Radio Interviews

Hey there Aurora, I was just curious about the transcript you made for the radio interview. Are radio interviews fair game as far as transcripts go, or did you have to ask the people for permission? I'm not much of the legal fellow, so I was just wondering. Thanks, Thunderbird 16:27, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Beats me.... that particular sound clip didn't even come with a website attached to it. I don't have time to deal with that right now, so if someone else wants to take it down and contact the radio station, then that would be fine... Aurora the Homestar Coder 20:32, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Siggie

Hi Aurora. I just thought I'd pass a bit of Joey Day wisdom on to you about sigs. (I've been going through most the sysops slowly) Have you tried the template sig meathod? Basically it lets you shorten your code left behind, and lets you change ALL your sigs at the same time. You just put your sig code on a subpage of your userpage, (e.g. 'User:Homestar Coder/sig' or something). Then in your prefferances box, put {{User:Homestar Coder/sig}} as your signature. And that's all there is to it. After that, if you ever change your sig on your subpage, it'll change all of the ones you've put since you started it. It sure changed my life. spread the word! Thunderbird 21:47, 21 May 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, I was going to do that... I'm lazy... Aurora the Homestar Coder 06:21, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

Cleanup template

From Experimental Film :Thanks for the heads up on when to use this. I'll leave it alone unless a page is in big trouble (but with all y'all around, does that ever happen?) S Gleason 14:24, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

the right STUFF

Hey Aurora (or is it Amanda?), it's Dot com. I'm wanting to move forward with the new STUFF stuff, and to help rally the wiki community around my idea, I'd like to set up a STUFF sandbox so we can practice the new format and get used to it. For that, though, I need to set up some styles on the master style sheet page. Something like:

{code deleted}

Not being an admin, I can't do it myself. Can you help me with this, or do I need to take it to Joey? Thanks. — It's dot com 03:47, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I think I could edit that page, but I think you should ask Joey about it first. Aurora the Homestar Coder 03:53, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Cool. — It's dot com
Hold off on this for a bit. -- Tom 05:25, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Um, what do you mean? I've already written to Joey. — It's dot com 05:44, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
He must mean hold off on the Stuff reform. *sigh* Aurora the Homestar Coder 06:42, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Or maybe he was going to go ahead and make the CSS changes for me (looking at the monobook page history, I see now that he is the only other person besides Joey to ever edit it). Which is it, Tom? Keep in mind, I'm not about to make any drastic changes to the wiki—I'm just getting my ducks in a row to make a practice page in order to propose changes to the wiki. — It's dot com 06:51, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)</s>

Aurora, I've gotten another idea, and I think it's better than this. Let me see if I can make it work, and I'll get back to you. — It's dot com 18:38, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

K. Aurora the Homestar Coder 20:24, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

At last, the format is ready for rigorous public testing. Come on down and give it a spin. — It's dot com 08:42, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Pretty cool! Great jorb! I was wondering why the test is using made-up Stuff'd facts rather than the real ones. Won't people be confused if they don't understand we're testing a new stuff system and see that some obvious facts got stuffed? Aurora the Homestar Coder 15:05, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
That's a good point, but I think that testing with live pages would be even more confusing. Casual readers of the wiki don't see the recent changes page, just the articles. — It's dot com 15:56, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't see that they were "test japanese cartoon" etc. OK, my concern is retracted. Aurora the Homestar Coder 16:16, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Marzipan's skeleton

Why did you revert my edit regarding Marzipan's skeleton on That a Ghost? —Shawn81 13:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Because we generally omit any fun facts that come from viewing the Flash file. If we accepted everything that came from viewing the Flash file as canon, then we'd have to say that characters frequenly lose limbs and appear out of nowhere. Aurora the Homestar Coder 14:27, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Good point. Nevertheless, I think that this fun fact is important because it helps to further elucidate Marzipan's unusual anatomy. Is there an alternate location that I should mention this? —Shawn81 21:52, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
One thing I rarely agree with Aurora on is the treatment of .swf files. While it is true that we should not mention objects that DON'T appear outside the frame, like, say, missing limbs, objects that DO appear outside the frame but DON'T appear inside are generally noteworthy IMHO. Anyway, lemme check this out. --Jay (Gobble) 21:59, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Your comment on the That A Ghost page was "you can see even more of it [Marzipan's skeleton] if you view the Flash file and make the window tall and skinny". I don't think this adds anything, because there's not even a description of what you can see. I looked at it, and all that's there is a few "bones" that make the bottom of her dress, just like the ones that make up The Strong Bad's and The Homestar Runner's shoes. I don't find that very noteworthy in this case. — It's dot com 22:49, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
It just bothers me when we're picking apart stuff that TBC never really intended us to see (except, perhaps, for "Homestache Runner", but this toon was made far before that). Maybe they left stuff like the rest of Marzipan's skeleton out of frame because they were dissatisfied with how it looked and wouldn't want it to be considered canon. Aurora the Homestar Coder 22:39, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I don't think this is a question of canon. I think that when they built Marzipan's skeleton, they built the whole thing without worrying what would be in and out of frame, and then when they put the toon together, part of it just happened to be below the black. But since it's only barely cut off, I don't think the additional wording above does anything to make the article more complete. — It's dot com 22:49, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to respond. Yeah, looking at it, there's not very much that's cut off in this case and the fact stands without needing to mention the .swf. --Jay (Gobble) 22:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I guess you guys are right. Still, there are a few bones that you don't see inside the frame. However, they are not much, and they don't really add anything to the fact that "Marzipan's skirt has bones". —Shawn81 02:46, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Okay, I guess this got resolved. Aurora the Homestar Coder 03:12, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"This stuff is really getting old."

You said something to that effect on the STUFF page and I would like to nominate you forGOD for making that comment.

On the other hand, if people stopped being gigantic jerks to each other on the STUFF page, where will I get my daily daily dose of rage? 131.247.9.91

Well, there are upcoming measures which will hopefully solve the STUFF problem. Under the new system created by It's dot com there will be no more "clever" votes or personal comments, just a list of arguments for and against the fact and a list of signatures for votes. Don't worry, I'm sure there's plenty of places on the Internet you can go for a daily dose of rage -- try visiting an extremely partisan political blog ;) Aurora the Homestar Coder 16:53, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

So you watch Full Metal Alchemist

So you watch Full Metal Alchemist huh? I watch that too. If you're interested,
I have the Full Metal Alchemist home page. (It's not
[Adult Swim]!) Also, Combolations Elizagerth, for achieving that Kick The Cheat toy!

With many Combolations, Lord Balmung of the Azure Sky 8:28 PM June 13 2005

Hehehe, thanks. Are you talking about the Funimation page, or fullmetal-alchemist.com (not official, but great anyway)? They're both good, but the latter especially, and I got a sweet Roy background from there. And thanks for the combolations, and for reminding me that I should change my thought of the day. Aurora the Homestar Coder 01:31, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
No, I'm talking about fullmetalalchemist.com. I've never heard of
fullmetal-alchemist.com. I'll have to look into it!

Oh BTW, fullmetalalchemist.com has a game (Full Metal Alchemist game
of course) called: The quest of the Sorceror's Stone (I think that's
the name of it!) You can use Ed Elric or Alphonse Elric.

And last but not least, what do mean "Thought of the day"?

The White Knight of Fianna

Thought of the day is what I have on my user page (although I guess I renamed it to "Thought of the times". And I saw the game, it's cute. Aurora the Homestar Coder 03:03, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Aurora, 66.169.177.177 has been spamming quite a lot! You agree?

There's even a tornado over in Montgomery, Illinios!

Sorry 'bout that. Power went out.

Anyways...

What did 65.169.177.177 mean when he/she said: "YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US"? The White Knight of Fianna 03:40, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It was an internet craze based on an old Genesis game called "Zero Wing." The craze died about four years ago, but some people can't get over its death. --Jay (Gobble) 04:53, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

1. I'm a girl (or maybe a wagon...filled up with pancakes) 2. Bwahahahaha, you made a text box so big it covers up the "edit" button! I assume that's the problem, right? Aurora the Homestar Coder 15:23, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

All fixed. Aurora the Homestar Coder 15:25, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

uhh, no, my page does have a point, its that its too easy to do that, at least use photoshop or something--Battlefrank 17:16, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I use Paintshop, and I fixed your user page and talk page so you can edit it again. Isn't that what you were asking for? Aurora the Homestar Coder 17:18, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

wow, you work "hard"-battlefrank

character evolution

that took an hour! why did you delete it- battlefrank

The pictures were huge and made the page look cluttery. There's no need for those pictures, they exist on the respective character evolution pages. Also, that page will likely be deleted soon in favor of Category:Character Evolution. Sorry about your work. Aurora the Homestar Coder 15:40, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
previews.-battlefrank
Do you mean that the pictures you put up were previews of the individual Character Evolution pages? It's a nice idea, but you'd probably want to make the pictures uniform sizes and put it in some sort of table. However, since Character Evolution will probably be deleted in favor of the corresponding Category (see above), it's a bit of a moot point. Aurora the Homestar Coder 16:20, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"Science again! I said science again!" I'm sad to see that one go. Also, the one at the very bottom, where I got my name. — It's dot com 18:00, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I restored "Science again!" because it's one of my favorites. "Science and technology! Turning things and adjusting them!" --MST3K Aurora the Homestar Coder 18:04, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
If you're wondering how they eat and breathe (and other science facts), just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show; I really should relax." Sooo... when are you going to test STUFF a fake fact? I need to know how easy it is for someone to follow the directions from start to finish. I think it's quite simple, but then again I made up the format. — It's dot com
I'll go do that, but I don't think that the girl who loves arcane programming languages is the best person to test the simplicity of your STUFF system. Aurora the Homestar Coder 19:17, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
So I stuffed some facts for "test crazy cartoon", and I have to say that while the results are very pretty and organized, it's also a very complicated process and I'm worried that it will confuse people who aren't very familiar with Wiki workings. Aurora the Homestar Coder 19:34, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I do agree that it's complicated—at least, more complicated than before. When I first thought up the design, I knew it would be. So it became my task to make the process as streamlined as possible. First of all, voting on a particular fact is just as easy as it's always been, maybe easier now that people don't have to strain themselves to come up with something unfunny. Making it easy to vote was important to me: you click "edit" next to the fact, you put in #~~~, you click save—no muss, no fuss (and the instructions on how to vote are front and center).
As far as adding a new STUFF item goes, I guess there's a tradeoff between simplicity and attractiveness. I'd say it's worth it, considering how fed up so many users are with the current STUFF page. But I truly believe it won't seem as complicated once we get the hang of it. All you really have to remember are three templates: {{checkstuffpage}}, {{stuffnew|...}}, and {{stuffmore|...}}. Everything else is just cutting and pasting. At the very least, if somebody truly can't get it to work, all he or she needs to do it try their best, and someone will be along shortly to clean it up (like on the WikiTroll page). — It's dot com 20:35, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, it does look good, and adding votes/arguments is quite simple. The instructions are pretty clear too, but then, I'm surprised when people can't understand things like uploading pictures. So we'll have to see, I guess. Aurora the Homestar Coder 20:38, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm betting that overall reaction will be positive, although I'm bracing myself for a slew of "what the crap is this?" comments from newbies. Worst-case scenario: the wiki melts down, and we dump this and try something else. Scenario I'm hoping for: after an initial learning curve, the wiki becomes a little better than when I found it. — It's dot com 20:59, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
