Welcome, Emiga!

Welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! We're glad to have you as a member. If you need any help, feel free to ask me, or anyone else on the welcoming committee. You can also post questions on the FAQ talk page.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the help page, and the FAQ.
  • If this is the first wiki you've been on, you might want to look at the editing help page, or the more complete MediaWiki Users' Guide.
  • Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our wiki standards.
  • When you leave a message on a talk page, sign it by typing ~~~~ after it. That'll automagically put your username and the time.
  • Read up on the rules and guidelines for your user space.
  • If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to The Stick.
  • To practice editing, go over to the sandbox.
  • If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum, or if you're feeling creative, you can register at the Fanstuff wiki.
  • If you see an update on homestarrunner.com that isn't listed on the Main Page, put it up here.
  • Above all, be sure to be bold and have fun!

Feel free to delete this message when you're done reading it. (In general, it's considered poor etiquette to remove others' comments from your talk page, but this message is just here to be helpful. It's fine to remove it once you don't need it.) I hope this information is helpful, and that you'll have a good experience contributing to our knowledge-base and our community.

Sincerely,
phlip, and the Homestar Runner Wiki Welcoming Committee, 02:35, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Show preview/useless edits

Hello Emiga, I see that you have made several consecutive edits to the same page. I want to point out the Show Preview button. It's right next to the Save Page button when you edit. You should use it whenever you are making a lot of experimental edits, for example when you are trying to get formatting right. Using the Show Preview button is quicker and easier than saving and clicking "edit" again, and will keep recent changes and page histories from being flooded. In addition, quite a few of your recent changes have been reverted. Please think carefully about whether to change something or not. Remember, be bold, but know when not to be also. Thanks for your consideration, DeFender1031 16:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

This is the second time I'm writing. Please stop making useless edits, they will just be reverted. If you are unsure as to whether an edit is worthwhile or not, please feel free to discuss it on the article's talk page. You can also look here for more information as to what to add. We appreciate your contributions, and hope you will make useful ones in the future. DeFender1031 16:31, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

How is a picture useless??? And even if it is, you don't have to delort it! Anyway, you told me not to overflow the history, but deleting it causes an extra entry on the history. I'm just trying my best, anyways, I thought it was useful for the entry on head bad's voice.

Get off my case, Emiga 20:14, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

You misunderstand me. I'm not trying to get on your case, I'm trying to help you develop proper wiki etiquette. I was pretty sure that the pic was a double (I happened to be wrong, and I apologize), and when you added it to the page, it took up the entire width, and did not look good at all, as you weren't using the "thumb" tag correctly. (had you used "show preview, we could have avoided that problem.) In addition, pictures are rarely necessary in the middle of a page like that, the exeption being for close ups of glitches or easter eggs or the like. As for the "extra entry in the history" you mentioned, new edits, and therefore new history entries, are fine. It is perfectly acceptable to make a new edit. The problem is when you start seeing the same person editing the same page 5 times in the space of 2 minutes because the link they added was broken and they didn't preview first. I will admit I was being a bit harsh on you after seeing like 3 or 4 edits that clearly did need reverting, and probably would not have gone nova on the pic like that if it were someone else. For that, you have my sincerest apologies. I really do understand that you are trying your best, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we really appreciate it. I will try to lighten up on you in the future, as long as you try to start using the "show preview" button more often. (Personally, I use that button before posting anything I do aside from a revert or minor grammatical or spelling change. Better to take the extra 2 seconds to check than flood recent changes and have to fix it anyway.) Hoping we can put this behind us and become friends, DeFender1031 21:51, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Emiga: you're doing fine. You're making good-faith edits to the wiki, and it's okay if not everything you do is perfect. As DeFender said, your contributions are appreciated. DeFender: some of your suggestions are good, but don't bite the newcomers! It takes a little while to get used to the way things work around here. Trey56 22:06, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Trey, I agree. I didn't mean to bite the newcomer, and I have already apologized for it. I am less concerned about the useless edits (as you said, they are in good faith) as I am about the lack of "show preview" use. I probably shouldn't have gotten on his case at all about the content of the edits, as he was in fact trying to help. But I still stress the importance of previewing before saving. DeFender1031 22:10, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm kind of sorry too for overreacting to what you said. I apologize also. I guess I was just trying to hard to help, and missed a few mistakes. It's not all your fault, partly mine. And from now on, I will try to make sure my additions are well thought-out Emiga 22:17, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Emiga man, it's all good (you should have seen some of my stupid early edits, yours don't even come close. Lucky for me I used to edit anonomously at the time so they aren't listed on my contribs.) Feel free to ask me for help or advice if you need it, I am always happy to help. You can find me on the IRC channel in addition to on here most of the time. My nicks are listed on my user page.
