I just wanted to point out that using the "pause" on the greasemonkey causes the song to continue, even though it shouldn't. Is this due to the aforementioned (on this talk page) early flash skills? And, is this why it isn't subtitled? {{User:ColdReactive/sig}} 12:19, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Ding! Theme Song Video is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

[edit] Homsar

Is it really worth mentioning that Homsar is not in it, as he was not a character yet. He wasnt even created until a year later. - Lord-Z.

Actually, he is in it, see the DVD version on Everything Else. Homfrog 12:39, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

So, from the DVD version, he appears to be in design one of his evolution. And the lyrics, "Homestar Runner, mom and dad!" are sung at his time. Does that mean Homsar is Homestar's Poopaw? Homfrog 12:42, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

And Marzipan is his mother, and he's Oedipal! Wait 'til the Shakespeare scholars get hold of this one! —AbdiViklas 14:21, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
I think the new visuals were added later, intentionally in the older style. And no, I don't think that Homsar is Homestar's father. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 12:46, 17 November 2005 (UTC)
I do not understand that, AbdiViklas. Homfrog 20:16, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Skatetown, USA

Anyone have any idea what "skatetown, usa" is? It's on the back wall in the Bubs dance scene. ~Hobo

I'm assuming that it's the name of a fictional rollerskating rink. — InterruptorJones[[]]

Actually, Skatetown USA was a Movie released in 1979 - there are many real Skatetown USA roller rinks in the United States.

[edit] Veracity of newly-added fun fact?

Can someone (besides the submitter of the above fun fact) back up that the following fun fact is, indeed, true? If it can be confirmed it should be returned the article.

*this song is almost the same as the NES Super Homestario Bros. song. The only difference is that this song is longer.

--Teh P. 19:01, 28 Oct 2004 (MST)

The poster is correct, it's the same song as in Super NES. It should be linked, and worded better. — InterruptorJones[[]]

[edit] Video Description?

I really think there should be some kind of transcript of the video itself. The page seems a bit empty when there's just the lyrics. --Upsilon

  • You are SO right. According to this page there's no way to tell what the video was like.

[edit] Mom and Dad

Which came out first? This or Homestarloween Party? If this came first, the fun fact on the Homestarloween Party page stating it's the first mention of a mom of any character is wrong.Just saying...— Ookelaylay

Actually, Super NES came out first.--Jnelson09 20:53, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Brother Chaps

I slowed down the song and I still can't make out the Brother Chaps...--Martin925 03:54, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

I can kinda hear them... but not really. — talk Bubsty edits 04:14, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The distributive whaddawahuh?

Can someone refresh my mind (and maybe a fun fact) as to what this is?--Robert Benedicio 05:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Knife hits Strong Sad?

Note: This discussion originated from an uploaded image titled Strong Bad edited.jpg showing the last frame of the scene when Strong Bad throws a knife at Strong Sad. The uploader posted a fun fact claiming that the knife did in fact hit Strong Sad. Below is the resulting discussion arguing the validity of this statement.

Ummm... That's kinda disturbing... Thunderbird 00:04, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Does it really hit him, or did Mario-whatever just make that? I don't think TBC would do that on a website that can be for kids... — talk Bubsty edits 00:08, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
It's Strong Bad edited.jpg. And I don't recall it actually showing the result. Thunderbird 00:09, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Actully, after watching it, the knife does hit Strong Sad. Creepy. — talk Bubsty edits 00:11, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
After watching it myself, and pausing on the flash file, it actually cuts to a different scene before it hits him. That picture is the last frame we can see before it cuts, and the knife is clearly still in front of him, on an unknown vector, most likely to the upper right of the board, just missing him. Thunderbird 01:01, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Not the paused version I saw. I rewound back a few frames, and it was stuck right in him. --DorianGray
Mm, no. It's not stuck in him. That's just the way the in-flight knife is drawn. There are only two frames of the knife in-flight. Compare them. It looks blunted, but the tip of the knife is actually that uppermost point. The knife can't be sticking into Strong Sad when the entire tip is still visible. In fact, I don't think this image is even edited. —BazookaJoe 01:39, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

My own little reference-library. I searched it for longer pages for you. Of course, we keep this up and I'll have to baleet it. :) —BazookaJoe 01:54, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't think it's actully hitting him. — talk Bubsty edits 01:50, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
I balleeted the fun fact, because:
1. It's not a goof, it's a remark.
2. (More important), we don't know if it's true or not.
3. Er... there isn't 3. But a two number list seems kinda odd.
If anyone disagrees with me, put it back, by all means! Although, at the stage it is now, I think this picture is useless. — talk Bubsty edits 02:21, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
skew'd!

After closer inspection, Pom Pom and I agree that the knife does not hit Strong Sad, and it isn't blunt when it's in flight, just skewed to give the impression of dimension. — It's dot com 02:52, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Before (if) this image (Strong Bad edited.jpg) and gets deleted in the near future along with this Image talk: page, I would like this discussion copied to Talk:Theme Song Video. —BazookaJoe 03:13, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm surprised anybody responded at all to an image talk page, let alone several having a full blown discussion (that I was on the winning side of =P) Thunderbird 03:23, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I hear "ath-a-late" as well, and per the fourth point on HRWiki:Manual of Style#Spelling, we should change it in the transcript. Go ahead and make the change, if you like. Trey56 03:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DVD Version

Are the new scenes in the old style or the current style? Do they try to animate Homsar in the old style? Bad Bad Guy 18:15, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, he has his overly-large hat from homsar in it. --DorianGray 18:19, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
So it's the old style? Bad Bad Guy 17:16, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Yes. --DorianGray 17:28, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
His feet look different too, more like Homestar's. -ComputerBox 13:15, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 说明文件

Due to the circumstances, I find it hard to believe that this is Chinese. It is most likely Japanese. I would appreciate it if someone could find out what it may mean in Japanese to clearify/prove this. I can't accurately translate any languages, it always mixes up the meanings of words. — 68.38.50.213 (Talk | contribs) 28 August 2008 (left unsigned)

I don't know anything about Chinese, but pasting this straight into a computer translating program gives "Documentation" when translated as Chinese. I do know some Japanese, but nowhere near enough to offer any genuine insight here... but for what it's worth, pasting this into a translation program as Japanese comes back as gibberish.
Also, interpreting it as Japanese, looking up the 4 kanji independently, I can't find anything about the first 2 at all. (The last two I can find in my dictionary, but I don't understand what they would mean together -- could be something like "sentence matter", or "the aforementioned language").  Green Helmet 18:34, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
The first character is a guy holding a magic wand, the second is a shopping cart, the third is a guy with a very small head, and the fourth is a very thin person reaching to put a star on top of a Christmas tree. This clearly matches the ancient Chinese expression "There's magic at the store, and small-headed people marry thin Christians". Those crazy Chinese. =] And so you see, it is most likely Chinese, not Japanese. ;) OptimisticFool 18:44, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
The second Kanji is, in Japanese, the symbol for moon. The third one is used in newspaper and magazine and usually translated sentence when on its own. This is likely not a real word or phrase at all, but when I get home I can look it up in my massive Japanese dictionary. :) —NFITC1talk 20:01, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, moon is 月 (pronounced がつ, i.e. ga-tsu), which is the same as month (月 pronounced つき, i.e. tsu-ki), and also happens to be one of the very few kanji I'm actually familiar with. The second one used in the toon has extra stuff in it, so it's different...  Green Helmet 22:36, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
As NFITC1 stated, it probably isn't a real phrase. Most likely something they saw as part of a much longer phrase, decided they liked it, and put it in. The phrase in Japanese seems to be just as meaningless as it would be in Chinese. I seriously doubt the planned to have it mean "Help files". I think that the mention of "说明文件" should just be deleted in its entirety, rather than how I planned of finding what it is in Japanese to give it its true meaning. I doubt it has one, in either Japanese or Chinese. — 68.38.50.213 (Talk | contribs) 28 August 2008 (left unsigned)
But, it's not just as meaningless in Chinese. It's an actual meaningful phrase in Chinese.  Green Helmet 23:42, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, okay, it makes a sentance. Homsar makes sentances but that doesn't mean it makes sense. Seriously, why would they want it to say "Help files"? I'm pretty sure its just something they thought would look nice for it. Doubt they planned it. — 68.38.50.213 (Talk | contribs) 28 August 2008 (left unsigned)
  1. I agree that Japanese would make more sense in the context of the toon.
  2. I agree that they probably didn't plan it. They probably did not know what the symbols meant. My speculation is that they copied it out of some product manual, or game manual they had around. (which would almost certainly be in Chinese rather than Japanese, and which would be very likely to contain the phrase "Documentation", or "Help files").
  3. I agree that it doesn't make sense for that phrase to be hanging on Pom Pom's wall.
  4. I still don't see any reason to remove the translation from the article. It's a relevant and interesting fact.
And hey, we do transcribe Homsar... ;-)  Green Helmet 23:58, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
I rest, my case. Rest nothing. My case is in a coma! (Yet I'm not sure why a video game manual would be in Chinese. How many Chinese video games are there?) — 68.38.50.213 (Talk | contribs) 28 August 2008 (left unsigned)
GreenHelmet, you are correct. I hastily wrote that typed that last comment and didn't realize my error until later. The kanji 明 actually means bright on its own (I know a good amount of Japanese too, but I still get the kanji confused sometimes) and when paired with 日 means tomorrow. After putting this whole thing in Google, it leads to several Chinese pages (which explains why I can't find it in my Japanese dictionary) and translates the entire word as "Document of Explanation" or just "Documentation", but could be "Document of Resource" or "Help File" depending on context. Also interesting, is 說明文件 seems to mean the same thing since these came up as results too. Oddly, searching for that combination shows "History of 7-Zip" as the first result. Weird. I have no idea how to pronounce it in Chinese, but in Japanese, this phrase may read something close to "se-tsu-may-BOON-ken".
EDIT: I did find 說明文 in my Japanese dictionary as Setsumeibun which is translated as "Written Explanation." 件 translates as item. —NFITC1talk 19:13, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The front of Homestar's Face

I removed the following from the front page because, after going through the flash file frame by frame, Homestar's face is not shown (Also, it is in second person.):

trlkly 06:19, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, his face is somewhat covered by his driving goggles, but the key point was the direct front view, which is very rarely seen. I added it back (without the second person) and a picture of the view that the fact is supposed to be referring to. If it still doesn't make sense the way it's written, maybe it can be reworded, but I think it's notable.  Green Helmet 06:37, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Adding a picture helped. I was looking at the wrong car! Still, it's not really his face, as far as I can tell, He has on goggles, and some sort of smock. I guess that could be his mouth, but that isn't consistent with how he is drawn face forward at other times. (The)trlkly 06:04, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The song is way off in Firefox

OK, for some reason, the music is way off. The ending of the video occurs when they sing "Look out Homestar, is Strong Bad!". Ugozima Talk to me 05:39, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

This is not unique to Firefox, and if it's not already on the page, I will be SHOCKED. This is especially true given that the DVD version added extra scenes in order to make the end of the video and the end of the song match, complete with DVD commentary pointing out the same. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Seems like Ugozima's is a little more behind than most, though, judging from the visuals page. --DorianGray 06:37, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Hm. Okay, point. Actually, now that you mention it, I'm seeing the same phenomenon: the video runs a little quicker on Firefox than Internet Explorer. It's out of sync on both, though. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:42, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I use firefox, and it's not that bad at all for me. But yes, this video was made before TBC perfected their flash skills and is horribly messy and glitchy. — Defender1031*Talk 12:21, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
But on the bright side. This toon loads faster than anything else. Ugozima Talk to me 21:42, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't use fire fox and the same thing is happening to me. The music stars where it should but doesn't end where it should. I think the video is a bit sped up.

[edit] Flash artifacts

So there have been many times in the past where a fact will be added about something that continues moving if paused, and removed as a "Flash artifact". I disagree with this. First of all, i don't understand why "If you right-click and hit 'Pause', the song will keep playing" is any less of a flash artifact or any more notable than "if you right-click and hit 'Pause' on the scene with Homestar running around planet, he will keep running". Secondly, it seems to me that TBC have since refined their animation style, such that all movements (with the exception of Homestar's default blink) are synched to the Flash frames, as opposed to being animated objects. I think that it's very notable to list animated objects of the sort TBC no longer use in their animations anymore. Thoughts? — Defender1031*Talk 22:47, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

You're right... the music continuing paused is a Flash artifact. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:33, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, okay, I'll go into more detail. We have long had a tradition of deleting Flash artifacts. We define Flash artifacts as "anything that happens when you manipulate the Flash file in ways you're not supposed to and wasn't clearly intentional on the part of the Chaps". (That last one matters in cases like garage sale, Senorial Day, and the chair, where there are elements you can only see by manipulating the Flash file, but TBC clearly meant for them to be found.) That includes missing limbs "behind the black", oddities when you click on something, pull away, and let go (except a special case for main pages, but mainly as a compromise with many editors adding them over and over again), and anything unusual that happens when you pause, rewind, play, or whatever from the right click menu. TBC take shortcuts from time to time—shortcuts that won't even affect the vast majority of viewers, so why bother noting them? It was correct to remove the mention of Homestar continuing to run while the Flash is paused, and also to remove the continuing music. Sorry you disagree, but that's the tradition. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 01:54, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm fully aware of this. I'm proposing that perhaps we should make an exception in this case. — Defender1031*Talk 02:03, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
I guess it's just not clear why exactly you want an exception to be made in this particular case. -132.183.151.150 02:18, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Because TBC don't use these animation shortcuts anymore. Perhaps we shouldn't note them here, but have some sort of article about how their animation technique evolved as they went on... i think that would be very interesting to read. — Defender1031*Talk 02:43, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
I think it's interesting to note as well. There should be some way to document TBC's evolution as time has marched on.. OptimisticFool 05:52, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Pistols for Pandas. Media center lady scene. Evolution schmevolution; they still do it. I'd still be against it even if they didn't, though. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 09:40, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Subtitles: Why They Aren't?

I just wanted to point out that using the "pause" on the greasemonkey causes the song to continue, even though it shouldn't. Is this due to the aforementioned (on this talk page) early flash skills? And, is this why it isn't subtitled? ColdReactive 12:19, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
