Hi, McArby's. I had to delete your welcome message for Papanoel because it was inconsistent with our standards for welcoming. First, all welcomes need to be personal. That means it says something about the user personally, and not just something you could copy and paste to just any user. (I notice you were given an impersonal welcome yourself when you arrived; that may be part of what set you on the wrong track. Sorry about that; that shouldn't have happened.) Secondly, the message was unprofessional. It contained many spelling errors (incidentally, the German for "welcome" is spelt "Willkommen") and contained phrases that didn't make a lot of sense together about sandboxes, Easter eggs and the like. Also, while I've no doubt you meant it to be funny, your joke about "killing you dead" was not appropriate for a welcome. All these things tend to be confusing and off-putting for new users, and as such they undermine our attempts to actually welcome them to our community. Note taken, but I was trying to show my smart-alek nature. I will be more careful in what I say, and I will work on my spelling (I was going by how it sounded :p). Hey there, McArbys. Your welcome of User:TheCreator was still not really what we're after. For one, there's no real need to talk about your previous welcomes... it's not particularly welcoming to talk about yourself the whole time.

Secondly, you shouldn't be telling people what to do (for example, making controversial edits without checking the talk page, as you mentioned in that welcome) if they haven't asked for help, and there's no indication that they'll actually be doing something wrong. The purpose of a welcome message is to make the new user feel welcome here, not to try to get them to toe the line... there's already a bunch of links to our policy pages on every new user's talk page, so they can get up to speed on how we run here. Pre-emptively warning people not to do things will only serve to put them off.

Finally, the "random" joke at the end would only confuse a new user... if you do insist on tacking a joke onto the end, it needs to at the very least make sense, and should be something that the new user will get... so H*R references are fine, but Futurama references, for example, probably aren't that good, unless you know the new user has watched that show.

I'd like to reiterate Heimi's link about welcoming with tact and professionalism – look through that, and try to understand how we welcome users here. Thanks, --phlip ^T_C 12:40, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Understood, I am not to good with pact and trofessionalism, but I can try to make it like that. I can't guarantee that my welcomes will be good, rewarding, or even any fun, really. but I will work my best to get my welcomes to fit the silver Gold standard. which means I will also start to sign my posts right away :P The McArby! 14:15, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
