I wanted to extend a personal welcome, since I believe strongly that a [[Wikipedia:Wiki|Wiki]] should be a democratic and non-threatening place where everyone feels like they can contribute. Normally, if you make your sig look like this: 
Something
it will automatically be converted to 
[[User:YourName|Something]]
By checking that box, you're removing the extras and making your sig just 
Something
Now, if that Something happens to contain a link, like say 
{{User:MyName/sig}}
You want it to look like that instead of 
[[User:YourName|{{User:MyName/sig}}]]

Re: this edit - the wiki automatically adds rel="nofollow" to all external links - Google (and other search engines and web-crawlers) take this to mean "ignore this link". It's so that spammers who edit pages and add hundreds of links to various pages don't get any bump in search ratings. If you want to do that, you'll have to take it elsewhere.
