Good Boring or Bad Boring?

Oh my god, I can't believe I just watched that. How can I get back the four minutes of my life I lost? Why TBC WHY?

Intensely boring shark-jumping action!!! I liked those fireworks.

It was SUPPOSED to be boring. All the "interesting" characters were acting dull as heck, while the more "boring" characters are hyped up on caffeine or throwing wild parties. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:01, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Space Ghost Homage?

I know this would be horribly shot down if I tried to put it in Fun Facts, but given that TBC likely watch Adult Swim, I can't help feeling that this email was a Space Ghost Coast to Coast homage. Watch an ep like "Fire Ant" to see what I mean (10 minutes of Space Ghost crawling across a landscape muttering inane threats!). Aurora the Homestar Coder 04:21, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I don't think so, in Space Ghost it just has him walking around on his knees for ten minutes, here Strong Bad does stuff, but said stuff is pretty dull. The Pardack

It was more the tone of the email that reminded me of SG -- long awkward pauses with nonsensical comments, and then all of a sudden something crazy happens... Aurora the Homestar Coder 16:50, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Format Problem?

and this should probably be working... It appears that the first apostrophe isn't being processed as part of a command... Crystallina 02:04, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dont know what's happening with that.. now it shows up as the italicized text is showing up bold and vice versa.. - EMJS

Loved It!

I LOVED this email!!--That crazy DumDe!

I gotta say, Matt did some AWESOME voice work here, Mike's animation was completely, boringly awesome, and the background music was some of the greatest yet! The humor was over the top and Homestar closing his eyes make me fall off my chair laughing! --Homeschool Winner 02:48, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Bubs' speech

He said "I remember learning math in school" .. I put my speaker at full volume .. It's math - EMJS

I had mine at full volume too and I'm certain it's "that". "Math" doesn't really fit the context quite as well anyway. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 02:56, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Listened to it a few more times (speaker at full volume as well) and it was unmistakably "that"; clear consonants and everything. Crystallina 02:57, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Listened to it a few more times and must apologize for me thinking so .. it is just that Bubs' voice is so .. "unclear" let's just say .. that it is hard to tell between the two when he is the speaker. - EMJS

Niels Bohr

Since I changed the entry to say who the picture was for, I figured I'd put my justification here. The picture is addressed to "S2," and it seems reasonable to interpret S-squared as Strong Sad.--Big Dog 03:12, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Plus, Strong Sad is the one who's a fan of him. Crystallina 06:04, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, "S squared" is the same as "S multiplied by S" which would be written as "SS" for Strong Sad --No Smorking 11:58, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Algebra aside, and speaking of mathematical strings, S² is a common abbreviation for SS --phlip TC 13:09, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Possible Inside Reference

Bub's "Be's" was last heard from Stong Bad in the bet ("Let's see you be's cool"). Was there any other occasion?

The toons-menu description of Homestar vs. Little Girl 2 says, "Little Girl be's cute." That's why I don't think this is a reference. It is just a word the Brothers Chaps throw out now and then. --BazookaJoe 11:53, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wowowowhat?

I'm rather convinced that Strong Bad says "What?" at the same time that Homestar says "Wow," but this doesn't seem to be a universal view. Opinions? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:00, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

They both say Wow. I'm 100% certain.

Not sure, myself. Listened again and I can't quite tell, but I'm leaning towards "Wow" simply because it doesn't make much sense for Strong Bad to say "What?" when he just finished talking with Bubs about that very subject. Crystallina 06:05, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It is kinda hard to discern, I'll admit. However, I can VERY clearly hear that SB's intonation rises (as though he's asking a question) as Homestar's falls. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 06:13, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm almost positive I hear "Wow" here instead of "What". Strong Bad has kind of a strange way of saying it, but it's one I hear very often in his voice (it's usually "Whoa" or "Ohh", however). His intonation rises, but falls at the very end. It doesn't sound like a question to me. Also, I don't hear a hard "t" sound, and I think that would be pretty noticeable after checking it a few times. The entire word doesn't seem to have any hard sounds. Lastly, check out his mouth; it starts out with a rounded "o" shape then opens up into its normal rectangle shape. I think "Wow" fits that far better than "What" does. Now that I see both sides of the argument though, it's hard to be sure. Some more opinions would be nice. - 71.113.43.208 09:36, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure SB says "Woah" and then HR says "Wow". --phlip TC 09:54, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It is definitely definitely definitely not "what". SB's intonation rises as homestar's falls yes, but if you try to block out homestar's and listen JUST to SB's inotation, you'll notice it falls again after the rise, which is EXACTLY how someone says "woah" or "wow", with a rise then a fall. Can we please PLEASE not leave "what" there? It looks like no one but Jay is advocating it being what, so why is his opinion trumping everyone else's? It's so very obviously not what. maybe it's woah maybe it's wow, but for god's sake let it be changed! Either of those is better than what. Woah or Wow are both probably correct, they're essentially the same word, but it isn't what!

Nothing? No one cares that anyone who changes the "what" gets reverted despite, from what I see, no one else thinking that's what it is? sigh.

Eh, I hear "what" too. Aurora the Homestar Coder 05:55, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It's got to be "wow". Like Anonny said up there, it's the word that fits the movements of his mouth best. Or possibly "whoa", but definitely not "what". — It's dot com 17:37, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Good point. He does have a round mouth while saying the line, so it probably isn't what. Aurora the Homestar Coder 17:42, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
He has a round mouth when he says "what" earlier in that very scene (In "What are you... um... doing?") But I listened more closely, and I think I'm starting to agree with "whoa" - but it's definitely definitely definitely not "wow", to quote Anonny up there. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 20:51, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sudden stop?

This toon stops most of the way through (when Strong Bad is listing three letter words and types "cod, for, her") for me, can anyone help? I've tried everything. Refresh, Hard Refresh, Cache clearing, saving the .SWF...can anyone help me? -User:Homestar Runnar

Elaborate. I think it's MEANT to do that...

Auugh!

What the- I don't usually send e-mails but this week I sent in ten a DAY and none of mine ever get picked! Whaddaya need, 100 a day? Poofy

Probably more. TBC get thousands a day and only a tiny fraction are ever read at all. Aurora the Homestar Coder 14:26, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, they get about 3,000 a day, (although a ton are from websites in which people signed up and didn't want to submit their own email addresses so they use Strong Bad's) so it's pretty **** hard! Some time during the summer I'm gonna write 100 emails a day (It should take less than an hour each day) for 10 days and send in 1,000 on the same day. It's very obnoxious of me, but I would love myself if my email got in. -- Homeschool Winner 02:53, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I see vs. Eye see

We need to reach a consensus. Does Homestar say, "More like... Eye see," or, "More like... I see"? I think the joke here is that he says I see because he can't close his eyes. --BazookaJoe 11:51, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I agree. It's the issue of Homestar seeing as opposed to Strong Bad, so there's emphasis on Homestar, and seeing as "I" represents Homestar, emphasis on "I" instead of "eye" makes sense. Suicune64 12:14, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Agreed - that's how I saw the joke as well. Crystallina 16:38, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
no, wrong! the joke is that Homestar is saying the word "eye". This may also be a reference to a previous halloween cartoon, where Homestar claims the noise that eyes make is "seeee... seee...." You see the character of Homestar says stupid things a lot. You should consult his character page for more information. It's eye, not I.

Footnote time. We don't want to look stupid. I'd say it's obviously "I", though. TBC don't go in for those kind of cheap puns...

I think we should leave it as is, by the way. The same thing was done in "for kids" with SB saying "I'LL KILL ALL OF YOUR DOGS/DOLLS!" and it looks fine.

I think the footnote DOES make us look stupid. How does "eye" fit into that context at all? --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 15:51, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The whole "Eye" thing needs to go. It doesn't make any sense and is really stupid. -- Joshua

Eye agree ... I mean I agree ... it's I see. Get rid of the footnotes! -- tomstiff 16:07, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Doing

Strong Bad saying "What are you...uh...doing" keeps getting inserted as an inside reference to car, but since it keeps getting reverted, it apparently is not. Just mentioning this "worthless non-fact" to prevent further mistakes from being made by folks who don't page back through the history. 221.218.44.253 16:28, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Indeed. The doing/doyng car reference is currently in STUFF. Please do not add it as a reference at this time. --BazookaJoe 17:19, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Easter Egg Goof?

I added this fun fact, which was later removed by tomstiff:

  • On the King Of Town easter egg, you see a free-floating hand holding a mug of beer or soda, that is not connected to any character on the screen.

The response was "it belongs to the blonde behind KOT".

To me, it looks like a goof. It doesn't appear that the hand is connected to an arm or any person. Even homestar, even though he's armless, doesn't have a hand when he's holding something. Not a big deal...just looked like a legit goof to me. What does anyone else think about this? --Duke33 16:47, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Just looked at it again. Sure looked like the mug, hand, wrist, & forearm belong to the Blonde Pom Pom Girl. -- tomstiff 18:00, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it has an arm. The arm is really skinny, so you might have thought it was a finger or something. --No Smorking 18:11, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ok - I looked again, and this time increased the resolution, and I can see that I was in fact wrong...although you gotta admit that it's kinda weird looking. --Duke33 16:36, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, since when were Pom Pom's girlfriends anatomically correct? -- Homeschool Winner 02:55, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I WAS WAITING FOR THIS???

OMG! I waited weeks for this! And look what came out! It was BAAAAD! But I did like the hyped up Strong Sad and the party easter egg. -Kinsey

Is this page the place for comments like this? (I'm actually wondering.) I thought the talk pages were for discussing the ongoing development of the articles, not for chit chat. It seems like the forum would be a better venue for remarks like these. Am I right or wrong? — It's dot com 20:04, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Right. The forum was set up to get rid of general comments on the wiki. —FireBird|Talk 16:44, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Bugs?

When Strong Bad says "Well, take care, Bubs", it sounds to me like he says "Bugs" instead of "Bubs". Is this just my imagination or what?--4.244.45.46 01:16, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I heard that too. I just wasn't sure. That's why I didn't add it to the page. --Technochocolate 05:31, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Three Letter What?!

Can we link this list somewhere in the fun-facts? I think it would be interesting E.L. Cool 16:04, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Sure, why not? It's only a link, not changing any text. {adds link} Oh, and look, there's "yok" in the list after all. — It's dot com 16:10, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Forgive me--evidently this has been discussed already, but I can't find the discussion--what in the world is "yok?" I googled it and got a Sydney-based graffiti artist(s?), a Japanes quasi-punk band, a software company with two titles, both for mac, and the Turkish Council of Higher Education. Were TBC referencing any of these? — notstrongorbad
Actually, "yok" is in the list of 3-letter English words. In fact, all the words except "sbu" are in that list. The word "yok" is a variant of "yuk", as in "to laugh, yuk yuk yuk", not "ooh, yuck, that's gross". — It's dot com 06:14, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

They even mention this e-mail with reference to job/jorb.--12.222.78.0 20:51, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC) Sorry; forgot to log in.--homestar3.14 20:52, 3 Aug 2005 (UTC)

SNAP!

I dunno what happened, but when I saw Bubs' back after Strong Bad left, it seemed like a gap in the frames.

Yeah, it looks a bit weird, but given the shot of "real" with the closeup of SB's mouth, I think it's intentional. It's in the transcript now. --phlip TC 20:49, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
This email had a couple of things in its flash video that I feel are uncharacteristic of TBC: the use of the default flash object zoom, for example, that doesn't quite zoom accurately, making objects appear to move laterally while zooming in - Bubs' back, for example. Perhaps that's intentional, but it looked different as well as being somewhat unique among the SBemails. --Southpaw018|talk 21:53, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
As somebody who uses Flash on a regular basis, I can say that the way certain objects appear to move laterally when zooming is, in this cartoon at least, intentional and not a symptom of Flash's crappy zoom. I imagine TBC probably made objects such as SB's computer stool move at a different rate to the background to make the whole scene seem less flat.

Actually, I think that was an intentional skip, because it went along with the beat of the boring tune. --TaranchulaVamp15

Whoa!

Do we really need to differentiate between "Wow" and "Whoa"?

Well, Anonny, according to the above thread, several people think it's one or the other, but aren't necessarily sure which. I myself think it sounds like "whoa", but his mouth movements suggest "wow" more. Hence, the footnote. — It's dot com 22:18, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
It just seems weird. Phonetically they're about one sound apart, and neither of them have any meaning other than to suggest surprise...
It's not so much to differentiate between them, rather that if it's not there, people will constantly edit it one way or the other, and the edit history will be flooded people changing it from wow to woah and vice versa. --phlip TC 22:56, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What about an only-visible-on-edit note?

I don't think that's good enough. First of all, the note is to readers, not editors. There will come a time when this page isn't edited that much. Second, like I said, most people are sure it's one or the other, but even after repeated examinations, they can't decide between the two. As long as there's that uncertainty, a footnote is appropriate. — It's dot com 21:44, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Personally I really thought Strong Bad said "What?"

Tejas

Well I changed Tejas to Tehas before, now I see it's back to Tejas with a link to history of Tejas, but I think the whole point was missed.

If I'm reading that line, or even reading the page it links too, and I don't know J is pronounced like H in spanish, it sounds to me like this site is saying the word is pronounced Teh-Jas, with a hard english J. If you want to leave the J there, please at least have it mentioned somewhere that it's pronounced like an H.

And I still don't think changing it to Tejas signifies the H sound any more than Texas does. Ever heard how they pronounce "Mexico" in spanish? Meh-hee-ko. X can sound like an H too. If the purpose of the Tejas line is to communicate that it's pronounced like an H, it doesn't communicate that at all. Please either make it Tehas or put somewhere that the J is pronounced like an H for the sake of accuracy. 216.203.251.141

Alright, no one cares to respond. I just noticed it was It's dot com who changed it to Tejas. And insisted no less.

Why? Is it just because I'm not part of this group that any change I try to make gets reverted? Whose blessing do I need to get to be able to fix minor snafoos I see without having to make a big thing about it every time? How is Tejas better than Tehas in that sentence >_< Alright, If for some reason someone NEEDS to see Tejas there, even though it doesn't represent what's actually pronounced, I'll attempt a compromise. If someone else can word what I'm adding better, fine, but don't do it just cause you want it worded YOUR way please, do it because there's an actual better way to do it. And if it's just plain reverted altogether this time without at least someone letting me know why here, I'm done trying to contribute, it's just power abuse and it'll happen every time I try to improve something. 216.203.250.80

hey man, I understand what you want to do, and why you think it would be an improvement, but I completely disagree with you. I like it the way it is because it is properly spelled and completely accurate. You are suggesting that they purposefully misspell a word because of the way it is pronounced. That would just be backwards. When SB says "Tejas", he isn't speaking English, he's speaking Spanish, and therefore, proper Spanish spelling should be used.
If SB were to speak French and say "oui", would you suggest that they spell it "whee"? -nueve-
Nueve makes some excellent points.
I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner, Anonymous. Every now and then (about once a day) I just flat out lose consciousness for what seems like eight hours at a time. It's very disconcerting, believe you me. Then there's the business of my having to earn money. Man, going to work can really cut into your online wiki time, can't it?
The reason "Tejas" is superior to "Tehas" is that "Tejas" is an actual word, and Strong Bad is saying that word. I realize that knowing how to pronounce it requires people to be just a little culturally literate, but failing that they can look it up, and failing that they can go watch the cartoon. The transcript is supposed to document the toon, but it doesn't have to spell out every little mundane detail. And it's not like "Tejas" is unheard-of in English-language contexts. Here's a website based out of India called Tejas Networks.
You're right that "Texas" and "Tejas" are pronounced the same in Spanish, but "Tejas" is the preferred form in Spanish-language contexts, even on web pages with both English and Spanish elements. — It's dot com 17:26, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Just a comment: Tejas has been used in a previous e-mail transcript... Crystallina 17:37, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The way Strong Bad pronounces the phrase "Her" (here) is similar to the way that rap artist Nelly pronounces the word in the song "Hot in Herre", and is possibly a reference to such.

Easter Egg Transcript

I dunno about you, but it doesn't really sound like they're singing along to the song, and more like they're laughing at some kind of joke:

  • Pom Pom's girls are OBVIOUSLY laughing, though I can't say as there's ever been a time when they said much else.
  • Pom Pom's bubbling kinda sounds like laughing (like, say, how he laughed in A Jorb Well Done), and the way his head bobs up and down kinda implies it too, but since it's just bubbling and not actual words it could go either way.
  • Homsar's just being Homsar.
  • The KoT, though, and what I think REALLY gives it away, says (from what I make of it): "Yes, ooh, that's mighty funny!" It doesn't sound much like the lyrics to the song at all (where in the clip does Homestar make an "ooo" sound?), and, if that's what WAS going on (a joke, hence why the KoT says it's "mighty funny"), it probably WOULD elicit the responses above, and it would probably make more sense.

Thus I think we should probably rewrite that mini-transcript there. Thoughts? --Shadow Hog 03:25, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I agree that they're not singing along... I thought at first that the KoT's was saying "{something} and I'm partying" or something, but listening now it doesn't sound like that... it could be "{something} and I'm funny", but it doesn't sound like "mighty" to me. But the transcript probably should be changed. --phlip TC 05:39, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I hear "party" from from the KoT. Which fits singing along with the song. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 05:10, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I can see why, but the rest of it really doesn't match up (the only parts that sound like "party" would be the two at the end; "Yes, ooh, that's" doesn't sound anything like the song). In fact, I'd say the only one who'd really be "singing along", assuming that's what they're even doing, would be the KoT; the rest I seriously believe look like they're laughing. I don't think it really adds up. --Shadow Hog 14:00, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I distinctly heard "There's no exciting party," as if the KOT was trying to cover it all up. Then again, my hearing leaves a lot to be desired.--<text color: "magenta">Tiggera 05:01, 13 Jul 2005 (UTC)

Coach Z

At the end when Coach Z says something like Jorb is a 4 letter word, then he says somethiing like pot, but it sounds stuffed up, does this happen to anyone else?

It plays a small clip from the KOT easter egg.

More references than usual?

Did it seem to anyone else that there were way more inside references in this email than in any others? Even the new scroll button rap is from another email. - Aaronak

2600 music?

At least to me, the music played from when Strong Bad leaves the Lappy , until Strong Sad shows up sounds similar to a part of the song "Video Computer System". Anyone else think so? --81.230.154.89 16:50, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

potential goofs

  • During the close-up on SB's mouth, the grass behind him is actually Bubs' shirt.
  • When SB leaves Bubs, before the camera zooms out he starts moving, yet his head doesn't move up and down the way it does when we can see his feet.
