Hey there, every peoples. We are trying to recover from our recent vandalism attack as quickly as possible, and you can help!
An Internet proxy enables someone to appear to be from an IP address without revealing what their real address is. If someone has access to many proxies, he or she can seem to be from dozens, hundreds, or thousands of IPs. Most recently, the NSMC vandal has exploited this loophole to effect massive damage to not only our wiki here, but many others. In order to close the loophole, we are going to block as many of these proxies as we can. We have identified several specific IPs that we know are proxies, but it's also possible that entire ranges of IPs need to be blocked. We do not, however, want to block any more IP addresses than absolutely necessary, so a little investigative work is in order. That's where you come in.
We need to research all the IP addresses listed on the subpages listed below and determine the lower and upper bound of the IP range. There are way too many for one person to look up alone, but all of us together can knock it out pretty quickly. (By the way, the final decision on whether or not to block ranges has not been made, but we would certainly like to have the option.)
How to help
On the subpages below you will see many sections with links like this:
- Edit the section you plan to research and put {{inprogress}} at the top. Copy the table in the section and paste it in a text editor, like Notepad. Save the page. That way we can avoid duplication of work.
- Click on each link in the section, one at a time, and it will open a page similar to the one pictured at the right.
- Copy the IP ranges to your clipboard. In the example image, there is a general range and a more specific range. The specific range is the one we need. It is shown here circled in red in the upper image.
- Using the table below as a guide, paste the information into each line of the table in your text editor.
- Go to the netmask calculator.
- Enter the lower address into the first field, and the upper address into the second field, and then press Submit.
- The netmask is the IP address followed by a slash and a number. It is shown here circled in red in the lower image. Copy and paste the resulting netmask into the last column of the table in your text editor.
- Repeat for each IP in the section.
- Once you have the section complete, edit the project subpage again, and paste the table in the right place.
- Change the notice in the section from {{inprogress}} to {{done}}.
You don't have to do a lot. If you could help with just one section, we'd be that much closer. Thank you in advance for your efforts.
