[edit] SB's voice

Is it just me, or does ol' SB's voice sound significantly different in this email? Qduk 21:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Huuuudge: Batman?

That Huuuudge looks like something off batman I saw... dont know when though...

[edit] Lure...?

I couldn't help thinking that maybe the Fangly Fish's lure should have been something that attracts other fish... Not scares them away.

Well, it's apparently trying to lure them with promises of free puppies, ginger snaps and Pocket PCs. -- Mithent 14:20, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

[edit] Civil Rights Speech?

  • I believe the line "It is a time of desolation, chaos and uncertainty. Brother pitted against brother; babies havin' babies." comes from a famous speech made by someone during the Civil Rights movement, but I don't remember the exact one. Does anyone know?
    • It reminds me of Ghostbusters ... "Dogs and cats living together..."

About this Fun Fact: I'm not contesting it or recommending it for STUFF, but a quick Google search turned up nuffin. Anyone have an idea? --[[User:Southpaw018|Southpaw018|talk]] 16:12, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

PS: Sorry for the triple edit, folks. I wasn't logged in and then my sig ended up elsewhere on the page ;) --[[User:Southpaw018|Southpaw018|talk]] 16:14, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

Well, I feel like it should be STUFF'D at least for being phrased as a question. Maybe I'll do that in a moment. In addition, I know that those phrases are famous, but I'm not sure they were used collectively in any speech. I think they may just be clich賠of hard times. But I don't know for sure. --Vannav 18:30, 29 Nov 2004 (EST)

The "brother against brother" part is a cliche American Civil War line, the rest, I'm not too sure about. - Dr Haggis - Talk 17:05, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
The "babies havin' babies" line is used by many an old folk nowadays upon seeing a young mother. Say, 16-year-old high school student with a 5-month-old child. Babies, having babies. It's funny. --Bellatrix 18:22, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)
Yeah, I certainly couldn't find anything regarding the Civil Rights movement that involved this quote. I've removed it from the page. I also didn't like how it read "might possibly have come from a famous speech...but not for certain." Though as noted by Drhaggis, the "brother pitted against brother" part is common of American Civil War discussions. -- Tom 22:00, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

I hate to be cynical, but after reading this wiki for a few weeks it seems like people are trying to make a reference out of every joke in Homestar. The line "It is a time of desolation, chaos and uncertainty. Brother pitted against brother; babies havin' babies" isn't in reference to anything, it's just silly. I mean, we live in a society, which means that we're constantly borrowing from what's already been done, but I think that it's being over-analyzed in cases like this. For a better discussion of the issues, see the South Park episode, "The Simpsons Already Did It" ;) -- 24.21.86.243 13:15, 30 Nov 2004 (MST)

IT IS A REFERNCE, however to something different than what others might have said. This seems as a reference to "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, which describes a time of desolation with brother pitted against brother. The Babies havin' babies is just an extension of that.

By that logic, it could be a reference to WAAAY too many things.
I say we change it to "it's a common phrase for certain wars" and leave it at that, or drop it all together. We don't know what specifically it is a reference to, considering how broad it is, so why keep it? --Shadow Hog 20:03, 30 Nov 2004 (MST)

[edit] Subject Lines, etc.

  • This is the first email in which we are shown the subject line. Also, this is the first email to have all the functions of a real email program (reply button, forward button, subject display), except for weird dream.

We might have to wait until next week, but these could just be new features of the Lappy. So, is this a fun fact? (I'll copy it over to STUFF, so please reply there.) --oddtodd 21:25, 29 Nov 2004 (MST)

[edit] Horns

  • Not sure where to put this, but I noticed that one of the characteristics Strong Bad lists of his creature is "horns," but the picture shows antlers, which are completely different from horns.

Also, the creature doesn't have power doors. ;) FireLily

  • He could very well have a fifteen year powertrain warrenty, though.
I think it's noted, but if it's not, that can go under remarks, or maybe goofs. — talk Bubsty edits 05:17, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Three Voices

Is this the first time we've heard all three people lend their voices to any toon? (I mean, of course, Matt Chapman, Mike Chapman, and Missy Palmer.) --oddtodd 17:57, 30 Nov 2004 (MST)

Probably not. Mike does a lot of undercover voices.--porplemontage 05:03, 1 Dec 2004 (MST)

[edit] Speculation?

"This might be the farthest that Strong Bad has ever taken an e-mail sender's grammar mistake."

This seems more like subjective rather than objective info. Besides, what about "Homsar"? I'm pretty sure he's taking that email mistake pretty far, making a regular character out of it and everything. And now you'll probably argue that that's a SPELLING mistake and not a GRAMMAR one, but, eh. Can we STUFF this? --Bellatrix 21:20, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

[edit] Fun Facts Arguing With Each Other

We have fun facts here that refute other fun facts. This is very, very bad - a page is giving contradicting information to the viewer. I almost deleted the facts that are being refuted, but given that these facts are listed in STUFF, I'm not sure I'm allowed to do this (even though they have decline votes). Should anyone remove STUFFed fun facts, or only certain users? --Tim333

[edit] Dissing Strong Bad's Vocabulary

Who is dissing Strong Bad's vocabulary in these fun facts repeatedly? It seems condesending and somewhat stupid.

Be darned if I know, but to whoever it is, please: stop. He doesn't have a limited vocabulary. He just has a habit of sometimes using words in the wrong way, often for the sake of humor. So please stop adding it in, we're tired of editing it out. --Shadow Hog 18:44, 7 Dec 2004 (MST)

[edit] Lappy Startup Noise

There have already been two mentions of the Lappy's startup noise in the Fun Facts section and I thought it would become even more convoluted if we continue to cotradict each other in an article (shouldn't that be moved to STUFF anyway, or at least here?), however I wanted to ask people's opinion on the possibility that the startup noise is a truncated version of the part of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" used in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Is that too much of a stretch?

I think it's actually a variation of the old Macintosh startup sounds from the 90s. -Nemesis
Way too much of a stretch. The Lappy startup noise is two notes an octave apart, which has been used in plenty of places, the original Game Boy for instance. (A reference to Zarathustra would probably take at least five notes.) Mister Mister 08:42, 4 Feb 2005 (MST)

[edit] The Red-Steckled Elbermung

The illustration of the Red-Steckled Elbermung seems to be in the same drawing style as Lem Sportsinterviews's book "Everyone is Different."--DJ Samurai 07:52, 4 Feb 2005 (MST)

[edit] Foster's reference?

The final of Strong Bad's made-up animals, Sterrance, could be a reference to Terrance, the evil bully-of-a-brother of Mac, the main charactor of the Cartoon Network show, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/fosters/index.html). Sterrance is blue, which could be areference to "Bloo", another one of the show's main characters.

I don't see any similarity. — InterruptorJones[[]] 07:54, 2 Feb 2005 (MST)
P.S. Sign your posts.

[edit] Let's take it to tha next *clüb.*

Out of curiosity, how likely is it (and how STUFF'Dworthy is it to mention) that the woman on SB's back deck is the same woman from the 'Lectric Boots box in extra plug? On the one hand, they're both blonde, with blue clothes and red shoes; on the other hand, the Boots girl is wearing a shirt and capris while the Fangly Fish girl is wearing a dress. And sunglasses. Azure Haights 23:27, 17 Feb 2005 (MST)

Well, since they're two totally different drawing styles, the best you could assume was that they are two drawings of the same woman - but since it just appears to be a generic blonde woman, I'd say it's a pretty big stretch. The fact that they both have red shoes and wear blue (as you noted, not the same clothes) doesn't make it any less of a stretch for me. --BaconSandwich 00:40, 18 Feb 2005 (MST)
Fair enough. Although I figured, since we can presume they're both portrayed in some sort of *clüb*... Azure Haights 10:52, 22 Feb 2005 (MST)
Furthermore (okay, okay, I'll shut up after this one!), now that I notice it, the SBEMAIL! video put the Powered by the Cheat woman on the Club Technochocolate floor. Like, 4 times over. Azure Haights 00:26, 8 Mar 2005 (MST)

[edit] Baby Doll Crazy Dance (Declined)

When Strong bad realizes that he can't be a fangley fish and dance on top of the fangley fish at the same time, you hear an Atari sounding noise, and the "Baby Doll" dancer starts going back and forth really quickly. I think this is a reference from an old Atari 2600 game, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one.

  • Accept: Looks good to go

  • Revise/Weak Decline -- Basically, this is the same sound made when you roll over the 'store' button on Main Page 13, as well. Even so, there doesn't seem to be any indication in the wiki page for that what game (or games) this sound could have been taken from. [edit] Off-screen typing (Accepted as a rewrite)

Normally, Strong Bad doesn't type anything into the computer unless the toon is focused on him, and in the cases he does you can hear him typing. In this cartoon, you can see at the end that Strong Bad typed in all his Sterrence comments, but the toon was focused on Sterrence and no typing sounds were heard.

  • Neutral Figured I'd add it here first for approval, because I could be wrong, but I believe this is the first time it's happened. Might need a rewrite too. Kamek 05:50, 15 Dec 2004 (MST)
    • Accept ...Though it's not the first time. I can't remember where I first remembered seeing this, but it was some time ago. I'm not totally inclined to go through each and every one to find out, but I do remember instances where cutting back to Strong Bad revealed that he had typed what he was doing as a voice-over. --TheEggman 11:20, 17 Feb 2005 (MST)
      • Comment. This happens again in best thing, when it cuts away to show the videotape that the Limozeen cartoon is on - when it cuts back, it shows that SB typed what he said during the cut-away, but no typing was heard. --TheEggman

[edit] Just me being picky (Declined)

  • Comment. The possibilities for ambiguity with this voting system are just endless, aren't they? Since it wouldn't seem fair for me to cast the deciding vote and then immediately end this, I'm going to wait for someone else to do that (if I were voting, I'd just make it more confusing and say decline; I don't understand what this guy is saying at all). --MadEwokHerd 11:21, 1 Jan 2005 (MST)
  • Decline. I'll make it difficult... The thing is, the whole issue is quite ambiguous, since the way the perspective works, we never see the keyboard and it's possible that Strong Bad IS able to type without us seeing. See rock opera - it could be something as simple as TBC not wanting to take the time to really work out the logistics of getting SB's hands where the viewers can see them. --TheEggman 01:31, 10 Mar 2005 (MST)

[edit] Fanglyfish (Accepted as a rewrite)

The Fanglyfish is Strongbad's interpertation of a real-world animal called the anglerfish. Apparently he's unaware that only lady anglerfish get to have the Christmas lights and lures.

  • STRONGLY rewrite, if not decline The Anglerfish part is obvious. The other part might be significant, but it doesn't feel like NPOV as written. --Jay 20:30, 2 Apr 2005 (MST)
  • Rewrite. "Though Strong Bad wants to be a deep sea fanglyfish, like an angelerfish, he doesn't know that only the females of this species get to sport the Christmas lights and lures. Fizz to the 123
  • Accept but rewrite I think it is true, but take away the female lures part. -- User: Lappy 486
  • Rewrite. "Strong Bad's 'fanglyfish' is inspired by the real-world anglerfish. It should be noted that, in actuality, only the female anglerfish possesses the lights and lures which Strong Bad refers to." The part about lights and lures should only apply to the real anglerfish, and Strong Bad shouldn't be blamed for lacking knowledge. For all we know, things could be different in the H*R universe. --Beatfox 22:12, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
  • Decline Wether or not you're right, the fangly fish is still a made up animal. So it doesn't have to reflect nature at all. --AnarchyBalsac

[edit] Christmas Lights

I think I've discovered another sort of error, although I don't know if it's a goof or a glitch (there seems to be some grey area between them). While trying to capture an image of the Homestar Lure (for use in personal Quote of the Week images), I tried pausing the Flash file, and advancing frame by frame through the 'fangly-fish' scene. The Cheatfish that swims by lays over top the fangly-fish in most respects, except that the 'Christmas lights' were OVER the The Cheatfish image (and they also keep changing colour while paused). I dunno if this is enough to merit some sort of goof or glitch, but I felt it needed to be mentioned somewheres. --DorianGray

The christmas-lights-still-flashing-while-paused thing isn't a glitch, it's simply a remnant of how they are made in flash. And even if it was a glitch it wouldn't be notable - in my opinion this comes under the same heading as outside-the-frame glitches - you're not supposed to watch it paused, when watching normally you'll never see it, so why bother to handle it? However the cheatfish going behind the christmas lights is notable. However it's not a glitch or a goof - we generally put PbTC glitches under remarks, assuming that TBC did it intentionally as a joke about how bad Teh C.'s flash skills are. --phlip TC 04:05, 2 Oct 2005 (UTC)
Ah. I really wasn't much referring to the change-colour bit, which is why I put them in parentheses (I figured it was something along the same reason why Homestar keeps blinking when paused or on certain CD covers). I really just meant the Cheatfish/layering thing. Nice to know where to put it, if such a thing occurs again. --DorianGray

[edit] I know this is a little off topic but...

The lappy's time truely has come... to quote Strong Bad: "babies havin' babies." well I saw this story today (hope this link works): http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001/20060328/1719163210.htm

[edit] TBC Commentary

I've never heard any of the commentaries, so I'm not very familiar with either of TBC's voices. However...

MATT: Uh, so, look! The Cheat, out of nowhere! Look! There's my voice! There's the Cheat-whale.

Since Mike only does the voices for the PBTC cartoons, this seems like a very odd statement for Matt to make. Are we sure it was him and not Mike? The makuta 05:19, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

It was the Powered by The Cheat segment when he said that, I think. He was talking about the Homestar lure, which was definitely his voice.
