Ding! The Geddup Noise is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Origin

We need to put the first SBemail that the geddup noise appeared in on the page. It's not the bet...--Nathand42 21:23, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yup! I'm trying to track that down... this is the earliest instance I know of. And the first instance that I know it's being named. --Stux 21:30, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
That's true. I'ma go work on that too.--Nathand42 21:47, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I found it. - Joshua

Nice job. --Nathand42 23:26, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Hey, I added the geddup noise into the fun facts in Studying.--Nathand42 23:29, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Descriptions

Hey guys, I think more descriptive appearances would be more helpful!

For example: LEMKE lists specifically where we find its appearances. I may be alone on this but it may lead to a more rich article! It is a very easy thing to miss if you're not paying attention, so some guide that points where to listen to would be quite informative.

I know other entries such as Clapperboard, Strong Badia, and Homestar's Slippers merely list their appearances. However, these are either few, or really easy to pick up on. The entry Leomard_Sportsinterviews also lists specific entries since it's usually something hard to find too.

Let me know what you guys think.

--Stux 22:38, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)

I agree with Stux. — It's dot com 23:34, 26 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I disagree. It is very easy to find out where it appears by merely reading the transcript or using common sense: just look around for the times where Strong Bad stands up/sits down. - Joshua 02:32, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)
I'm not so sure it's that straight forward. For the first emails that works great, but for the later emails, which are longer and more complex, it becomes more of an easter egg hunt. This is especially true since not all the times strong bad gets up or sits in the chair he gets a geddup noise. The duration of the noise isn't consistent either. I have noticed some points where it's a bit shorter than usual, almost easily missed. Having the information available helps the reader a lot in knowing where to find, or even count, the geddups! --Stux 03:32, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)
But there's so many sightings, making descriptions for them all would be very space consuming and could deter the average browser. - Joshua
To minimize clutter, just make a table and keep the descriptions as short as possible. Put the table at the bottom where the casual user can skip it but the advanced user can read it should he or she desire. — It's dot com 16:21, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Still Pending & Suggestions

Hi guys, I'm calling it the day but I wanted to leave these couple of notes:

  • I suggest that the "almost Geddups" (i.e. vacation and depressio) be listed separately, in their own category. There are other "almost Geddups" that can fit in that category if others feel up to the challenge of adding them (if it's appropriate at all to do so).
  • The list is not exhaustive. I have only managed to listen to a portion of the emails and skipped around a bit. My apologies for not mentioning that explicitly before. I am guessing that Joshua has done a systematic check on a lot of the emails. However, a "certificate" of sorts would be nice :).

I have checked the range 70-95 for certain. Though I would like to make a double check. Hopefully, if I have time, I will go through them all soon. Good night guys and good luck! --Stux 04:06, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)

  • A certificate? Like, "Geddup noise approved?" We should get that and put it on any e-mails that have the Geddup Noise in them.
I like the idea of the above annony. We could put it at the top of the talk page. - KookykmanImage:kookysig.gif(t)(c)(r)

Category

I have created a category named Category withing this discussion in order to discuss the possible category or categories this article should be in. Discuss.

  • To begin, I have really no idea what category this should be under. I looked at the list and all I could come up with was Items, and Running Gags. The only other alternative would be to create one called Sounds? or even the more abstract, "Personifications"? I added Running Gags cuz that's the most reasonable, and likely one. --Stux 22:53, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)
That is an interesting point. The Gettup Noise is unclassifiable. At least by our current standards, and there's nothing else to go into a new category with it should we create a new one. At least, not that I can think of now. Hmmmmm.... small_logo.pngUsername-talk 22:58, 27 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Umm...what about pseudocharacters? Doesn't it say that on the page right now? Has Matt?

New Image

The new quote of the week has an image of the Geddup Noise speaking, sort of. Should we use it instead? - Joshua 03:05, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I like that one. Catch it before it gets away! I almost saved it for no reason at all, myself... --DorianGray

eh, i think we should leave it as it is... but it could be useful later on... ah what the heck. go for it. posted by DDRfreak1 03:09, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Is there any way we can move/size the image so that "the bet" doesn't end up being "the ... <newline> <flush waaay left> ... bet."! It just looks funny. I tried different combinations using the preview and the only decent one I found was making the thumb be 100px but the picture then looks a little distorted. Sigh. --Stux 14:12, 30 Sep 2005 (UTC)

Gettup Noise Approved

Discussion

I am including this template to keep track of what emails have the geddup noise for sure, which one's don't, and which ones have not been verified. The source for the table can be found here. Feel free to use it for your own talk pages!

--Stux 04:41, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure how you intended this table to be used, but I'll give it a shot. — It's dot com 04:49, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Hey that's what experimentation's all about no? :) I broke this up to make it more manageable. Thank you for all of your help and support! --Stux 05:05, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)
This should give you a good idea of what it's intended for and how it's meant to be used. Notice that the "Found by" isn't just for one person to fill, necessarily! Anyone can put their "singature" on the entry to confirm it (I should've called it "Signed By" -- done!). Anyway I just put in the ones I have notes for. I know I went through others but not all. Anyone can add to this list! So with this I can get to doing them all. Hopefully this is "Have a good night!" for real! --Stux 05:16, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Yeah. I'm still intending to finish this. I've just had to put this, like many other things in the backburner for IRL stuff. But any help will be much appreciated. At least I should add the most recent emails. --Stux 03:56, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Variations

I don't see anything wrong with having those two items in their own category (even if it's two for now). These instances are different enough that they merit them being placed aside from the main list. Personally, I do not beleive they belong at all in the main list. They are not "The Geddup Noise" per se, nor do they embody the personification of The Geddup Noise. --Stux 04:55, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)

See my comments on my talk page for another arguement. I do not hear Geddy in vacation, so that brings the total to one. And having a seperate category for one is rediculous. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 04:58, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, That's why I didn't think they belonged there. They're not really the geddup noise sound effects, but they are "getting up" sound effects nonetheless. In vacation, there is a weird noise made when he gets up. If you hear depressio, there is another sound effect that really doesn't sound like geddy at all. I don't mind if they are mentioned elsewhere as getting up noises, but not as the "geddup noise" (eh, now that I think about it, they're not really even "variations"). If you want, that last one could be removed also. --Stux 05:15, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
I do not hear vacation. I just hear Strong Bad say something when he gets up. your right about depressio, it is not the geddup noise, but know the geddup noise is set in stone. I really think it is over kill to put in a category for one or two exceptions. Rogue Leader / (my talk) 05:23, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree, it's not worth for one or two exceptions. I'd rather have it mentioned in the introduction. But i don't think it merits a listing in the appearance section. --Stux 05:43, 4 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Like RL, I only hear SB humming or something when he Gets Outcha Seat in vacation, not the Geddup Noise or any of its squeaky brethren. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 17:18, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

Chairscoot's own page?

I was just wondering if Chairscoot was going to be given it's own page, or if it will reamin a redirect in the Geddup Noise page. I know they are really similar and Strong Bad isn't real clear on exactly when the two are switched, but shouldn't the casual reader be informed of which noise they are hearing? Just a thought. Discuss.

---Jeff J. W.(Talk·Contribs)hr.png

We say here that Chairscoot replaced the Geddup Noise in Kids' Book. All someone has to do is fine kids' book in the "Appearances" section, and all the sightigns after it are chairscoot. - Joshua 17:51, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
But in geddup noise it says that the phone calls came in during kids book, not that chairscoot came in. So the only thing we really know is that in geddup noise thats chairscoot, and all the emails after that. DBK! 16:39, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, if no one minds, I'm gonna make a Chairscoot page. If anyone else wants to, I won't start until after a week. Bluebry muffin 16:56, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Merge Chairscoot into The Geddup Noise. Rearrange Appearances if you'd like to. We don't need a Chairscoot page right now. —BazookaJoe 17:07, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Merg'd! DBK! 18:18, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Chairscoot?

Is there really a difference between Chairscoot and TGN? Or is it the same sound with two different names?

You know, I was reading another page, and I noticed a comment that struck true with me. What, if anything, would be wrong with including an .ogg of The Geddup Noise on this article, seeing it is about the noise? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah actually, the bottom of the page links to Sound Effects which itself is chock full of .OGG files, but not one of them is The Geddup Noise. The paper's Preeeeow noise is there (but not on its main article) but not Geddy. I think both sound effects, and this page should have em and The Paper should link to it too. The other option is keeping them all in sound effects, add anchors to the tables (à la Floppy Disk) and link them here and at The Paper (and maybe other places too). --Stux 21:39, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
I have added an anchor and link to The Paper, but I could use someone's magic to upload an .ogg sample of The Geddup Noise/Chairscoot. Other sound effects could be tagged and linked to as well. --Stux 04:38, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Later eMails

Do the later emails have any noise? The list just kind of ends at one point.

Doesn't what I want count as a later email? It only came out last December. Shwoo 12:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I haven't updated the list above, which is intended to keep track of which emails do and don't have the noise. I will do that soon and make an easy way of subst:-ing new portions of the table in. (And to answer your question, yes, we've been keeping track of which later emails have the noise.) --Stux 15:21, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

When was ol' geddy mentioned?

Was there any mentioning of the Geddup noise prior to the email "geddup noise"? 192.139.27.18 21:01, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
