Ding! montage is a featured article, which means it showcases an important part of the Homestar Runner body of work and/or highlights the fine work of this wiki. We also might just think it's cool. If you see a way this page can be updated or improved without compromising previous work, feel free to contribute.

Opinion

A brilliant e-mail, filled with funny jokes and catchy songs. I especially admire the "Strong Bad In Love With The Wagon Fulla Pancakes" montage. Great stuff. - 82.37.217.206

Hellboy Funfact

24.58.1.117, if you insist on having the Hellboy funfact then you need to explain where it comes from. -YourFuzzyGod (sorry about not signing)

Yeah, I agree with YourFuzzyGod. Seriously, WHERE is the connection? Not all of us have read/watched Hellboy, so some kind of explanation would be nice. Shadow Hog 16:41, 10 Nov 2004 (MST)
We've not gotten any explanation. Therefore, I don't see why this thing is still in here; it's just too obscure for me to get, and I seriously doubt I'm alone.
Either way, I'll leave the code here for people to mull over. Shadow Hog 21:01, 18 Nov 2004 (MST)

*Homestar's pronunciation of "pamcakes" could be a reference to the comic (and movie) ''[[Wikipedia:Hellboy|Hellboy]]''.

Doesn't Coach Z say "The pamcake wins!" - i.e. echoing HR's mispronounciation? -- PrinceOfTown

-- I think so, I changed it.

Is this the best way to represent a montage?

Some of the scene changes are off slightly. At least one photo is missing from the end credits.

Uh, in the fun facts it says this is the first email to be written by a Hrwiki member. You guys should clarify that you mean the email itself, not Strong Bad's response, unless an HRWiki member actually wrote the script (which I doubt you meant).

Background of the spinning scene

I watched the e-mail again just now, and noticed the background of the scene where Strong Bad and the wagon are spinning around has been corrected to a bunch of blurred trees. I watched it several times when it first went up though, and I'm fairly certain it was static then. So I restored the fun fact.

Watered Down

Need the Watered Down fun fact be there? There's really nothing indicating that it is a reference to Watership Down in the slightest. (And as I've read the book about three times, I've noticed the lack of any real connection even more.) --TheNintenGenius 00:45, 14 Nov 2004 (MST)

I have nothing wrong with it having been removed. I had a problem with it being removed with no explanation to back it up, or any summary at all. That's the kind of Wiki-ing that we don't want.
That said, your reason works for me. Shadow Hog 17:45, 14 Nov 2004 (MST)

Question Mock

(Forgive the pun.)

From "Fun Facts:"

Strong Bad, who makes a point of criticizing every e-mailer's
spelling and grammar, makes a critical mistake here himself.
"Why don't you creat an alternate reality where you don't have to spell
correctly and I talk like this." should have a question mark, but it doesn't!

Since Strong Bad is trying to mock the e-mailer, I think his use of a period instead of a question mark was intentional. In the e-mailer's "alternate reality," proper punctuation could go out the door too. --oddtodd 21:31, 19 Nov 2004 (MST)

Even if this was unintentional, it doesn't strike me as a particularly fun fact. Mister Mister 18:53, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

Dear people at hrwiki,

I seriously appologize for my rude ways of edditing, which are also crude.

I ment no harm, please write a response later.

Downtown?

Are people really hearing "downtown" in the training song's lyrics? I originally had it as

It's a showdown going down
Now you're gonna mess around showdown

but it's been changed to "downtown" more than once. Mister Mister 18:51, 2 Dec 2004 (MST)

I'm pretty sure it's "downtown". Keep listening to the showdown easter egg and you will hear "town". ~PurpleKoopa May 23 2005

hellboy (Declined)

"Pamcakes" might be referring to a two page story which appears in Mike Mignola's "Right Hand of Doom" graphic novel in the "Hellboy" stable. The 2004 film version also contains this mispronounciation of the word.

  • Decline--Just a Cleaver Homestarism. Mr. Sparkle

Pants (Incorrect - corrected and added)

Homestar wears pants in the "Im The Best" Easter egg. This is possibly the first time Homestar wears pants.

  • Weak Accept: While it's not entirely fun, it is a fact. But please, check to see if this is really the first time he wears pants. -acekirby13
    • It's not. Check out the Halloween episodes. However, it's already on the montage page with the "besides Halloween episode" qualifier. --Jay 13:47, 15 Feb 2005 (MST)

Unemployed? (Declined)

In montage, The Cheat is said to be unemployed. However, he has been a paid lackey since he'd known Strong Bad. (might fall under montage fun fact too).

  • Decline Yeah, and "lackey" looks real good on a resume - Current Salary: pencil shavings... Seriously though, as it is with just about any kind of gag, it involves something being exaggerated. Strong Bad was asked to create a montage - so he made some up... emphasis on "made up". --TheEggman 21:39, 12 Mar 2005 (MST)
    • Second. --Ian 18:52, 17 Mar 2005 (MST)
  • Accept Just because it's a bad job with very poor pay doesn't mean its not a job. And, technicly, the entire catoon series is an exagerated gag. Posted by: -erson Talk 14:16, 14 Mar 2005 (MST)
    • Comment. I disagree - even if the series is loaded with exaggerated gags, there are still accepted premises. Also, don't forget that the end credits photo montages usually give narration from some point after what takes place in the montage - The Cheat could become unemployed in some toon in the future, which would make this item moot. In any case, as I said above, SB was asked to "creat" a montage, so the result was something he completely made up - in that respect, whatever comes of it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be canon. --TheEggman 08:43, 17 Mar 2005 (MST)
  • I know the current is going towards a lot of declines, but this is one I have to ACCEPT. I actually think this fact is a decent one. ISlayedTheKerrek 10:37, 22 Mar 2005 (MST)
  • Comment. I just realized the problem with this item: there isn't really a discrepancy here. Lackey is #96 while Montage is #117, so it's possible that The Cheat could have become unemployed (as a lackey) between then and...then. We're not told about anything regarding The Cheat's job status in the meantime, so this isn't really that notable. (And my comments above about the montage not being canon still stand.) --TheEggman
    • Not necessarily. I am sure that if Strong Bad did lose his The Cheat, we would have heard about it. I'm sure The Cheat is more valueable to him than his Compy, but look at how much he freaked out when it was shotgun'd, If he lost The Cheat he would probably be depressed for a few weeks. Also, in extra plug, The Cheat still stands by, wating for his orders (to plug in the shoes) which would indicate he is still a valueable lackey to SB. And I realise that he "created a montage", and the results dont have to be completely true. However, there is nothing indicating that it is UNtrue either. Limozeen?

I saw the best thing sbemail, yeaterday, and recognized immeadietly that there was a connection with Strong Bad's show and the Limozeen Pilot episode for their cartoon show. I wrote it as an inside refrence, does anyone else see that connection? If not I will gladly take it off. If so I will add it to best thing's inside refrence list.

  • I removed this for two reasons: 1) It's a fast forward, not an inside reference. 2) I see no connection whatsoever, besides the fact that the Brothers Chaps made jokes about cancelled TV shows twice. I really should have stuff'd it, though, so I'll go do that...

"You're the Best" on South Park

If it wasn't for this e-mail, I probably wouldn't have recognized the song they used in the montages in the most recent episode of South Park (904, "The Losing Edge") - they used "You're the Best", and each time it played, I could only picture Homestar lying on the mat at the champeenship singing it. It was funny. --TheEggman 20:36, 9 Apr 2005 (MDT)

I know it's a late response, but it is episode 905, not 4. Elcool (talk)(contribs) 12:50, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

DELETED! at the champeenship?

Am I hearing things, or is that the DELETED buzzer that plays after the Wagon wins the champeenship, and then plays again in the easter egg? Frickinsellout 08:47, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, it is, although that's not really surprising, seeing that TBC reuse sound effects all the time (after all, who'd want to have to record a new one each time?) Heimstern Läufer 08:56, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Zoo?

Pamcakes

According to IMDB, in the 2004 film Hellboy, he says "What landed you this job, pushing 'pamcakes'?" Though IMDB's info does not confirm or deny, this may easily predate the November 2004 release of this email. Before we dismiss this one, let's do a little research. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 06:43, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Plus the Rejected Costumes indicate that The Brothers Chaps are quite possibly Hellboy fans. Thunderbird 09:46, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
I always thought that it was just another example of Homestar's speech impediment, though I have to admit I've never seen Hellboy. Seeing as they've referenced Hellboy before, however, this reference doesn't seem too much of a stretch. Oh, and by the way, this has been discussed before here. And here. Has Matt? Fixed glitch?

I just noticed that the little sound bit at the end of this email doesn't play any more. I thought it might just be my browser, but it works in both Firefox and IE. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking either the Brothers Chaps might have fixed it, or it may have fixed itself the last time I updated Flash... -Lukeonia1 09:21, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I used to notice glitches like this in lots of emails on my old computer, and don't any more. I suspect they're not actually glitches in the flash file itself; rather, they seem to be the result of the video being lagged slightly and desyncing from the audio. Thus, at the end of the email, the sound plays forward into the easter egg segment while the video track, several frames behind, is still approaching the "stop and wait" command. I used to be able to force glitches like this to happen by running memory intensive programs while watching the cartoons. Upgrading Flash might well have been enough to fix the problem on your end; mine just went away when I got a faster computer.

"You're the Best" Easter Egg

The score doesn't show up for me. Anyone else? Danny Lilithborne 05:06, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

It works for me, but it's darkish-grey-on-black... maybe you need to adjust your screen, or something? --phlip TC 05:08, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Yo Adrian!

I'm surprised this isn't mentioned anywhere in the article, or even here on the talk page. All 6 Rocky movies have a training montage at some point, and 5 of the 6 movies have a scene or Rocky running up the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (now known as the Rocky steps. While I don't think the concept of a montage in general is a reference to that, the training montage might be, esepcially since part of it involves the Wagon running up steps, and the general "you can do it" feel of the song is somewhat similar to some of the songs from the movies (such as "Eye of the Tiger"). I'm tempted to add this, but if it hasn't been added by now, maybe I'm way off, so I'll let this sit for a few days and gather some opinions. - Ugliness Man 00:56, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Since nobody responded after so long, I was going to edit the article and add this... only to discover it was already there. Oh well, at least I can fix the Wikipedia link to one that's more direct. - Ugliness Man 22:21, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Unlikely fun facts

Regarding this revert, why are these fun facts here? The "Homestar's pants" fact is listed above as "Closed STUFF", but it's nowhere to be found in the STUFF archive. The other fact, as I see it, is just plain speculation. And about the "unceremonial removal", does everyone really agree that those facts belong in the article, or should they both be STUFFed (again)? — SamSF%20sig.jpgFisher (Come in, Lambert.) 19:50, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

It's not in the archive where you looked because it came before the reformat of STUFF two years ago (wow, has it really been that long?). I don't like the pants fact (besides the fact that I think Homestar wears tight, white, long pants, I think that it makes too many exceptions for a "first"). As for "Watered Down" being said to avoid another "Eh, Steve", I think that's probably true, even if it is a guess. — It's dot com 23:04, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
My thoughts exactly on that pants fact; we shouldn't have any facts in "first time except all those other times" style. Though I still don't agree with the "watered down" fact; I think it's much more likely that Strong Bad just made that name up because he was mocking the sender. I don't think you would allow me to re-open a closed STUFF (even if it was from an "obsolete era"), but please give it consideration. Those facts are just so awkward. — SamSF%20sig.jpgFisher (Come in, Lambert.) 23:33, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't have a problem removing the pants one, since it was never really voted on (it almost has two people who don't dislike it enough to vote against it). — It's dot com 23:44, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Noting the alleged author

I honestly forget what concensus was, or where it was discussed, all I remember is I was against it. But are we noting email's alleged authors (even with proof/trust weighing in their favor) in the trivia? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 02:37, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's the discussion I think you're thinking of: HRWiki talk:Emails from HRWiki Users. It looks to me like the consensus was more or less to include notes about the sender of an email only on the article for the email, and only if the claims of authorship could be satisfactorily supported. Trey56 02:46, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, that was it. My read differs from yours, Trey. I read concensus there that user and talk pages are suitable for such notations, not articles. (You mentioned the HRWiki namespace, but you were the only one showing strong support for the page being in the namespace in question.) I'm thinking concensus reached really was no noting of the authorship of emails in the main namespace at all, unless there was incontrivutable proof (I mentioned notarized emails, posted here before it aired, etc.) The real question, of course, is whether this is a legitimate edit. The link previos in this talk is dead. Tom alone said it was "good enough for [him]". Was this verified, and can proof be produced today to show it was (more than one user's account, for example)? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:17, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, keep in mind that most of the talk page concerns existence of a separate HRWiki namespace page to document this info. I wasn't commenting about that issue, but rather whether any people on that page thought that trivia about email senders should be indicated in the article itself. From what I see, I don't see as many people strongly objecting to that, as long as it can be substantiated.
Moving away from that particular discussion for the moment, there's at least one instance since then in which we were sufficiently convinced of a user's claim to authorship that we decided to list his identity in the article: PlasticDiverGuy, the sender of underlings.
So, I think that the wiki is okay with including authorship notes in trivia sections of sbemail articles as long as they can be substantiated. Whether or not Porplemontage's claim fits the bill is up for debate, but it looks like it does to me. Trey56 03:29, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
