Homestar's pants/leg

When I first watched this, I'm certain I heard "Hitchin' a ride on Homestar's pants". When I listen now, it's obviously "leg". Did anyone else have the same experience? Did they pull a fast one? Are there two versions? Am I just crazy? — It's dot com 03:24, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

It would "bust" the proverbial "rhyme" if it were true. Bombcar 04:09, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Neither one is a good rhyme. The song is inconsistent. "Fire" and "choir" rhyme, but other similar instances don't ("leg"/"pants" and "job"; "gymnasium" and "do"). — It's dot com 04:50, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, I just don't think that it's a rhyming song. I sounds better without the rhymes in my opinion. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 15:19, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
It's definitely a rhyming song, it just doesn't consistently rhyme on the off lines. I never heard any version with "pants", but it was pretty clear after coming here that I'd missed the 'toon's release by several hours. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, according to the Last-Modified dates, the SWF was updated about 50 minutes after the toon's release – the HTML page was last modified 1:55:34 UTC, the wiki article was created 2:18 UTC (so the toon was definitely released already), then the SWF was updated at 2:45:42 UTC. Whether it really said "pants" in those first 50 minutes isn't something we can confirm unless someone happened to save a copy of that first version. But if anyone else can confirm they heard "pants" first time around, I'm comfortable with adding it to Trivia. --phlip TC 21:40, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I dunno, I watched it almost immediately after the page was created (how "almost" I unfortunately can't confirm, although I'm pretty sure it was less than 27 minutes..) and I definitely heard leg. -128.103.10.135 22:00, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I made the forum article before the wiki article was even created and have the "leg" line as one of the options. So either the wiki article was created after the update, or it wasn't changed. Monkeytender 23:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Strong Sad

The page shows Strong Sad as one of the characters, but I didn't see him and he's not referenced. Am I missing something? Bombcar 03:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

You can see his foot sticking out from under the pile of burning mattresses. --DorianGray 03:56, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see it. Perhaps a description of the mattress fire could be added. Bombcar 03:57, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Does anyone else think its a good idea to make this another case of Strong Sad's Death? His corpse is popping up everywhere! --lustmyeyes <3 07:22, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
His leg is still twitching, so it's not quite death. --DorianGray 09:45, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Isn't that just... well, semantics? It's still a pretty clear death reference, even if he's still technically barely alive. Besides, a body can twitch after it's dead if the nerves are activated. --141.224.237.41 13:37, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Agreed with the above; even though he's (probably) not quite dead, being stuck under a pile of flaming mattresses for a couple days would have to be considered an attempt to kill him. And a quick description of the fire should be added to the transcript.71.254.118.93 03:49, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
The description of the fire is on the visuals page where it belongs, and again, his soolnd is clearly moving. The Strong Sad's Death page clearly says that its scope is only cases where it's as if strong sad is already dead. — Defender1031*Talk 03:52, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Strong Mad Uses Good Grammar?

Looks like ol' Graw Mad is using complete sentences now. If my math is right, he did it twice in this toon. That's probably a new record! :68.32.116.46 04:07, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Possibly, but this is hardly the first time he's used a complete sentence, and hardly the place for discussing this either. --DorianGray 04:10, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
He's actually used a complete sentence before, as in Ever and More! - I CAN LET OUT THE WAIST A LITTLE BIT FOR YOU! (11 words, 12 syllables). And yes, this discussion should go to the forum.--Charlie Jr. 17:00, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't know, I was struck by that in this toon also, and thought maybe it deserved its own page if it doesn't have one already. He's come a long way from not being able to say "Dennis" to using complete sentences with 4-syllable words ("motorcycles").71.254.118.93 21:15, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Apparently you can't say "douglas" either. — Defender1031*Talk 21:17, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm glad I'm anonymous. =P There are so many Dennis(es?) on this page that it penetrated my brain. Point remains though; this is an enormous leap forward for him.71.254.118.93 03:45, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

If you turn it up high enough it's pretty clear the singer says "The day is done (or gone) so won't you close that barbecue...lid." Not "once you". —Einstein runner (thorax.pngfile_icon.gifmail_icon.gif) 04:23, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

New Evolution

I think The Cheat's appearence has changed, do you? User:MICGAGUH

I noticed a little, but wait until the next toon. If it's still like it is now, new evolution. If it goes back to what it was before, mark it on this page under Remarks. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 15:21, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Uh, The Cheat's a male. User:MICGAGUH
I know. What does that have anything to do with what I just said? Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 19:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
He wasn't referring to The Cheat by saying "it". He was talking about the Cheat's Evolution 72.14.73.85 11:43, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh, now I get why you'd say that. And you're right, Annony.Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 17:42, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Who's Annony? User:MICGAGUH

Uh, guys...

Lowercase I on the loading screen. SI.com!

I added it to this page and the Lowercase i's page. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 15:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Audio Quality and Sofa

Anyone think the audio in this cartoon is lower quality than usual? Also, the sofa Strong Bad and Strong Mad are sitting on is larger in the end scene than the beginning scene. 128.172.204.174 23:10, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Bubs' Stand

Should this location be added to the locations in the toon? I mean, it only appeared in PbtC form, but that didn't stop Bubs and Coach Z from making it to the Characters list. Monkeytender 23:42, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

who was blown away?

This is the best toon/short/anything by tbc of 2009! who else was awesomified? OpenSourceGreg 00:55, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the forum would probably be a better place to discuss this. Talk Pages are more about talking about the article itself. Monkeytender 01:11, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Important Things?

The "ATM Machine" (complete with "That's kind of redundant") was a joke on Important Things with Dimetri Martin a few weeks back. Might it be a reference?

Unlikely, it's a pretty common thing to joke about. There's even a pseudo-syndrome about it that's linked to in explanations. i think that's enough. — Defender1031*Talk 02:32, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Plus they've had RAS Syndromes before. A few more and we've got a running gag! I think it has a good chance, Strong Mad even lampshaded it here. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 09:48, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Where? When? — Defender1031*Talk 19:19, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
OK, it shouldn't be plural, but it says "PIN number" on the downloads menu. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 19:36, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
This is true. And they're both used in regards to an ATM (The downloads menu is ATM-themed). Is that notable enough to be remarked on? -170.223.0.54 21:20, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Not yet. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 19:05, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Further Redundance

The "2" at the end of the song is completely useless and an example of today's bad grammar. It could be considered redundant, further deepening the "ATM Machine" joke at the end.

That grates on me as much as "Where's it at".

Artistic license (and the need to rhyme) make this one perfectly excusable. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 17:03, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
PS. Don't pretend that bad grammar is a modern phenomenon. It's been around for centuries. It's only more obvious today because, with more widespread education and the internet, anyone can write, and anyone can read it. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:31, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

"Little Birdie" song? Really?

So, one of the real world references say the song is "strongly reminiscent" of "Little Birdie" from the Peanuts special A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. I see absolutely no resemblance at all since the songs are totally different style and have very different sound. I'd think this song reminds me more of the Sweaty R&B song. Can anybody shed some light on the "strong resemblance" or should this be removed? (the song is at 7:07 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51F0L_LVXBE and begining of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZFFF4tSXd0 -- Del Taco? 13:06, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I thought that sounded a little odd, but I couldn't find a video... now that I've seen it, I agree, I don't really see the resemblance... --phlip TC 13:12, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
What Phlip said 98.222.134.36 13:20, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm in full agreement. I don't think the reference should be there at all. I'm not really finding even slight resemblance. 146.122.71.68 14:02, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I personally see a strong resemblance in the first video, but I'm only one voice.--TimMierz 15:03, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I immediately thought of Little Birdie when I saw this video. The voice used is similar, both songs open with the bass line, are about the same tempo, have similar drumbeats, and contain lyrics made of questions addressed to a yellow character who speaks without words. Besides, The Cheat flying with the Woodstock dotted line would be out of place were it not part of a larger toon-wide reference. --CaseyEllo
Well, the scene where The Cheat first leaves the house is strongly peanuts style, both songs have basketball scenes, not to mention the flying like woodstock thing would be totally out of place. I think there's a definite peanuts reference here, though i'm not entirely sure that little birdie is it. Does anyone know if they ever did a different song that's closer to this than little birdie is? If not, then i'd have to go with little birdie as a reference. — Defender1031*Talk 19:19, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
The way they leave the house is pretty much always Peanuts style. The musical style of this song bears virtually no resemblance to "Little Birdie." I found the clip as soon as I saw the reference on here and I thought I had found the wrong song. Content, style -- neither one matches up with Little Birdie. A dotted line behind The Cheat and an oft-used "leaving the house" shot aren't enough to make this a reference to that song.146.122.71.68 14:03, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Both these links are dead. Is there a video anywhere else? If someone finds one, it probably would be a good idea to link to it from the article. Bleu Ninja 23:38, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

That would be bad idea, seeing as they were removed from YouTube for copyright violation. 98.222.134.36 23:46, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Heres a link the the song again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRwEfbpO5CY . I couldnt find one with the scenes that accompany the song in the Thanksgiving special, but if my memory serves me right, snoopy wakes up woodstock to help him set up the table, they procrastinate by playing basketball, woodstock gets crushed by the ball, they get a pingpong table out...then i think the rest is just snoopy playing pingpong against himself and fighting a lawnchair. I have to still disagree about this being a reference to the song. As said above, they always leave houses "peanuts style"...thats just how they draw it. They fact that they both play B-ball is a bit of a stretch... is every cartoon where someone plays b-ball to music a peanuts reference then?? And the songs are COMPLETELY different style... there are countless songs that begin with basslines that have steady tempos. and "little birdie" is jazz while this definitely not jazz. Though I agree that the dotted line flight is a woodstock reference, the song is just not at all alike. Del Taco? 14:54, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Nobody knows vs. But he knows

In the lyrics, after "don't let Strong Bad know," I hear "but he knows", but the transcript says "nobody knows". What do other people hear here? TimMierz (Talk | contribs) 14:49, 21 April 2009 (UTC) (left unsigned)

Nobody knows. 64.198.255.1 14:52, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I heard "but he knows" too, "nobody knows" didn't even occur to me.Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 17:39, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Not at home, not listening to it right now, but "nobody knows" is what I remember. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 18:28, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Listen closely, it's definitely "nobody knows". It sounds better, it fits the tune better, and it makes more sense. — Defender1031*Talk 19:19, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
It's definitely "nobody knows," but you could mistake it for "oh but he knows." 24.165.150.118 06:43, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
The "no" syllable is definitely quieter than the rest (on my first listening I didn't hear it... I thought it was merged with the "know" at the end of the previous line), but it's definitely there. --phlip TC 09:35, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I listened to it again and heard "nobody". Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 09:45, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Note also that the lyrics during that section appear on the musical score. -170.223.0.54 22:13, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, but it only displays up until right before that point. — Defender1031*Talk 22:15, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I hear absolutely no second "no" syllable, even with volume turned up all the way. Are you sure you are hearing it? My feeling is, the syllables have to be merged, like you said, or else he is saying "but he knows." My first reaction watching it was "Please don't let Strong Bad know...body knows," but I guess it could be "but he knows" too. [Nebulon] 10:33, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I definitely can hear it. It's somewhat muted, but it's there, and it's a distinctly different syllable then the "know" of the preceding phrase (it is a perfect fourth lower). 98.222.134.36 13:24, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I hear "nobody knows" with headphones on. --Cass from Germany 17:59, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Two the Cheats

When the cheat is shown doing flaming layup drills you can see him in the same shot twice. I think this is an example of duplicate characters - Wecannotbesaved 15:27, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Indeed it is. But according to wbwolf, we don't count music vids and montages. ColdReactive 15:31, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
See Talk:Duplicate_Characters#Secret_Song for the reasoning. I do agree that occasionally, it can be a little unclear (is the two The Cheats a design choice, or is it really happening?), but I'd rather err on the side of caution. wbwolf (t | ed) 15:53, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
This isn't an overlayed image like in Secret Song, it's a single image of two The Cheats in the same place at the same time. I think it's clearly an instance of Duplicate Characters (which is what I came to this talk page to mention).71.254.118.93 21:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I have to agree, unlike the other music videos, such as secret song, where it's clearly an overlayed image, and these peoples try to fade me, where it's clearly presented in the style of a commercial music video, this toon is presented much more as though it simply follows The Cheat during a given day, with musical accompaniment. There's nothing really else in the song (aside from the self-contained PBtC section) that implies visual alteration (well, maybe the part that shows the music score). At any rate, I think this instance is notable enough to be an exception to the general "exclude music visual" rule. -170.223.0.54 21:24, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
The things that imply visual alteration in order: The music score, the moving diagrams on the blackboard, the sports card, the scoreboard, the quick cuts showing the cheat sinking several shots, the balls filling the screen, the multiple the cheats, the ending shots showing earlier parts of the song. You'll notice that most of them are near the end. I'd call the part after flaming lay-up drills sufficiently montagey to say that it doesn't count. — Defender1031*Talk 21:33, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I'd also wager a guess that The Cheat flying could imply visual alteration. Unless he just learned to fly/has never done it before.Monkeytender 22:03, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Almost Entire Song = Fourth Wall Break

You'd realize this soon enough, just thought I'd bring it up. Or don't we count music videos? ColdReactive 15:59, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Musical theater does not equal Fourth wall break. Where in this toon do the characters exhibit an awareness of the audience? 64.198.255.1 16:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
The singer isn't supposed to be noticed by the characters normally. The singer is singing to the toon, and this means that the characters are aware they are in a toon, meaning that they know they are not real, meaning a fourth wall break. ColdReactive 16:13, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
After re-watching, I'd agree that when The Cheat has a direct interaction with the singer (about lay-up drills), that could be construed as a fourth wall break. I still do not consider the entire toon to be one, in particular, I don't think that when Marzipan or Homestar happen to be singing along constitutes a fourth wall break. I'm not fully sure whether I think the concept should apply since the toon is, like you said, somewhat like a music video rather than a "normal" toon. I'm curious what other people think. 64.198.255.1 16:40, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
It's possible the singer himself is a cartoon character. BBG 19:25, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't think interaction with the narrator (singer) is the same as awareness of the audience or one's own fictional status. The singer and the other characters are merely discussing Teh C. in song form. 71.254.118.93 21:07, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Goof

Is is just me or does the cheat walk in front of the TV a little bit in the first scene? Namely his back leg(?) - Wecannotbesaved 15:04, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

It's just you. I checked frame by frame. Thy Not Dennis (t/c) 18:13, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Um, leg? What on earth are you talking about? The Cheat has sclipula. —64.198.255.1 18:32, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I was too busy to do the frame by frame review at the time, but looking again it must have been just me - Wecannotbesaved 02:16, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

That's Redundant!

Considering that fact that Where U Goin' 2? Visuals has been created to describe all the visuals that occur during this toon, is there any need to include {descriptive tags like these} on this article? For example, Happy Dethemberween just contains the lyrics and describes the way they are sung. There is no mention of any close-ups or zooms. So should they all be removed from this article? Alternatively, is there even a need for a visual page if not a lot happens in the music video? – The Chort 18:43, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm of the second opinion myself. I don't think there is too much going on in this toon visually to put it all on the main page. -170.223.0.54 18:50, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Since we have a song interspersed with dialog, I think having notes during the dialog parts is appropriate (see Trogday 08). wbwolf (t | ed) 20:43, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Which is exactly how it is currently set up. — Defender1031*Talk 21:06, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, there's a problem, and one that had been bothering me significantly. The "dialogue" in the middle of the song is clearly meant to be recitative (most of it even rhymes!), so it seems silly to include the stage directions during those and not the rest of the song. I'm for nixing all the stage directions except those involving Strong Bad and Strong Mad's conversation. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 16:21, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
