Talk:Onomatopoeia
From Homestar Runner Wiki
What about "ptoo"? And isn't there some sort of "dwoo!" noise that H*R sometimes makes when running away? I have vague memories of these, but can't remember off-hand where either of them appeared. - Ugliness Man 07:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- Well, "ptoo" was in couch patch, but it wasn't an onomatopoeic word, since he was spitting at the time. -- Super Martyo boing! 02:03, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
- I know he was actually spitting, but it also sounded like he said the word "ptoo", as opposed to simply making a "ptoo"-like sound effect. Most people don't actually say "ptoo" when spitting, unless they're trying to be funny, (and usually when they do, it's a very percussive and/or plosive sound, whereas H*R's "ptoo" was more vocal and/or melodic). It's like how some people just sneeze normally, but when some people sneeze it sounds like they're actually saying "a-choo", or like if a cat actually said "meow" in a cartoon intead of just making an actual cat-like "meow" sound. - Ugliness Man 18:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
O RLY?
The explanation text on a recent edit said "An onomatopoeia has to be spelled out somewhere". Are you sure about that? If I'm telling a story, and I use a phrase like "and he fell to the ground with a great thud", or "I accidentally dropped the melon off the roof, and it kinda splatted when it hit the pavement", the words 'thud' and 'splat' are onomatopoeia, because I'm saying the word "thud" or "splat" rather than imitating the sound. In Happy Hallow-day (which was linked improperly anyway), it's pretty clear that Coach Z is doing a bad job of imitating sounds, so this particular edit was kosher, but the reasoning is shaky. I'm not saying we should go through every toon and sbemail and look for instances of spoken onomatopoeia, but for future reference, if a conspicious and noteworthy instance of such comes up, it might be worthwhile dicussing whether or not it sould be mentioned in this article, rather than being dismissed simply because it's spoken rather than "spelled out somewhere". - Ugliness Man 20:34, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
Guitar Sounds
if we have the broodle broodles, should we also have the meedleymees, etc? -DAGRON 02:01, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Order
I noticed there isn't any sort of order for this list. It's basically just a random compilation. I'm pretty sure this is generally a problem. Before we take action, should they be in any order, and if so, what order should they be in? The Knights Who Say Ni 20:07, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- We usually do in order of toon released... and i think they are already. That said, given the different format of this page and the likelyhood of having the same one appear in multiple toons, i wouldn't complain if it was alphabetized instead. — Defender1031*Talk 22:03, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
