This is a bit obscure, but at the end of this cartoon, Sickly Sam says, "I've finally found the love of a lifetime." which could be in reference to a song of the same name from the hard rock band Firehouse (since the Brothers Chaps seem very knowledgable about hard rock bands from that era). Other similar references were "Kevin Dubrow" a Quiet Riot reference from The Bet email and "Here I go again on my own" a Whitesnake reference from the Mile email. Not to mention all the old guitarist pics they have up in their audio recording room (seen in Sample of Style).

:This has been put in and taken out a few times, so I'm willing to debate this. I contend that this should be included because (a) it isn't a "common phrase" (I certainly don't go around saying it) and (b) it's an awkward thing to say at the end of a cartoon, unless the joke is that this is a reference to a semi-obscure 1990s metal song. It just doesn't have a punchline quality or any kind of comedic rhythm to it. I think if it were meant to be taken literally, Sam would have said "I've finally found the love of my life" or something that flowed a little better. Thoughts? :::You guys do also know that these are productions and the characters are actors in the Old-Timey's and not regular days in their every day-to-day life in the modern 'toons? - 11:34, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
 +
::::Now we're heading into a grey area (no pun intended). It appears that they are actors, but really the same can be said about their modern counterparts. (for example, Marzipan in Doomy Tales of the Macabre reading her lines). The question is, who is doing the direction/editing/camerawork for each series? We can assume it's The Brothers Chaps in the vanilla 'toons, but we don't really know who is supposed to be behind the Old-Timey stuff. Are the film crew fictional characters in the Homestar universe, or should we perceive them as real people like Mike and Matt... or at least fictional people from the real world we inhabit? The fake names like "Wibe Chimendez" aren't relevant here, they could just be pseudo-names<!--it's -nym! aghh!--> for folks who are supposedly real.
 +
::::In short, if Strong Bad and Wibe Chimendez could feasibly meet (er, let's say Strong Bad saw his grave, since that's more likely), then The Homestar et al are actors within the Homestar universe. If Matt filmed himself walking into a library and finding Wibe's obituary, then the Old-Timey characters would be as genuine as Homestar. And more importantly, even if they are actors, the Old-Timey characters they portray are the ones we are focusing on, since we were focusing on Homsar's supposed death even though Matt could do his voice afterwards if he chose to.
 +

 +
:::::An explanation for McArby would be that it's all 'directed' by Strong Sad in order to portray his fantasies of getting revenge on the rest of the characters. This is seen prominently in a talk with Homestar Runner in the same 'toon and Strong Bad insulting Strong Sad.
 +
:::::But, really, the best explanation for this question is, as Ted would say, 'It's just a cratoon.' - 01:56, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

:::::::I agree with Catjaz63, we hardly need to discuss the philosophy of this toon, but my original point was that before they were 2 of the 3 main heroes of the toon, but they don't appear in the climax or resolution. And about them appearing in April Fools 2014 and sbemail206, Kick the Can was made in 1933, where as this was made later, and they were animatronics in the latter toon. 17:00, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Ding! Sickly Sam's Big Outing is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

[edit] Why "Shaboigen"?

Why? I looked and I couldn't see anywhere where it was spelled as Shaboigen, and not the actual spelling of Cheboygan or Sheboygan, depending on which one you're talking about (most likely Cheboygan, because they're in the 20s and referring to bootlegging). --Tony from Cheboygan, MI

I would think that Sheboygan is by far the better known of the two cities. Mentioning both cities constantly reeks of TTATOT. If perchance TBC mention in a DVD commentary that they meant the city in Michigan, we have plenty of wiki-gnomes to make the change.--Mycroft Holmes 12:59, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
They're not referring to bootlegging, and it's not the 20's. The joke is about the multitude of cities that had early football franchises that are no longer considered major US cities, such as Akron, Providence, Frankford, Decatur, Dayton, Duluth, Evansville, Hammond, Hartford, Kenosha, Muncie, Newark, Oorang, Orange, Pottsville, Racine, Rock Island, Toledo, and Tonwanda — Flashfight 18:51, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "And the rest!"

I'm not going to add it to the page, but did anyone else think about The Robot, Mr. Bland, and Señor at "The Rest"? It's probably a reach, but the one in the middle IS robotic-looking. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 09:03, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

No i think you are right that was the first thing i thought when i saw the toon. The-homsarrunner 13:52 2008 Feb 11

The robot, I can see. The other two, not so much. One's an alien (Old Timey Nebulon?!), and the other looks like a peanut with a black eye or something. I don't see the connection. But that's just me. --Bobsmith84 14:05, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

The one on the right reminded me of Emmitt Nervend from Freakazoid. --DavidCatmull

Same thing here. DEFINATLY saw Emmitt Nervend. D: -Aranai 16:28, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I kinda do think they're supposed to be Old Timey Robot, Bland, and Señor. That was my first thought when I saw them, and them not being in the actual toon fits in context the way Mr. Bland and Señor are often mentioned in passing as if they're main characters but they're really not. On the other hand, however, you have different fingers. And since we can't be sure, and since they weren't in the toon and are not likely to ever be in an Old Timey toon, I don't think it needs to be mentioned anywhere but on a talk page.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 00:51, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Dee = Ugly One?"

Is the cow that Sickly Sam ends up with the Old-Timey The Ugly One? I mean, she has quite similar specs and hair.--User:Kerny Mantis 09:45, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

yea and with the glasses maybe... but we should wait for another opinion because so far the only old timey characters have been the characters that live in Free Country USA so... it probaly isn't The Ugly One.
Check the names of the the sender's friends in the email comics to see.--ONESTOP 21:09, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
None of them are named Dee. The Ugly One is not from Free Country USA, the glasses were just popular in that era, and SHE'S A COW! So, no. No Ugly One.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 00:01, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Birds?

The Sneak being attacked by the seagulls reminded me of the Alfred Hitchcock movie The Birds. Does anyone else think this is a reference? --Bobsmith84 13:34, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

It's similar, but I think a reference would be a stretch. -Opus the Penguin

[edit] Firehouse reference?

This is a bit obscure, but at the end of this cartoon, Sickly Sam says, "I've finally found the love of a lifetime." which could be in reference to a song of the same name from the hard rock band Firehouse (since the Brothers Chaps seem very knowledgable about hard rock bands from that era). Other similar references were "Kevin Dubrow" a Quiet Riot reference from The Bet email and "Here I go again on my own" a Whitesnake reference from the Mile email. Not to mention all the old guitarist pics they have up in their audio recording room (seen in Sample of Style).

This has been put in and taken out a few times, so I'm willing to debate this. Thoughts? Welp, there's obviously a consensus against it, so I'm not going to belabor it. I would like to point out, however, in a Google search of the phrase , about 90% of the links on the first few pages are references to the song. Wear a Bikini 18:50, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
It is SO a reference to the Firehouse song. You kids don't know about your pop-culture references at all.

[edit] Horse or Cow?

I'm pretty sure Dee is a horse, not a cow. For one thing, she has no utter. Plus, a horse would make more sense at a glue factory. Exhibit A (talk · edits) 20:09, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

You're right. Fixed. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 20:27, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

It's definitely a cow, udders or no udders. It's got the spots, the cow-ish face and the cow-ish tail. Besides, cows are used at a glue factory as well, not just horses. ({User:Kerny Mantis)} 21.02 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I think the tail is one of the best bits of evidence for her being a horse. It's basically just a mass of hair, like a horse's tail. Heimstern Läufer 21:03, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

In the "Places" section on the wiki, why aren't there any listed? Also I would wonder if I could make the page called the Saw Mill where The Homestar Runner and Old-Timey Marzipan were being sawed by Old-Timey Strong Bad after Sickly Sam burned the film.--ONESTOP 21:13, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Goofs? Really?

There are currently two goofs listed:
 • When Old Timey Strong Bad jumps in on the boardwalk, Sickly Sam's hat disappears.
 • The color of the end stripe on The Sneak's tail changes periodically throughout the toon.
Given the nature of this toon, I'm not sure we can count these as goofs. There are many purposefully introduced "goofs" in this toon. We should simply ignore it as we do with Powered by The Cheat "goofs". Loafing 23:32, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
I agree. Especially about the hat. Lelila 07:11, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... that's true, TBC might have done that just because in those older films sometimes they would forget to keep prop continuity. Not sure though. --Abelhawk 20:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
I think it's possible that the color change on The Sneak's tail is quite likely intentional, but not Sickly Sam's hat disappearing. That seems like a definite goof to me. ~That Guy Over There (User talk:That Guy Over There) 01:44, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Foiled?

Are we sure that "Foiled again!" is from the Dudley Do-right segment? I mean, Dick Dastardly from the old CN cartoon Wacky Racers also uses that. And that's just one example...

[edit] Dressed to the 5 3/4s?

Is this a play on the phrase "Dressed to the nines?" implying that Sickly Sam will only be dressed moderately better? If so, does this warrant an explanation?

It sounds like a good idea. I'd never heard that expression before, and that phrase slightly confused me.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 02:33, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Live Action?

Should it be mentioned under Remarks that unlike previous Old-Timey cartoons, this one seems to be styled after live action TV shows, with props on strings and poorly edited outakes?--Tenka Muteki 01:47, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

The poor editing in Old-Timey cartoons has been seen before, but I do agree that it's unusual for there to be obvious sticks and props in what should be an ANIMATED show. Remark-worthy? Dunno. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:50, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
I think it's remark-worthy. Previous old-timey toons looked like they showed what actually happened back then, while this one clearly shows that it's all staged with scripts, acting, bad special effects and editing. Loafing 01:54, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fort Wayne Locomotive

Anyone else think his voice might be based on Art Carney (TV's Ed Norton, and the inspiration for Yogi Bear and Barney Rubble)?

Someone apparently thought exactly that, as Ed Norton and Art Carney were previously mentioned before someone else removed it as "Dubious". --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 03:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
I see it got re-added... maybe it's true, but wouldn't it be better to mention this on his character page instead? It's not like we put "Bubs' voice sounds like Redd Foxx" in the RWRs of every toon *he* appears in... -YKHi. I'm Ayjo! 20:43, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't think so. I think it was parodying the phrase "dressed to the nines." Lelila

[edit] Ribcage Stomach

It seems to be a reference to cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, as they would often use the ribcage as a stomach. Perhaps another 80s reference?

Tom and Jerry predate the '80s by about 40 years.— Bassbone (TALK Strong Mad Has a Posse CONT) 02:16, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
I didn't say Tom and Jerry were '80s, but that was more of a 'cartoons such as.' I'm not sure entirely on dates, but cheap '80s cartoons probably had their share of ribcagey stomachs. Anyway. NOT THE POINT. xD

[edit] Give Him the Business

When Strong Bad says that step one of the plan is to "give him the business", it reminded me of a couple of referree's description of personal foul penalties. Video clips of them can be found on YouTube, along with a reference from the new American Gladiators. Not sure if someone wants to include that in the Fun Facts, but I'd thought I'd mention it. — 148.129.71.52 (Talk | contribs) 15:59, 12 February 2008 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Giving the business is an oooooold expression. Watch just about any Leave It To Beaver episode to see that it was commonly used back in the late-50's. Here's an example:
Wally: Boy, Beaver, wait'll the guys find out you were hanging around with a girl. They'll really give you the business.
Beaver: But gee, Wally, you hang around with girls and the guys don't give you the business.
Wally: Well, that's because I'm in high school. You can do a lot of stuff in high school without getting the business.
Whether or not it was in use much before then, I have no idea. But I do know that this is more likely to be a reference to something old than to something from this year, given that this is an old-timey cartoon. (BTW, I'm not claiming this is a reference to Leave It To Beaver, I'm just making the point that it's an old expression.) OptimisticFool 16:19, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Doorbell?

Do you think we should add something like this to the Trivia section? Like, that says:

The cut during the telegram scene may be because doorbells haven't been invented yet.

Or, more likely, The Homestar Runner messed up his lines and the editor was incompetent. (Plus doorbells were invented way before the 1930s.) – The Chort 19:29, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] So... What happened to them?

What do you think happened to Old-Timey Homestar and Old-Timey Marzipan at the Saw Mill? I guess that Fat Dudley came to the rescue just in time, but that wasn't shown. I figured that would be possible for two reasons.

 • 1: Fat Dudley was mysteriously absent, and should have appeared at some point. This is less likely.
 • 2:The "Saw Mill" scene is an retro cartoon cliche, and a hero (in this case, Fat Dudley) would have most definetly come to the rescue just in time, as the cliche goes. This is very likely.

So, what do you think happened to them?

I'm thing of a word. It begins with an "s". What is it? Oh yeah, it's speculation! No offense, but this is complete speculation. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 20:36, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fact Consolidation?

This one is listed under "Explanations":

 • Early 20th century films would be partially colorized in some parts of certain scenes for emphasis. This colorization would have to be done after the film was already made.

And this one is listed under "Remarks":

 • The first color films appeared in the late 1920s, but experimental color films (which this resembles) with only part of the scene colorized or tinted, were done as early as first decade of the 20th century.

Shouldn't these two be connected together into a single fact?

So will some body add it to real world referances? Its too similer to be a cowinseedance(sound it out and if you get it to sound like a word that makes sense change it)

Yes, it can still be a coincidence. In fact, I'm more than convinced it is, considering the speech patterns of Old-Timey characters often mimic old-timey slang, and this falls into that category. I think it's not worth noting. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 15:09, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Okay, that 8-bit style music that plays when TFWL runs away sounds like it could very well be from some NES game or something, especially since you can hear some beeps and stuff. Anyone more familiar with the NES era want to confirm or deny this? Because it wouldn't surprise me a bit. [edit] Gilligan's Island

 • "And The Rest" at the end of the introduction of characters is a reference to the theme of the first season of Gilligan's Island.

Unlike another debate over the usage of "...and the rest" in virus, this case seems pretty much identical to Gilligan's Island in context: introduce a few members of the cast, and shove everyone else aside as "the rest". [edit] Missing Boardwalk

If you'll notice when Sickly Sam is on the boardwalk in the far distance you can see a fair and ferris wheel, and a boardwalk and land going off to the left. Yet Strong Bad and company are on the left of him (notice Strong Man goes at Sickly Sam from the left) and there's no evidence of anything in the background. In one scene, we see The Homestar and Marzipan about to die in the factory, and after that, we never see them again. Does this deserve a mention?

A mention of what exactly? Anything beyond "there's this weird, misplaced scene and we don't know what happened afterward" would be speculation. — Defender1031*Talk 21:31, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Ah... but we do see The Homestar again in April Fool 2014. He's doing as well as he was previously. So we can say based on that logic that Marzipan is also likely okay.
Unless of course you believe that he's really an animatronic that whole time, as he is in sbemail206. -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 10:50, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
You guys do also know that these are productions and the characters are actors in the Old-Timey's and not regular days in their every day-to-day life in the modern 'toons? - Catjaz63 11:34, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
Now we're heading into a grey area (no pun intended). The fake names like "Wibe Chimendez" aren't relevant here, they could just be pseudo-names for folks who are supposedly real.
In short, if Strong Bad and Wibe Chimendez could feasibly meet (er, let's say Strong Bad saw his grave, since that's more likely), then The Homestar et al are actors within the Homestar universe. If Matt filmed himself walking into a library and finding Wibe's obituary, then the Old-Timey characters would be as genuine as Homestar. And more importantly, even if they are actors, the Old-Timey characters they portray are the ones we are focusing on, since we were focusing on Homsar's supposed death even though Matt could do his voice afterwards if he chose to.
...and what if Wibe Chimendez was a Teen Girl Squad character? What then? I totally always look awesome hypothesizing backwards meta -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 01:08, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
An explanation for McArby would be that it's all 'directed' by Strong Sad in order to portray his fantasies of getting revenge on the rest of the characters. This is seen prominently in a talk with Homestar Runner in the same 'toon and Strong Bad insulting Strong Sad.
But, really, the best explanation for this question is, as Ted would say, 'It's just a cratoon.' - Catjaz63 01:56, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Agreed. But what a cratoon. Everybody loves the it. It is a terrific body of work. Peoples all the time debate about their flavorite dumb animal characters dying. IT HAS ITS OWN WIKI EVEN -- ■■   PURPLE  WRENCH   ■■ 02:12, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I agree with Catjaz63, we hardly need to discuss the philosophy of this toon, but my original point was that before they were 2 of the 3 main heroes of the toon, but they don't appear in the climax or resolution. And about them appearing in April Fools 2014 and sbemail206, Kick the Can was made in 1933, where as this was made later, and they were animatronics in the latter toon.
