This article is about the the YouTube channel. For the website, see homestarrunner.com.

While almost all of the Homestar Runner body of work is hosted on homestarrunner.com or available for purchase, The Brothers Chaps have uploaded most of their toons to YouTube, some of which are not viewable anywhere else. It is also the platform for some of their side projects, such as Two More Eggs. Their main channel for uploads of Homestar Runner cartoons is called "homestarrunnerdotcom", but a few others were created before it became active.

homestarrunnerdotcom was first registered on October 1, 2007, but remained inactive until early 2009 when it began to see uploads of DVD versions of toons, including a few that were previously DVD exclusives. It was proven that the account is official when an alternate version of independent was released there exclusively. Most animations are provided in 720p HD, however some are supplied in 480p or 1080p.

The channel was active until December 17, 2009, and was inactive until September 24, 2014, when a new icon, a One Channel banner, and a few playlists ("Strong Bad Emails", "Halloween Cartoons", "Teen Girl Squad", "Decemberween Toons", "Puppet Stuff", "Live Action Crap", and later "Skills of an Artist", "Favorites", "Newest Stuff", "Trogdor!! The Board Game", and "Songs & Music Videos") were added. Strong Bad Emails were also renamed to include their numbers. In more recent uploads, Easter egg scenes featured in toons at the end were added, alongside fake thumbnails or autoplay screens in order to fake an ending to the video.

On March 27, 2015, a direct link to the homestarrunnerdotcom channel was added to the main site through a button in the NavBar, replacing the old Subscribe button.

Channel Description

Cartoons and more from the website HomestarRunner.com featuring waggly, animated animal characters like Homestar Runner, Strong Bad, and Cherry Greg. Also Trogdor! We should probably mention Trogdor, right? Oh man, this description is getting totally great! You can even PAUSE these videos unlike that busted old website! Also they have better quality sound! But none of those hidden easter eggs. YouTube doesn't know how to do that yet. Hey! That's one reason to keep Flash around! ONE!

Channel Banner

The YouTube channel banner depicts the twelve main characters silhouetted in white against a blue sky, with "HomestarRunner.com" written above. An Easter egg uncropped version is hidden in the page's source code. It is the same, except Homsar is above the image, hanging upside down in the sky, and Homestar Runner (saying "Strong Bad, what's with all this blank space down here?") and Strong Bad (saying "I dunno. I'm still tryin to remember who half these characters are.") are below.

The Turtle

The Turtle, pre-oatmealing

While reptiles are frequently mentioned in the Homestar Runner universe, one turtle in particular (apparently named Slowbie or Mr. Shoe) has been spotted several times, usually associated with Strong Bad.

It first appears when Buckethand Strong Bad, explaining a hypothetical situation in which he could use his bucket hand, dumps oatmeal on it. Later, a boy named Geoff found the turtle in his shoe and returned it to the terrarium on his desk. The boy claimed its name was Slowbie and renamed it Mr. Shoe. This was notable enough to be reported in the news on October 4th, as shown in a newspaper clipping from the Strong Bad Email time capsule. The turtle's mother, despite not returning her calls, is said to be proud of the turtle.

It appears in 3D in the Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People episode Homestar Ruiner, when it is one of the obstacles that contestants need to jump over in the Tri-Annual Race to the End of the Race. It is used as the symbol for "slow" in 8-Bit is Enough when Strong Bad talks to the enemies of Stinkoman 20X6. Strong Bad flips it upside down (along with Strong Mad) in sbemail206, as an April Fools' Day prank.

Other The Papers

At the end of most Strong Bad Emails, a link to email Strong Bad is printed on a piece of paper. Most of the time, this link appears on The Paper, New Paper, Compé-per, or CGI Paper; however, sometimes a replacement paper is used. This most often happens because the email or scene is a different style than usual (for example, Old-Timey or Powered by The Cheat).

Image Description Appearances
"The Future...Sorta!" Supra Modern Telegram is the Old-Timey version of The Paper. It is only seen in the DVD version of little animal, during an Old-Timey Easter egg. It is a gray paper that reads "-the end-" below its slogan, "The Future...Sorta!". The sides of the paper have darker gray boxes with letters and numbers inside of them. little animal (DVD version)
"Preeor..." Powered by The Cheat The Paper has been seen in two Powered by The Cheat-themed emails. Most of the time, it has the same text as The Paper, but in badly-formed letters. In DVD versions, YouTube versions, and Crazy Cartoon (its only non-email appearance), it reads ">>>The End<<<". It makes a vocalized "preeeeow"-like sound when it comes down. crazy cartoon/Crazy Cartoon, mile
We the people... In Strong Bad's dream email aboard the Nuclear Class Submarine "Soccermom", he uses an upside-down copy of the United States Constitution, with the email address written at the top in red. The paper is beige and looks old, with small tears and wrinkles. dreamail
An envelope... That's all. The Envelope Paper is an interdepartmental Manila envelope with "click HERE to email strong bad" written on its flap. Only the section marked "HERE" is actually clickable. The Envelope Paper's tenure was short-lived, only being used in one email alongside the Corpy NT6 after The Paper and/or New Paper disintegrated in the Lappy 486's explosion in the previous email, hremail3184. In independent, Strong Bad began using his new Compé for checking his email and the Envelope Paper was replaced with the Compé-per. imaginary

The Rest

"And the rest!"

"The Rest" are a group of three unnamed Old-Timey characters. They are only seen in the title sequence of Sickly Sam's Big Outing, when an announcer introduces each character, and never mentioned again. The audience also seem unfamiliar with these characters, as they react in confusion when they are shown.

The Rest consists of what appears to be an alien, a robot, and a worm-like creature. The alien is light-colored and resembles a stereotypical alien, with a large head, large black eyes, and nostrils. The robot is metallic and mostly square-shaped, with upside down triangle-shaped eyes, a zig-zag mouth, and dark hair. Dotted lines are faintly visible on his body, and he has diagonal lines on his arms, with a shiny ball for what appears to be each elbow (although his arms are not seen any further due to the circle border). The worm has a bowler hat and wrinkles, with circles around his closed eyes, one light and one dark. The area around his mouth is darker, resembling lips.

Occasionally, when a montage begins, it will be interrupted in the middle by something boring or out-of-the-ordinary, usually accompanied by the music abruptly stopping, and restarting when the montage continues.

Appearances

Side Projects

  • Two More Eggs — In the episode "Dooble: Peas & Corn", during the peas-and-corn training montage, the fun music abruptly stops as the camera cuts to Dooble slowly eating the peas and corn, then resumes as the montage continues.

Homestar Runner 20th Anniversary Show

"20 yrs ago, 2 dudes walked into a Kinko's and sorta changed one or two things forever! Come celebrate!"
"Homestar Runner LIVE in Atlanta! 20th Anniversary Show!"

The Homestar Runner 20th Anniversary Show was an event at Venkman's, a dining venue in Atlanta. The first show was on Friday, September 2, 2016, at 10:00 PM ET, the weekend of Dragon Con. It was first announced on @StrongBadActual on July 31 and later mentioned on homestarrunner.com in a main page message. It was a live show celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Original Book from 1996 and the introduction of the Homestar Runner body of work. Due to the large demand of tickets for the original date, the second show was announced at the later date of Friday, October 7 with the same content and showings. It was first announced on @StrongBadActual on August 22. Tickets were priced at $12-$25 USD.

Description

"Second show, second heads!"

Both shows featured The Brothers Chaps and Missy Palmer performing live music while being backed by Yacht Rock Revue. Some of the music performances included video content, and puppets were featured as well. Some people dressed up as characters from the Homestar Runner body of work.

The first half was mostly songs by the characters, with some songs performed by sloshy, while the second half was exclusively Limozeen until the end. Videos were playing during the first half of the show, showing the music videos for songs such as Rap Song, 2 Many Knives, and Fish Eye Lens in the background, while they were being performed on-stage. A brand-new toon, Homestar Runner Goes For the Gold, was also shown.

During the first show, at some point during the performances, the video AV stopped working, so Matt Chapman started singing bread sing-alongs with Puppet Homestar Runner, who said that the songs had the power to fix AV problems. This eventually became a running gag. After an intermission, Limozeen played, and flicked Limozeen guitar picks into the audience. The picks were previously shown in a @StrongBadActual Tweet. Towards the end, Matt invited Jamey Huggins, the person who thought of the name "Homestar Runner", to the stage to tell that story. Before performing the final song, Secret Song, Matt said that normally they'd have to wait 227 seconds before hearing it, like on Strong Bad Sings and Other Type Hits. At the end of the show, Matt said "Here's to twenty more years of making stupid stuff!", which was responded with a loud cheer from the audience.

Homestar Runner 20th Anniversary Shows

"Homestar Runner LIVE in Atlanta! 20th Anniversary Show!"

The Homestar Runner 20th Anniversary Show was an event at Venkman's, a dining venue in Atlanta. The first show was on Friday, September 2, 2016, at 10:00 PM ET, and the second was on Friday, October 7, at the same time. They were live shows celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Original Book from 1996 and the introduction of the Homestar Runner body of work. Tickets were priced at $12-$25 USD.

A brand new toon, Homestar Runner Goes For the Gold, was also shown at both shows.

Twitter

"Now I think I can Re-Tweet!"

In recent years, the social network Twitter has been used by The Brothers Chaps. It has hosted three official accounts over the years, only one of which is still alive and active.

On September 3, 2011, Matt Chapman created his personal account @ronginald, named after a Ron Planet comic strip. Many of his posts were Homestar Runner-related, stating that the series was not over. Around the time of the account's creation, another was created on September 29: @StrongBadActual. On January 22, 2013, @ronginald was deleted for unknown reasons. The account was then taken by a "lowly fan".

Starting in October 2014, after three years of dormancy, the Chaps started posting on @StrongBadActual. This account has hosted the vast majority of Homestar Runner content since then. It has even been linked to on the site, and has replaced strongbad@homestarrunner.com as the primary contact method for Strong Bad Email. Sometimes it posts exclusive images and videos, while other times it promotes recent Homestar Runner projects. The account responds to fans regularly, with the majority of its posts being replies. There is also an Instagram version of the account with the same username, @strongbadactual.

On June 29, 2018, the @trogdorgame account was created for Trogdor!! The Board Game updates. It was deleted for unknown reasons at some point in July or September 2018. Its Facebook equivalent, however, is still up. [[Category:Twitter|*]]

Discount Strong Bad Emails

On March 30, 2019, Strong Bad posted to @StrongBadActual:

For April Fool's day this year, I wish Bubs would feed all my sbemails into his discount neural network and see what kinda insane, eyeball-covered gold it would spit out.

This Tweet was followed by offers from numerous Twitter users to perform this experiment with actual neural networks. Janelle Shane, the owner of artificial intelligence blog AI Weirdness, extracted the text of every Strong Bad Email from the Homestar Runner Wiki and fed them into her neural network to produce over sixty original emails to Strong Bad, ranging from fairly coherent to unsettlingly bizarre. Strong Bad linked to Shane's "Discount Strong Bad emails" blog post on April 1st. On the 3rd, he shared audio of himself reading and briefly responding to one of the emails, and hinted that it could be made into something like a podcast.

Some of these emails are from familiar faces such as Dan, FL from anything and Clancy from long pants, while other senders, like Neal Haraldsson from Hamburg, are completely invented. The emails display a range of grammatical correctness that reflects that of the real email show, and make occasional oblique references to other parts of Homestar Runner, like the mention of a "pom-pom-pom" and a sender named "trudy marzipan". Additional emails, inquiring about such topics as building a horse and having swamp rats in one's bed, can be viewed by subscribing to email updates from AI Weirdness.

Toilet Paper

"What could be more posh than having a cat give you your toilet paper for each wipe?"

Toilet paper is paper used for going to the toilet. It is also a great tool for vandalism, alongside eggs, especially on Halloween. It is also a versatile material, as the empty tubes can be used in cardboard construction.

Paper towels are also exorbitantly absorbent, and used for cleaning up big messes.

Appearances

  • Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 7.0Strong Bad as "Safety Dan" assures Marzipan that her house is safe from Halloween egging and toilet-papering.
  • Email new hands (Easter egg) — One of the options for Strong Bad's new hands is a roll of toilet paper.
  • 3 Times Halloween Funjob — Strong Bad, Strong Mad and The Cheat go around the neighborhood toilet papering The Stick. They offer to give a roll to the King of Town in exchange for leaving them alone. Strong Bad also sits on a throne made of toilet paper rolls.
  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 11 — The girls are excited to attend summer camp now that it has working toilet paper.
  • Email monument — The left leg of the hypothetical Strong Bad monument is constructed from toilet paper rolls.
  • Strumstar Hammer — On the final page, the trophy is modified to resemble a commode, and is accompanied with a roll of toilet paper.
  • Email diorama — Strong Bad uses a cardboard toilet paper tube to construct a robot for his diorama displaying the assassination of president Jimmy Carter.
  • Email trading cards — One of Coach Z's trading cards says "Ol' Butt Patterson once made a castle out of toilet paper!"
  • Marzipan's Answering Machine Version 14.2Strong Sad reminisces about an April Fools prank when he and Marzipan replaced everybody's toilet paper with 100% post-consumer recycled toilet paper.
  • Email your edge — Rolls of toilet paper are one of the items in Strong Bad's arsenal of edge-havery.
  • Donut Unto Others — Homestar writes his secret recipe for doughnuts on a square of toilet paper.
  • Strong Badia the Free — Bubs is optimistic about Strong Bad taking over the world, because once Strong Bad drives the economy down the toilet, everyone will have to buy toilet paper from him.
  • Baddest of the Bands — Coach Z has a crate filled with "Colonel Rockbottom's half-ply toilet tissue", which he brands with his own logo. Strong Bad steals some to toilet paper The Stick and frame Coach Z. Strong Bad himself refuses to use the toilet paper, claiming that his butt requires at least seven plies.
  • Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective — When Dangeresque examines the ruby-powered rocket, he says that he ordered one of these from the back of a comic book, once. Only the ruby was plastic. And the rocket was a toilet paper roll. And the comic book was a napkin.
  • 8-Bit is Enough — If the player checks the bathroom cabinets, Strong Bad claims that they used the last of the toilet paper dressing Strong Mad up as "Squarehotep: The Vengeful Mummy".
  • April Fools 2014 — Part of the Strong Bad Desktop Theme includes replacing the default Recycle Bin icon with a roll of toilet paper.
  • The House That Gave Sucky Tricks — Coach Z is aghast at the two-star bed-and-breakfast's "failed terlet paper rose".
  • Record Store Day — One of the album covers featured in the montage for the song "B-est of B-sides" displays a toilet paper roll in a red-tiled bathroom with a Japanese "DVD" sticker reading "ALL TOMORROW'S EURO-RESTROOMS".
  • Posh Toilet Paper — In this Skills of an Artist episode, Strong Bad draws a picture of a roll of toilet paper being held by a cat statue.

Captioned Transitions

5 minutes later...

From the Teen Girl Squad Issue 3 DVD commentary:

STRONG BAD: Umm, I like a lot of the transitions I do, like "meanwhile at the thrift store"...
MIKE: Yeah, where you just kinda put it written on somebody's teeth, maybe; Battle of the Bands—
STRONG BAD: {simultaneously} Yeah.
MIKE: —I think, was written on people's teeth...
STRONG BAD: Well, usually it's pretty gross. Close-ups.

In Teen Girl Squad episodes, a scene transition will often be marked by a caption reading where and/or when the next scene takes place. The text often appears on a close-up of a person in some form, accompanied by Strong Bad shouting the text. These screens also appear in regular toons, albeit more normal-looking, without the Teen Girl Squad-style close-ups.

Appearances

Teen Girl Squad

  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 3 — As the scene changes from three of the girls getting lethal spring rolls to What's Her Face at a thrift store, the screen shows a close-up of a fat man holding a "meanwhile, at the THRIFT STORE" sign in his mouth.
  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 8
    • When the scene changes from the girls at school discussing their band to their first band practice, the screen shows a frail old man carrying what appears to be a large rock on his back, reading "after school".
    • The scene changes from the band practice to the Battle of the Bands with a close-up of a mouth with "BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!!" written on the teeth, surrounded by stubble, a small nose, and a large chin.
  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 10 — During the transition to The Ugly One's birthday party, there is a close-up of a mouth with mustache stubble and a soul patch smoking a cigarette with "AT THE PARTY!" written on it.
  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 11 — As the scene changes from So and So's summer job to the other three at summer camp, a close-up of a man's head is seen with "MEANWHILE at summer camp" written on it. He has large eyebrows and a disgruntled expression.
  • Teen Girl Squad Issue 15 — The scene shifts to the girls' prom with a close-up of a large-lipped man's mustache with "At The Prom." scrawled on it in white.
  • @StrongBadActual Tweet (18 Aug 2016) — Puppet Strong Bad sings The System is Down, and during the "DOOJ", a Teen Girl Squad drawing of a hairy arm tattooed "DOOJ" appears. The arm appears to be resting on a table with a big knife and a beer mug, holding a cigarette.

Other

  • Email credit card — Between the time when Strong Bad sends a credit card fraud-related email to Homestar Runner claiming to be the Superfied Credit Union and the time Homestar replies, a black screen reading "5 minutes later" in the Tandy 400's green font is shown.
  • Email suntan — While Strong Bad is sunbathing, a dark gray screen reading "6-8 hours later..." in the Compy 386's white font is shown.
  • Email more armies — While Strong Bad is waiting for the Vaguely Military Career Fair, a dark gray screen reading "2 weeks later..." in white is shown, and later "1 week later...".
  • Email your edge (Easter egg) — While Strong Bad and The Cheat are trapped in a dark room, which is just the Basement of the Brothers Strong, a green cross-stitch-esque screen reading "Three Hours Later" in white is shown. There is a white flower-like symbol in each corner.
  • Compy Catalog — While Strong Bad is waiting for the Compé, a black screen reading "2-4 weeks later..." in yellow is shown.

Homsartifacts

The Homsartifacts (also known as Homsarian artifacts or sacred elemental items of collection) are four artifacts that are mostly buried around Free Country, USA in the Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People episode Strong Badia the Free. The locations of the three buried ones (Strong Badia, Strong Bad's mailbox, and the Cinder Block) can be seen on a cave painting in the Homsar Reservation, and the remaining one can be bought by Bubs.

Putting the artifacts into the Homsar Reservation's mysterious pylon grants the user the ability to understand Homsar; however, observers will simply see both speaking non-sequiturs. For each artifact put in the pylon, a crystal on the pylon glows. The more artifacts are in the pylon, the more of Homsar's words can be understood. By putting all four in the pylon, the user can understand him completely, and even float like Homsar. This is undone if the pylon is destroyed. Homsar notes that ordinarily, after assembling the artifacts, one would have to face a punishingly difficult final dungeon and disappointing end cutscene; however, the ancient prophecy foretold of a young boy that would one day come to usher in a new era. The rest of the prophecy is unknown as Strong Bad interrupts him.

These artifacts play a crucial role in Strong Badia the Free. Strong Bad must collect them so he can understand Homsar, convincing him to join forces with Strong Badia to overthrow the King of Town. The pylon explodes after Homsar and Strong Bad perform a ritual (Homsar's wail) to reveal a cave. It is unknown if the Homsartifacts survived the explosion, or where their current whereabouts are.

The Homsartifacts

Image Description

Pottery Shard

The pottery shard is a shard of a beige pot. A couple of black flowers and a silhouette of Homsar can be seen on it. It is the only thing left in Bubs's stock at the black market behind his concession stand before Strong Bad trades it for Strong Sad's pretendix. Bubs says it's ancient and priceless when trying to sell it, but later calls it "just [a] broken piece of an old pot" while selling it and even implies he ripped Strong Bad off, so the shard most likely isn't particularly valuable. It is the only artifact that isn't found using the Taranchula Black Metal Detector, but it is implied that it was once buried like the rest of the artifacts, as Bubs says it's "from an illegal excavation in the Homsar Reservation".

Power Strip

The power strip is buried in Strong Badia next to the Cinder Block. It is a normal power strip, with no oddities or Homsar markings, although Strong Bad points out that it's covered in rust. He at first believes it to be ancient, then becomes confused when he realizes it's a power strip.

3-Ring Binder

This is buried near Strong Bad's mailbox. It has the appearance of a blue school 3-ring binder, with a picture of Homsar on the front. Strong Bad considers it "a priceless treasure from an ancient civilization, and a great way to get organized for back-to-school".

Tuning Fork

This "grodelated" tuning fork is buried near The Stick. When rung, it sounds like Homsar's wail.

Intelligent Homestar Runner

Homestar Runner often does stupid things, so many that it's nearly impossible to list them all. However, Homestar's stupidity occasionally becomes so deep that it flips back to smart, and Homestar can demonstrate an unusual amount of intelligence or self-awareness.

Appearances

  • Email the bet — Homestar makes a bet with Strong Bad that he is cool, and demonstrates by wearing a pair of sunglasses and saying "'sup?". This is sufficient to impress Strong Bad and win the bet, so Homestar continues the behavior, much to the irritation of Marzipan.
  • Email stupid stuff — Homestar outsmarts Strong Bad by pretending to be dumb, using reverse psychology to make Strong Bad say something stupid, winning Grumblecakes from Kevin Grumbles.
  • Happy Fireworks — Homestar (as Cardboard Marzipan) corrects himself about the name of the holiday.
  • No Hands On Deck! — As Cardboard Marzipan, Homestar "admits" that his constant talking about using galvanized nails is meant to cover up the fact that he doesn't know how to build a deck.
  • Email strong badathlon — Homestar is the reigning champion in the Homestar-Runner-Crud-Out-Of-Beating event, because he has intimate knowledge of his own weak points.
  • Email 4 branches — When Strong Sad asks Homestar for the solution for a simple math equation, Homestar recites Coulomb's Law. Strong Sad still complains that Homestar is incorrect.
  • Strong Badia The Free — Homestar insists on staying at Marzipan's house because he knows there is a squirrel in his attic that he sometimes thinks is a spooky ghost.
  • Kick-A-Ball — Homestar's team wins the game because Homestar had used a deceptive tactic that he is aware Strong Bad had made legal earlier.
  • Pumpkin Stencils — Homestar invents "Paper Crumble Man" to prove that he can makes things up on the spot like Sterrance. While pretending to be Paper Crumple Man, he stupidly catches himself in a paradox and responds "This is an existential experience."
  • Haunted Photo Booth — Homestar at first incorrectly identifies his costume as Mark Lemke. He then angrily corrects himself by correctly identifying his costume as Dale Murphy.
