Stun, that, and the other thing

Ok, where in Star Wars is "set ___ on stun" used? I missed that. And do other sci-fi instances merely stack up to be references to Star Trek themselves? - Qermaq - (^T/C)  18:30, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Opening scene of a new hope, stormtroopers set to stun leah... Did you even read Trey's edit summary, and as for the other ones, no. I don't think they're referencing star trek, i think they're just using weapons that have the option of not killing their target. DeFender1031 18:32, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

"Did you even read Trey's edit summary" You know, that's a little arrogant. I eventually did while researching and acting. What I'm saying is that "set phasers to stun" is very Star Trek. It's a really closely related and associated phrase. I'm saying that there's a strong argument that all uses of "set ___ to stun are directly or indirectly referencing Star Trek. - Qermaq - (^T/C)  18:37, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

I agree with DeFender on this one. A Google search for "set to stun" star trek turns up slightly more results than "set to stun" star wars, but there are enough mentions of setting to stun in both to make it TTATOT. — Has Matt? (talk) 18:55, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

No, i do not believe so, i think it was a concept that was borrowed for the purpose of, as i said before, having weapons that wouldn't kill. DeFender1031 19:18, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

I added the fact back in after initially removing it because although I'm very ignorant of most things Star Trek, a couple people I spoke to assured me that it was a very prevalent concept in the series, to the extent that any reference to "setting [sci-fi weapon] to stun" is very likely a reference to Star Trek. The Star Wars instance may or may not be a reference itself, but the key is that it's such a minor occurrence in the movie that people are unlikely to be thinking of SW when they talk about setting their weapons to stun.

So, I don't know much about Star Trek, but I buy the reasoning that this is probably a Star Trek reference. Trey56 20:13, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
