Welcome!

Welcome to the Homestar Runner Wiki! I wanted to extend a personal welcome, since I believe strongly that a Wiki should be a democratic and non-threatening place where everyone feels like they can contribute. Unfortunately it can be very frustrating at first if you make changes that are ignored or changed back by other users, but if so I encourage you to hang in there; as you get a feel for the way things are done around here you'll feel more at home. That was my experience, anyway!

If you need any help, feel free to ask anyone on the welcoming committee (like me!). You can also post questions on the FAQ talk page.

Here are some tips to get you started:

• If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the help page.
• Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our wiki standards.
• Read up on the rules and guidelines for your user page. What you're reading right now, by the way, is the "Talk:" page that goes with your user page. It's a good way to communicate directly with specific users. The best way to respond, though, is on the same user page where the conversation was started. E.g. if you have a question, go to my user talk page and edit it, then watch my page (via Recent changes) for a response.
• If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to The Stick.
• If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our forum and get More Community Interaction Than You Or Your Grandmother Can Handle!
• Above all, be bold and have fun!

The bird

Dot com: So I understand this, what are the rules for STUFF'ing an item, then? I've been told/encouraged repeatedly to STUFF fun-facts, so I think it's a little odd that when I finally did STUFF one that seemed significant, I was told not to. Can you clarify this? Fun facts are listed on toons. You don't see them so much on articles. Notice that the heading for the section where this goes is called References, not Fun Facts. For articles, we try to keep all of the discussion on the talk page. There is a little bit of overlap, and you possibly could have STUFF'd this if you'd gotten to it first... but since there is already an ongoing discussion, that is where you should voice your opinion. Congrats to Bubsty

Just wanted to leave a quick note in my own Talk congratulating Bubsty on a valiant effort to battle the trollbots we experienced earlier today. I tried to help as well, but I was only able to affect about 5 or 6 pages before the site went down completely. (Plus, I had to do actual work, too.)

Defender of the Wiki

Even in the midst of the blitzkreig of trollbotting on the night of November 11, 2005, KieferSkunk had his wits about him. Splitting the nicknames

I did. I stated that I was just helping another user who had started this process. I've stopped, and I don't mind if you revert my changes. (I'll redo the links in Homestar's section again if necessary.) - KieferSkunk 23:02, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I see now that you were just following Invisible Robot Fish's example. I think the splitting makes the page harder to read, but that's my opinion. — It's dot com 23:04, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Signature testing

Okay, I just wrote my new signature, and I thought I read that it was supposed to be a retroactive change (if I make changes to the sig and I have a properly formatted sig line elsewhere in the wiki), but I'm not seeing that behavior. —  KieferSkunk (talk) — 00:35, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

See, now THAT'S how it's supposed to look, right there. But take a look at STUFF/space program - my sig in the "Hap Arnold" STUFF isn't formatted the same way, even though I am using the correct sig line. Why's that? —  KieferSkunk (talk) —

Yeah, I was writing this at the same time you wrote that. So anyway, what I was going to say (this may still come in handy) was:

Well, I would first correct the recent changes patrol link (It's HRWiki:Recent changes patrol). Then... I think I know what you did. Before you can do the cool ~~~ (tilde shortcuts), you have to go to your preferances.

Now, where it says Nickname:_________, type in {{User:KieferSkunk/sig}}.

Now, below, where theres a box where, next to it, it says Raw Signatures (with out automatic link). Check that box. Now the whole ~~~~~~~~ thing will work! — _talk Bubsty _edits 00:45, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

I had done that - followed all the steps, though I had to redo them a couple of times. But even when everything was setup right, my sig was still showing up un-bolded (that was a change I made after getting the template to work correctly). Your signature page doesn't automatically update itself until someone makes an edit on the page where it is. The reason it fixed itself is because someone else voted on that STUFF item, and when it saved the page it used the new, bolded version of the sig. — It's dot com 01:13, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
