Quote of the Week Talk: Current | Messages 1-50 | Messages 51-100

Ding! Quote of the Week is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Ja What?

...all right, I've removed that silly "Ja" fact like, three times, and it keeps getting added back. What *is* the big deal here? Considering it's not actually a real word, and that Schenkel McDoo's grasp of the English language is tenuous at best, this fact seems pointless and demeaning. Should we put a fun fact in buried about how when he says "Yold Ones Vry" at the end, he actually means "Cold Ones Dry"? Some of these so-called "facts" are so ridiculously nitpicky it's not funny. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 23:53, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Are you aware of the linguistic relation between /y/ and /j/? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 23:55, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Ja, but that's really not the issue. "Yah" is perfectly acceptable; I've seen it spelled this way before. It isn't a glaring error that especially needs to be pointed out, because it's really not much more "incorrect", IMO, than Catsup/Ketchup. But let's be serious here. When you consider McDoo uses "Yah" in another line along with "Yold Ones Vry", which isn't proper grammar no matter *how* you look at it, it seems, as I said, excessively nitpicky. That, and I think TBC is allowed to make their characters talk as they want. But eh. -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 00:00, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Apart from YK's rant, he has a point. It borders on speculation to assume that he was actually saying "ja". Admittedly, a word meaning "yes" fits there, and he does have a foreign name and accent ("Ja" actually means "yes" in at least 7 languages [1], most notably German - which would also match his accent). In my opinion, it's speculation, and a discussion here on the talk page is all the documentation we need. Loafing 00:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
...this wouldn't be the first time I've complained about some of us being a tad bit too nitpicky here... -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 00:11, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Given that Taranchula are clearly portrayed as Scandinavian, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to speculate that they were saying "ja". I wouldn't call spelling it "yah" a goof, but I think noting that the real Scandinavian word is "ja" is worthwhile. Heimstern Läufer 04:24, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Oops, I didn't know they were Scandinavian. OK, now the fact makes perfect sense and it should be noted somewhere! Loafing 05:39, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Marshieween

I think the quote's from Marshieween. Awexome 22:25, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

help with syncing

I can't get the quotes to sync from itunes to my ipod. anyone know how to do that? --Shaggy 18:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Quote download

Am I alone in this? I tried to listen to the QOTW (Sweetness Sweetness) but I cannot get it to play. I have a new computer, but the archived MP3's work fine, just not the one on the official site. Any ideas? (Windows Vista) Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:14, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

You having trouble with Hear It or Get It? (I have Vista, and I can get both to play just fine.) --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:17, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm running into some weirdness too. I go to the main page, and the current quote of the week is the grocery list thing ("Amazing thing, amazing thing," etc.). If I follow the link from the wiki to Strong Sad's "Sweetness, Sweetness" quote, I get a blank black page titled "Oops! You bwoke it." I suspect it may have been taken down? --DeathbyChiasmus 02:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm having the same problem (Mac OS X 10.5.x). I've even tried using a different browser and clearing cache. I am wondering if there is some weird cacheing somewhere along the line, rather than a local problem. wbwolf (t | ed) 03:11, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Same problem here. Windows XP, btw. But by doing proxy surfing I was able to hear it. Strange, strange, strange. Even hours later I can't get to http://www.homestarrunner.com/weeklies/ss_sweetness.mp3. It just tells me I bwoke it. =] OptimisticFool 07:00, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm still getting a 404 from it, too.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 04:55, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Jay: On the site it works great. From this article it does not. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 05:43, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
I cannot see the new QotW on the official site at all. It's still Homestar's grocery list. I've cleared my cache twice.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 07:22, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
I am having the same problem as bassbone, i've cleared my cache 3 times but it's still the grocery list. it works fine in my PS3 web browser, but not my PC. hazzard4123 17:23, 21 June 2008
Well, I guess whatever happened is over now. MichaelXX2 01:44, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
This all seems to be more evidence for my theory that H*R is hosted on more than one server, with a load-balancer or something, and they don't always keep them in sync properly... things like this, the lime in Let us give TANKS!, passwords on .exe files like the screensavers... sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, depends what server you're hooked up to. --phlip TC 08:57, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

"if" vs. "of it"

I think that we should still put "of it" instead of "it" in the newest QotW because that is what Bubs said. The Brothers Chaps of course didn't mean to put "if". Plus I already mentioned this mistake in Goofs. Homestar-Winner (talk) 19:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Archive?

This page is getting awfully long. 73 kilobytes, to be exact. Should we employ some archiving here? I was thinking a style similar to the Weekly Fanstuff or Sketchbook. --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 01:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

It's been mentioned before here. Heimstern Läufer 01:08, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Newest quote mirror

A message mainly for Tom, did you know that there still is no mirror mp3 of the newest Crack Stuntman quote? Homestar-Winner (talk) 02:56, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Get Smart Reference?

"We are just talkin' about Bubs with a piece of paper stapled to his face, right?" — In the recent Get Smart movie, Agent 23, played by The Rock, staples a piece of paper to another agent's face. I think this may well be a reference, though it's hard to prove it. — Defender1031*Talk 20:06, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, this quote seems to be a Happy Dethemberween blooper, which was made before Get Smart came out. So, this would be very unlikely. Homestar-Winner (talk) 20:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps. But i have long felt that it's possible that some of the supposed "outtakes" are actually made after the fact. — Defender1031*Talk 21:33, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Mmm, I dunno. And so, any thinking so would just be speculation, right? Homestar-Winner (talk) 02:36, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Alternate link

I already did this, but is it okay to put up an alternate link to download the fist two QOWs with since we have no mirror to it? MichaelXX2 18:46, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

I removed them. As before, I doubt the authenticity of those recordings. The quality is very poor, lower than in the actual toons themselves. They appear to be recorded by someone other than the The Brothers Chaps. How did you find them? Do you know their source? -- Tom 19:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I recorded them myself. I thought they might be of assistance since we don't have a link...

Download Help

I can't get any of these to download because I have Quicktime, which only allows downloads through a paid version that I don't have. Anyone know how to make Quicktime NOT the default download choice? Shaggy, who is currently not signed in.

If you right-click on the links in the list here, you should get a menu that you can choose "Save link" or "Save target" or similar... that should save straight to disk, rather than going through QuickTime. As for disabling QT completely (so that you could download them from the H*R site, for instance), I'm not sure... but it'd help to know what version of QuickTime you have, which browser (Internet Explorer? Firefox? Which version?) and which OS (Windows? Mac? Linux? Again, which version?). --phlip TC 07:05, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

It's QT version 7.5.5, Internet Explorer, and WindowsXP. And the "Save target" worked, so thanks :)--Shaggy | talk 08:07, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Quote of the a few weeks

Has anyone noticed that the gaps btw qods are getting bigger? Seriously, they haven't changed it since, what, like Nov. 20? 'Tsup widdis?--Lifty Fernandez

It's most probably the same as any of the other delays in emails and toons and so on: working on the game or the recent DVD. --DorianGray 22:07, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

People have also noticed that the current quote is broken and has been for weeks, right? On the day the quote was originally going to have been switched out there was indeed a new quote there, briefly. Strangely it switched back within 6 hours and broke itself, and it hasn't been tended to since. --74.170.121.220 22:17, 14 January 2009 (EST)

Best quote of the week ever

Which quote of the week do you think is the coolest? Vote now, to stop this raging conflict. P.S. My favorite is "the hold music" from isp

Take this to the forum. And it's seriously not noice to lie about raging conflicts. BBG 00:29, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Quote of the Week "exclusive"

Should we really call every quote that seems to be an outtake of some toon but we can't tell which toon an "exclusive" quote? Most of what are currently known as QotW Exclusives seem to be outtakes. I think we should change them all to "Unknown", except for a few that really are exclusive quotes, like "This is the Quote of the Day!" one. Homestar-Winner (talk) 23:50, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah. These quotes are probably all being produced for some-or-other toon; we just don't know which ones. Is there any room for speculation? For example, a recent filename was "patcheer_yearbook.mp3", suggesting that it came from TGS14 and that the guy was Patchbeard. In this particular case, I wouldn't have realized this unless someone had suggested it. — It's dot com 01:34, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
I read that as "Pat Cheer yearbook" implying that it's some guy named pat. Still, it's clearly a yearbook inscription and thus clearly from TGS 14. — Defender1031*Talk 11:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Patchbeard. Still speculation. Still works. — It's dot com 20:44, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
So does anyone object to changing all of the "Quote of the Week exclusive"s to "Unknown"s? Homestar-Winner (talk) 21:02, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

How much xanthan gum can a fella take?

Would anyone be interested in adding "bulgar" and "xanthan gum" in the Explanations section? --69.19.14.29 15:41, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Career Day?

This weeks quote of the week sounds suspiciously like an outtake or deleted scene from Career Day, rather than a quote of the week exclusive. —Guard Duck talk 00:09, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

It could be, in theory, but where's the evidence? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 00:28, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Sounds to me like Homestar is answering one of Marzipan's questions asked during class. Homestar-Winner (talk) 00:58, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
I would have to agree; the general tone of Homestar's voice (more childish than usual) as well as what he's saying (also more childish than usual) suggests it. --97.113.163.224 05:49, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
It doesn't sound overly childish to me... no more so than usual anyway... — Defender1031*Talk 06:29, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
I thought it was an outtake for Main Page 20. — It's dot com 19:53, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

One List

The quote of the week page was recently split into several pages for each year (like the Sketchbook and Weekly Fanstuff pages), but I believe it should remain as one long list (okay, technically two, but on one page). The quotes page, while moderately long, is not unbearably so, and the benefits of having all the quotes on one page far outweigh any page-length concerns. Most important is the fact that the tables can be sorted for easy searching and comparison of quotes over several years. (The sketchbook and weekly fanstuff pages are different in that there is no need to sort the tables, and the graphics take up much more space per entry.) — It's dot com 01:02, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

But what about browsers that can't edit pages as long as Quote of the Week? It is just as helpful having the list broken up, if not more. --Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 13:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Frankly, that seems to be spurious argument. While MediaWiki does complain when a page is too long, I'm not aware of any browser that cannot outright edit the page. The notice is more about a warning to make sure that data is properly kept track of. However, given the layout and nature of the page, I lean towards keeping it as is. wbwolf (t | ed) 14:14, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Then if you wanna keep the QOTW as a long list, then why is the fanstuff divided?--Record307 Talk/Contribs 15:05, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Because not dividing the Weekly Fanstuff would mean having to temporarily download hundreds of images of every single fanstuff that's ever existed from the server every time you just wanted to see the latest fanstuff. It's easier on your internet connection and speeds up your page viewing if you only need to download the year's fanstuff so far (a fraction of the total), rather than all the fanstuff so far. The Quote of the Week article contains only a dozen or so Character Heads so the images load pretty quickly. The text itself doesn't actually take long to appear in your browser so the amount of text isn't the issue here. But I wonder if the tables could be split up according to year? That way, you would have the choice to only edit the table of the corresponding year in which the quote appeared, instead of the entire table we have at the moment. – The Chort 18:47, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Breaking it into separate tables would negate the advantage of having them on a single page, namely sorting, as dot com mentioned above. For example, you can sort by the character head, effectively allowing you to easily see all the quotes from a specific character, or by source to group them that way, etc. 64.198.255.1 19:49, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Do you know how much stuff we would have to change template wise to make this big move work out? MichaelXX2 mail_icon.gif link_icon.gif 20:28, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Single duece list! It is easier and no known computer used today (besides the Lappy) is not strong enough to load this page.
As I've said before, the 32kb thing is just a benchmark, nothing more. On Wikipedia, IIRC that message doesn't even mention that some browsers might have problems, or even include the word "Warning". We probably should change the message here to match.
Fanstuff and Sketchbook it makes sense to split up, 'cause each row has its own image... if that was all in one page, there'd be several hundred images to download when you open the page (just look at how long it takes to load, say, Floppy Disk Container over a dialup connection... a one-page Fanstuff or Sketchbook would take even longer to load). The gains you get from paginating those outweigh the loss of sorting... and there's not much to sort on there, anyway. QotW doesn't have that problem - each row has an image, but they're smaller and heavily reused (it only needs to load SB's head once, for instance). And there's more use to be gained from having it all in one sortable table - the "Character head", "Quote" and "Source" columns can all be sorted to group the quotes by the face, who's talking, or which toon it's from.
So, in short: QotW doesn't have the problems that Fanstuff and Sketchbook have that made splitting those pages a good idea, and it does have features that would be made worse by splitting it up. So don't. --phlip TC 23:17, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Forreally One List

Since the one-list discussion has come up again, how about the other side... What do people think about merging the two lists into one? Just leaving the "Head" column blank for the quotes before they were added... --phlip TC 09:43, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

They're two file types, .zip and .mp3. It's easier to have them in two lists. --Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 12:07, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
