Transcript

{Also sprach Zarathustra plays. The text "Hey" appears onscreen. It fades away, and "Did you miss us?" appears. The text fades and the music intensifies. "Let's" fades in, and "do this..." fades through it. The text "W00tstock 5.0" appears. The screen fades to a red fez, and zooms out to reveal Strong Bad. "Please welcome" and "Strong Bad" appear over his head. The music finishes. As Strong Bad speaks, he is not animated.}

STRONG BAD: Hello, my name is Strong Bad, and I'm from 2002. Ask your parents. They asked me to come out here and introduce you to W-Zero-Zero-t-stock to lay down some ground rules to keep you nerds in line. First of all, I would like every male wearing a fedora to punch themself in the face. Those things were never cool and never looked good on you. Thank you. Uh, also a notice to all of you steampunk people out there. Uh, look, I really appreciate all the time and craftsmanship that goes into those costumes, and those cool ray guns you've got, but look. There's a lot of machines missing gears out there right now. Poor, defenseless machines with no gears. For Pete's sake, put 'em back, steampunkers. All right, now, Browncoats, in the crowd, where my Browncoats at? Oh, Browncoats, that's right, listen up. Your Firebug show is never ever coming back. Just calm down. Pretty sure that show Castle is the spiritual sequel. Oh yeah, this one isn't so much a rule as it is a question: can anybody explain Homestuck to me?

{Homestar appears onscreen, also wearing a Fez. He is likewise not animated while speaking.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Hey, Strong Bad, watcha doing?

STRONG BAD: Shut up, I'm just talking to the nerds here.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Ooh, I'm a nerd. Check me out, I've even got my smartphone.

STRONG BAD: You don't have any — there's nothing smart about you! What kind of smartphone do you have?

HOMESTAR RUNNER: I've got... a Palm Pilot and... a BlackBerry and... a Zuuuuune... player. I've got Goo-gull Glass.

STRONG BAD: All right, go away Homestuck.

HOMESTAR RUNNER: Okay, bye!

{Homestar disappears.}

STRONG BAD: All right, we should probably let them get the show started. So, without further adieu, ladies, gentlemen, geeks, nerds, Fetts (both Jango and Boba), slave Leias, cinnamon bun Leias, Hoth Leias, Bespin Leias, brick layas...

{Homestar appears onscreen.}

HOMESTAR RUNNER: I like Lobot.

{Homestar disappears.}

STRONG BAD: Please give it up for the man who apparently Tweets with each beat of his heart! {The words "Wil Wheaton" appear.} Hwil Hweaton!

{Screen fades to black}

STRONG BAD: Everybody get your wheat on!

{Wil Wheaton enters.}

Fun Facts

"Those things were never cool and never looked good on you."

Explanations

  • w00tstock is a live variety show created by Adam Savage, Wil Wheaton, and Paul and Storm of Da Vinci's Notebook.
  • Steampunk is a science-fiction subgenre based on alternate 19th century history with retro-futuristic technology. It is popular in nerd circles.
  • Fedoras are hats with a pinched crown. While they were briefly popular with hipsters in the naughts, they quickly fell out of favor and are now seen as a joke among most nerds.
  • "Firebug" is a reference to the TV show Firefly (whose fans are called Browncoats). It was very popular among fans and critics, but its audience was meager and thus the show was canceled after only one season. Strong Bad goes on to say that Castle succeeded it in spirit since Nathan Fillion starred in both shows.
  • Homestuck refers to the popular webcomic by the same name created by Andrew Hussie. Upon its rise in popularity, when people talked about it, some others thought they were discussing Homestar Runner and became confused, likely because of the similarity in names.

Trivia

Remarks

  • Palm Pilots were referenced previously in the bird, where Strong Bad used Pom Pom's Pom Pilot to check an email.
  • While Palm products continued to be sold until 2011, the Palm Pilot was released in 1997, making it extremely outdated compared to the other devices he lists. Technically, the Palm Pilot is actually a PDA. Similarly, the Zune is a media player, hence Homestar's brief addendum of the word "player" to the device's name.

Goofs

  • Strong Bad's left hand is slightly cropped.
  • When Homestar is on-screen, a piece of Strong Bad's eye and the tassel in his fez are missing.

Inside References

Real-World References

  • Strong Bad asks if anyone can explain Homestuck. This is a common joke amongst its fans, due to the webcomic's bizarre and complex nature rendering it infamously difficult to explain.
  • Homestar claims to own a BlackBerry, a Palm Pilot, a Zune, and Google Glass.
  • There were several references to Star Wars:
    • Strong Bad refers to Jango Fett and his "son", Boba.
    • Strong Bad refers to the many costumes of Princess Leia.
    • Homestar references Lobot, a fan-favorite character of the franchise.
  • Mispronouncing Wil Wheaton as "Hwil Hweaton" is a joke from the episode "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven" of Family Guy (which itself was a takeoff on the same joke made about "Cool Hwip" in the earlier episode "Barely Legal").
