:I dunno... I think its just a parody of just about every other cheesy teen movie where the main character finally realizes that the other person was "always there for them" but they just never saw it cause they were too busy with becoming popular, or whatever the main premise of the movie was. And, considering the whole ending (with the garbage dumping and walking away into a parking lot) is a parody of teen movies, this makes much more sense.
