[edit] Took a Stab

I took a stab at describing this, and I could only remember four instances off the bat. --Jnelson09 20:56, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

So, I'm not gonna nominate this for deletion yet, but I am gonna ask, do people think that this is important enough to document? Dagron 20:17, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it should be refined a little bit. It should only include unusual instances, which would be evidenced by weird grammar ("a bigger waste of not water", for example). "Are you ever not running out of ink" just doesn't fit. --DorianGray 20:20, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I agree that "Are you ever not running out of ink" is a not good example, but I think the page otherwise should be in the "Not to be deleted" list. --Jay o'Lantern (Haunt) 06:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. There are several instances that are remarkable enough to make a page of, I think. --DorianGray 06:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] inclusion

Okay, so I agree that the little girl one is the only one I removed which clearly doesn't fit. I'll go ahead and address the others:

marzipan: The page talks about context. While "not" is used ingrammatically, the context doesn't seem odd. He's clearly just trying to make a confusing use of multiple negatives. It's not exactly the same gag.
carve-nival and other days: It seems to me hard to determine the grammatical intent of a single noun being negated (admittedly, this objection is dubious)
personal favorites: This is similar, but it's different, because like the little girl one, it's negating an adjective. While it does follow the "Not X" pattern, it doens't seem ungrammatical at all. DAGRON 07:57, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dagron, I'm not sure if you were using the same or a different computer, but if you were using the same one, checking "remember me when I login" box (wording isn't exact) might help prevent such problems. Also, adding your signature to the end of your text would make it easier for readers to determine where your text ends. Anyway:

  • marzipan - I agree, it's just used to confuse Strong Bad.
  • carve-nival and other days - I disagree. First, notice that "Not Last" is used in the article's picture. It is in fact a very good example of the gag this article documents. Also, "not swim practice" is actually an awkward formulation of the phrase when used by itself (like in the email).
  • personal favorites is a little borderline. While "not new" is valid and used in everyday language, it is never used to describe an item in a sensionalistic way.
  • Marshie vs. Little Girl is actually borderline as well. The way she words it gravitates more towards the awkward. I'm not sure yet but it probably deserved re-inclusion.

So I'll go ahead and remove marzipan but keep the rest. Like I mentioned, I might reintroduce the little girl if it warrants it. --Stux 08:31, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I have "remember me" on but I was on a different computer momentarily. I moved the sig as well. So, the thing about little girl one, is that if it's intended to mean "stuff that is scary, and stuff that is not scary," then her "scary stuff and not scary stuff" is grammatical, but I do agree that her wording doesn't necessarily guarantee that that's the case. Anyway, thanks for takin' the time to discuss 'em. DAGRON 08:58, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I disagree on marzipan; Strong Bad was deliberately using it to confuse Marzipan, but the second "Not" (the one immediately prior to his own name) sounds almost random. One generally uses the word "not" as a not adjective. --Jay o'Lantern (Haunt) 11:02, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
That said, Carve-nival and other days are clear cases of this gag and should be not removed. Not opinion on the remainder of the objected issues. --Jay o'Lantern (Haunt) 11:05, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Little Girl is out of place here. She is talking like a kid, and ad libbing. If she were doing TBC's script which said to say that, it would be notable. As it is, I doubt it is. So I removed it. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:26, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I entirely agree. Trey56 22:27, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Who said the Little Girl isn't reading off a script? --Trogga 02:18, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

To argue the inclusion of another, "Strong Bad is not just standing on a stool" is grammatical. (Not MS Paint is good, tho). -DAGRON 00:11, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Scope

A DeFender edit summary seems to suggest that this list exists for 'instances where Not X is used as its own noun. If that is the case (as DeFender has edited the opening paragraph to suggest) then Pumpkin Carve-nival, personal favorites, Kid Speedy, looking old, Jibblies 2, and nightlife no longer apply. I'm changing the description back to the old text, but it still begs the question "What is the intended scope of this page" — Flashfight 10:20, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

umm... those all still apply. "last" is a placement in a competition, "not last" is being used in the same way, likewise, "new" is used to describe- oh wait... i get what you're saying. these are verbs and adjectives. okay. Maybe "noun" wasn't the best way for me to put it, it's more like, when used in a context that X alone would normally be used and they just add "not" to make it the opposite, rather than saying it in the way a normal person would say it, that's what i think the intended scope is. If someone could word that more better so we can put it on the page, that'd be cool. — Defender1031*Talk 13:17, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Incomplete?

It's too bad that little message at the bottom doesn't say "This is a not complete list" or somesuch. ;) Nyperold 20:16, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maybe X?

Thought just occurred to me: would Maybe X be a good page, or a category on this one? I can think of two ("maybe ladies" in Environment, and "maybe fighting for freedom" in the Cheat Commandos theme song as heard in a Quote of the Week) but I suspect there are others... --Maybe Jay o'Lantern (Haunt) 02:40, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Maybe. =] OptimisticFool 02:52, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
There are plenty of these. (In myths & legends: "Maybe Red Rover") You could make a page from these, but gathering all the appearances is going to be tough and I'm not sure if anyone would want a list of these. Philip8o 20:51, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
