Welcome to the '''Homestar Runner Wiki!''' I wanted to extend a personal welcome, since I believe strongly that a [[Wikipedia:Wiki|Wiki]] should be a democratic and non-threatening place where everyone feels like they can contribute. Unfortunately it can be very frustrating at first if you make changes that are ignored or changed back by other users, but if so I encourage you to hang in there; as you get a feel for the way things are done around here you'll feel more at home. That was my experience, anyway!
+

If you need any help, feel free to ask anyone on the [[HRWiki:Welcoming committee#Members|welcoming committee]] (like [[User_talk:AbdiViklas|me]]!). You can also post questions on the [[HRWiki talk:FAQ|FAQ talk page]].

Here are some tips to get you started:
+
Oh and hi Seriously thanks for the tip on my [[User Talk:Darthclone Runner|talk page]]. So here's some links I might add soon!
-
* If you need general information, editing tips, or answers to frequently asked questions, check out the [[Help:Contents|help]] page.
+
-
* Before you do any significant editing, be sure to familiarize yourself with our [[HRWiki:Standards|wiki standards]].
+
-
* Read up on the rules and guidelines for your [[hRWiki:User space|user page]]. What you're reading right now, by the way, is the "Talk:" page that goes with your user page. It's a good way to communicate directly with specific users. The best way to respond, though, is on the same user page where the conversation was started. E.g. if you have a question, go to my [[User_talk:AbdiViklas|user talk page]] and edit it, then watch my page (via [[Special:Recentchanges|Recent changes]]) for a response.
+
-
* If you're not sure what you can do to help out, head over to [[HRWiki:The Stick|The Stick]].
+
-
* If you're looking for more community interaction, you can also register over at our [http://forum.hrwiki.org forum] and get More Community Interaction Than You Or Your Grandmother Can Handle!
+
-
* Above all, '''be bold''' and have fun!
+
-
Feel free to delete this message when you're done reading it. (In general, it's frowned on to delete other people's input on talk pages, but this entry is just here to be helpful. When it's done being helpful, I guarantee you won't hurt my feelings by ditching it!)

Hey Seriously, just thought I'd drop you a quick line to give you some help on signing. :) To sign your name in a STUFF vote, a Talk page or a Guestbook, type three tildes as follows: <nowiki>~~~</nowiki> - this signs your name and creates a link to your User page.
+
You can claim full ownership. I kind of do have a problem getting back to you, I admit. I've just been so busy with school (I don't get home until five o'clock), homework (two subjects every night except Fridays), and my personal life (friends, family, and my cat) that I haven't really spent all that much time on the Wiki of late.--{{User:Homsarroks/sig}} 12:11, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

:Yeah, sometimes great wiki users just need to take a break, as they may have issues outside of this wedsite [sic]. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 12:28, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

You can also type four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) to sign your name and leave the current date - this is appropriate for Talk pages and Guestbooks, but not for STUFF.

:Hi again Seriously. Just to tell you, that template you were trying to put on [[Jerome]] is <nowiki>{{tobedeleted}}</nowiki>. However, unless you have a good reason to delete it, I think it's ok the way it is. {{User:Bubsty/sig}} 23:26, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
+
:Heh, you're right. Glad to see you again. :) But yeah, my teacher has been constantly drilling me with stuff. Sixth grade is probably the hardest homework-wise, I think. Example: Yesterday, I had homework in ''every single subject''. I have eight subjects. It's pretty brutal. :P — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 20:29, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
-
::Hey Seriously, [[Your Hair is Messed Up]] is an actual feature; it's just from the Everything Else DVD, which a lot of people don't have yet. That's probably why it hasn't been transcribed yet. We can't delete a legit feature like that, so I'm going to remove the template. Keep on tranglin'. {{User:Heimstern Läufer/sig}} 23:50, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
+
::LOL—no, my son, it just gets worse! (Although, seriously, the kicker from what I've seen is that sixth grade is such a shock to the system if it means going from elementary to middle school. So much changes about the way students interact with teachers and the level of academic and life-management skills that are expected of them. And yes, actually, eight subjects' worth of homework in one night ''does'' sound like a lot by any standard.) —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 01:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

The top one is your current sig, complete with link to a pointless redirect page. The bottom one is your sig, actually linking to your talk page directly. Other than the underline on the link, they look ''exactly the same'', and that's only because I have "Always underline links" turned on in my [[Special:Preferences|prefs]]. You claim it "It looks better that way!" but in fact it looks no different. The redirect page is completely pointless. {{User:Phlip/sig}} 13:34, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:While I understand what you're saying, there's one thing that ''does'' make it look better. I just don't like seeing an empty link to my talk page when I'm viewing messages here. Thus, the redirect makes it a good link. But I'm not gonna contest this anymore, so you might as well delort it. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 13:38, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

:If you're bored you can always work on your userpage. You can also look around on other User's pages, and find Guestbooks, Quizzes, easter eggs, and other fun things. You can browse the [[Secret Pages]], you never know what you'll find there. Then there's opening a [[Special:Random|random]] wiki page, and fixing it up. You can patroll the [[Special:Recent Changes|recent changes]], and revert vandals, welcome new users, and help people who post questions on talk pages. Then there's the [[HRWiki:IRC channel|chat channel]], the [http://forum.hrwiki.org/ forum], other user's talk pages, and of course, the [http://www.homestarrunner.com/ official site]. :I don't quite understand your question about vandals. You mean what do you do if somebody changes a page for the worst? Well you can always edit it yourself after, to fix what they did. If it's just badly worded or something, just editing it is fine. If they add something obviously wrong, but innocent, then you can [[HRWiki:WikiTroll#How to revert a page|revert it]], and if it's obviously blatantly vandalism, add it to [[HRWiki:WikiTroll#Offenders|the list of offenders]] or let a sysop know. I am confused. Is it sysops and admins here that are sysops and admins at the fanstuff. Or is it only admins here that are admins also on the fanstuff?--[[User:H*bad|H*bad]] 16:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:For some idiotic reason, all admins here are admins at the Fansuff wiki. However, no admins at the fanstuff wiki (besides Hrwiki admins) are admins here. — {{User: Seriously/sig}}
+
::No, if you look closely, you'll see that the knowledge-base sysops just have [[HRFWiki:Special:Listusers/reservist|reserve permissions]] at the fanstuff. That means that they can help out in an emergency, but don't have any responsibilities other than that. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 04:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:::Well, I understand that. However, I find it idiotic because admins from there aren't admins here. There's no reason why those sysops aren't as good as you guys. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 19:07, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
::::Because there's no need. We have enough KB sysops to completely cover the workload without a need for emergency reserves. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 19:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:::::But then why not let the Fanstuff wiki have their own sysop nominations? I think there wouldn't be a need for reservists, then, and the Fanstuff wiki qwould be able to choose. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 19:14, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
::::::What, you mean [[HRFWiki:HRFWiki:Sysop Nominations|like this]]? — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 19:23, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:::::::Yeah. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 19:24, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
::::::::Then I don't see what you're griping about. As a rule, we stay out of the internal affairs of both the fanstuff and the forum, only stepping in in extreme circumstances. We let the fanstuff sysops and the forum mods handle all the day-to-day business of those venues. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 19:27, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
:::::::::Okay, I understand what you're saying. I just mean that this (in my opinion, at least) isn't much of an extreme circumstance when the fanstuff wiki can have their own sysop nominations. — {{User: Seriously/sig}} 19:28, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
+
::::::::::Huh? An example of an extreme circumstance would be being overrun with a vandal attack. I can't think of anything short of that where the reservists should exercise their abilities. In general, that doesn't happen much, and so the current amount of fanstuff sysops is plenty. If you disagree, however, you should take it up with them, not here. — [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] 19:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I was a pretty obnoxious kid, huh? Although I guess most people are that obsessed with their own opinions at that age. Well, ish happens I guess. Either way, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank [[User:It's dot com|It's dot com]] as well as all the other responsible adults who gently led me through my childhood in such a retrospectively amusing way! You guys were all super nice yet appropriately reprimanding when I was being a total freak. If any of you were wondering (Will said, with a frighteningly small degree of facetiousness), I'm not so childish anymore.

im really interested to know why you keep ruining my talk page, ciberdude. and by the way, get some grammar lessons. [[User:Seriously|Seriously]] 15:48, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Speaking of childhood, here's a funny thing I noticed: I've changed an incredible degree since age 12, and yet none of you seem to have changed at all. I looked at the recent changes part and It's Dot Com was one of the first ones I noticed. Perhaps most of that observation can be credited to how much people inevitably change during adolescence; nevertheless, it's sort of disturbing and comforting in equal parts to find this place exactly the same as I left it.
-
:grammar is for nerds.
+
And I'll say this: it speaks plenty about genuine commitment that you guys are all still here, fixing that, adding on to this, and slowly and patiently leading all the little angry children that patrol this website. I find it admirable, if not the direction I would pursue in your situation. In any case, thanks for helping me out so much as a kid (if you guys even remember me).

P.S. That less parenthetical statement makes me think... what are all of our most recognizable online attributes? Are any of them truly distinctive enough to be remembered? Sort of an interesting thing to think about. If any of you remember me, I would like to be remembered for my enthusiastic use of emoticons and tendency to insert my voice into conversations I had less to do with than the Iran-Contra Affair.

-
:Seriously, I didn't warn you about editing other people's user talk pages just for kicks. It can indeed be considered trolling. Other actions that can be considered trolling include telling someone to get grammar lessons and telling them that they are "going down." :Hey, learning's what a wiki's about! (You didn't think by "knowledge base" it meant only what's coded in the pages, did you?) Thanks for doing it gracefully. And you know, if you're really interested in improving the wiki, an apology to Ciberdude would probably be a nice move; he seemed pretty ticked. (Yes, disproportionately and problematically so, but it's good to make the first move.) Again, the wiki isn't just binary code on a server; it's interpersonal relationships too, and patching them up is a direct way of contributing to the upkeep of the wiki. —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 18:21, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

:Hm. I'm sad to see that you think signing a guestbook makes everything okay; given the two edits that followed that, everything is ''not'' okay between the two of you. And what I said above ''does'' have a meaning, actually; let me see if I can say it with fewer big words: users getting along is not just a nice thing; it actually matters to the wiki. The wiki's a community, and when you damage the community you damage the wiki—in other words, true trolling (worse, really, than vandalism). On the other hand, when you make the community better you improve the wiki (i.e. gnoming of the best kind). Bottom line: It would be great if you and Ciberdude get around to just co-existing peacefully while nursing grudges and just don't speak to each other. It would be a '''lot''' better, though, if one of you swallowed your pride, forgave the other's pettiness (by now this applies to both of you), and made the first move for peace (instead of keeping on insulting each other in little ways). And yes, I mean apologizing even though by now both of you could apologize to the other for exactly the same thing.
+
-
:Of course all this is a suggestion; I can't force you to do anything. (Unless the resentment that you guys are keeping on low flares up and somebody gets banned.) But I mean it when I say the relationships between users are part of the wiki, and if you leave one damaged you're missing an opportunity to improve the wiki. If that sounds meaningless, try reading it a few more times until you find a meaning. —[[User:AbdiViklas|AbdiViklas]] 18:52, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey there, Seriously. Just dropping by to tell you something. I see you added a quote to the "Pretty Awesome Quotes" section on [[User:Has Matt?|my userpage]]. :Then you can probably do two things:

::1. Wait, and hope that one comes on soon.

By the way, I noticed your edit [http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php?title=Talk:Timeline&diff=233990&oldid=233909 here]. Notice how it's got a gray box around it, and extends off the right edge of the page instead of having a line break? Both of those happen because your line started with a blank space (or more than one). It can be kind of annoying in longer comments because they just go "to the right and straight on til morning." If the spaces were because you were trying to indent your comment as you see folks doing in replies, use ":"s instead. Check it out:

Somebody else might very well (maybe you could arange some kind of trade; you see stuff like that often, with users with drawing skills making pics for others in exchange for fanfics and so on), or better yet, take a shot at doing it yourself; I'll bet you'll find it easier than it looks. Even so, you should respect him. If he has just counterpointed your opinion and said his argument like he did, that gives you no reason to be like that. He also might just be mad at you because of your ridiculously profane comments that are barely censored. He can block you, and I might not be the one to say this, but I suggest you realize the trouble you could be in if you gave him another reason to be mad at you. Stop talking to troublemakers. It just puts more gas on the fire. Don't call them stupid. Don't tell them we're going to get them. ::Yes, Seriously, it ''is'' frustrating. But it doesn't do any good to threaten or insult vandals and trolls (this applies to ''any'' troll or vandal, not just Yeltensic). Sometimes, that's just what they're looking for, and at any rate, it won't stop them. Since we aren't sysops, the best thing we can do is revert and, if necessary (i.e., if the sysops don't already know), report on WikiTroll. Note that since Yeltensic isn't actually committing vandalism on the pages, we really should just leave this one up to the sysops. {{User:Heimstern Läufer/sig}} 01:56, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

In the end, yelt, I'm just disappointed. You seemed like a pretty good user at first. Then, you became obsessed with the guestbooks and started putting offensive messages that were barely censored. Then, you went even further and made a page called save the guestbooks. Again. Again. And again. Finally you got blocked. I thought that would be the end, but no. Even when you go blocked, you just wouldn't give up. You've created more than 5 usernames, you know. That's bad. real bad. You are just ruining your reputation further. Soon, you will never have a chance to even ''salvage'' the broken pieces of your reputation, because you will be blocked indefinitely. Just give up, do your time, and come back on the wiki with a clean slate when you are unblocked. It's not too late. {{User:Seriously/sig}} 01:18, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What does inspire these weird trolls?

I wonder who Clan rHrN is, and why someone would hate him. The thing these trolls do sometimes.... >.> — Seriously (Talk) 02:00, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, I know who Clan is, and also why someone would dislike him... I don't condone such actions, however. --DorianGray
He's a guy on the Fanstuff Wiki. Here's his userpage. However, that's all I know about him. Has Matt? (talk) 02:16, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
He also likes to hang around the forum a lot, so you might want to check there. I won't say anything else, because I don't like to speak ill of others. --DorianGray
After some digging around, I found his user profile on the forum. Has Matt? (talk) 02:27, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
What I wonder, though, is why someone decided to spam so violently for him. I mean, what did Clan do? — Seriously (Talk) 02:45, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

You can claim full ownership. I kind of do have a problem getting back to you, I admit. I've just been so busy with school (I don't get home until five o'clock), homework (two subjects every night except Fridays), and my personal life (friends, family, and my cat) that I haven't really spent all that much time on the Wiki of late.--Image:Homsar-in-motion.gifhr.pngΨHomsarΨroksΨImage:kookysig.gifImage:Cheat-shrug-tiny.gif 12:11, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About your Wikistress caption

That's the truest thing i've heard in a while.

Anyone else agrees?

Nikolce Kocovski 06:39, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Heh, you're right. Glad to see you again. :) But yeah, my teacher has been constantly drilling me with stuff. Sixth grade is probably the hardest homework-wise, I think. Example: Yesterday, I had homework in every single subject. I have eight subjects. It's pretty brutal. :P — Seriously (Talk) 20:29, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
LOL—no, my son, it just gets worse! (Although, seriously, the kicker from what I've seen is that sixth grade is such a shock to the system if it means going from elementary to middle school. So much changes about the way students interact with teachers and the level of academic and life-management skills that are expected of them. And yes, actually, eight subjects' worth of homework in one night does sound like a lot by any standard.) —AbdiViklas 01:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Just wait. I got 2 words. STANDARDIZED TESTS. DBK! 01:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

your kidding me, in my year 6, all we got was one sheet of homework, both english and maths.

[edit] User talk:Seriously/_Redirect

Seriously (Talk)
Seriously (Talk)
The top one is your current sig, complete with link to a pointless redirect page. The bottom one is your sig, actually linking to your talk page directly. Other than the underline on the link, they look exactly the same, and that's only because I have "Always underline links" turned on in my prefs. You claim it "It looks better that way!" but in fact it looks no different. The redirect page is completely pointless. --phlip TC 13:34, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

While I understand what you're saying, there's one thing that does make it look better. I just don't like seeing an empty link to my talk page when I'm viewing messages here. Thus, the redirect makes it a good link. But I'm not gonna contest this anymore, so you might as well delort it. — Seriously (Talk) 13:38, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Signature

Hi there Seriously, I noticed you recently changed the color of your signature. However the color you have chosen is quite hard to read, and impossible to read on your own talk page. Please consult HRWiki:Signature, specifically the line stating "Your signature can be a different color or colors, provided they are readable", and find a more visible color. Thanks, Thunderbird 15:22, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sysops

I am confused. Is it sysops and admins here that are sysops and admins at the fanstuff. Or is it only admins here that are admins also on the fanstuff?--H*bad 16:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

For some idiotic reason, all admins here are admins at the Fansuff wiki. However, no admins at the fanstuff wiki (besides Hrwiki admins) are admins here. — Seriously (Talk)
No, if you look closely, you'll see that the knowledge-base sysops just have reserve permissions at the fanstuff. That means that they can help out in an emergency, but don't have any responsibilities other than that. — It's dot com 04:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, I understand that. However, I find it idiotic because admins from there aren't admins here. There's no reason why those sysops aren't as good as you guys. — Seriously (Talk) 19:07, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Because there's no need. We have enough KB sysops to completely cover the workload without a need for emergency reserves. — It's dot com 19:10, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
But then why not let the Fanstuff wiki have their own sysop nominations? I think there wouldn't be a need for reservists, then, and the Fanstuff wiki qwould be able to choose. — Seriously (Talk) 19:14, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
What, you mean like this? — It's dot com 19:23, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Yeah. — Seriously (Talk) 19:24, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Then I don't see what you're griping about. As a rule, we stay out of the internal affairs of both the fanstuff and the forum, only stepping in in extreme circumstances. We let the fanstuff sysops and the forum mods handle all the day-to-day business of those venues. — It's dot com 19:27, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Okay, I understand what you're saying. I just mean that this (in my opinion, at least) isn't much of an extreme circumstance when the fanstuff wiki can have their own sysop nominations. — Seriously (Talk) 19:28, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Huh? An example of an extreme circumstance would be being overrun with a vandal attack. I can't think of anything short of that where the reservists should exercise their abilities. In general, that doesn't happen much, and so the current amount of fanstuff sysops is plenty. If you disagree, however, you should take it up with them, not here. — It's dot com 19:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Maybe we should just leave it up to the sysops--H*bad 23:41, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oracle

Oracle is not a joke. It's a database. A wiki needs a database to hold all the information. We use MySQL, but there are many others, and the MediaWiki developers have been working to extend the software to be able to use the Oracle database. It's still in the experimental phase, which is why it was noted with an exclamation mark, indicating that it's not recommeded for important applications yet. The text on our project page is taken directly from the official release notes. — It's dot nofoolin' 22:48, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WOW!

I was a pretty obnoxious kid, huh? Although I guess most people are that obsessed with their own opinions at that age. Well, ish happens I guess. Either way, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank It's dot com as well as all the other responsible adults who gently led me through my childhood in such a retrospectively amusing way! You guys were all super nice yet appropriately reprimanding when I was being a total freak. If any of you were wondering (Will said, with a frighteningly small degree of facetiousness), I'm not so childish anymore.

--Will, or "Seriously"

P.S. That less parenthetical statement makes me think... what are all of our most recognizable online attributes? Are any of them truly distinctive enough to be remembered? Sort of an interesting thing to think about. If any of you remember me, I would like to be remembered for my enthusiastic use of emoticons and tendency to insert my voice into conversations I had less to do with than the Iran-Contra Affair.

and then, another decade later to the month, these words were read by the former Yeltensic/Granola, who is now a 31 year old lesbian anarcho-communist who suddenly thought of this site after listening to a lot of They Might Be Giants lately and now lives a little outside that band's city of residence after moving a cumulative 4000+ miles back and forth across the US (often writing run-on sentences along the way) since 2006, the year I went from embarrassingly obnoxious wiki-vandal to shamefully racist edgelord
