Typically used by astronomers (and the loose base for Star Trek's "stardate" calendar), when mapped to the Gregorian calendar, it's the raw number of days that have elapsed since Monday, January 1, 4713 BC. There's also some decimal thingy involved that I don't fully understand that also gives the time of day. Julian Day.
