"Strong Bad, read a book" may be a reference to the comic book and television hero, The Tick. In the animated series episode The Tick vs. Arthur's Bank Account, one of the bad guys, a disgruntled hand puppet named Handy, would make obscure literary references, then get frustrated and yell "READ A BOOK!" when people didn't recognize them.
