in the "What's New?" section on the main page? Just kidding, I know you mean the latter, and yes, I think "The latest updates" makes more sense, too. RickTommy (edits) 07:36, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

possible update?

According to the Archive Wayback, There appears to have been an update on January 15, 2013, snd several others back in 2011 and 12... Or is it just me? 13:09, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

The Wayback Machine is not correlated to when an update was made. It takes a snapshot of what the web page looks like at that time and keeps it. The main page snapshots in 2013 all say "last updated 12-22-10". So there wasn't an update to the website on the dates you mentioned. The Knights Who Say Ni 17:11, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

We had this scare before. The BC seem to be too busy to update the site but as long as they have steady new day jobs the site will be up. Still, we better mirror everything just to be safe. Guybrush20X6 13:17, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Over the last 3 months or so, I have been copying the flash files for several of the toons (including ALL of SBemails) to a flash drive, via the "save target as" right-click command. So if the site goes down for good, I will have copies of all of my favorites's. 14:13, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Make sure to share them with us in the worst case senario. Guybrush20X6 13:12, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

You can copy them yourselves. All you have to do is right-click on the link for the flash file, then click "save target as" and choose a suitable location (I have mine on a 16GB flash drive.) It's that easy! 11:19, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Your Update Comment Here

When will Homestar Runner be updated once again? I'm just wondering! ;) -- 19:17, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

I reposted your comment here, I wasn't sure you knew where to put it and it deserves to be answered. Well, the answer is, Uh... We don't know. Am I right? Does anyone know? No, yeah, no—It kind of gets updated when they feel like it or when we "least expect it". That's why I joined the wiki, it gets me my hr fix. If they do update I hope to be the first to notice so I can post a hysterical misspelled message on this talk page. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 21:34, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

I have a funny feeling . . . soon . . . very soon . . . 15:55, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

I think if they updated they would prepare a really extravagant comeback that will make Weclome Back look like... Something funny... That isn't as extravagant. They couldn't just pop in and pretend there was no hiatus, it would have to be a big thing—like a holiday special or something, or a really well-thought-out sbemail written in that could coincidentally explain everything. You should make an account. It has benefits... But... I can't think of any of them now. Um... You can patrol edits? Anyway, if you did I could welcome you. I'm on the welcoming committee but no one ever joins these days so I haven't gotten to welcome anyone. --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 21:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Take it to the forum. And here are some benefits to creating an account. The Knights Who Say Ni 01:00, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason no one joins anymore is because THEY CAN'T!!! For some reason, the 'create account' link no longer exists. I would LOVE to create an account, and I love H*R, but it is impossible... Once the "create account" link is restored, if I don't have to send or receave any emails to do so (my parents are VERY strict about the emails I send, you know always standing over my shoulder and stuff), I will/would gladly make an account faster than you can/could say "Famous Ladies always like SBEmail". But, until then, I/you/we will just have to settle for 14:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC) (When and if I do get to make an account, my username will be Jdaniels15, though my handle will be ToaJuaraevo01)
The reason the method of creating accounts was changed was because up until the words were removed from next to "log in", we were having a lot of trouble with spambots creating accounts. We prefer that all of our accounts belong to people (with slight exceptions for the five bots that are run by admins). So they changed the method to ensure that a person was creating the account. Given that no spambots have created an account since then, the new method appears to be doing its job. And granted, it looks like there have been four total edits that were made by users who joined the wiki this way, and three of those four were to the sandbox. So yes, that is an unfortunate setback. However, just like anything else, there is no perfect way to handle the situation. In general, I prefer the old method of creating accounts, but I also like it when there aren't any spambots creating accounts every couple of hours. The Knights Who Say Ni 03:14, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I can understand that, Spambots are nothing to BLARG at (Not that I would know). I still like wikipedia's way of doing it, (and they don't seem to have any trouble with spambots, but why? The World May Never Know.) 11:30, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
As far as i know, wikipedia's way of dealing with spambots is having a huge active user base who monitors editing activity and quickly revert them. It'd be nice if this wiki had a huge user base, but unfortunately, it was never that big to begin with and most of the great users left as the hiatus lengthened. — Defender1031*Talk 12:19, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
So wait. Are you saying that there are no more great users on the wiki? . . . and that Broncotroll and TKWSN aren't great? They seem worthy of adminship to me . . If they aren't admins already. On a completely unrelated note, I think that I have been spending WAY too much time on the wiki: I am in college, and for one of my online discussion posts, one of my classmates pointed out that I was starting to sound like Strong Bad. And on a RELATED note: I do not like the visual word varification picture things. Sometimes you can hardly recognize the letters, and when you can they are often the letters that have identical capital and lower-case forms (I.E.: V, C, X, S, O, W, Z). It usually takes me 5-6 tries just to get one right. Desparately in need of a break, 13:33, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Woah, I didn't know that. That's not fair... especially because those imagecaptcha things are like impossible to read. Maybe if you contact an admin, (I recommend It's dot com as he is the main developer/the only active admin these days) and give them your username they could bypass the spambot security and set up your account. Big thanks for the compliment! I'm a very active but a relatively new user (most sysops joined around 2005 but I joined in 2011), I don't think I could handle being a sysop at this point but I've been learning the features pretty quickly. I was on long enough though to confirm that most of the eminent users have left, there are still some great users though. Defender actually taught me a lot about the wiki (albiet sarcastically) himself. There aren't very many active sysops though, we need more people with sysop privileges to combat spammers (but thankfully, since the hiatus, there aren't many of those as well). --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 14:16, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Anonny, look up the definition of "most". I did not say that those who are still present aren't great users, I said that most of those who were great users have left. Also, you're in college but your parents still monitor every email you send? That seems rather odd.
Broncotroll, I don't recall being sarcastic with you. To what are you referring? — Defender1031*Talk 14:54, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
I would like to point out that while Tom doesn't currently make many edits to the wiki, he does server maintenance and other stuff behind the scenes and is not at all inactive. Indeed it is he who usually creates new accounts these days. — It's dot com 15:06, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Hey, I complimented you! I didn't mean sarcastic... More like... Sardonic? You were never by any means rude, I just cant always tell if you're angry with me or not—it's confusing. You're a bit... Stolid at times.
I didn't mean to be rude about Tom, I didn't know he was active (hi Tom!)... Now I feel like he's watching me from behind the scenes... --Image:Homsariconformysig.gifBroncoTroll 20:53, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Entire Cast filmography

Here's an idea. For the cartoons that star the entire cast, I think that we should have a filmography category for all of them at once, instead of having one category for each. "ONE for ALL" and not "ALL for ONE". ToaJuaraevo01 File:Homsar-in-motion.gif 12:49, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

This seems less than ideal for searching, as that episode would then not show up on the character's individual filmography list. Additionally, there would need to be changes to the film template. An alternative idea, though: perhaps a separate "Toons featuring all 12 main characters" category in addition to the individual categories. --DorianGray 12:58, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Making userspace pages

Hello main-page... er... tasers... how do we make userspace pages? Like User:JohnDoe/Somekindapage 16:38, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

First you have to have an account. Send an email to with the username you want, and they'll give you the instructions on how to continue. Once you have an account, creating a user subpage is the same as creating a regular page; you just have to put it in the user namespace. But before you make a subpage, read this to make sure it's in line with the wiki's policies. What kind of a subpage would you like to create? The Knights Who Say Ni 19:32, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Image requests

When it comes to notice templates, the images have lost a little consistency. Our more recent templates use direct screenshots. Because the images aren't edited, some of the templates seem slightly unprofessional or the image appears misplaced.

These templates would look a little cleaner, in my opinion, if the images used were like the ones before them: edited and/or decompiled, with a healthy dose of alpha channel. I've not the resources on my end for such a task, so I'd like to list the images that could be replaced, not necessarily updated/reuploaded, in case someone shares my concerns or is otherwise interested. All of these might need a decompiler:

W00tstock 2013 / San Diego Comic Con

So I don't know how the whole update thingy works as I've been away from this site for a few years now.

But just a question.

Does this whole W00tstock/San Diego Comic Con sequence featuring Strong Bad and Homestar Runner count as an update of some kind? Heck, does it constitute its own page on this wiki? These are all questions with answers that are probably obvious but I'm a wee bit out of touch at the moment so you'll have to forgive me. It's just that after so long with us getting nothing regarding Homestar, not even a sniff, something as big as a public appearance at Comic Con would be a huuuuuuuuuuuuge deal.

Nevertheless, I just thought I should bring this to the attention of anyone who's more experienced than I am because frankly I've forgotten about how exactly this site works, unfortunately. But yeah! In terms of H*R news, it seems to be proof that the series isn't completely dead at least, and... yeah. I think I made myself clear enough here, haha.

According to the log in page, you can register by sending an email to the admin. I sent one around the end of last month, and I haven't gotten a reply or anything. Was there a hiccup in the system, or is the information outdated? -- 21:38, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

If you were the one that included an username (like the instructions say), check your inbox for an email. If you weren't, send another email with a username. -- Tom 02:34, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

What happened?

I haven't been able to get on for the last week, what happened? --ToaJuaraevo01 File:Homsar-in-motion.gif 15:54, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

No one else has reported a problem, and there have been edits to the wiki throughout the last week. What kind of error did you get? — It's dot com 16:07, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Maybe there's something wrong on my end. Sincerly, ToaJuaraevo01 File:Homsar-in-motion.gif 17:32, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, if logging in failed, what has happened instead when you tried to get on? The Knights Who Say Ni 18:42, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

About the user StrongbadfanEX

He has no contributions and the only people who have tried to edit his page are anonymous users. There's also a system message that indicates that the user account doesn't exist. Should it be deleted? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 16:02, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry about that. — It's dot com 23:22, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

I feel like such a hipocrit. A few days ago, I nominated the Homestar Runner page on for Deletion. Voting closes 10/9/2013, so there is still time to save it, if you hurry! --ToaJuaraevo01 File:Homsar-in-motion.gif 16:57, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

I don't especially care, but here's the link in case anyone else does. What would be needed to save that page? Adding links to all the toons each quote came from? — It's dot com 17:23, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
