Ding! Random Toon is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Contents

Random.bat

Anybody notice that the sbemail random button doesnt seem to work now? It chooses a random toon but doesnt do the roulette wheel stuff.

If you mean it works, but the scroll-bar neglects to center the selection as it moves, yeah. Same with me. Odd, eh?

It works now, somehow. SaltyTalk! 02:29, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Enough?

Is there really enough for a whole page here? — It's dot com 05:00, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Oh I think so. Are any toons excluded? How does this work? Any glitches or whatnot? I'm quite sure this'll answer alot of questions. Begining with the one I posed down below... Thunderbird 05:02, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I agree now. — It's dot com 06:00, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Question

Why does the Updates page say added to Main Pages and Strong Bad Emails? I only see a button on the main page. Could somebody clarify this for me? Thanks. Thunderbird 05:02, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Click on the "random.bat" in the upper right hand corner of the sb_email menu to start a roulette. 7omεpsilon
Oh, my cashe wasn't cleared. A little 'F5' did the trick, thanks. Thunderbird 05:08, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It didn't seem to properly load Labor Dabor (Puppet Stuff).--Dwedit 05:23, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Too short

The text box in the random toon thing on the main pages is too short for some of the toon names - is this notable enough to go in the article? --phlip TC 06:47, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Probably. What do they do, just cut off the name, or abbreviate them? And can you list any of the toon names this happens to? Thunderbird 12:06, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

It cuts them off. (i.e. Strong Bad Is In Jail Cartoo) - Joshua

Exhaustive List:

at least, I'm pretty sure it's exhaustive... --phlip TC 13:41, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, that'll do nicely for a begining list. Thunderbird 16:05, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Hey, they're fixing these. I haven't seen all of them, but now they use "Strong Bad is in Jail" I'll go look for more. - Joshua

Fixed ones so far:

  • Strong Bad is in Jail
  • Tropical Lazor Beams
  • Sweet Cuppin Cakes Dween
  • Teen Girl Squad Dween
  • Bad Jokes
  • Vitamins/Celebrities
  • Mission Control
  • House ... Sucky Treats
  • Peasant's Quest Trailer
  • HomestarRunner.com Pay+
  • H*R Presents: Presents

This is interesting. - Joshua

Please don't edit the main article... I'm working on it. - Joshua
I'm assuming that's ↑ out of date. There's no timestamp. — It's dot com

If the graphic accompanying the toon is correct, then Yello Dello just barely doesn't fit. Not even half the -O is missing. I don't think this qualifies as being too long, because it's still completely readable. — It's dot com 17:46, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm unsure about it. But it does still get cut off. - Joshua 18:04, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Added

The button was added to main page 22, no word on virus yet...

Not here it hasn't (yes I've tried emptying the cache) - you do know it was talking about the little navbar down the bottom, not the R at the top, right? (though Virus doesn't have one of those either) --phlip TC 08:26, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I wouldn't expect it to be added in either. The main navbar at the bottom is one flash file linked to from all (most) pages, as are the now 4 buttons at the top of main pages. In mp22 and virus, the navbar is not separate, since it interacts with the main toon. They'd have to go back and edit both mp22 and virus to add that 'rando' link.

the random toon link is on main page 22 but it's not in the virus e-mail(I checked 3 seconds before typing this.)-Anonomys 00:45, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
No, it's not. Were you thinking of the random link at the top of the main page? Because main page 22 does not have updated navbar. Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 01:23, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

XML Comment?

Does anybody remember exactly what it said? It might be kinda neat to add the working of the note. I know I'm curious what it said... Thunderbird 16:06, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

There was only one comment in the one I downloaded (other than the section headers), and it read: <!--note to add puppet dween!-->. — It's dot com 16:33, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, ADD'D! Thunderbird 16:43, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

"Rando"?

What's up with the name of the "rando" link? The only thing i can think of was on an episode of MST3K once, where during the credits there was a person named Rando and Tom Servo kept going on about "The Amazing Rando!". But i have no idea what else it could be in reference to...or why they would do that. --Duke33 17:32, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Maybe "Random" Wouldn't fit? :) Seriously though, beat's me. Why Decemberween? Why Arrow'd? Could just be good ol' brother's chaps. Thunderbird 17:50, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I also immediately thought of The Amazing Rando from MST3K. I wouldn't be surprised if it were a reference, but not certain enough to add a Fun Fact. — InterruptorJones 23:02, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Just for anyone interested, here's some "Amazing Rando" soundbytes: mst3k wavs. Looks like the Amazing Rando (Rando Schmook) was a set designer on MST3k - The Movie. Too bad this is all pure speculation, and not enough to warrant being a legit fact.--Duke33 13:35, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I also think it's a reference to Amazing Rando (who once did battle with Eastman!). There was the Tom Servo in "A Jorb Well Done," so TBC probably do watch MST3K... Homestar Coderhomestar-coder-sig.gif 22:05, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

TBC also referenced MST3K in an interview. (trogga)

Ding~!

Is it just me, or does the sound that the Main Page's selector make when it lands on one sound kinda fammiliar? I can't put my finger on anything, but I swear I've heard either that sound or a very similar one in something else.

And yes, I'm aware that this kind of sound effect is fairly genetic. But this particular one still sounds very fammiliar.

-GG Crono

I want to say that it is similar to the sound effects from Street Fighter 2, when you enter another credit and continue the game...Or something like that. --Duke33 13:31, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)
It's definitely from a video game. I think it's the sound from Metal Gear for NES when you start a new game.. it's some sort of "game start"/"character selection" sound from some game. socetew 10.17.5

I just checked on ROMs of both Street Fighter 2 and Metal Gear that I had handy. The sound is quite similar to the Metal Gear one, but still distinct from both of 'em. It's definately in that vein, though. -67.22.197.57

Random Email

  • Anyone else not see the Random Email feature? I see the random toon one, just not the email version. I use Mozilla, and my Internet Explorer has it on there... what's going on? Is it just me not knowing about computers? --MrsCommanderson 23:42, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
    • Same thing happened to me. Try clearing the cashe, (Ctr + F5), on the Strong Bad Email Menu, and look in the top right. If you have the new Scroll Button Rap, then it should be there. Thunderbird 23:45, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
      • Weird, I tried and it didn't work... have any other ideas? Thanks. =) (Never mind, got it! Thanks one million!)--MrsCommanderson 00:32, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Glitches

TBC sure fixed those glitches fast. Am I the only one who thinks they may have been watching our debugging, and fixing everything we meantioned? Dunno, could just be me, but it sure feels like we helped them out somehow. Thunderbird 23:45, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I thought that... --phlip TC 00:55, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yep, expecially the too-long name ones. - Joshua

Main Page

Since this has now been included on the Main Page, Alongside both Legal and Sketchbook, this page should probably be linked somewhere on our main page. We do have far more minor articles, such as 'Legal'. But can anybody decide exactly where? I'm thinking either after Legal or Museum in the list at the very top, or alongside 'Weeklies' and change the name to something like 'Top Button Menu' or something. Thunderbird 13:02, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I think it would work best amough the "Weeklies," but I'm not sure what that categories new name would be. - Joshua
Roll Over Buttons or Featured Buttons maybe? I dunno. Thunderbird 21:58, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

New Toons

I see that we've already noted that Commandos in the Classroom isn't listed in the XML file. Shouldn't we give them a grace period of at least a couple of hours (I'm thinking more like a few days) before we nitpick them on this? — It's dot com 19:59, 13 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I think a grace period is in order. They can't be expected to do everything right off the bat. They may be the Brothers Chaps, but they're still only human. --DorianGray
Are they gonna need to shorten it? (The title) Thunderbird 22:00, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)
My thinking when I added that fact was simply - it's not there now, which is notable now. If and when it is added later, provided it doesn't take absurdly long, it will no longer be notable and should just be removed (if it does take a rather long time then maybe have it go through STUFF with the appropriate dates). Also, as for the "couple of hours" thing, it has been a good 2 days... --phlip TC 23:47, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Wait... I just saw the date on IDC's message and checked the history... it seems you were talking about Venusy's addition here rather than the fact I just recently added to the Commandos in the Classroom page... never mind then. --phlip TC 23:50, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Decemberween In July Titles

I just noticed a toon on the list, titled That Time of Year. This is TBC's title for Decemberween Kids' Book. Which means we should probably move it. Which got me thinking, what are the titles for all the other Decemberween In July Toons they got in the XML list? Are we gonna have to move several of them? Did they even include the Decemberween in July easter egg toons (Seasonal Sweaters and Santaman ones I belive) in the Random Toons list? Some kinda meantion of this special case, (Spliting up the main Toons menu Toon into five or six sub-toons for the random toons list) should probably be made. Anyways, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thunderbird 22:10, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

After further investigation, it seems that the only anomaly is That Time of Year, with the possible exception of flipping around the titles to Decemberween Teen Girl Squad and Decemberween Sweet Cuppin' Cakes. But we should probably move Decemberween Kids' Book. Thunderbird 22:24, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Added Section / Page

Should we add a new page or section for the entire XML list, basically a cleaned up list of the following, with links, to all the toons in the random selection. Or does this violate HRWiki:Once And Only Once? Thunderbird 22:20, 15 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I thought about doing this on Secret Pages, like the weeklies XML is, but this is a lot longer than that... If we're going to do it it should be a seperate page, or a subpage or something, rather than a section of this page, but I'm not sure if it needs doing... Still, I'll pretty up this list to save you the effort if you decide to do it... --phlip TC 00:16, 16 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Virus?

Should we mention that there still is no random button with the little grey links in virus, or should we just consider that as part of the toon itself? JimmyEatPage 05:13, 17 Sep 2005 (UTC)

That is mentioned. See the section on the navigation bar. --videlectrix.pngENUSY discussionitem_icon.gif user.gifmail_icon.gif, 18:33, 18 September 2005 (BST)

Strong Bad Emails...

I was thinking: Since SBemails appear way too often on the random toon thing (this wouldn't be a problem to me but he's got his very own randomiser) maybe we should all keep mailing TBC in a wasted effort to convince them to remove the SBemails from the random toon button.

I would've thought that it were be there to give the other toons a chance to shine.

Why would we want to do that? I like it the way it is. (I just wish they'd add those new toons.) If you want to watch something that isn't an email, simply press "Again" if you get an email. You'll get something different soon enough. - Joshua 16:55, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

Has anyone else noticed that some randoms seem to be... well, more than random? I seem to get the "Band Names" sbemail once every 3 or 4 clicks on random...

It's probably a coincidence. No need to worry. — talk Bubsty edits 01:09, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Random Toon not-so-random?

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes random seems to be... well, not very random? I seem to get the "Band Names" sbemail once every 3 or 4 clicks on random...

No, it's random, that would be a coincidence. See this forum thread. --phlip TC 08:25, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I know what you mean. To me it seems that whatever I get for my first or second try, i get it again a few tried later. but i think its coincidence, like he said. --SaltyTalk! 01:30, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

I'd like to see the actionscript code... isn't it detailed here somewhere? --Stux 04:34, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that I get the older emails (numbers 1-40) much more frequently than i get any of the other emails. Maybe it's just coincidence though. --Duke33 17:49, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

This is slightly off subject, but the wiki's random page thing is definitely not random. The one right over there on the left. SaltyTalk! 18:07, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I seem to get sbemails more often than anything else. Retromaniac 22:49, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, given that there's 106 non-emails and 154 emails in rando.xml, that makes sense... --phlip TC 00:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I seem to get sbemails, answering machines, and puppet stuff all the time.
Me, those and Teen Girl Squads. But, what is there the most of? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:25, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Most computer algorithms used to generate "random" numbers are quite bad. For starters, they don't generate truly random numbers, but pseudo random numbers that only appear to be random. To make those numbers somewhat more random, programmers can for example incorporate the milliseconds part of the current time. But even then, the question remains how well distributed these numbers will be, or if there will be clusters in the sbemail range for example. As a programmer, I can tell you that it's not worth the hassle writing a good pseudo random number generator just for a random toon feature. Loafing 03:43, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

I Don't Follow?

This could just be a glitch or something, but when I press the random.bat, it doesn't follow the hilighted selection. The screen stays at the same spot, and you might see an email hilighted for a second as the selection goes by, but it doesn't follow it like it used to/shound. anybody get what I'm saying, and is the same thing happening for anybody else? Rando.xml

Has anybody noticed that the rando.xml file has vanished? It's causes the rando buttons and the E-mail page to not work. -- Super Sam 13:15, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

The Mysterious Disappearing Rando!

File not found

Firefox can't find the file at /rando.swf.

  • Check the file name for capitalization or other typing errors.
  • Check to see if the file was moved, renamed or deleted.

Right now, May 26, at 2:34 AM EST, rando.swf DOES NOT EXIST on the Homestar Runner website. They probably have it down for maintenence or something, but it might be worth noting its sudden disappearance somewhere. This means that clicking on the random toon button on any main page currently does absolutely nothing,.

It seems that the navbar has disappeared, as well. Odd. It'll probably be back soon, but why take it off to begin with? Image:SBsig.gifSBLOUNSKCHED! t/c 06:40, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

It's still there for me... Are you sure you're looking on the right site? If it really was taken down, you'd probably get 404'd rather than that generic message... --phlip TC 06:49, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
Wait, that message you got is the builtin Firefox one... it's what you'd get if you typed just /rando.swf into the Address bar instead of the full http://www.homestarrunner.com/rando.swf. --phlip TC 06:50, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

New and improved

Has anyone noticed the Random bar has been improved? See the random bar on any main page, and look at it on this page. They've added 0's at the back. My question: Should we update the image? Bluebry 21:01, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Hmm? I dun see. --DorianGray
Here's an image if you no see: Image:The Randomiser2.PNG Bluebry 21:06, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
REVIVE'd!!!: Well, this has been around for a while, but I wanted to bring it up again since it really wasn't decided how we should update the page to include this. A quick look at the Page Info show that it was last modified on Sunday, April 02, 2006. Bluebry 18:35, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Whoops!

They added the Deleted Scene toon, but they linked it to An Important Rap Song. Worth noting? Probably. --Color Printer 02:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

And how many times did you have to click to get to this? DeFender1031 02:50, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Two words: XML file. --Color Printer 02:52, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Okay, so that proves that you have even less of a life given that you routinely go through the xml files... DeFender1031 02:53, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
...Jeez...that was, like, the first time I've looked at that in, like, A YEAR. And it was just something random I decided to do. --Color Printer 02:55, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Twenty THANXty Six

Why is it called 20 THANXty 6 in the random toon pop-up? I don't think that "Twenty THANXty Six" is too long for the box. --FangoriouslyFotoshopStar.png 16:20, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Doosh vs. Dooj

In the inside references, it says "One of the 'random.bat' raps ends with Dooj. Dooj was also used in The System Is Down." in the random.bat section above, it says it ends with Doosh. which one is right? i think we should change the other one to match. The Knights Who Say Ni 16:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

It's always been "Dooj". It's even spelled out on strong bad's usb self-destruct button. — Defender1031*Talk 19:02, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

TGS 6 Missing

Teen Girl Squad #6 is missing from the xml file. I believe this should be noted under "Goofs".

"<ho n="Teen Girl Squad Dween" u="dween_tgs.html"/>" <-- That is TGS 6. --Jay (Talk) 05:55, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Aaahhh... My mistake! Sorry.

Valid

Would it be worth noting in the goofs that the XML file technically doesn't validate, since it doesn't start with the XML root element? Flytape8490 (Talk | contribs) 17:51, 27 December 2016 (UTC) (left unsigned)

It might be a remark, but I wouldn't call it a goof since it doesn't hinder the functionality of the specific feature or the overall site. — It's dot com 18:12, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
