Should knowledge base be capitalized?

I just noticed knowledge base was hyphenated in the welcome line and fixed that, but I also noticed it's capitalized in the browse box. I was going to be bold and lowercase it, but then I thought twice and figured I should ask. My inclination would be to uncapitalize it, but what do you think? — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 02:54, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

I was bold. ;) None of the other headings are title case; we should either change them all to title case or leave them all sentence case. — It's dot com 02:58, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
It's still hyphenated in the donation box. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Fixed. -- Tom 10:29, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
That one too, but I was referring to the main page bottom box, "If you've found this knowledge-base useful, please consider making a donation. Donations are used primarily to cover domain registration and hosting costs." Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 10:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Fixed. --phlip TC 11:32, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Haha, just as a side mention... Removing that hyphen from the donations box and replacing it with a space makes the two-pixel difference on my display, pushing it from a one line donation mention to a two line. Thunderbird 19:34, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

IRF the oracle

I just noticed that assuming TBC will keep with tradtion (not 100% since they didn't do a D'ween toon this year), the 150th email is scheduled at the same time as April fools. Perhaps those two themes will be tied together in sight unparalleled since tape leg. Me thinks next week will extra special in H*R land. I R F 19:35, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Woah.

The main page looks different to me did someone change it?

Yeah, look two or three sections up. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 01:20, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Metadata in image description pages

This edit just about takes the cake. I have absolutely no idea what E.L. Cool changed because I can't see it. The metadata is in the way. 1024x768 resolution tabs bar open in SeaMonkey and Modern Pinball skin applied. Any way we could fix this, or alternatively not display the metadata? I'm all for having to scroll left and right if it comes to that. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 05:38, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

This appears to be fixed in the next version of MediaWiki, or at the very least, with Wikipedia's current styling of the metadata. We should look into the difference between how we currently style it and how they do. -- Tom 10:43, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
You can see what they said by scrolling over the text and copying it to notepad. I R F 12:30, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps just putting clear:both under table.diff in Mediawiki:Monobook.css would do the trick? Which is to say that it would work, but I don't want to do it without knowing whether it would break anything. I doubt it would though. --phlip TC 12:42, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I thought we were looking at the actual description page and not the diff itself. Phlip, that does work, but wouldn't we want to move the metadata down instead of the diff? -- Tom 09:57, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Sorry to "butt" in, but wouldn't it perhaps be more prudent to simply prevent the metadata from appearing at all? Perhaps we have no choice but to have it appear. I just question the need of displaying the specific model of digital camera that was used to take a photograph or superfluous details such as "exposure bias" or "maximum land aperture". Pardon me if I seem a bit overzealous. —THE PAPER PREEEOW 08:17, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
The date is usually interesting, at least. Thunderbird 20:34, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
True, Thunderbird. But I question the accuracy when I see that you took this image more than three months prior to the event on 22 November 2005! —THE PAPER PREEEOW 21:24, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, that's just because I was too lazy to actually set the clock correctly on my camera. I'm sure TBC and affiliates are better about that kind of thing. ;) Thunderbird 23:23, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Left-handedness

Homestar plays lute and bass left-handed. What's Her Face also plays bass left-handed. Gregor is left-handed in "Everyone is Different". Notable? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 20:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm... Homestar doesn't exactly even have arms on the conventional sense. But yeah, interesting. As a side note, most Muppets are left handed. The puppeteer uses his right hand to operate the head while operating the arm rod with his left hand. But that doesn't really relate to anything here, just a comment about the prominence of left handed characters in general. Thunderbird 20:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
I think that Homestar and What's Her Face playing left-handed is just a minor mistake overlooked by TBC. And by the way, a better place for this kind of discussion is Category talk:Running Gags or Category talk:Inside Jokes. Has Matt? (talk) 22:13, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Recent Changes RSS

Okay. I just got an RSS reader, and, where is the feed located at? I tried the url of the rss link at the left od RC, but it isn't working. Help, at all? Bluebry 02:52, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Which RSS reader are you using, Bluebry? We use two different protocols for our feeds here, RSS and Atom. Most readers support both protocols these days, but if you've only tried one protocol and it isn't working, you may have better luck with the other protocol. I may be able to help further once I know which reader you're using. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 17:34, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
What is the point of viewing recent changes in RSS? --Dacheatbot · Communicate 17:47, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
That's a good question. I personally have never found it useful. It's probably used less for human consumption and more for other things like feeding recent changes to a maintenance bot, for instance, or having them show up in real time in a chat room. RSS is just a nice way of packaging the recent changes for use elsewhere. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 19:30, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
My reader is an expansion to Firefox, called Sidekik. I've tryed both RSS and Atom on it. Ima try a new RSS reader. Bluebry 01:07, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Watchlist

This is kinda wierd, but I'm sure somebody has an explanation;

I just went in to edit the items on my watchlist, and I found 2 pages listed that not only don't exist, but I did not put on my watchlist:

  • Briefs on briefs on briefs on briefs on briefs on briefs, Wayne Rooney thinks you're all freaking sick oddballs who ********** over George W. Bush in his underwear, plus $20,000
  • Willy on Wheels on Wheels, on wheels

The second one thinks that this is just a type of vandalism. Is there any way to protect against it? -AtionSong 03:25, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

What must have heppened: some vandal moved a page you were watching to that name. Then it was deleted and recreated for any of a number of reasons. There's no one hacking into your Watchlist, rest assured - the hacking was done to the page you had set to watch. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:36, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Right. If you're watching "Page A" and it gets moved to "Page B", then now you're automatically watching both the old name "Page A" and the new name "Page B". If a vandal moves "Page A" to "Page A ON WHEELS", you end up watching both of those pages too. Even after the visible damage is reverted and the extra page is deleted, "Page A ON WHEELS" will still show up in your full watchlist as a red link. — It's dot com 03:41, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. It turns off both were moves of this page itself. In the future, I'll just delete these links. -AtionSong 03:46, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Why can't I edit the main page?

Well anyway, the "Bear Holding a Shark T-Shirt" link needs to be change on account of the reorganized store section. Could someone please change the link to "http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Store_T-Shirts#tshirt_bear-shark" Thanks! Jecowa 06:35, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Done. BTW, when you need to change something in the "What's new" section of the Main Page, you actually need to edit Template:whatsnew. That's where the text in that part of the page is. You can't edit the Main Page because it's protected so that only sysops can edit it. We do this to prevent vandalism on the Main Page, our most visible page. Heimstern Läufer 06:39, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the help and info. Jecowa 07:00, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
We've added this info to the standard welcome message. Hopefully that will help get the word out. — It's dot com 10:54, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps a little inconspicuous edit link in the what's new template wouldn't go astray? I've seen a few wikis where the main page is full of templates, and they often have an edit link on each one... --phlip TC 11:00, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
We tried that once, and it just opened the door back up. Apparently it wasn't inconspicuous enough. I think enough people know about how to update it that we don't need to change anything. — It's dot com 11:11, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Interesting...What Does this Mean?

Last night, I way playing the Dancing Bubs game on H*R. Today I went on, and two of the songs weren't working. I checked, and the swf files of the music had been deleted. Do you think that this could mean anything? -AtionSong 15:49, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Dancin' Bubs is working fine for me. Server may have just been having issues. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 16:04, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, Secret Pages tend to get low bandwidth and frequently appear to be deleted when they're not. For some reason, some of the songs in Dancin' Bubs are included in that. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:07, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
Those two songs seem to be 404 on occasion... without knowing technical details of TBC's hosting setup, it's difficult to know why. Though if I had to guess, I'd say that they might have two servers that they serve the files from, and the songs are missing on one... this could also explain why the .exe versions of take-a-break.exe and the screensavers don't always work, one of the servers could be configured differently to the other for .exe files. This is complete speculation, however, we know nothing about H*R.com's internal structure. --phlip TC 16:16, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

WikkiTikkiTavi

So... are we reverting to WikkiTikkiTavi permanently or temporarily? And can someone give us a specific reason why the change was made? Has Matt? (talk) 05:06, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

The MediaWiki software was getting too complicated and difficult to maintain. -- Tom 05:06, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, Has Matt?, didn't you read the memo? — Lapper (talk) 05:09, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
I read the memo, but I was looking for a more specific cause. If it's some kind of secret we're not supposed to know, that's OK with me. Has Matt? (talk) 05:13, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

April Fools. SaltyTalk! 05:11, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

We haven't finished moving everything to the WikkiTikkiTavi version yet. Keep your pants on, Has Matt? :) —FireBird|Talk 05:16, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
In fact, it might be week or so before we can get to the Fanstuff. In the meantime, we plan on taking it offline in a day or two. — It's dot com 05:36, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Nope, this is real, Salty. I saw them working on it a few days ago, and asked It's Dot Com about it, suspecting vandalism. He explained it all to me, and I support the decision fully. It's not as pretty, but if it works, and it's less of a drain on the server... -YK 06:10, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to everyone for the lack of notice, but MediaWiki was getting so unweildy we decided to just go through with the regrade before really preparing the community. The admins and sysops have been discussing this for a few months in Da Basement (it's all been archived by now, but you'll find it there if you look). We decided to do this now for three reasons: (1) MediaWiki has way too many SQL tables. That was creating a lot of unnecessary overhead and it was really starting to tax the server. 'Tavi has a smaller database, so it should work better. (2) MediaWiki is really designed for multi-server load balancing systems like Wikipedia. After using it for over a year now we've become painfully aware just how kludgy MediaWiki is when it's running on a single server like ours. 'Tavi should be able to handle our single-server system much better. (3) Surprisingly, MediaWiki had no optimization of it's X32 page caching, which was really starting to eat up a lot of space on our server. 'Tavi recently rolled out better X45 page caching that looks to revolutionize the wiki market. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other wikis switch to 'Tavi now that 'Tavi has stepped it up a notch. Again, sorry for the short notice, but we felt we had to do it now before MediaWiki crashed the server and caused unrecoverable data loss. If you have any more specific questions about the regrade, feel free to ask them here or on the FAQ talk page. Cheers! — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:20, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

You guys see? this is why we need a New Server, from what i understand, we need more servers to be able to run on Media wiki. oi, we should have another fund raiser for another Server. man this Sux. ---COLA 05:35, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
We're planning a pledge drive in May, but I don't think it's really a good use of funds to buy a second server when we don't get nearly enough traffic to need one. I think using 'Tavi will alleviate the problems we've been having for the foreseeable future. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 05:39, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah Choc-O, with this switch we should be able to eliminate enough Server stress to sell half of our server to the Klingons or something. ŢɦųηɗəřÞìɤɖ 08:02, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Can we at least change the interface back? --The Real Zajac 00:57, 1 Apr 2006 (PST)
Nope, sorry. This is the only working interface we have on WikiTikkiTavi. We're currently working on extensions to make it look a little cleaner, but it may be a few months before they're ready. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 09:05, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

That's too bad guys. Us sysops discussed this a few days ago, and I'm fully supportive of this move. We can still do everything he did before, the inconvenience isn't that bad, is it? It might seem a little awkward at first, but in a few days it should be natural. Give the Tavi a chance... this is still the same wiki. - Joshua 12:46, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Becuase it can't load the skin, all I get is an error message: Fatal error: Class skinchick: Cannot inherit from undefined class skintemplate in /home/hrwiki/public_html/skins/Chick.php on line 21. At least I can edit anonomously. If this is an April Fools joke, than it should be OK. When reverts back to normal tomorrow, I can change back to normal from my preferences menu. But if this is for real (which I refuse to believe), then I guess I'll be leaving. I can't work on here, annonumously on a horrendous layout. 81.159.210.246 16:31, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

To all those who are talking about leaving, I'm deeply saddened that you would jump ship without really giving this a chance. I don't know how many of you were around when we first switched away from 'Tavi to MediaWiki, but it wasn't exactly a walk in the park then, either. Everybody had to log in about five times before they could edit pages, and we were listed on Google as "Uncle Hamstring's Barn Yard Animals" for about three months until Google's algorithm caught up with our new format. I promise if you'll all be patient, we'll have this new system looking like the old layout in no time at all. I think we could have everything back to normal by, say, September at the latest. In the meantime, it would be really helpful if everyone could stay calm. — wikisig.gif Joey (talk·edits) 20:00, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

so the snippit in the code telling MEDIAWIKI to load a skin that LOOKS LIKE WTT, a skin that was NEVER ON HERE BEFORE is leftover, yet is BEING USED RIGHT NOW. that code is a snippet telling mediawiki to load up this skin, which means that this is mediawiki and that you're asking it to load this skin. Recent events

I'm not sure why I'm putting this in the Main page talk. But then, I'm not sure about many, many things in my life. That's probably because I'm mentally unstable. Anyhoo, I've gotta tell you all something:

I've seen the wiki go through a lot of things. Things that have shaped our wiki forever. I've seen the downfall of guestbooks, NSMC, Yeltensic, The main page update (like Wikipedia's new update), and much more. Through it all, the wiki users have been amazing. They've held through it all and represented their wiki the best way they could. I just sat back the whole time, amazed. These users were obviously some of the best people anyone will ever know, I thought. I was always astounded.
A few weeks ago, I left the wiki. I knew it was a bad decision, but I still left. I was isolated from the outright coolness of all my friends and enemies alike here. I seeked refuge at the fanstuff wiki. I became a powerful user there. It was almost as good as the knowledge base. To make things even better, some of my best friends were there. So I was happy. I never looked at the wiki again, except for some times when I had heard of something I needed to take care of from the fanstuff wiki.
Last night, I heard the wiki was regrading its systems and that it would have a temporary lockdown. I hopped on over here to see what it would be like. It seemed very exciting to me. Soon, I could not edit any pages. It was very entertaining. But when I tried to cut and paste a quote, I found that I was editing the software only known to me as old.hrwiki.org. It was crazy. I was spellbounded. After all, the wikitikitavi software had never been editable to me. I loved it. I thought that Tom and/or JoeyDay had redirected the wiki temporarily to its older state while the real one was regrading. I took advantage of this, and edited frivolously. I soon went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I found out the software was permanently changed, as did many wiki users. I was shocked.
I knew, however, that I must stay longer to investigate. It was starnge to me that it had happened so quickly without warning. But unlike others, I held on. I made sure wiki users got into the new software comfortably. Now 2 of my best friends are gone. It really does suck. But I encourage you, fellow wikiers, to hold on and sit tight. Your beloved wiki will be better. It will get better, believe me. If you continue to immaturely act defiant, you will destroy the wiki. All of the cool users I knew and admired will go. And that will be a sad thing indeed.
Please, save the wiki. Keep editing, keep making this place better and better. It will continue to grow and flourish like it used to. It will be the finest wiki ever. Even better than Wikipedia. Don't lose hope because the software is "unfamiliar". All of your people are still familiar, and they still stand by your side.
