Talk:Van Buren

- Historical note: Before becoming president, New York-born Martin Van Buren was vice president under Andrew Jackson and was elected president just before Jackson left office, riding on Jackson's popularity. Four years and one economic crash later, he lost in 1841 to William Henry Harrison (who died after thirty days in office). He ran for president again in 1848 as a candidate for the anti-slavery Free Soil Party, which later evolved into the Republican Party.
Also, note that the Republican Party which evolved from the Free Soil Party (among other parents) aligned its platform ideals most closely with what is today the Democratic Party. (It's long and complicated. Just think of him as a modern-day Republican with a focus on states' rights.)
Could the Martin Van Buren references be influenced not by seinfeld but by pete and pete (the episode where the younger pete fakes sick and gets Martin Van Buren stuck up his nose), a show that's been reference before by H*R?
[edit] Not really...Is it?
I really don't think it's Van Buren's head on the coins in 3 Times Halloween Funjob. It looks more like Washington or just some generic guy in a wig. Regardless, I think the coins just aren't big enough to merit this as a fact, so I digga, digga-digga, diggity diggty DELETED!...it.
How bout the fact that it might be a reference to the infamous Pete and Pete episode, "Sick Day"?
[edit] Seinfeld
Do we have any support for the Seinfeld reference beyond the circumstantial? I haven't seen the show in question, but the Van Buren humor seems like acceptable TBC randomness to me. One could just as easily attribute it to their love of "old-timey" humor, or their connection to They Might Be Giants, who are also known for historical and/or presidential references. I propose the fact be removed or diminished. -- Mayosolo 19:40, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- They've mentioned Seinfeld elsewhere, including in an interview. I think it's legit. --DorianGray
