[edit] Welcome Snowball821!

My name is Dacheatbot and welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! We're glad to have you as a member. If you need any help, feel free to ask anyone on the welcoming committee. You can also post questions on the FAQ talk page.

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the help page.
  • Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our wiki standards.
  • Read up on the rules and guidelines for your user space.
  • If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to The Stick.
  • To practice editing, go over to the sandbox.
  • When you post a comment on a talk page you should sign it: just type 3 ~s to get a sig, 4 ~s to get your sig and time, and 5 ~s to just get the time. So 3 ~s = Snowball821, 4 ~s = Snowball821 08:11, 19 April 2024 (UTC), and 5 ~s = 08:11, 19 April 2024 (UTC).
  • If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum.
  • I strongly sugguest visting The Chat Channel, It's a great place to come and chat and get quick answers to your questions.
  • If you have a problem I cannot answer or help with (like a troll or vandal), there is a sysop or administrator that most likely can.
  • If you need help not on the Help page, leave a note on my talk page
  • Above all, be sure to be bold (and maybe italic...(maybe both!)) and have fun!

Feel free to delete this message when you're done reading it. After all, your user space belongs to you. I hope this information is helpful, and that you'll have a good experience contributing to our knowledge-base and our community.

Sincerely,
--Dacheatbot · Communicate, and "The Homestar Runner Wiki Welcoming Committee" 14:34, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Spamonymity

Hey Austin! I'm glad you've become an addition to the wiki. What I'm about to say falls into the category of things-that-aren't-really-a-big-deal-from-the-wiki's-point-of-view, but-I-just-wanted-to-give-you-some-advice. Purely up to you.

I know some people feel differently about how much personal information they want on the internet, but you might think about having less here. Right now you have your picture, full name, email, IM, age, and state of residence. That means if for some reason somebody knew your name but didn't know what you looked like... now they would. (Or vice versa.) But actually the most immediate concern is not scary people finding you in real life—although that's a big deal, it's not guaranteed to happen. What I can guarantee is that, with your email displayed the way it is now, you will start getting spam within a matter of weeks, and will get more and more until we're talking about hundreds of messages a day. And that's an absolutely ironclad guarantee. (Basically, if your address appears anywhere on the internet with "@" visible in the source code, you'll get on the lists.) Fortunately, the wiki has a built-in way to let people email you without making your address visible. (There's also a way to mask it on other websites.) Back in May I wrote about it on someone else's user page; so I don't say the same things again, I recommend you read about it there.

And again, welcome to the wiki! —AbdiViklas 18:28, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
