Logo

Why is the sloshy logo upside-down? Is there a real band with such a logo? Bad Bad Guy 18:24, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure, there's a lot of post-modern/post-punk bands that will use upside down or reversed logos to go along with an unconventional image. Most famously is Nine Inch Nails's logo. KMFDM released an ep titled MDFMK. R.E.M.'s 1985 album Fables Of The Reconstruction is written in a circle on the LP, so it could also be read Reconstruction Of The Fables. This is a case where it's not referring to a specific logo, more of a general attitude. To me, sloshy sounds like equal parts Weezer and emo or shoegazer bands.wbwolf (t | ed) 19:19, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Is it just me or does this band sound EXACTLY like a loving caricature of the band Pavement? - Mr_Vorhias (August 20th, 2007, 3:36 PM EST)

It's not just you, I thought of Pavement when some sloshy came on. - Punching Kittens (August 23, 2007, 8:23 AM EST)
Not just you, no. They sound a lot like Pavement to me as well. Eric Mushroom Wilson 17:29, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

How do you input the upside down characters? Also, they're not showing up in my IE-like browser. Is there some kind of language pack that needs downloaded? (Personally, I don't think it needs to be upside down in the text. That's what the picture is there for. Also it's confusing for folks whose browsers it doesn't appear correctly in.)--Antisexy 20:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

For the upside down characters, you need to have a Unicode capably browser and font. Firefox and newer versions of IE are able to do it. wbwolf (t | ed) 20:52, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, as for flipping it, http://www.revfad.com/flip.html is a useful site. — Defender1031*Talk 20:54, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Cool. Well, I still vote that it doesn't really need to be there, in case anyone cares about my opinion.--Antisexy 20:58, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I lean toward agreeing. The given text doesn't really replicate the text of the band's logo that well, for one thing, and it is likely to be confusing for those with older browsers. I would suggest that "(typeset upside-down)" combined with the image would likely do the job just as well. Heimstern Läufer 21:05, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
But it looks so cool. — Defender1031*Talk 21:09, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I vote we keep that combination of both right-side-up and upside-down, and just put a little note next to the upside-down one saying that it's upside-down, for those who have browser issues. Hey, if Wikipedia gets to have foreign languages that won't display properly, why can't we have upside-down letters that don't display properly? Hagurumon 21:21, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I originally put the flipped text on the page, but now I agree that it should be removed. It doesn't display properly in all browsers, and the logo can easily be seen in the image on the right. Loafing 22:42, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

How did you guys get the first letter to be lowercase? 72.83.150.246 00:39, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, the logo is all in lowercase. And Strong Bad types "sloshy" with a lowercase s. That's why we spell it that way. – The Chort 12:42, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I get that part, but I've got a wiki of my own and can't make articles with lowercase first letters. How'd you manage that?
We have a special extention installed in our version of MediaWiki which allows us to name pages with a lowercase letter. We've had it for a long time, mostly because of Strong Bad Email titles. I don't really know too much about it. --DorianGray 04:41, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh. Alright. Thanks anyway. 72.83.150.246 04:49, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
You need to set $wgCapitalLinks to false in LocalSettings.php. That option controls whether to automatically capitalise the first letter of the page title. --phlip TC 06:28, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Softly

Does the logo remind anyone else of the logo for Softly peanut butter?

(Link.)

It has the sleek, all-lowercase font, the red "o", and the elongated tail on the "y". Probably not a reference, but I thought it was kind of a cool coincidence.

Just the o. Though Softly does sorta sound like sloshy. But other logos have red o's too, such as Mobil's. Homestar-Winner (talk) 19:05, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Name that Genre

Let's sort this out once and for all: what genre is sloshy? Personally, I'm 100% certain they're Alternative Rock. They have all the stereotypes of the genre: No lead guitarist, glasses, little mainstream success until the death of Hair Metal, short hair, no costumes, electric guitar solos, songs with weird titles that aren't about girls/Los Angeles/good times. The list goes on. Furthermore, the appearance of Limozeen: "but they're in space!" validates my theory: in the episode, they were knocked off the charts by an alternative rock band who had short hair and glasses. Then, Strong Bad throws the remote at Strong Sad "for you and your kind destroying metal!". sloshy, a band which Strong Sad is a fan of, must therefore also be alternative rock. Plus, sloshy can be compared to They Might Be Giants, and we all know about the close relationship between the band and the website. I rest my case. – The Chort 15:45, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Well I guess I consider all the trappings you speak of the be more associated with Indie Rock than Alternative Rock. To me Alternative Rock (capital A, capital R) went mainstream around 92/93 and that tag came to mean something other than alternative rock (small a, small r). While the same thing may happen to the indie tag I think that the sort of underground, small club, pitchfork appearing, college radio band that sloshy is a caricature of is better called indie rock (the Pavement comparison is fitting I think). For that matter I would never think to call They Might Be Giants Alternative Rock, only dads in their 40's would make that mistake. They are clearly indie pop...clearly. The Alternative/Indie Rock tag is fine with me, as with any of these sub genres peoples connotations for a tag will greatly influence what bands they thing fit that tag (emo anyone?). -Goodness Of Fit
Sloshy is totally alt. rock, definately. They sound exactly like "The Cure", if you ask me, and the cure is 100% alternative.

Strong Sad image

What is the point of the Strong Sad image? It doesn't really add much to the article, and it makes the page look weird. --Trogga 17:05, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

I disagree, and add a {{clear}} if you think so... — Defender1031*Talk 17:06, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Why do you disagree? --Trogga 17:12, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Because it makes the article look fuller. — Defender1031*Talk 17:14, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
But it's just Strong Sad with a shirt on. It's like putting an image of Strong Bad wearing a Limozeen‎ shirt on the Limozeen‎ page. --Trogga 17:25, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

I like the Strong Sad image because it shows the logo in two different contexts, which each are colored a little differently. — It's dot com 17:26, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Plus we don't have an actual picture of the band or any of their albums. The next best thing is an image of their biggest fan. – The Chort 13:56, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
I think an image of a sloshy t-shirt is a good thing to have on the aricle. It's extra stuff about the band that otherwise wouldn't get mentioned anywhere else other than Strong Sad Wearing A Shirt, which isn't about the sloshy shirt so much as it is about Strong Sad wearing it. If there were an image somewhere of Strong Bad wearing a Limozeen shirt, that SHOULD be included on the Limozeen page.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 21:34, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, Strong Bad has never worn a Limozeen shirt. – The Chort 20:42, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Sloshy vs. sloshy, the plot thickens

So, in the Quote Of The Week for August 23, 2007, Sloshy is capitalized. Do we chalk it up as a goof, or does this affect our lower-case theory?--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 07:06, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Hmm... I think that the t-shirts and Strong Bad's typing outweigh the Quote of the Week, so I think our article should stay lowercase. Also I'd say it's more of an inconsistency than a goof. Trey56 07:16, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
A similar difference was shown in senior prom and its following quote, in which we noted it as a remark. --DorianGray 07:19, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
I don't think the T-shirts (which just feature the stylized wordmark) carry much if any weight, but Strong Bad's typing certainly does, considering he's such a stickler. At any rate, I amended the article to state that sloshy is usually written in all lowercase. — It's dot com 14:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
I actually think that Quote of The Week outweighs Strong Bad's typing, it's not like it's rare for him to make spelling errors and the like, and stylised logos are totally meaningless, I think that the correct title would have a capitol letter.--~ SlipStream 06:32, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh contrè. The QotW isn't always correct. For example, when they did the Where the Crap Are We? quote, they put "Naw, it can't be heaven. There's not enough Twinkies," despite the fact Strong Bad clearly says "No". Did we change the transcript to reflect the erroneous QotW? No, we didn't. Furthermore, Strong Bad types "sloshy" with a lowercase "s" four times. I hardly think Strong Bad made the same mistake four times in a row. Keep the title the way it is. – The Chort 13:04, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok, it's sure now, Limozeen vs. Sloshy had it with a capital. Mooooooving.--~ SlipStream 09:11, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I think this move was done too hastily. Notice the name is lowercase on the T-shirts page in the Store, and twice on the actual record cover in Limozeen vs. Sloshy. Survey says: move it back to the old title. Has Matt? (talk) 09:21, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
The record cover is stylised, that hardly counts. Anyway, it has been titled to be Sloshy two times by non-HSR universe sources, characters may like calling it by it's stylised logo, but it has been shown that TBC sees it as a capital at the start, by two definative sources.--~ SlipStream 09:26, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm not talking about the stylized logos, I'm talking about where it says "Limozeen plays sloshy's" and "sloshy plays Limozeen's" at the bottom. And the Store is a non-universe source. Anyway, don't we usually care more about what goes on in the toons than what goes on outside? Has Matt? (talk) 09:35, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I'm with Has Matt?, if you couldn't tell. The ONLY case of a capital "S" on sloshy's name in Limozeen vs. Sloshy was the title; the record itself uses a neutral font and consistently capitalizes Limozeen, but decapitalizes sloshy. --Jay v.2024 (Auld lang syne) 09:55, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, my opinion about how it's written on the record is that they were simply copying the style of the logo, maybe I should wait for another toon and see what it says.--~ SlipStream 00:59, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm starting to seriously conisder capitalizing that s. If we inlcude the summary for the concert podcast, their name was spelt 3 times with a capital S and only one time with a lowercase s.

Logo Background

The gray boxes in the background aren't part of the logo. They're just the background of Strong Bad's imagination when he's trying to prove they're a metal band. Every other time the logo is shown it's on a solid color (usually black) background.--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 05:28, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Plus, the black background looks nicer/makes it easier to read. suǝʇʇıʞ ƃuıɥɔund 23:07, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
I disagree, there are rarely ever cases where a modded screenshot is necessary, and this certainly isn't one of them. — Defender1031*Talk 23:10, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Still, the black background looks fine. No need to bother changing it back. Someone changed it back already. In that case, I thought the black background looked more attractive. — It's dot com 01:05, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, it may not be necessary, but it doesn't really hurt anything. It does add a little bit of professionalism to have the irrelevant background edited out. I wouldn't have worried about it myself, but since Punching Kittens went through the trouble to make it and upload it, what's the harm in using it?--.Johnny Jupiter! talk cont 07:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Actually, my friend made it and insisted that I put it up. I did have to endure the hardships of uploading and editing. My fingers still have a dull ache that sorely reminds me of my commitment to friends. Anyways, are we changing to the black background or keeping the gray bar background? suǝʇʇıʞ ƃuıɥɔund 08:59, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
I am that friend that edited it, I did it because in every other place(save one, if I recall correctly) where the logo is seen, it is seen on a black background, so I figured it would be canon almost. Also the black background one is larger, which could be a small advantage--Scald my lake 23:30, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Song list

To be pedantic, we don't know for certain that "we don't even really care about you" is the name of that song. It is conceivable that the actual name of the song is one of those listed on the album. There is plenty of precedent for this within their genre. The evidence in favor is that the title is 4 times longer than any other explicitly known title. But even if it were one of the songs listed on the album, it's not 100% clear which it would be. "ok fine" would be the best guess. --Nsayer 17:40, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Strong Bad does describe the song as "that song called 'We don't really even care about you'" in concert... anyways, the point is moot now with Limozeen vs. Sloshy. --phlip TC 10:52, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
actually, the word "moot" means "worthy of debate" rather then the opposite. but you're right, it is no longer worth discussing the title of that song. Sompm 20:23, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Actually, "moot" means both "worthy of debate" and "not worth debating". 68.103.176.24 22:27, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup

The song list, the album list and the discography are different from other band articles like Limozeen. I must confess, I don't actually know what it's supposed to look like. But I do know that it needs fixing ;-) Loafing 19:13, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

In comparison, here's Cool Tapes. They differ so much, it's hurts. Do we need to set up a standard? I think the Limozeen article looks great, and if possible, we need to apply that look to all other bands (like the members section). What say you? Bluebry 02:23, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
I think so, but it's already been partially done by the {{Infobox Band}}. The Goblin!! 21:19, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Sloshy members

I have a theory, leading from this picture I believe the guy who is turned around talking to the bassist is the drummer, then the guy driving is the keyboardist. I think that because Strong Bad says that they strung a bunch of christmas lights on the bass drum which would mean that they would have to be able to see the drummer. So that leaves the Keyboardist and bassist, but if you rember Strong Bad was wondering if the Bassists sungalsses lenses fell out so he would have had to of seen him clearly. So that just leaves the key boardist, now I think that because if TBC are running the same gag as we are to never see his face then that would make him be the keyboardist. That's just my idea though.

I don't know if you guys understand what types of sounds instruments make, but there are obviously no keayboards in any of sloshy's music. Just because they say there isn't any lead guitarist doesn't mean there's no guitarist at all. I picture the general stage presece of the band as:

The guy with glasses is the bassist. The guy in the black shirt is the drummer. The guy in the flannel is the guitarist who is turned away from the audience. The vocal duties are really up in the air, unless we want to try and compare the song vocal tracks with the voices in the easter egg.

You're forgetting however, that keyboard can make all types of sounds. The Goblin!! 23:27, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
sure, a keyboard can make all kinds of sounds, but having it set on guitar in every single song they play? I doubt it. that guy's definitely a rhythm guitarist. Sompm 20:29, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

I think the drummer is the lead singer, because i compared the cover by sloshy in limozeen vs. sloshy and the easter egg from the same toon. i invite anyone to do the same.

Origins

I'm not a native speaker of English, but sloshy sound more brittish than american to me. Anyone thinks so?

As far as I'm concerned, it's always been hard to make that call by ear. I thought I had The Decemberists pegged as British for sure after hearing a few songs, then I found out they were from Oregon. And that's just staying within the realm of alternative. American punk is rife with vocalists who very intentionally effect a cockney accent for some sort of perceived "cred". Then there are plenty of artists where one could make the opposite mistake if one didn't know better, like Led Zeppelin (who generally sound no more British than Jimi Hendrix or Cream to me) or James Hunter (who is a dead ringer for classic Motown). --TheNicestGuy 14:36, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh, that's hilarious. I didn't even realize Cream was British too. It's like Johnny B said in Misfits of Science: Rock and roll is the universal language. (Or something like that. I think. I haven't seen that show since I was an eight years old boy.) --TheNicestGuy 14:45, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Band Box Picture

Should the picture contained in the infobox be the logo or the actual (animated) band? Bad Bad Guy 01:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

That Category Isn't Necessary

Could someone remove this page from Category:Bands? None of the other bands' talk pages are listed and I can't remove it myself for whatever reason. Bad Bad Guy 19:34, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Fixed. Someone linked to it with [[Category:Bands]], which puts the page in the category, rather than [[:Category:Bands]], which makes a link to the category. (Images work the same way.) --DorianGray 20:40, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Lead Guitarist?

Strong Bad mentions that sloshy has no lead guitarist, but in "We Don't Even Really Care About You," I distinctly hear a guitar playing the main melody, rather loudly in relation to drums and bass. Doesn't that indicate a lead guitar? Or am I just totally confused about the setup of bands?--Gaeamil 06:47, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

I would suggest the Strong Bad being a metal fan as he is, would see the role of 'lead guitarist' as being the guitarist who performs the guitar solo. And, as it is stated, sloshy never has guitar solos — Flashfight 08:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
No, no, no. Youse guys got it all wrong. Lead guitarists, while it's true they play the solos, would only exist in bands that have more than one guitarist. Therefore, sloshy (Sloshy?) doesn't have a lead guitarist (or a rhythm guitarist, for that matter). --Mario2.PNG Super Martyo boing! 19:41, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

The Cure

I don't realy know if i added this in right, but it has to be said. sloshy reminds me of my favourite band the cure. the vocalist is a token Robert smith, and prety much sings exactly how he does (british accent, repeative lyrics, the song ending are also very similar). early in the seris stong sad was a fan of the cure (poster); my theory is that sloshy is a more alternative reinvention of the group.

The link to The Cure is very indirect at best. I would say it goes by way of shoegazing. Much of sloshy's performance style, if not particularly their musical style, sounds like a sterotypical parody of shoegazing. The Cure are sometimes considered "proto-shoegazers", even though the band formed more than ten years before the term was coined. --TheNicestGuy 18:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
The singer's voice is without a doubt a Robert Smith impression. — 70.55.80.245 (Talk | contribs) 23:07 March 18, 2009 (left unsigned)
