Leaving

Are you okay Sam? --TheYellowDart(t/c) 19:58, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Nobody is mad at you. Hey, we all have a past. Heck, look at mine. I got blocked before. But that's behind me now. It's alright. --TheYellowDart(t/c) 20:04, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Don't leave! Mr. 567 20:02, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Sam, I don't know why you are leaving but you shouldn't go. If you could not help, just keep trying. If you did something bad, it's ok. We don't want you to leave. You welcomed me to the wiki. If you want to leave it's ok. We'll miss you.--ONESTOP 20:20, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Sam, I'm sorry to hear that you've chosen to leave. I think you've done a lot of good work on our articles during the time you spent here. I understand that you've chosen to leave because of a recent conflict regarding a post on a new user's talk page. Please don't feel bad about that; I think you have a lot of potential, and I've seen quite a bit of improvement in the quality of your talk page posts during your time on the wiki.
I understand your decision to leave, and if you're feeling strained by things in real life (your parents, etc.), as you mentioned, then taking a break might be a good thing. I just want to let you know that you're welcome to return at any time, and I'm free to discuss anything you want about the reason you left.
Take care, Trey56 20:13, 16 Dismember 2007 (UTC)

Wait a Sec, You ain't leaving the fanstuff are ya? Sephiroth 20:27, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, I wonder how many times you'll say you are leaving this wiki! But, you misspelled "however" on your userpage, you're gonna have to be blocked for that :P Have a good rest of the year. See you when you get back,

Wait, BLOCKED? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 23:08, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
That was a joke, as shown by me putting a :P after what I said. And if you already know that, never mind it. Homestar-Winner (talk) 23:50, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
If we blocked people for misspelling things on userpages, who would be left here? ;-) Anyway, Sam, have a good break, and I hope you'll come back refreshed. Heimstern Läufer 00:55, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
I'm gonna miss your butt dance sig!:p see ya when you come back!--Geoblu2 04:56, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh, Sam the Man, I pine for you! We sure had some great times, bro. In memoriam. -DAGRON 05:10, 17 December 2007 (UTC). (Oh, wait, you're not dead. Good. I thought they got you with a stake through the heart. Have a good break.)

Saved a copy

Incase you don't want to leave, I saved a copy of your page when it was your birthday. I went into the history then edit and copied everything. We are going to miss you.--ONESTOP 20:29, 16 December 2007 (UTC) : (

That's ok, but the history will never go away, ever. The Goblin!! 21:00, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Subpages for deletion

Hey Sam. I noticed you left three pages marked for deletion when you decided to take a break. Did you really mean for those to be deleted, or did you just forget to untag them? If you'd still like them deleted, just say so here, otherwise just untag them. Thanks! — It's dot com 00:32, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Opps. That's just me in anger. Save them. I'm off to Burmuda now! (Not really. Enjoying my wikibreak). User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 01:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
Okay. Don't forget that you need to take the deletion tags off in that case. — It's dot com 01:24, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Concerning Justin

Hi, Sam, there are still some things we need to work on when dealing with newer users. Here you are improving in writing your messages, but you still need to polish it up. For example, "you making way to many subpages" has two problems: first, it needs to be "you are making way too many". (There are also other parts that need proofreading that I won't discuss.) Second, the problem isn't really that he's making too many subpages; it's that the subpages do not comply with our policy. It would have been best to link to our policy, like this.

Also, when Justin became disruptive (and yes, he was disruptive, you are right about that), you began to use some alarmed-sounding language, like the edit summaries here and here. This is a bad idea because it tends to make the situation worse: it does the opposite of calming the person down. It also was a bad idea to edit war with OptimisticFool over his userpage. If you disagree with someone else about what's acceptable on a userpage, ask a sysop to intervene.

I say this not to be overly critical, but because we do still need to present a professional, tactful and calm voice to our new users, even if they're disruptive. Therefore, please read the messages you write to users carefully and make sure they're clear and grammatically correct. And if they become disruptive, be calm in return (if you have a hard time with this, consider just waiting it out until someone else deals with the situation). Keep these in mind, and you should be on the road to doing better. Deal? Deal. OK, keep on tranglin'! Heimstern Läufer 03:01, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Also very important: if you suspect that a user is a sock, please do not ever post that suspicion on the user's talk page. If turns out that you're wrong and it's just a new user, one of the first things that new user will see is that accusation. Instead, ask a sysop to deal with it. My talk page is always open for this. Thanks. Heimstern Läufer 20:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Last warning?

I'm kind of curious how you're going to back up the "last warning" you gave Justin. Last I checked you don't have access to the block feature. In other words, leave messages if you have to, but leave "last" warnings to the sysops. — It's dot com 23:09, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Reply to your deleted comments

I'm sorry, Sam, we know you are trying to helpful. But unfortunately, you aren't succeeding. You say you're not trying to start fights, and I believe you. Nonetheless, fights do start when you talk to new users often enough that we have no choice but to restrict you on this. We've tried to give you advice several times, but it doesn't seem to be sinking in.

I know you are trying to be helpful, and I would encourage you to be helpful in some other way, as It's dot com has said above. You could also take advantage of his offer of help on IRC (I can probably help out with this, too, if you'd like.)

We don't want to discourage you from contributing, but we can't have the disruption that results from your interaction with new users any longer, even if it's not intentional. I'm sorry. Heimstern Läufer 20:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Sam, I really don't understand what you are doing, recently. You have been asked several times not to do this anymore. Can it really be so hard to stay away from edits of this kind and simply contribute to the wiki? Also, that edit summary was way out of order after what It's dot com and Heimstern asked you. As Heimstern said, this behaviour is disruptive to the wiki, and you're not helping anybody. Please stop it right now. In addition to this, threatening to vandalize is not acceptable, and you know it. Maybe it really is a good idea for you to take a break and cool down a little. When you come back, please have another read of our comments on your talk page, and check out your old edits. Maybe with a clear head, you'll see what went wrong. See you then, Loafing 21:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Test notices

Just for the future, there is a template you can use when giving someone a test notice, Template:Test. This will make it a bit easer since you won't have to type that stuff up all by yourself. Homestar-Winner (talk) 23:53, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Here's the link to the wiki's carefully worded template: {{test}}. It has simple instructions for use (don't forget to use subst:) and I've used it myself several times. Enjoy! --Stux 00:39, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
I know. I was in a rush to my school bus and I had to make one really quickly. But, I knew that template existed. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 00:41, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
OK. Now that I think about it, I probably have seen you use it before. Over and out, Homestar-Winner (talk) 00:44, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Well for important notices like these it's always good to err on the side of caution. See ya later. --Stux 00:45, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
If you're in a rush, then don't put up notices on users' talk pages. Simple as that. What's the harm in letting another user do that? It's certainly better than leaving messages that are not up to standard - especially when you know that you're not doing it properly. You have been asked before not to police other users for a while, and my advice for you is to always make sure you're doing it absolutely correct when you're about to post something on a talk page. If you're unsure whether you follow our policies and guidelines, don't post. If you know you're not doing it properly, don't post. There's always next time. And it's a wiki, so don't stress, someone else will do the job if you don't. Loafing 00:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Policing

Sam, please remember that you aren't supposed to be policing the wiki. Something like this counts as policing. If you see something like this that needs attention, let a sysop know rather than handling it yourself. Thanks. Heimstern Läufer 21:02, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Talk Page Posts

See HRWiki:Talk page etiquette#General - while it's not best practice, one is well in their rights to remove posts from their talk page. The only possible exception to this would be an official message on behalf of admins, and even there it's a grey area. Reverting that with impunity would just result in a quickening of the eventual consequence (likely a ban) anyway. As much as I agree with your post and the sentiment behind it, and as much as I agree that he should let it stand, he's entitled to not have it there if he chooses. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 16:00, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Sam, you're once again policing the wiki by trying to make Coach B keep that message on his page. And once again, your policing proved disruptive. Please stop. Heimstern Läufer 17:54, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Careless reverting

Sam the Man: This is ridiculous. (I am also leaving the same message to SamFisher1022 and DeFender1031.) As established editors I believe you handled poorly the welcoming of this user. Instead of providing a more welcoming and inviting message, you have a quick edit war of sorts in someone else's user talk page. Imagine how a new user would feel seeing this kind of mysterious edit summary arguments going on. This sort of behavior could easily turn away prospective editors (good or not so much). I think in general we've established a bad habit of quick reverts with a simple edit summary and no explanation. Friendly but informative notices to less established users should be the norm, not the exception. --Stux 20:08, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Sam, this edit summary is quite insensitive to a user who was clearly trying to help the wiki, albeit misguidedly. Please remember how it was when you were a new user and write the sort of edit summaries you would have wanted to see then. Heimstern Läufer 01:15, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Positive Interaction

Hey, Sam The Man. It's that guy Qermaq. I see from previous posts that some are critical of your interactions here. I can't disagree with them, sometimes you approach is gruff, but I can see your intent is good in faith. Allow me to be a resource to you.

On my user page, I have a section which gets into positive behavior and attitude here. I encourage you to give that a read. Also, take a look at this, a concept I fail at still, time to time. And feel free to contact me via my user talk or elsewhere if you ever have a question. I know you intend to be a smart user at heart, and I extend my advice and experience to you. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 00:35, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you Qermaq. I try to be helpful, but I just can't find out. I know I'll never be a sysop here (I was blocked), so I try to act at least a little bit. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 21:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
If you ever have a question about something, you can put it on my talk page. Either I or someone will respond when we can. And being a sysop isn't all it's cracked up to be, after all - all you get is a few extra buttons and doohickies, but they don't get any more real power here than you or I could attain. Power here comes from good editing, contribution, and being considerate and reasonable, not from being able to block or delete. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 22:04, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Power to the contributors! Anyways, thanks again. How needs to be a sysop anyway? User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 22:12, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Overstepping your authority again

Hello Sam. We've been trying to give you a little more latitude with regard to interacting with users (even new users), but we must remind you that you are not the wiki's policeman, and it is not your place to edit another user's user page to remove a "users who suck" list, regardless of whether that list is inappropriate. If you have a problem with the content of someone's user page, you should put a note on their talk page or, better yet, discuss it with a sysop. Sysops are available almost all the time on IRC, and I remind you that several of us have specifically offered to assist you in deciding how to handle situations just like these. — It's dot com 23:57, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

It seems common practice here to only edit a userpage when there is, say, a coding error the user cannot repair, and even then it's best to get the user's consent on Talk before proceeding. User page editing for policy reasons is best left to those holding the keys, in order that any repercussions are in clear view of those who can block and delete pages as appropriate. If you, or I, take actions which might enrage a user, the resulting reaction might require a sysop's presence to quickly resolve, so it's best to have them on board and aware. User pages are the one thing a user has nearly entire control over, and I think that we all should respect that, even if the user puts up something inappropriate. Give them the chance to remediate on their own, and be sure a sysop is aware before any intrusive action is taken. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 03:14, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Refining the approach

Regading this: the intent was not bad, but the phrasing was. While we want talk contributors to use good communication skills, there's no policy stating that, and frankly we shouldn't say "you need to remember capitalizing the Letter "I"." That sounds like you're a grammarian telling others what to do.

An alternate approach is to tell them that you enjoy their posts, but would find it easier to read them if they'd be more careful with caps. What does this do that is different? It puts "fault" on yourself, not the other user. He's empowered to help you. Can you see how that helps the other guy not feel like he's being told what to do, and is instead feeling urged to do something that helps everyone?

Also, whenever you are letting a user know he "needs" to do something differently, it's a good idea to link to an example so it's clear what the issue was. Often just seeing an old edit again makes the gaffe clear enough. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 17:58, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Policing again

Sam, we've told you several times now that you are not to police the wiki, yet today you wrote this. Enough is enough, Sam. You need to stop doing this. If you keep it up, we may have no choice but to block you to stop this.

As It's dot com and I (and possibly others) have told you several times, you are more than welcome to contact a sysop to ask for help if there is a problem. Please take advantage of this. You may yet be able to learn how to do this right if you do so, and then we won't have to be here anymore. Heimstern Läufer 00:51, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Are you kidding me! I'm helping the wiki! Can't you respect that! User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 01:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
It's not helping. It's disruptive. New users often start out by making too many pages (I believe you did so yourself when you were new). Getting annoyed with them and showing it on the talk page does not help and is completely against the wiki spirit. Heimstern Läufer 01:29, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Then the wiki spirit needs a makeover. Too many pages are bad. User talk:Sam the Man Sam the Man 01:32, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
No, I don't agree. Yes, bad pages ought not to be made, but new users will do this. I will say you started well, linking to the guidelines was very helpful and your tone was respectful. But there was no point for a further post from you. You did your part. If the issue continues (as it did), allow other voices to try. He either wasn't listening to yours, or was not listening to anyone, but it was clear you needed to step away and allow someone else to try a different approach. So you get Not Last Place. Ding! Edit Summaries

Hey, S-to-the-M. I'ma thinking you need to pause before changing or reverting, and ask yourself one question - how will the user feel if (s)he reads this edit summary? Will they feel like their efforts are unwelcome? Will they think the wiki is out to get them? I've told you, power is not really with the number of special functions you can operate, or the number of templates you can memorize, or the number of usertypes after your name at Special:Listusers. It's in how you interrelate with others. With a newer user, you walk into the relationship with power. Please don't use that power for any end but good, or for awesome. Best Interests

hey there sam, do you really think that this edit is in the best interest of the wiki? Reverting once is fine, but i think it's pretty obvious that he did hear you, and put it back anyway. I can see this leading to another flame war, and that certainly wouldn't be in the best interest of the wiki. Just leave it alone and let the ops deal with it if he puts it back again. — Defender1031*Talk 14:31, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

A reminder also that this counts as policing. Please stop. Like Defender said, just let a sysop decline it. On a more positive note, thanks for making the FA writeup. Heimstern Läufer 15:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Is it time for a talk post? Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 14:39, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Umm, Qermaq, look up one section... — Defender1031*Talk 14:39, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Just noticed myself. Moving to talk concerning his... concerns... is the best route. Qermaq - (T/C) Image:Qermaqsigpic.png 14:41, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
